[suggestion for discussion] group flavor review?
submitted over 7 years ago by isuamadog

Hi everyone. I’m a new (6 months) mixer and after seeing some folks picking up the flavors deal from one drop, I was wondering if the forum would consider trying a mini-series of flavor reviews. This would be different from flavor of the week. In FotW, I feel like it’s one flavor done a variety of ways. A group effort in what profiles could be made using one flavor.

My idea for this is different. Instead of one user using all his/her knowledge and palette to research a flavor tester, maybe there could be a mini series of one drop flavor reviews with the idea that new folks like me can participate in the flavor review process and learn tips on how to do it. Is this something that folks would be interested in?

I love the faq Fridays. Those posts are fantabulous. Maybe this could line up like if something comes up on one thread, then there could be a follow up faq Friday that addresses a particular mixing/testing/whatever issue.

Feel free to disregard but I personally would love to see this happen. I feel like there’s so much great experience here but always look for ways to bridge the gap between the experienced and myself. I remember the first time I read about tfa honey and was like, oh shit so I wasnt crazy!

Thanks for considering.

/u/Apexified would be just the guy to take point on something like this.

I just ordered 15/16 of them myself, so I'd have to be some special kind of ass to not volunteer to participate. I volunteer to participate.

I appreciate the vote against being an ass ;)

It sounds a lot like the goal of /r/CloudCollective. I like the idea /u/isuamadog, the biggest issue I see is drumming up enough participation with everyone on the same page. I actually started /r/FlavorNotes a couple years ago, prior to the surge in reviews here, with a similar goal in mind; A place where people could kind of workshop around brands, profiles and to a lesser extent, specific flavors. But then the single flavor reviews started trending and FOTW was revived so I didn't see a reason to develop the idea further.

But your idea sounds like a nice middle ground between FOTW and single flavor reviews. I'd love to help out if I can :)

This all sounds cool. Not sure how good a job I could even do with loads of time. Nor with the schedule I have now. If I’m lucky, I get time to mix every few weeks. Which was sort of naturally working out for me. I’d make a few bottles and then have the time to steep and try by the time I can make another round so the next mix would be an actual adjustment and not a stab in the dark.

That said, I still feel woefully inexperienced. But being limited to 5 and trying to come up with diff variations sounds awesome. Really cool stuff. I’d even be willing to buy 5 flavors a month to keep up if I’d end up with a decent recipe from the group at the end.

Like if there weren’t enough people to make teams just one person picks 5 and the rest work on it for a month? Can you add one secret flavor of your own like a wild card? I like limitations to spark creativity.

Tl;dr Early morning precoffee ramblings. Sounds awesome. Maybe just what I was looking for.

Don't worry. You're still special.

Edit/added: a quick review of upcoming flavor of the weeks include at least four flavors that are in the new one drop line. And over the next two months even more.

Another idea could be to even have a single company flavor review of the week that coincides with each FotW? Idk just ideas. It’s the teacher in me always trying to organize my learning and create a digital community. Please forgive my 6am overzealousness.

I like your idea, but how is this different then any of the actual flavor reviews that go up?

Flavor reviews may seem random to an average newbie. Or super specific. Here we have an opportunity for us all to try the same flavors at $12 entry price. I can flavor test alongside much more experienced users and have discussion around flavors rather than maybe never buying a random pickle flavor and seeing if I like it as much as the next person.

People pretty much do the same thing when commenting on the review posts. I guess I’m just not seeing how this idea is different enough from those posts. That $12 total price is only good until Sunday.

People who have experience with a flavor already comment on flavor reviews. I have rarely seen a FotW post that covered a flavor I already have. Let alone a flavor a group of people are purchasing at the very same moment at a sweet entry price.

Sounds like an awesome idea. I have all 16 flavors on the way so I’m excited to participate and to hear what more experienced mixers have to say also.

Sure, I'm in. they haven't shipped yet though... and i need some smaller bottles... also we can probably skip the menthol unless it's more interesting than 5% menthol crystals dissolved in PG.

I'd be more interested in a recipe review thread. Where people who mixed some of the previous month's recipes (or current month, if the recipes were SnV instead of steepers) commented on how things turned out. Sorta like mixer's club, only everyone mixes their own rather than having to involve postal services (and a little more useful to those outside murica.)

That sounds interesting too. Yet I’d likely not have all the stuff to make something. I’m always trying to figure out how to learn from this forum by connecting rather than by trial and error. I could that being an awesome experience if someone were to explain how to sub or what to leave out based on my limited stash. I could see that being a really good learning experience. Great idea. I hope one takes hold.

Ah. I started out by trying to develop recipes... it's not the suggested approach, but when one dislikes fruit-cream blends, doesn't like strawberries or anything that tastes like peach, can't stand vanilla, and doesn't vape baked goods? Yeah, not a lot of recipes out there. So I by necessity did the development approach.

Jeez what’s left, pickle? You must tobacco it up. Or go straight cake?

I’m currently like 50/50 diy/commercial right now. I love being able to whip up a new mix when the mood strikes. And the infinite varieties of pink lemonade. Kind of hard to mess that one up but somehow I manage. :)

Mostly I’m just whimsy.
