Suggestions for High Resistance Coils and "Easy" Single Coil RDA for Low Throat Hit (w/low wattage build)
submitted over 7 years ago by adntigger710

Hey all! So I've been attempting to completely quit smoking for years now (11 actually -- wow.) I've gotten myself to dual use, and have started DIY'ing juice for multiple reasons. My bf has also been vaping for a few yrs now. In order to flavor test what I'm making I need an RDA. Problem is, one of my main issues with moving over to vaping completely is throat hit and coughing. I've been able to reduce it a good amount via the normal suggestions (less pg, lower watts, etc). My bf has been testing for me, but I would also like to test as well as I'm a bit more discerning (as best I can with this kind of build.)

I need something like this to carry over to an RDA. I'd LOVE an easy to build on RDA as it's not something I was really looking to get into just yet (the extensive research/learning on DIY juice already takes up a bulk of my time.) Maybe a short list would make this easier:

RDA and build needs: Single coil Easy for beginners (easy coil install the best) Low wattage friendly Minimal throat hit Lower chance of leaking a plus

Totally ok with clones. I've been looking at RDA's like the Hadaly, Entheon, Pulse 22, Armor (though I see an SXK Armor 2.0 clone out now but no reviews for authentic nor clone. Is the authentic even released yet? Can't tell from their regular FB page.)

Also need to know what kind/gauge of coils would be best for me and how many wraps (I assume higher resistance?)

If I can grab some pre-made coils eventually that would be even better (I have Lupus and Fibromyalgia and sometimes my hands are painful and don't work the way I need them to.)

Thanks in advance for all of your help!

I'd recommend a wasp rda and those demon killer premade coils, they are kanthal and all resistances are on the case for easy reference

I'll second the motion on the Wasp Nano - a great, cheap, single coil RDA that delivers good flavor. And the Demon Killer coils are also very good - but be sure to pick up a coiling jig - you'll need to add or subtract 1/2 wrap to make them fit in a Wasp. Almost all pre-made coils have the leads sticking out on the same side - the Wasp needs the leads on opposite sides. If the coils are wrapped clockwise (or is it counter-clockwise? grin) it may seem like they don't fit because the Wasp was apparently made by a left-handed coil-wrapper . . . just turn them upside down and everything will fit just fine (it took me a while to figure that out - hahaha)

3rd this. Was new myself a few months back. It's a breeze and gives great flavor, better than any tank I've used. A cool jig is good, but even easier is pick up a cheap small screwdriver set. Most have a 2mm and 3mm head. Wrap your wire on there. There's tons of room and can make up for issues you might have made when wrapping. I started with 26 gauge stainless wire and think it's good because you can test out in wattage or temperature control and figure out what you like all on one coil. They take a minute to get here from china, but can be had for around $12, shipping included. Good luck.

Only reason I'd recommend OP use a coil jig over wrapping their coils by hand is because of their lupus. My mom has lupus and it regularly attacks the joints in her hands, and is the cause of quite painful arthritis. For someone with that ailment a coil jig would definitely make things much easier and less painful.

Thanks for the followup info my friend! Deffinitely stuff they'd want to know if they decide to purchase

Well damn look at that. I'm left-handed. Seems that would work out perfectly for me, lol.

Would just like to let OP know that the wasp nano is very small and very direct, your mouth very close to hot coil, and is prone to spitting if not wicked fairly precisely. Don't get me wrong though, the wasp is pretty good and inexpensive - and you can use a drip tip to distance yourself a little if required. Just worth pointing out.

You did your research. I just got into single coil RDA's myself about a month and a half ago. First was the Wasp, then the Kindbright Hadaly which most consider the best clone, and last the just released Entheon base with the Hadeon cap. I'm considering the pulse 22 as myfreedomsmokes has a deal on it for $16 this week. But you make just one stop and pick everything up from 3fvape.

From what you read I bet you would think the Hadaly would be on top but that's not the case at all. The Entheon with the new cap I got about 6 days ago is everything the Hadaly should have been. Then the wasp nano which is a very close second. It's a harder build to get right, and how it's built should produce the best flavor from possibly anything ever made as /u/MortenOen breaks down on his vid.

https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCMS4GxDHLPvXr5oQrthU60A/videos

He'll be your best friend on breaking RDA's down on a science level and unlike 95% of the BS reviewers he, like Busardo/DJLsb are 100% legit.

I'm still learning because you want to wick hard, tons of cotton, and playing with different builds and then pick up Tony's mod before the shit storm happened. DJ reviewed it and was luke warm on it and it's going for $65 too so I think I'll skip it and continue to do more research on what mech mod to get.

For your coils just go to www.advancedvaporsupply.com the best in the world. Don't be scared that they only do SS and if you don't use temp control. Run it in wattage mode and they have a video on how to dry burn but I bought the 5 x 5 feet sample and roll my own and space them but of course you can do the same for the premade ones.

