Orange you glad we have Flavor of the Week?
submitted over 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is: ORANGE

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet, maintained by /u/apexified

Pressed for time, just some quick notes of my personal opinions.

  • FA Orange - Sharp orange with lots of peel. Easily turns into burnt zest at 1% and above. Butyric acid off note.
  • CAP Juicy Orange - Fresh and juicy, but weak and lacks body.
  • TFA Orange Cream - Decent, but rather mellow orange and leaning heavily towards the cream.
  • TFA Orange Mandarin - Much more flavorful than the cream, bright and has a good body. Nail polish off note.
  • FW Blood Orange - Fresh, bright, juicy and flavorful. Very authentic.
  • INW Shisha Orange - A step above FW Blood Orange, very similar, not as sharp, closer to a regular orange.
  • MB Juicy Orange - Darker, almost over ripe, but fairly accurate orange juice. Kinda weak.

Thank you for this. Do you not also get murderous throat hit from CAP Juicy Orange?

by leapinglabratsover 7 years ago

Not at all, but then, TFA Juicy Peach is one of my favorites ;) I have to go overboard with lemon/lime to get that kind of sharpness from fruits.

Does anybody else have trouble with FW Blood Orange separating? The orange oil always separated and even was somehow finding its way out of the bottle, shit was a mess after a while. I had to throw it out.

2 points

by leapinglabratsover 7 years ago

I get an oily layer floating to the top, that's normal. It's a lot more common than you think, you just don't see it this clearly. Always shake your concentrates a bit before use.

I've never had a bottle leak in the fashion you describe though.

I recently ordered TFA Dreamsicle. Had TFA Orange Creamsicle as my first ever order 3 years back. Mixed at 7% and did a 1 drop tongue test.... Furniture polish!

Perhaps it's redone or something? Cut it by 100% volume with VG and let steep a week. Still quite overwhelming.

No - FA Mandarin (Tanger)?! I feel that this should find a place in the orange world as well. Its part of the orange family. FA is pretty sweet and juicy, no real noticeable zest/rind. It's probably one of my favorite oranges to use. I espeically like to pair it with .25% FA - Orange to add that hint of zest and make a more authentic orange flavor to my taste.

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Yes of course FA Mandarin (Tanger). All the mandarins. All the tangerines. Hell, even the bergamots. IT'S ORANGE WEEK MUDDAFUCKERS!

This makes me want to revisit my Amaretto Orange attempt. The recipe was:

  • Shisha Orange (INW) 0.5%
  • Mandarin (FA) 3%
  • Amaretto (FM) 2%

I left it alone for a few days and it smelled amazing and crazy authentic. Unfortunately it tasted like burnt tires. Maybe too much FM Amaretto. Just throwing this out there.

1 points

by KillScreen-over 7 years ago

Did you solo tested FM amaretto? I only have FW Almond Amaretto, it pairs really well with TPA orange cream. It gives it a cristalized orange peal taste to it, ending up tasting like marzipan.

2 points

by JohnLaCuentaover 7 years ago

Interesting, I might have to give that one a shot.

I tested FM Amaretto at 8% like they suggest and almost threw up lol. It's just foul at that percentage and that's how I know the burnt tire taste comes from it. Their pistachio is the same at 8% but I like it at 2% so I tried Amaretto at the same concentration... Still too high for that one it looks like.

2 points

by KillScreen-over 7 years ago

But those %'s seem right for their gins. I also tried their green apple (best green apple in the market IMO) and 3% is enough. Apparently only their gins are diluted.

We're on a roll with all the citrus fruits lately, nice!

  • FA Orange - Seconding /u/leapinglabrats on this. Lots of peel, didn't like it in 'Sicle
  • TFA Orange Cream - Seconding /u/leapinglabrats again, creamy, weak orange, but no peel at least
  • FA Tanger - More orange than tangerine, chalky (little like what EM tastes to me) and slightly lemony
  • FA Blood Orange - Sweet, orangy, no off-flavors for me. /u/concreteriver recommends this as an orange flavor and I agree.
  • FA Royal Orange Juice - If I'd try 'Sicle again, I'd sub FA Orange with this one. Waxy as /u/concreteriver describes, although I swear I get a vanilla/vanilla swirl off-note there.
  • CAP Sweet Tangerine - Way too sweet for me, very weak orange. Single Flavor tested this up until 8% to get some tangerine taste from it. Could work to sweeten up an orange recipe.
3 points

by St1llFrankover 7 years ago

I agree about FA Royal Orange. I get a creamy vanilla taste on the exhale. I disagree (somewhat) on the CAP Sweet Tangerine. It is sweet for me. But I get a great tasting sweet orange flavor from it. I like it better than all of Flavourarts orange flavor because it has a fluffy texture and isn't dry. I get dryness from FA's orange/citrus flavors.

