Feedback: Starting "Whose recipe are you mixing?"-Threads
submitted over 7 years ago by c5b4c91772c729fc7d0a

Hi community,

I had this idea a few days ago and after checking back with the mods, would love to hear your ideas before starting off the thread:

Whose recipe are you mixing?: A reoccurring thread where you post the recipes by others that you're mixing, how you like them and if you have any suggestions on how to improve them.

I imagine a comment could look like this:

> Airface White mystery by /u/Mathematical- - Just made a second batch of this and I'm experimenting with TPA Dragonfruit & FLV Mango and adding some FW Hard Candy to it. Surprised how well the cucumber works in there!
> Peach Pit Tobacco by /u/dodgerfog33 - Worked really well on a DTL device, but became really harsh on my MTL 6mg setup. Too bad because I really liked the profile!
> Fantastic by dazcole - Spent my last drops of CAP Sweet Tangerine on the third batch, a really refreshing orange soda! Replace the oranges with FA White Peach and FA Peach at 2% and you get a refreshing peach soda.

I imagine a thread like this would encourage people who aren't yet creating their own novel recipes to contribute with their own little twists to a recipe and of course it would give you a chance to appreciate those mixers whose recipe you found on page 3 of the Monthly threads that turned out to be a real kicker.

What do you say, community?

I just mixed Mango Yo La Tango by /u/Enyawreklaw, because he wanted me to, because we have very different ways of perceiving the main ingredient, CAP Sweet Mango. He loves it and I think it's pretty gross, like overripe nearly rotten fruit gross, but still very useful in small amounts. I think it'll be interesting to see what I think of this recipe. I can imagine it being a whole lot less disgusting than 6% CAP Sweet Mango standalone, and maybe even enjoyable. We'll see. It'll get at least a three-day steep first.

It seems odd to ask "what are you mixing" because I just mixed it and haven't tried it yet, so there's only so much I can say about it.

Maybe "what are you vaping" is a better question for a weekly feature?

Good point - "What are you vaping" is definitely catchier 👍. Could lead to the post expanding to people posting their own work-in-progress recipes, but that might actually be a good thing.

Are you me? Also I mix your top tier mango recipe like once a month for the last year and somehow still haven’t run out on the small bottles. It’s a sipper for sure.

It's getting warmer where I live, so i'm gearing up to make some refreshing summery juices. I've tried a couple that I think will be getting me through the (hopefully) sweltering heat.

I bought the concentrates for this on a whim, as I was looking for something fruity and refreshing, and I'm glad I did. All of these concentrates were new to me aside from CAP Lemon Lime, and I haven't SFT'd them yet, but this combination really works for me. The blend here really comes together and produces something larger than it's constituent parts; a juicy berry, bursting with flavour. The CAP Lemon Lime adds a sharp edge reminiscent of the tang of a good sorbet. Best after 3 days, even better after 5 IMO.

I added about .3% of FA Polar Blast on day 3 to add some cooling. At first it added a muskiness to the mix and I thought I had ruined it, but when I tried it again on day 5 the fruits had come back to life, the muskiness was gone and it was delicious.

All in all, I'd definitely recommend this. It's a gorgeous mix on a hot day, especially with a hint of cooling. I'll probably try this with the VT Sorbet Base as recommended at some point.

Best Damn Pink Lemonade by /u/vurve -

Most of you probably know and love this, so there's not much I can add in terms of analysis, but I'll give a few impressions and throw some more superlatives on the pile.

This is a god damn perfect hot weather vape. The acidity/fruit/sweet balance is brilliant. It's refreshing, tangy, exciting, addictive. All that good shit. I also added some Polar Blast to this, as I'm new to the cooling agent thing and I've heard it's good here. Definitely a good addition, would recommend.

The only thing about this mix is that it seems to fade fast, so I would make it as needed and vape it fast. Not a criticism of the mix, of course, as I don't think that can be helped.

PB&Jam cookie by /u/notcharlesmanson -

I mixed this up as I have a bottle of TPA Peanut Butter that I bought a year ago as a random add on bottle to an order, and never got round to using it.

