Hope this flavor of the week cuts the mustard: It's CUSTARD!
submitted over 7 years ago by ID10-T

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is: CUSTARD

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

...cuts the what?

Here's my custard from a couple months back, Maple Almond Vanilla Custard 🍁🍮 🌰. I'm using INW Creme Brulee and LA Cream Cheese Icing to pull out the custard flavor, which is sort of novel. I love the stuff!

Flavor|% -------|- Biscuit (Jungle Flavors)|1.50 Cream Cheese Icing (LA)|1.50 Creme Brulee (INAWERA)|2.00 Yellow Cake (Jungle Flavors)|2.00 Marzipan (INAWERA)|1.00 RY4 Double (Jungle Flavors)|2.00 Vanilla Shisha (INAWERA)|1.50

Oh No! I think it happened because I bought a 120 ml bottle of CAP Vanilla Custard. That had never happened before. which must have wrecked the forecasts of the whole diacetyl supply chain since such a thing had not happened before. My bad.

Yep. It's all your fault.

Oh, you think diacetyl is your ally. But you merely adopted the diacetyl; I was born in it, moulded by it. I didn't see the clean version until I was already a man, by then it was nothing to me but BLINDING! The diketones betray you, because they belong to me!

Is this Diacetyl shortage actually a real thing? I've only seen that post on the chef's group mentioned and can't tell if it's a joke or not.

3 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

No there’s not really a diacetyl shortage. Why someone would say that there is? Not entirely sure but the best theory I have is that is a situation where lying to one of your vendors about the availability of a product is incredibly stupid, but just coming out and saying you don’t want to sell it to them because you know where it will wind up would be even worse PR.

2 points

by br4d24over 7 years ago

Ah dang so it has something to do with that whole situation. Gah it just keeps getting more ridiculous.

1 points

by Deubelbeissover 7 years ago

I have an honest question. Isn’t diacetyl directly linked to popcorn lung? Why use it in vape juice? Isn’t there a movement to get it removed from juices?

by Exploring_Uranusover 7 years ago

That sounds pretty close to what I'm vaping right now. I did a riff on a recipe you posted a while ago (Lemon Curdstard). I took out the Cheesecake Graham crust (that never tastes quite right to me), amped up the lemon, and added Orange. Let me see if I can format this correctly...

  • CAP Vanilla custard 4%
  • CAP Juicy lemon 5%
  • CAP Lemon Sicily 3%
  • TFA French vanilla II 1%
  • INW (I think) Orange 2%
  • TFA Whipped Cream 2%

I have tried a lot of different store-bought lemon flavors, but none of them taste as good as this. I just did a shake-and-vape, and it tastes great to me. I'll mix up another batch & let it steep while I vape this.

I might drop the orange down to 1.5% and raise the Lemon Sicily by 0.5% on the next batch, though. In any case, thanks for a great starting point!

I mostly fucks with INW Custard because I’m not a huge vanilla fan, and I don’t really get vanilla from INW.

I’ve got my own strawberry milk cream thing that’ll probably just stay private forever because who needs more strawberry and cream recipes?

Lil bit of custard in my Humbug recipe.

Using some CAP VC v1 in this VCT clone. I need to check in on that now that I’m thinking about it.

Got some more CAP in my Tripoli “as close as I can get” tribute.

Without getting down and dirty searching through my recipes, that’s all I can think of off the top of my head. I don’t use it often, and I don’t use it well, but I do sometimes use it.

It’s really weird they don’t have Custard. They’ve got so many other INW flavors. It just don’t make no sense. I picked up Creme Brûlée a while back, but haven’t messed with it too much. Can’t even remember what I was working on when I used it. Probably some failed idea for mixers club.

I need to rewick my testing RDAs to do a good side by side, but just a quick drop of each is telling me it’s pretty close. I’m guessing they probably use CAP Vanilla Custard v2, which I don’t have. TFA Turkish might need to come down just a hair, but it’s actually pretty good where it is now.