I use it at 6% with some pineapple/cream/vanilla. It goes really well with Purilum Golden Pineapple.

Most Orange flavors tend to make my lungs hurt, why is that?

2 points

by Baphometover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

This happens to me too -- I've found just 3%, post steep, of Hypnotic Mist smacks me pretty hard. Fresh/SNV it doesn't bother me, as much. I keep coming back to various blends of orange and cream with twice the amount, or more, of orange(s) in them as the aforementioned HM mix and find it less aggressive in pain response. Cream, I think, might be something to try, if you're into that sort of thing...

1 points

How do other citrus flavors treat you?

3 points

by n0tveganover 7 years ago

I love lemon, lime and tangerine flavors and i can vape them without any problems.

But orange, blood orange, sweet orange all make my lungs hurt really bad, feels like they are damaging something in there everytime so I just stopped vaping them.

2 points

by KhaosHakomairosover 7 years ago

I had the same response to a juice I found similar to element fresh squeeze. I'm inclined to believe I'm in the same boat but I never had an issue with the element stuff. I'll be trying the clone I found on elr as soon as I get my shipment in

There’s a flavor review for it, I think. Did your experience match the review?

3 points

by St1llFrankover 7 years ago

Yeah /r/ConcreteRiver does a good job reviewing it. I had to look it up. Its a pleasant orange flavor with something green going on. He uses the word zest. Thats it, a bit of lime maybe.

1 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

'zest' in this context refers to essentially grating the peel. Used in cooking/preparing drinks to add the essential oils of the fruit, which imbues a lot of flavor.

3 points

by N3moHoesover 7 years ago

I just checked my flavour stash on elr and I'd forgotten I had FW Blood Orange and Sweet Tangerine. Then I realised I've never even had an Orange vape in 9 years of vaping. Any suggestions what I could throw one or both of these into as I'm mainly vaping fruits atm anyways. I have over 250 other flavours in my stash so I'm pretty sure I can make something useable.

I'm loving the FW Almond Amaretto + TPA Orange cream combo. I hate bitter almond flavor, but this combo is really exquisite. S&V tastes like a nice and rich marzipan flavor.

3 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

One odd combination of flavors that works really well together - FA Bergamot and INW Marzipan. After discovering that I looked around some... someone into bakery flavors may be interested in hitting that with JF Yellow Cake or a pound cake flavor or something, try making a Stöellen juice.

I love when you hit on combos like that, that shouldn't really work but do work, exceptionally well.

Woo excited for this one. I only have juicy orange but I can't make it work. It's super harsh

3 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Yeah, that one's unfortunate. It's tempting to use because it tastes like orange juice, but it's most prominent characteristic is throat rape.

2 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Would just about maxing out EM in a recipe with Juicy Orange work to make it more like 'throat indecent exposure' than throat rape?

2 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Creams seems to work much better than EM with Juicy Orange but then you're stuck with a creamy orange which might not be what you're after.

2 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Probably best to use it in a supporting role, then, rounding out other oranges, much like FA Bergamot would. (Although both would provide different parts of the orange.)

2 points

by EnrusTHEunicorNover 7 years ago

Every orange I've vaped tasted like soap. I love orange slices, orange kool-aid, I'd maybe try creme cicle if it wasn't over powering. I just don't know where to find any. Any suggestions?

3 points

by drifterinthadarkover 7 years ago

TPA's Orange cream isn't overpowering at all, but the orange is definitely there. I was actually looking to add some extra orange because of how much I love orange. If what you want is something not overpowering, it's not bad at all, even mixed with some extra cream flavors.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Which ones have you tried? That makes it easier to suggest something, like, "If you didn't enjoy X, you probably won't like Y either, but Z vapes very differently, so you might want to check out Z."

by drifterinthadarkover 7 years ago

I have Orange (FA), Sweet Tangerine (CAP), and Orange Cream (TPA). I've only used the orange cream so far which is nice but needs extra fruit or extra cream added to it, the other two are still in shipping, so I'll try the orange cream with some extra orange once I receive them. Hoping to eventually find some good orange recipes because it is by far my favorite fruit/candy/sweet flavor in terms of food or drinks.