I was pleasantly surprised by this, as I didn't expect peanut to translate well into the world of vaping. Well, I was wrong. This is very addictive stuff. It has that dry/earthy peanut mixed with a juicy strawberry, brought together by the butter/biscuit base. Definitely recommend giving this one a mix.

I should say that I made a few subs with this one, as I didn't have all of the flavours. I subbed the AP for the same amount of FA Almond, as I thought that would be a reasonable approximation. I didn't have either of the strawberries so I used TPA Strawberry sweet and Strawberry ripe in place of the INW and FLV versions.

Hope this is in keeping with what this thread should be. I haven't really done this before.

If anyone has any suggestions for summer vapes, hit me with them!

Getting to work right away, nice! I get that you'd appreciate such a thread then ;-)

I remember mixing a couple of batches of Best Damn Pink Lemonade last Summer. Was great, but I also noticed a particular reaction to LA Lemonade, can't really describe it, maybe a waxy residue in the mouth? Got the same with Backwoods Lemonade and The Best Damn MadLad Lemonade, so finding a sub for LA Lemonade is on my list for future lemonades.

Yep, this is the kind of thread i'd really appreciate seeing regularly. The discussion on here can be quite meta sometimes, and I haven't tried most of the flavours people are talking about yet, so a simple "I'm vaping this, this is why and it tastes like this" is valuable to me.

I also feel like it would be good for discussion of tweaks/variations on recipes you're currently vaping.

Hope this takes off. :)

Curious about the pbj. What % did you use the strawberries

1 points

by lNTERLINKEDover 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

I used sweet at .75 and ripe at 1.5

If you have to use the same subs as me, I'd suggest using them higher (maybe 1 and 2%), but as notcharles mentioned, you should try his recipe, as it seems the strawberries he uses are pretty unique.

If you go with my subs and the strawberry still isn't popping at higher percentages, try adding .25 or .5 of dragonfruit if you have it. It can really help bring out the fruitiness of strawberry flavours.

Hey thanks! Don't have his strawberries but I've got yours and I'm gonna mix it up tonight. Haven't tried th peanut butter yet so it's about time I crack it open. Thanks again for your suggestion.

I'd totally participate as I'm still at the stage of mixing the top elr and Atf recipes, buying only additional flavours to hit the largest mixable surface. Theoretically this is the best value way to start and what most people do to some degree. Nearly exhausted this and will go full new recipes soon.

With pallets being different, some top recipes seem to be lacklustre, leaving conceivable room for improvement, as the inspiration for this thread shows.

My example would be diyordie Atf strawberry jam on toast: love the flavour but not enough toast. I've tried. 5% AP that ended up one the wholemeal side, or 0.25% AP and 0.25% fruit circles for a longer steep but a more fruity wholemeal.

6 points

by lNTERLINKEDover 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

This is the best approach to building a base of flavours you'll enjoy, I think. Find a recipe with a profile you like the look of, and throw a few other flavours on the order that you think might work well with the others you have.

4 points

by xx2000xxover 7 years ago

Trust me, dump ELR right now because of how the "top" scores are tabulated. 20% of them are totally redundant and a waste of money because we are going back to the Vivi Nova/Protank and hell even the carto days with 20% plus flavorings and 50/50 was standard for years until people wanted to be sick as tits and chuck cloudz for days.

ATF is fantastic obviously, however I'm finding it also a bit repetitive because you have to be a member ($2 a month) to post your recipes so it's from the same mixers who have their own style. That said sign up because to be able to save and create batches is totally worth it, although the site has some work to be done soon and it's a shame the owner (forget his name now) doesn't have help or wants help.

I've taken a break from ATF and hitting this site. Skip the big clone threads and hit every post your recipe for the month along with the flavor of the week. That's the best way to branch out.

2 points

by nuuvem_tokenover 7 years ago

I gotta laugh as I was nodding my head “uh huh” to you getting all the most used and versatile flavors then suddenly it was “atf jam on toast” lol. I have never even heard of some of those flavors outside that recipe.