I've mostly used custards to help make otherwise unwanted flavors more palatable for friends. otherwise i don't have much to say about them. Custard's not on my list of favorite flavors.

in this recipe RY4 custard, I used CAP VCV1 to give the already delicious RY4 a more creamy, thick, and full flavor which passed the test for a picky friend. He said he did not want and could not vape tobacco flavors. That recipe changed his mind.

Though, to be totally honest, I think that RY4 flavors on their own would change most people's minds. more notes on the recipe page.

Manu. | Flavor | Pct. ---|---|---- CAP | Bavarian Cream | .75 FA | Cookie | .75 DFS | Holy Grail RY4 | 4 FA | Marshmallow | 1 CAP | Vanilla Custard | 2

steep: 25-30 days best around 70/30-80/20

Mr 10 - can you please answer a couple of Q's? They are reformulating INW Custard? Do you know why? I've finally sourced some (there seems to be only 1 shop in the whole of Australia that sell it) and it arrived yesterday. It smells amazing but i haven't mixed with it yet. From what I've gathered here, it seems to be mixed quite low (1%-3% tops), and I'm just thinking of all the different ways to use it. The recipe above looks nice so i might start with that, and then get creative after. I love Inawera.

1 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I don’t know any facts about that, it just seems inevitable though. They reformulate everything, especially the best things, and the reformations are never improvements.

5 points

by Cocky1976over 7 years ago

I've posted a previous version of this before but it was quite high percentage flavor wise. I reworked it a bit so hopefully it's ok to post it.

Vanilla custard overload v2

  • Bavarian cream (TPA) 1%

  • cheesecake Graham crust (TPA)2%

  • creme brulee (inw) 1.5%

  • French vanilla (Cap) 2%

  • vanilla bean ice cream (Cap) 2%

  • vanilla custard v1 (cap) 4%

  • *white chocolate (RF SC) 1%

The white chocolate is optional as it's not a really common flavor, it does add a bit more creaminess though. This is really vapeable after a day or so but given a few weeks the flavors really blend together for a decadent vanilla treat.

Creamy vanilla goodness. Try on day 2, if you like it carry on vaping (I really like it when it's freshly mixed). If you want it a bit more coherent, let it steep for two weeks. This is really dreamy and very vanilla-y stuff. One of my favourites.

(DFS) Holy Vanilla: 0.5

(INW) Shisha Vanilla: 1.5

(CAP) Vanilla Custard v1: 7

(TPA) Bavarian cream: 1

(TPA) Vanilla swirl: 1.5

(TPA) VBIC: 2

4 points

by RamboUnchainedover 7 years ago"I Bet I Could Clone That"

Cap Vanilla Custard is utilized in nearly 1/3 of my 145 recipes.

For simplicity's sake, Cap VCv1 @ 5% + basically any fruit flavor at a percentage you're comfortable with is great after a week.

I get a noticeable bit of lemon from FA Custard so I only use it to make lemon-centric flavors. Works well @3% with a bit of FA Lemon Sicily and 1% FLV Cream.

That's dependent on the flavor. Some stuff doesnt taste well above 1% and some stuff doesnt well til you get above 3% lol. This is a good place to start. And here's a good read on single flavor testing.

2 points

by br4d24over 7 years ago

Tried it at 8% and have it steeping, seem to have different feelings about it every time I give it a taste. Also mixed some with sugar cookie and ODF vanilla to experiment and it turned out ok, but I think cap sugar cookie is carrying most of the weight in the recipe. Seems like the custard and vanilla kind of just moistened it up and added some extra butter flavor and texture. My pallet isn't all that developed yet so I struggle sometimes to identify exactly what I'm tasting.

Vanilla ruyan custard, was given a primer on here from someone who's name I have forgot, is the sleeper of all custards.

I've never seen anyone other than this individual mention it. But it is creamy, eggy, and caramel all in one go. And you get it within 24hrs of mixing! This is definitely the best for snv custards.

I mixed a simple 1-2-3 with some pecans. It was divine after a day. Don't think itll last the month, i know nuts benefit from a long wait... Recipe as follows:

3% wf vanilla ruyan custard 2% cap butter pecan 1% cap pecan
