Bought some PEG 400 and holy hell did it taste bad. Isn’t it supposed to have essentially no flavor of its own? Because damn..
Yeah tried PEG 400 before and it tasted like burnt silica wick it was nasty.
Never tried it but I was certain there's a reason the industry doesn't really use it.
Mostly because there's a lot of masochists that are into the pain (aka 'throat hit') that PG supplies. And because the stoners use it so much.
There's also the issue of price... PG is still cheapest.
Can someone tell me why people are using VG/PG substitutes? What was lacking in those two?
Some people have, in varying degrees , an adverse reaction to PG.
I always hear the claims, but never specifics, nor research, nor what they were actually vaping.
I've vaped 80% PG blends before. Was fine, but that was because I was vaping at like 10w using steel mesh. I tried the same thing in an RDA at 40W+ and almost killed myself...
Heck even 70VG/30PG blends at like 80W-100W+ can get harsh depending on flavoring and nicotine and things like that.
But flat out adverse reaction to PG in any portion? I've never seen the effects, just anecdotal stories.
I personally experience mild versions of skin rash, blisters and skin pealing in my mouth, sore throat, and it's definitely caused by the PG. For me there's no difference between 100% or 20% PG, and below that I lose too much flavor. Fortunately I can ignore or prevent the symptoms, but I feel sorry for those with stronger reactions. It's real and it sucks.
For me anything over around 20% and my skin breaks out quite bad and is extremely itchy. Unbearably so. I also get a weird sensation in my ears. I want to say ringing but that not quite it. Definitely uncomfortable though. So, I keep it below 20%. Thought I’d try the 400 but the taste is just way to nasty.
People can only speak from experience I guess. In my own experience, any juice with above 30% PG absolutely wrecks my head, and I feel it after only a couple of minutes of vaping it. Even if I don't know how much PG is in the liquid, I can guarantee that if it has more than 30% I will be able to tell because of headaches (it has happened before). I don't know why this happens, but it does. I make my juices with 70/30 and I'm completely fine that way.
For me, If I use anything over 50% PG (or less than that If I vape too much too fast), I start to feel like someone raked a sharp fork along the back of my throat and filled my mouth with hair and I start having coughing fits. It's the same reaction I have to dogs and cats if I'm around them too long and I have to take allergy medicine to get it to go away.
Nauseated... dizzy... overall just feel like shit if I try to use anything above 30% PG, and with an RDA, that's even pushing it. Preferably, I'm at 80vg/20pg all day everyday.
I vape low wattage. (between 21-25 watts) (2.80 volts) I've also been aware of this sensitivity for about 5 years now... so I don't think it's equipment related. (but I will say in tanks it's not as severe)
I would be cautious using PEG at any molecular wt. as it will degrade to formic acid in air and heat
At what temperature? 'Heat' doesn't mean much in terms of usefulness. For example, if I'm using TC and aiming for a cool vape, is there a real risk? How about if I want to vape closer to 420F? Or is it only a problem for those who push things to the extreme?
It will do it at low temps, meaning less than 100°C, but as you get closer to the BP of VG (290°C) it will degrade fairly rapidly. I used PEG in grad school, which was a while ago, but in general I wouldn't recommend it at any vaping temp.
Hmm. Maybe I need to run some numbers on this, but just thinking, this could actually be useful... assuming formic acid could react to freebase nic in the same way other acids do, and create a nic salt... it could actually not only not increase throat hit, but reduce it. Just need to figure out the precise percentage to use in a mix.
I have used PEG 400, mine has a slight off taste, no more so than VG or PG tastes. But I'll use it to cut the throat hit and help keep the coils cleaner(temperature). I like it but probably won't buy again because of the cost. I'm using it at 10%PEG mixed with 50% Nic Salts/ 50% PG Nicotine.
Yea I picked up some EJ mix a while back to make wax-infused juice; they use PEG. Tasted so bad that I threw away the juice and the gram of wax that was in it. :/
I even tried adding flavoring and I couldn't cover the PEG taste.
Where did you buy it from?
My-eLiquid , but it’s not the company that’s bad per say. I buy my VG from them and the pre mixed bases they sell are great as well. The small handful of flavors I’ve gotten from them were spot on. I’ve actually been trying to get them to apply for our approved vendor list.
Right on. I actually have a bottle of peg400 from nic river I have yet to open so I was just curious if that's where you got yours...
The problem with flavor carriers is that they carry flavors. Basically, if it sat somewhere with nasty smells in the air, or was stored in the wrong conditions, it will pick up those flavors. It could also have gone bad in shipping. It does freeze at 40 degrees farenheit, so it's pretty plausible this time of year, although I don't know if that changes the flavor. I've definitely gotten nasty PG before, though.

How big of this is a problem for pg in plastic bottles? I have a couple hundred mls that's a year or two old in a plastic bottle from wizard labs and a quart from essential depot that are both sitting on a shelf in my room. I keep an ldpe 120ml bottle for the pg currently in use. Never noticed any off tastes but for long term storage/use should the pg hold up well in plastic?
Plastic is fine, keep cool and out of the sun. PG has a shelf life of two years, VG one. If it starts to taste, smell or look bad, dump it. Byproducts of oxidation are bad.