3 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Detox by /u/philosaphucker isn't an orange recipe, but it's a delicious use of TFA Orange Cream after a healthy steep. In a Godda Da Vida by /u/mlnikon also isn't an orange or tangerine recipe really, but it's probably the best use of CAP Sweet Tangerine that ever was or will be.

Loveless Orange Milk uses oranges you don't have, but it looks like a good orange recipe you might want to try. /u/matthewkocanda has several orange recipes you might want to take a look at, actually. And then there's Vurve's famous Dreamsicile. Or if you're into tropical cocktail vapes, Jamican Me Cray Cray.

If you post your all your flavors in the weekly what can I make thread, you might get a suggestion or two for a good orange vape that uses only what you already have.

I have:

Was on a quest to make an orange juice, or orange juice grenadine mocktail, but would be happy with orange drink

1 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Have you tried the WF OJ just all by itself at around 4%? Or Royal Orange 2%? Or mixing them together at about 3% WF OJ + 1.5% FA Royal?

2 points

by Ben-Vapingover 7 years ago

I’ve only single tested the wf Orange Juice, which I was quite impressed with, but felt it was lacking. So my natural next step was to randomly throw all the oranges together, and sure enough, it sucked, as I think FA orange threw it off. I will try doing the wf oj and royal orange, as per your suggestion.

Thank you very much!!!

That’s Sucralose and it does have it, but it doesn’t seem to be as filthy with it as some of the others. If you don’t like Sucralose at all, even a little bit, don’t buy it.

I mixed Chrisdvr1's orange vanilla sherbet and damn is it tasty. But its also really harsh. The orange seems too strong. Know how I can mellow it out? Perhaps subbing cap vbic with tpa vbic since I heard tpa is richer than cap version?

I've never tried FW Orange Dream bar but that has to be where the harshness is coming from, unless you're sensitive to Apricot. Have you had other recipes with TFA Apricot up that high and no problems with it?

I wish I had more to add, but I got both MF Orange and MF Mandarin a while back, but haven't had a chance to make up on recipes. I will say that they're both very realistic, very strong, and heavy on the citric acid. I'd use both at 1% or less.

I've been kind of tossing them in to orders from ECX. From what I can see I think ECX is phasing them out, though, since I've noticed a lot of flavors disappear. Everything I've tried has been really realistic, but it's hard to justify those prices. They also tend to have a lot of throat hit.

by ARflipgurlover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

I have two that I haven’t used much yet. Did single flavor tests of FW Tangerine at 4% and FA Orange at 3% and liked them both, although FA seemed very one-dimensional to me.

However, both of them seemed to fade out quickly for me. With a few days steep they tasted good but roughly 8-10 days out both seemed rather weak. Has anyone else experienced that? Is it common for orange flavors to fade?

I did like the weird combo I tossed together of 2.5% FLV Native and 3% FA Orange (called it Hazy Sunrise) and oddly enough, the orange seemed to stick around better when mixed. Probably odd to put orange in a tobacco but I dig fruity tobaccos.

As odd as this may sounds for orange juices I normally use a combo of FW Blood Orange, RFSC mango and/or pineapple, and depending what kind of juice CAP sweet tangerine or CAP juicy orange or even TFA Orange Cream. A combo of those flavors normally gets rid of the harshness of normal orange flavors for me at least.

I've found tpa blackberry tastes pretty close to ribena @ about 3% maybe with some tweaks you could get it closer

Is there any orange in any of those Ribena flavors? Your question might be off topic...

Ribena is more a black currant based flavor, as far as I remember...

Good luck finding a Blackcurrant that'll work for a Ribena. I've read lots of reviews on VV Blackcurrant which should get you close or even DH Blackcurrant Candy might work. For starters stay well away from INW Blackcurrant for this profile or for any Blackcurrant flavour that we relate Blackcurrant too here in the UK because it's just not even close. The Orange, Blueberry and Strawberry components I can't advise on at all one way or the other apart from FA Bilberry (for the blueberry) definitely won't work.