And I think Flawless Aftermath is a mistake. However you can learn a lot from it and tweak it and most of those flavors are useful.

by mjswooperover 7 years ago

Hah yeah, I jumped on that hype train as everyone was crazy for it in that remix/clone month. I was pleasantly suprised so much I want to improve it. I try to steer clear of the diacetyl and such as much as possible, which makes the whole 'maximum surface area' business pretty tricky. Yep, I've tried most DX and v2 flavours :<

Hi all. I've been mixing my own since.. I started vaping. I live in the Philippines, back then vaping wasn't here yet, so I made my own, pretty terrible at first because I didn't know what I was doing and limited to what I could get, I only had caramel tfa and menthol.mixing with syringes, I did have good nic,vg, pg. Now, thanks to chief flavors, I have more flavors then I need. When the first griffin came out, that opened up the flavor potential. Prior to that the lemo drop was as good as it got, and that's not too good. before that it was C5 cartos. when I first got Capella vanilla custard, oh man, taste buds loved it. then a few years later I went through fruits and menthol. I tend to stick to one mix for a long time. Now my adv. is 5% ry4d,1.5fa caramel fa, 2.5 butterscotch ripple. 1 or 2 % of fw, bav cream and sweet cream and 4% caps. vanilla custard. nothing fancy but works for me. I use a clone kfun mini, my favorite so far, clapton coil 5 wraps 3mm. I'm sure there is better but that's working ok. I don't like dripping. I went through all this crap because I was hacking so bad for a few years, day and night from cigarettes, got scary. My smokers hack is completely gone now.And now that vaping is here and juices are available, I've tried a few and they are all way to sweet for me, I like my own. there you go

I really hope this idea takes off - I think it's awesome. Since I'm really short on time right now I'm just going to paste some notes directly from my recipe calculator:

Manuka by xGRANITEx (SUBLime Bar)

2018/04/13 - As per the recipe but I cut Cactus from 0.5 to 0.25. Glad I had the 10% FA Honey dilution ready for this one. Recipe calls for 0.1% FA Honey.

2018/05/06 - Vaped this in the Merlin around day 22 and it was really great! Nice and light fruity vape. Glad I cut the cactus tho because the other flavors are quite delicate. Honey is the predominate flavor here with kiwi in the back. Slight floral aspect due to the Fuji, Pear, and Cactus. Not nearly as floral as the Placid v7 clone though. This one will probably be best chain vaped in a big dripper because it is pretty light and without much body. Perfect summertime flavor. Try WS-23 in this! Going to make a 50ml next to see how it vapes in the Gorge or Nudge 22.

I have mixed a new batch yesterday too. Originally I also wanted to cut back on cactus, but I like it on .5 now.

Personally, I really like this idea. It really lets you know that popular recipe makers aren't just popular because they're posting everywhere, but because they have the quality to back it up.

Just yesterday I made a 60ml batch of /u/fizzmustard's Mustard Tiger, and it is fantastic. My favorite juice for the longest time was Tiger's Blood, and this really scratches that itch. I'm considering adding a tiny bit of TPA Coconut to my next batch because I adore coconut vapes, but first I wanna see how the flavors change over the next week or so.

The better thing to do would to encourage leaving reviews on the recipes themselves. Unless the person is a redditor or on ATF, they probably won't know their recipes are adapted or be able to take the compliment. (just based on the usual audience)

The biggest suck thing that's been preached on about trying juice is leave reviews where you found it.

7 points

by Apexifiedover 7 years agoSuckling from the teats of Daenerys Targaryen

This actually seems like a good gateway to reviewing. It could get people talking about recipes they've tried more casually and before they know it, there's the review.

Leaving a review where you found it is definitely encouraged. But discussing it anywhere you feel comfortable shouldn't be discouraged.

1 points

by DarkJester89over 7 years agoThe Clone-y Professor

True that, def wished archived recipes could be commented on.

*walks into an old room LOTR style, rings the old bell hanging on the wall, in elvish, two words illuminate in the moonlight, the lone traveler ponders for days of the 2 words... Boba's Bounty"

lmao, I don't think ATF (mostly of what I have seen) is a good fit, i'm not on facebook so I don't think I can log in there, but I've seen my own recipes posted there under "I made this, i'm the original" haha it has since been taken down but eh

To log in on ATF you need only an email acct....😉

3 points

by bigtidderover 7 years ago

Yup. It would really help though if Recipe posts here were never archived and always brought back up to the top when a new comment is added.

