What's with the milk/cream obsession in recipes?
submitted over 7 years ago by SirDoctorPhil

It seems like 8 out of 10 recipes involve some sort of milk or cream flavor. Is there any reason for this, or do these flavors just have a tendency to work well with others?

We all love the taste of vomit/butyric acid, duh.

I actuality, heavier creamier flavors tend to mesh lighter fruitier flavors really well. Without the cream, it might be too harsh or tight.

BTW, noticed your site has been down for a while. Have you checked out http://theflavorwiki.net/ Similar project that I couldn't find a consistent userbase to add to it, but I might have been going about the project wrong.

Is that supposed to be bolded or a hashtag?

That speaks more on the quality of the fruit flavors used in the recipe to be honest. A good fruit flavor should stand on its own first and foremost.

A good fruit flavor isn't intended to stand on its own, typically. Remember the most popular flavorings aren't intended for vaping -- and only in the past 2 years have more concentrate makers focused on the vape market and released flavors better suited for vaping.

But those concentrate makers sell more to complex juice makers than DIY (no matter what they say) -- and complex juice makers want flavors that need other components to shine. Nobody wants concentrates that work just fine on their own; except for DIYers.

When I went Keto I would drink just heavy cream. Delicious.

Mix that up with diet Root Beer, killer keto treat. Had those all the time when I did keto. Mix 3/4 root beer and 1/4 heavy cream.

Lolol it's the best. I should try this keto thing

I am with /u/RinVapes on this one: I often use creams in not-creamy recipes to smooth edges and add moisture. If you try to make a cookie, cake, donut, muffin, etc. and don't add some sort of cream to it, it's going to be dry af. They basically stand in for how you would add milks and or fats to a cooking recipe. I dare you to try to make a cake with just flour and sugar lol

That's not to say I don't enjoy creamy vapes. But even if I didn't enjoy straight custards and creams, I would still be using some sort of creamy flavoring in 8/10 recipes.

This is where you might use concentrates that act more as additives to bring juiciness instead of adding cream. INW Cactus @ 0.25%, FA Pear @ 0.5% to keep their flavor profile low. There are a few others you can use that I can't think of off the top of my head.

I agree absolutely when you are working with fruit profiles. Not so much for bakeries though. Either approach could probably work with florals depending on the overall profile and the specific florals used.

I believe cucumber. Some coconuts. Maybe even taro, depending on what you're trying to mix.

Cream/milk is good. Lol. I used whipped cream a lot to smooth a recipe out... At a low percentage you won't even taste cream... it just gives body and what not.

Because who really wants strawberry tobacco to be their ADV?

/u/chemicalburnvictim is the first name that comes to mind. Unless he has the same dislike of strawberries I have.

I’ve done a Strawberry Tobacco, but it had some cream because I was shooting for a blondie. Mostly I just liked the name Strawberry Blondie. Didn’t turn out the greatest.

I'm not shocked.

My ADV is basically strawberry and tobacco, but REALLY low on strawberry.

This whole menthol thing annoys me more- Mums milk guy

I love menthol tbh. But mint? Fuck no. Add some blueberry with it? I'll lose my appetite.

2 points

by cryzzgranthamover 7 years ago

Haha as we all know this game is primarily personal preference. It just sucks when I see awesome juices but they carry mint/ menthol. I appreciate menthol but I feel like it should be “yeah this juice recipe is this..... also works with really well with menthol/ cream” ya feel me? Give me good recipes then tell me if cream/ menthol works with it

1 points

by BadInfluenceAFover 7 years ago

Oh I would pretty much hate any fruity juice WITH menthol. I just like a menthol juice without any other flavor.

0 points

by juthincover 7 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Menthol IS mint. It's also a cooling agent, but the only common minty cooling agent is menthol, and no cooling agent that isn't minty is menthol. Really, the only cooling agent that is menthol is menthol.

That said, a blueberry cotton candy can take actual menthol in small doses, and work pretty well. But for the most part fruits work great with cooling, not so great with menthol.

1 points

by torma616over 7 years ago

Menthol is specifically the cooling agent though, while mint is the cooling agent with other flavors/oils that give it a specific mint flavor.

They go well with a lot just like in food recipes. Not for their flavour but the way they can both soften and enhance other flavours when used in the right proportions.

Cream is like 1 leg of the table of flavor concentrates. Strawberry and milk was the #1 for a long time, and probably still it.

by iNdiSskYs131over 7 years ago

I guess it is simply because people like milk and cream flavors. That seems sort of obvious to me. But, yes many mixes use cream or dairy to blend or soften other flavors. Also, many mixes have cream in them and you would never know it if someone didn't tell you the recipe.

I'm guilty of adding creamy goodness to alot of the stuff I whip up. :)

This is the reason I stick with fruit only liquid these days. I like bakery flavors but everyone has to throw some kind of milk/cream in them anymore and that flavor makes me gag.

I somehow understand why creams are everywhere...but why must they all be vanilla creams? I really really don't like vanilla. The taste is too close to butyric acid for me, vanilla and vomit almost taste the same.

Yes! I KNEW there had to be others out there that hate vanilla.

No, that was the year before. Last year was mango. (Although there was still too much strawberry.)

I don't get it either. Personally, the milky or creamy taste is not my thing. In some stores, it is 80% of the offering.

I can't taste "cream" flavors 😣 So I stick with Fruits and TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream...

by probywan1337over 7 years agoI will rip you a new one if you don't use the sidebar & search.

Tfa vbic. Ugh I've tried years to like it, but all I get is a nasty harshness. Some people say peppery, and I'd agree

Have you tried other VBIC? Such as Capella's?

Or ice bean gelato for that matter. I subbed it a lot in my first mixes and it's not harsh!

If you are not a fan of creams try diyordie's POG remix, fantastic by daz Cole and in a godda Vida (spelling?) by ml ikon. All three delicious and without cream.

ELR - What can I make? 99 creams and an original aint one. Alltheflavours.com seems to have a better spread, though flavours are frequently beyond the conventional spread of brands.
