Advice for a DIY Inventory managing application
submitted over 7 years ago by aBiGFaTZEBRa

Hi all, I'm currently working on a basic desktop application that keeps track of a DIY Inventory and Recipe List. What sort of features would you all think would make for a well put together application of this sort? So far, what I have is very minimalist; just a main menu, an inventory screen, a recipe screen, and the ability to edit the two. Constructive criticism welcome. Thanks!

EDIT: Also if anybody would be interested in a barebones 'beta' type release once it's functional let me know. Would make for some good feedback!

It would be cool it you could keep track the amount of flavors left in each bottle. Like you mark an addition to your inventory as full when you make a recipe it would subtract the amount used from your inventory.

Kinda a useless feature unless you use it right from your first order. Otherwise you don't have a clear value for each.

Hotrod's Juice Calculator will do this.

Didn't realize it existed before yesterday, but yeah you're pretty much right. Thought it would make for a good personal project!

I've used this for years to do everything mentioned. I keep my inventory accurate so I know exactly how much of everything I have at one time and know when I should start reordering and how much I need to reorder.

Has made my DIY life a hundred times easier. I've tried multiple calculators but always come back to this one.

Might be beyond my knowledge at this moment, but I'm definitely gonna have to look into this, thank you!

barcodes are pretty painless to setup. you just need to find a lib to generate them based on whatever unique key you have tied to the recipe.

Would be cool if it came preloaded with all the concentrates.

Would love this, and if possible an Android/iOS app with up to date concentrate database and being able to write notes, oh and a GitHub type updates to check the changes done to the recipe.

As in seeing log updates, minor changes in % changes or switching out concentrates; i get that you can write down notes but being able to track changes without going having to write detailed notes would be awesome for me.

Personally I have something similar for my shop, we use excel for inventory and recipes. I can mostly do the math in my head for a recipe but on my off-days I have it so it will calculate the percentage of a concentrate for a 10ml, 15ml, 30ml, 60ml, 120ml, 250ml, 1L and 1 US GAL, it's also a good sanity check.

The inventory is a great idea but honestly not as practical in a real world application. I have one but it's out of date at the moment since it's not quite as practical to enter in all these values by hand every time I made a single batch, it's just a simple table that states the concentrate name, manufacturer, age and quantity. I like the idea of incorporating the recipe sheet and the inventory together so if you could state you made a gallon batch of "xxx" it will remove whatever it takes to make said recipe out of the inventory. Another idea is make it change the font color in the inventory to red or something when you hit a certain threshold left and possibly green when you reach a certain quantity. I'm just spit-balling ideas here aha. I might take a whack at this in excel, linking Google Drive into the whole equation once it's finished would also make it so you can get a live view from any device, including tablets and phones.

Juice Grinder is a free program with inventory (Among every other ejuice calculator option you could think of). Probably the best one out there.

You could add exact bases and aromas densities for perfect weight calculations, I've gathered this list from various found here https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/12G_JfUy9exPiCJJ9DwcH4Yu_liEHXVffmBdLuWuGzn0/edit?usp=sharing

This is awesome, thank you! I guess what I could do from here is automatically grab all this info if the flavor is contained, or have it be manually entered if it can't be found. Also, out of curiosity, what do you mean by aromas density? Is that specific weight?

Yes, my mother language in not english, here in Spain density and specific weight are synonyms.

They're similar in English, but density is generally interpreted as less technical in nature.
