"This tastes/smells NOTHING like..." Ever ordered a new flavor and thought this? Don't exclude human error.
submitted over 7 years ago by nabinko

It's been over a year since my first DIY order. Some of the flavors I was most excited for were Swedish Gummy (TFA), Rainbow Candy (FW), and Rainbow Drops (TFA), but after opening up every bottle to test them by smell, neither of those three were anything like I was expecting. The swedish gummy smelled of strong cinnamon and the two "skittles" weren't that good. I tossed all three bottles along with a few others into my "to sell" flavors pile and Guava (TFA) went into the garbage bin. Fast forward to about 3 weeks ago, I go back to my "to sell" pile to go through all of the disappointing flavors I've collected and pulled out a few including the swedish gummy (I tried working with the rainbow candy but it never came out how i wanted). It was still no where even close to swedish fish but this time I thought it smelled good and wanted to make something with it. I mixed it up with some other flavors and I liked it so much that I finished that 10ml in the same week. I had to have more of this eliquid i just made. I put in an order for a bunch of stuff and got a big bottle of it along with Swedish Fish (FW) hoping to fine a similar taste. This time around, I put in my order with a different vendor. I couldn't wait to get them in so I could make my new favorite eliquid creation. They came in, I got to mixing, opened my fresh bottle of swedish gummy, took a nice big whiff.....SWEDISH FISH. Anyways, long story short, I was able to figure out that Swedish Gummy I had was actually filled with TFA Cinnamon Red Hot. I got Nicotine River to send me a bottle of each the Swedish Gummy and the Cinnamon Red Hot and I was able to confirm it.

I let it go but now the Rainbow Drops (TFA) that i don't like (imo not even close to skittles) smells identical to this new Fruit Circles (TFA) flavor I just got in. Can anyone confirm if the Rainbow Drops and the Fruit Circles smell the same?

Has anyone had a similar experience? How many flavors do you have that aren't what's on the label? How would you even know?

UPDATE 1:

Just got in a replacement bottle of Rainbow Drops TFA from Nicotine River.

Wrong flavor in the first bottle ordered confirmed. Thank you to all who replied about it not supposed to be anything like Fruit Circles.

Nicotine River's customer service was great. The owner, Grant, really does get on the phone with his small time customers to handle issues. He even offered to overnight it.

Was told I would be sent a bottle of VG for free but didn't get it.

New bottle of Rainbow Drops TFA: This is what I wanted from the go, it smells delicious. Can't wait to try and clone that eliquid I initially purchased this flavor for... OVER A YEAR AGO.

Also, the new bottle of Cinnamon Red Hot has a really nasty aftertaste. Could it be that the mixed up bottle with Cinnamon Red Hot sat for a year?

UPDATE 2: The VG I was promised just got here. They sent out a whole gallon.

Out of about 100 flavors that I purchased and worked with for a few years only about maybe 6 were worth not throwing in the trash.

Just like most "premium" e-liquids you get in shops.

I could see that happening with tobacco flavors.

Care to say what those six flavors are???

Most of them are Liquid Barn flavors these days. You can't seem to go wrong with any of them. As well as:

** = I don't use them anymore. They're ok.

  • FA - Tutti Frutti
  • Capellas - Strawberry (Sweet Strawberry)
  • TFA - Watermelon**
  • TFA - Ripe Banana
  • TFA - Ripe Strawberry
  • TFA - Juicy Peach**
  • Capellas - Blueberry Cinnamon Crumble**
  • Capellas - Apple Pie** (until you get even mild vape tongue/olfactory fatique)
  • Capellas - Banana

Here's a few that I did not like to use at all at any percentage or combined flavor combination that I found (I do not mix at high percentages alone or total and always start very low).

  • LA - Vanilla
  • TFA - Cheesecake (Graham Crust)
  • TFA - Cotton Candy
  • TFA - Gummy Candy
  • TFA - Sour
  • TFA - Koolada
  • TFA - Mint Candy (disgusting imo)
  • FA - Orange
  • FA - Almond
  • FA - Nut Mix
  • IW - Cool Mint
  • FW - Menthol (prefer diluted crystals)

Nicvape Dark Raz is a secret weapon in my mixing. Hangs with creams and custards better than anything I have ever tried, even back in my early days of +8 percent custard mixing. :) May be a bad batch, never had nail polish remover smell. Rocks with other fruits, but 2 percent is max I play with. YMMV

I can confirm that they do not at all taste or smell the same at all.

Rainbow drops and fruit circles do not smell the same. Fruit Circles smells like Lysol (lemon cleaning product). Regarding Cinnamon Red Hot... it does melt plastic so if your mixture was in a plastic container and sitting for an extended time, it could definitely impact the flavor.

The original bottle that I suspect to be Red Hot TFA (99.9% sure) sat for a year and darkened a bit. Tasted great with no after taste. The new bottle I received, smells the same. It tastes the same until that aftertaste hits you. Maybe a bad batch? It also turns almost anything I mix with it very cloudy and almost milky white.

I have a bottle of Nicvape Dark Razz that I'm fairly certain was accidentally filled with nail polish remover.

Probably still better than that TFA Guava I threw out.

bought 120ml FA Joy during the hype, still haven't found a use for it. Best described as saltine crackers... in any percentage. adding .1%, let's sprinkle some salted tops in yo' mix..

Human error, mine - Don't buy into hype

It sucks because as you get more into it, you realize that buying the 10-13ml bottles is the cheapest option but the least economical. Plus if it's something you end up really liking its gone just like that and you have to reorder and potentially loose out paying for shipping again. Too bad there aren't any options to at least smell/test the flavoring locally before you buy.

I have 30ml with about 6 drops out of it.

