How do I make flavours "pop"?
submitted over 7 years ago by Gqi

Hey everyone!

I'm working on a personal recipe, it's a black cherry and watermelon flavour. Alot of people have tried it and said it's good they noticed it lacks a little flavour.

I've tried doing both MAX VG and 70/30 blends, I've tried added CAP Super Sweet and even TPA Gummy Candy to give it a more unique flavour but I still don't find the flavour hitting you in the fact like I hoped.

I was wondering if there's anything I could add to make the flavour "juicier". I haven't tried Cactus but I was tempted to mix the recipe up with Cactus tonight. Any other tips?

Second this. Works better than cactus if you're not trying to change the flavor too much. Keep it low, maybe 0.5%

If you try the cactus keep it low. It messes with the flavour.

Agreed, even at very low percentages all I can taste is aloe vera. I don't get the hype to be honest but I'm admittedly still pretty green so I could be using it all wrong

It shines with fruity and sweet flavors, I wouldn't use it with creamy/pastry stuff at all.

I've seen people claim or even reccomend INW Cactus to add wetness or juiciness to dry fruit flavors. Anything I add it to, adds that aloe flavor you mentioned. I know to keep it low and can still taste it.

Yep even at a couple drops per 60ml all I taste is aloe. Maybe we are hyper-sensitive to it. Who knows

I completely agree about INW Cactus.

Try another watermelon and another black cherry flavor alongside it. Oh and marshmallow :)

Well the current blend actually uses Black Cherry and Cherry (both TPA) and I have Watermelon (Clear) + Flavorah Watermelon. I'll try a bit of marshmellow but I don't really want too much of a creamy vibe from this.

Marshmallow is the opposite of creamy, it gives things body and fluffs them out. I would also try dragonfruit if you haven't yet, maybe at around 1% of each.

What's a good marshmallow and around what percentage would you throw it in for that very reason?

Small amounts of creams can give more of an "assist" than adding creaminess. Other things I add to fruit recipes, in small amounts (1% or less), to lend "pop" are INW Cactus, FE Lemon, FA Fuji Apple, Ethyl Maltol, and INW Grapes. Kiwi also works well with Watermelon.

well PG is the flavor carrier. so add more PG. when I first started I thought VG was better so I did 80/20 VG/PG and it was horrible. then I did 60/40 and it improved a hundred times in flavor. also look into steeping. I havnt done it yet because I'm impatient and lazy lol but you could give it a try

Try some Harvest Berry.

A drop of citric acid? Higher % of each flavour?

If you have some lemon, try adding a touch of that. Not too much though. Use the ones that don't have that "leafy/rind" like flavour (that could throw your entire profile out of whack.)

I've found that tpa key lime adds a little pop for me.

Break the boundaries of flavor percentages, increase the % of one of the other, depending on how much you want in that department. I'd start with small ml batches, or do a small few 5ml with x%, next one 2% and etc. It's really a matter of testing your flavors at different %'s.

A little strawberry 1% or so. Some Fuji or some lemon sicily.

You using LA watermelon clear? If so, check this recipe and mix it up. Here perfect example of a juicy watermelon. Cactus at a low % is pretty much the best option imo. Dragonfruit could also help bring out the top fruity notes of the watermelon and cherry. FA pear also helps for adding some juiciness.

0,5% dragonfruit tpa + 0,25% cactus inw to make the recipe juicier, if you want a candy like effect 0,5% flv candy roll could be a good idea

Maybe .1% FA Lime Tahity or FA Lemon Sicily. And .25% Xylitol.

Second lime Tahiti and lemon Sicily. But I’m a sucker for lime.

I have a half a percent of cactus and a half percent of pear. Going to add half a percent of cucumber in the next batch. I stay away from the citrus, doesn't agree with my palate.

I like a little vanilla in my fruit/berry mixes.

Maybe changing your setup, we all know that some builds are better for flavor, play with the airflow and be mindful of vaper's tongue.

I have a personal favourite: strawberry, mango; sometimes I add vanilla, vanillin, vbg, vbic, or change brands, add marshmallow or cotton candy, sometimes lemon or citric acid, keep playing with it until you find the one, but my recommendation is, enjoy the ride!

Tfa ripe strawberry at 2 percent or so. Great flavor carrier and unless you run it high, it blends away and just boosts the other flavors. If not that then I would try double watermelon, similar effect but fits your profile better.

Which Watermelon and Cherry flavors are you using?

Definitely try a bit of Cactus but keep it low, like 0.2-0.5%. If the Cactus doesn't do the job or degrades the taste, try FA Pear at 0.5%.

I like using FA Aurora for a zest accent, and it may work for you here at 0.2% or slightly more. An alternative would be FA Lime Tahiti (distilled) at a slightly higher percentage.

I usually add a little vanilla swirl around %0.5 or try something sour like lime?

Try some cooling agents. You might normally consume a fruit pie or cobbler warm, but otherwise most people prefer cold fruit.

Think about how food does it, for my uninformed opinion. Contrasting flavors is a really good way to add depth and highlight. Maybe a touch of salted caramel for a sweet note? If you’re willing to get crazy, a rich cream, or a ‘joke’ flavor if you have those.

Again, my suggestions should be taken as uninformed, and are background ideas.

What's a joke flavour?

Hot dog, pizza, cheese, pepper, pickles, anything that you’d think, ‘WTF?’ About. Tiny tiny bits, like, a drop a bottle.

So you buy those type of flavors? gahhhhhhhck