Most recipes won't get any feedback posts for 2-6 weeks while people are waiting for them to steep.

Personally I ignore all posts that begin with some variation of 'I just mixed this up yesterday and it's already bangin'.....

I'm frequently vaping dazcole's Dinner Lady: A Lemon Tart, it was the first DiY juice I mixed over a year ago, and almost always in my rotation. I typically have 2-3 bottles of whatever on-hand, and mix one of my old favorites, along with something newer.

My two non-Dinner Lady bottles at the moment are Mango Sticky Rice by /u/shyndo and One Night by /u/Philosaphucker. Mango Sticky Rice is my ADV at the moment, with an almost horchata-like main flavor note and a nice sweet mango right behind. Bought two flavors specifically to make this, and I'm not disappointed after my first bottle of it. One Night, I happened to have everything on-hand already from other recipes, and wanted to try something with a strong blackcurrant flavor. This recipe is crisp and sweet, a far cry from my usual desserts and custards. For me, One Night has almost completely replaced Grack Juice, as it scratches the same itch, but I don't feel like I have to re-wick after vaping it, as Grack settles in and doesn't leave when I want to flavor change after my tank is almost dry.

Well, it's not quite a recipe, but it's an idea, and a nudge on the right direction. This is what I've done with the Blueberry Trinity by u/EdibleMalfunction, and u/Vurve 's Best Damn Pink Lemonade:

Blue Lemonade

 • TFA Blueberry Extra 3%
 • FW Blueberry 2%
 • FA Bilberry 0.5%
 • FA Lemon Sicily 0.75%
 • LA Lemonade 6%

... It's a mashup, of sorts. Take the lemonade base out of Best Damn Pink Lemonade, add the Blueberry (holy) Trinity, and that's that. A couple days steep to smooth out the lemon harshness, blue lemon heaven. But I'm about to mix a v2, to see if it brings out the berries better, and tones down the citrus harshness:

Blue Lemonade V2

 • TFA Blueberry Extra 4%
 • FW Blueberry 3%
 • FA Bilberry 0.5%
 • FA Lemon Sicily 0.75%
 • LA Lemonade 5.5%

Let's see how that goes.

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

This version I did a while back was popular enough with those who tried it: FA Bilberry .5%

It may be an interesting idea, but I doubt it would get much action... there's basically three types of regulars and/or posters here - idiots who show up and just want to post clone requests in everywhere except the designated thread, people who'll read and follow the rules and are comfortable posting whatever, and those who just want to read/research without posting. Getting that third group to become part of the second is tough.

I assume that there are more people like me who mix up lots of the recipes from the community but aren't that confident that they would go and write a review on ATF. Commenting in such a transient thread and giving a casual review feels easier than posting on the ATF recipe.

Even if it's just a shout-out to a mixer whose recipe you're really digging :-)

11 points

by lNTERLINKEDover 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

This is how I feel. I feel terrible not leaving reviews for everything that I try on ATF as I'd appreciate the feedback on my recipes. I just don't feel knowledgable enough to add anything useful.

This is a more casual and interactive way to do it, IMO, and it may lead to me finally writing a full review.

3 points

by xx2000xxover 7 years ago

I feel the same way too and it's a shame because the people who aren't well known are less likely to get comments or stars while the well known people, who also have people following them can put out something not even half as good but get passive amount of praise.

1 points

Like I said, I like the concept. I like some feedback as much as anyone, especially if it's detailed. I just worry that after an initial flurry of activity because of it being new and shiny, the thread would eventually fall off the radar due to human nature. Trust me, I'd like to be wrong in this case... but I wouldn't count on it.

And BTW, obviously your comprehension levels are a little low - I never faulted anyone for wanting to clone something... I faulted people for being too lazy/stupid to follow simple rules.

Instead of who's recipes are you mixing threads I think it would be great to have a what are you mixing thread instead.

This covers the other people's recipes as well as on opportunity for people to post things they are currently working on and get insight from other people whether than be just a review, general help or ideas, etc.

Somewhere where once a week we can talk about what we have been mixing and working on and talk about it. Talk about our process. What needs fixing, what doesn't, what others think about it, etc.

Still plenty of room to discuss what recipes you are making from others but with a bit broader scope which could also boost participation.