Tastes like PBR that sat in the sun for a month.

I've had the same problem with a few flavors but never complained to the company about it because I wasn't sure how to prove the flavors were incorrect other than sending them back. I just didn't want the extra hassle.

If it is a flavor that you really want and think it's not right, I would try to get the vendor to send out another. I wish I did earlier because it was for a clone I wanted to try out but gave up.

Also, from what they said, flavors getting mixed up happens more than you think.

Happened to me with vape wild before (I know it's not diy). Ordered tiramisu, opened it up and filled my tank. It was strawberries and cream.

2 points

by nabinkoover 7 years ago

That's weird. Aren't those only filled at the manufacturer? With the concentrates, at least I know most brands are filled by the vendor.

3 points

by Binsky89over 7 years ago

I think this was before they got their giant production facility (so maybe around 2014). All I know is it was straight up strawberry, and there's no mistaking that for tiramisu.

Those 2 flavors smell nothing alike. I have used both a few times and I am 100% certain on this.

Human error can come into play anywhere. I personally enjoy the rainbow drops more with a little added key lime or lemon in it.

So it's actually supposed to smell/taste like skittles? That explains why my attempt at a certain "Skittles Type" clone didn't work out so well. Thanks for the feedback.

To me, it tastes like the flavor you get after chewing up a handful of skittles. The flavors are there, but melded together.

That is why I add one to the profile, just makes something pop out with a more generic fruit candy background.

I just got the replacement. Spot on description of the flavor. Thank you.

OK that sounds like exactly what I was looking for. I will give making a skittles type eliquid another go after I get a real bottle of rainbow drops. Thanks

Ive mostly had issues with the concentrate smelling really nice and accurate from the bottle, but no matter how low in % I went, after passaging through the coils, the flavor was dreadfull. Those flavors often went into my kitchen where I mix them with various foods and beverages. TFA French Vanilla Creme for example, is too peppery through a heated coil, but its delicious when added to fruit milk smoothies.

Most manufacturers dont test their flavours in heated form. Theyre food flavors after all. Some companies like FlavorArt however are starting to take the lead. Their Pazzo line seems to suggest that they are making flavors specifically for vaping.

Yeah, but fuck them. Until they cut ties with FANA.

What is FANA? I'm assuming it's not the Florida Association of Nurse Anesthetists? lol

FlavorArt North America

AKA the assholes trying to tell mixers what flavors they can and can't buy.

Literally just got super dissapointed that inawera reformulated one of my favorite flavorings. Like 10 shades darker and smells completely different. Wasn't on the list that's been posted either so who knows how many flavors have been compromised... I feel like they should name the new flavoring v2 at the very least so you know not to order it

1 points

by nabinkoover 7 years ago

I've seen some flavorings that have gotten darker in color from age. Some even smelled funky. Could have been that your new bottle was filled from an old batch.

2 points

by IceEichelover 7 years ago

Unfortunately I have stuff from 2 years ago that is wayyyyyyyyyyy lighter... Plus I've gotten the darker stuff from 2 different places

1 points

by nabinkoover 7 years ago

I would contact either the vendor or Inawera directly to find out. I'd be upset too if one of my favorite flavors changed without warning!

I once ordered some INW DNB, a 10ml bottle. My second order or the flavor. I don't use a ton of the stuff, but i wanted a backup bottle on hand since it's used in a recipe that a friend's really likes. It wasn't from the same place i purchased my first bottle.

When it arrives, it was clear. Crystal clear. I can't describe what it smells like but it's absolutely not DNB, and it doesn't smell like any of the plethora of other flavors in my inventory.

Ordered a 30ml bottle from another vendor and it arrived with that signature black-as-night color, and the proper nasty dirty scent.

1 points

by nabinkoover 7 years ago

Yeah, someone screwed up something here for sure. Did you contact the vendor?

by yoopergeekover 7 years ago

Life, well work, was way too busy to deal with it at the time (was pulling a few weeks of 80 hours a week.) The rest of my order was fine and i didn't absolutely need it at the time. Didn't have the time to deal with a $3 oopsie.

Now, the other time when i ordered 50 60ml chubby gorilla bottles and received 50 120ml bottles? Oh yeah....

1 points

by nabinkoover 7 years ago

80 hours! WTF

For me it's just more about knowing for sure what's going in my recipe. I couldn't imagine working on a recipe for so long to find out when you reorder the flavor, it's different, and not know which is wrong and what you really used.

TFA Dr pop smells and tastes exactly like Dr Pepper but when its vaped at any percentage is tastes like burnt sugar and nothing else. It's truly terrible.

1 points

by nabinkoover 7 years ago

You could have the wrong flavor and not even know it, especially if you have nothing to compare it to. Makes you wonder how many bottles you have that aren't what the label says?

1 points

by Yote224over 7 years ago

Are you just going off of smell? My favorite juice is an Apple Jack's flavor that's on point but if you were to just smell it from the bottle you'd assume it's liquid paste.

... am I vaping paste?

1 points

by nabinkoover 7 years ago

I would say 99% of the concentrates I have taste how I would expect them to taste based off smell. They're were only a few I didn't trying mixing with because of how they smelled.

2 points

by Yote224over 7 years ago

Understandable. I guess I'm just being anecdotal here but I make quite a few of my own things and I'd just suggest not giving up on something because of how it smelled. The Apple Jack's juice I have being one example, home made wines being another. It might not end up like you expected but doesn't mean it's a complete wash.

2 points

by nabinkoover 7 years ago

I agree. It took me a while to realize that every concentrate works differently. Especially with smell to taste, it could be super strong and have a not so appealing smell, but just a tiny bit mixed in your creation is exactly the taste you wanted.