I'd go with the Entheon and the Wasp for sure. The Hadaly leaks like a mofo and has a small ass deck and I'm not alone in saying that but a lot could be user error. Same with the Wasp, I build high just above the slot and I sometimes get spit back and it's hot AF but I just throw a big 510 drip tip and all is well. Best part is you can get all 3 for the same price than a new RTA from the big players for $30

I don't go nuts and Maybe 30-40 watts around .3'ish usually a 3 or 3.5mm. I mix at 63/37 VG/PG so it's thinner than most. The 24 is $2 more but most prefer the 22.

If you got the money I'd actually do Entheon/Wasp for $10 each and pick up a Squonk there too. Because the Entheon is just like the Hadaly I'd blind buy and hit myfreedom for the pulse 22 which is a steal right now and will be able to experience 3 different types to learn on in the world of single coil RDA's which is the hottest thing right now and for good reason.

Edit: NEWMFS15 = promo code for myfreedomsmokes and with that the pulse is $16.39 total including shipping.

24mm Gorge RDA for easy rewicking, flavor changes, and day to day use. Great for regular dripping as well as squonking. Flavor is good but not fantastic. Single coil.

My experience with Pulse 22: 3pc design is a pain in the ass for flavor changes. Top caps too tight and hard to remove. Metal is too thin and I'm certain I'll bend it out of round one day. Slightly better flavor than the Gorge but just not worth it to me.

An old school magma clone can be had for cheap. The only problem is they can get leaky if tilted due to the design. A 2mm 28g 10 wrap should keep you around 13w and you can switch use nic salts for less throat hit

You're not the first person to suggest a magma. Which version? I see a few (and wld like to grab a clone if possible.)

Ive never purchased from this company but this is the version I was referring to http://vikingvapes.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=402

Making and installing coils is super easy. Wicking is the difficult part. For easy, go with one of the mesh RDAs.

That coughing and throat hit thing is crazy when you think about smoking and not coughing then u think those no good mofo’s, what on earth did they put in cigarettes to keep me from coughing? Eek no bueno... I guess it’s just a sensitivity to pg? My uncle used to cough his head off but I like to think he’s getting better and used to it, if u will so I hope that happens for you too...;)

by lNTERLINKEDover 7 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

I found it was to do with the way I was inhaling. When I smoked, I would take the smoke into my mouth on the drag, then inhale it into my lungs all at once. I can't do this with a subohm vape, it makes me cough every time. Instead I inhale directly to the lungs, and it's smooth sailing.

I've given this advice to smokers that tried vaping but gave up because it made them cough, and they all said it was much better.

My one piece of advice when it comes to building, be careful. I've been careless multiple times and stab my thumb with the wire. Smaller gauges don't hurt as bad but 20 gauge to the thumb is a crappy time. Less wraps = quicker heat up time.(Not always a good thing) More wraps = longer heat up process and usually more vapor and may require more voltage/wattage. Try them both and see which works best for you. For a lower wattage build 28 and 26 gauge would be a good starting point.

This isn't a purely single coil rda, but it has single coil capabilities. My number one recommendation for you would be the dark horse. It has a boatload of different airflow combinations you can make, and in all my time vaping in it, it has never treated me wrong. Plus it's very easy to install coils on, and it's a few years old so you could find it for pretty cheap online

Couple of suggestions, first for the RDA, a dead rabbit clone, cheap well built and functional as a single or dual coil build. It is easy to work on, has nice deep wells and the top cap comes off for easy rejuicing.

For beginners with RDA's it isn't a bad idea to get some pre-coiled wire, they are still super cheap compared to factory made coils. here is 100 kanthal coils @ 1.0 ohm for $5. they come in lots of different metals and different resistances if you look around a little. But this lets you get used to installing and wicking before you have to worry about wrapping and fiddling with them.

As for cutting down throat hit, Max-VG all the way. All the recipes on http://e-liquid-recipes.com/ can be reconfigured to max-vg in the adapt recipe tab. Another thing to consider is Nicotine Salts, they have a smoother throat hit, than traditional free-base nicotine. Here is some more info, but check reviews out as well people are shocked at how smooth the throat hit is.

Ha, funny you mention that, I was debating about where to post it. Figured the DIY community would have a better understanding of the WHY and WHAT I need it for. Checked and saw others asking about RDAs in regards to flavor here so chose this.

This is ejuice specific. Flavors and mixing. A great Reddit but you should read the sidebar and use the search functions first before posting in any Reddit forum.

Pretty sure a wasp nano requires ejuice... and she said she did look and chose to post here. Not sure why the unfriendliness? Having a bad day? I use derringer clones myself from FasTTech, super cheap and only about 10 days shipping and it’s free. Get a few different gauge, they’re cheap enough, some easier to build on, I use kanthal 28g. Welcome and good luck!
