I have been DIYing for more than a year but I haven't stopped buying commercial eliquid, and every now and then I vape a juice and instantly recognise a specific flavor in it. I'm not guessing or estimating the flavor from the description, I'm almost sure it's a specific flavor I've used in mixes or vaped solo.
What if we had a thread were we could just share flavors that we spot in juices? Others might be trying to remix them, others might get a new idea/perspective for one of their own recipes.
And I don't mean spotting TPA Strawberry Ripe on a strawberry mix your local vapeshop sells to you and a few other customers, I mean commercial juices that are known at least in an entire country.
This is just an idea and sorry if the mods think it fits in the clone thread, i just feel it would be of wider usage especially for ideas, because lots of DIYers can recognise flavors but not all of them wish to replicate an entire mix...
I don't think this post or your hypothetical "flavor spotting" thread belongs in the clone request thread. And if there's enough interest in doing it, I don't have any issues with it. Because reddit automatically archives after six months and you can no longer add comment, someone would have to post another one every six months and it would really be more useful if that same someone copied over the information from the comments in the previous thread. It could probably even have a home in the top bar next to the monthly clone challenge. But I'm afraid that it will suffer the same lack of activity that the monthly clone challenge does, for the same reason: People who DIY just aren't buying that much commercial eliquid.
To be fair, as a New mixer, I still buy on occasion for ideas and for relief of my mishaps I force myself to vape. :)
Wish I could mix with more confidence or experience. Sometimes vaping commercial juice is good for me to see balances of flavors (or lack thereof). And sometimes rewarding in ways that picking up a concentrate and botching a recipe isn’t. I’d say lots of newbies like myself read more than post here. I feel gangly participating sometimes.
> I feel gangly participating sometimes
We all did at first
Would you be able to contribute to a thread like the one /u/kotsosss has suggested?
I don’t know if it would be a very fruitful discussion but it is kind of fun when it happens. I do wonder what happened to the new mixers thread. I remember seeing that when I first subscribed and I keep waiting for it to come back. Did I just imagine that? Sometimes I’d like to see more discussion and connection happen here like in other communities.
I feel like diy is a very strong independent and thinkers way of approaching the hobby. I’d definitely like to have a place to put my thoughts as a new mixer and get feedback beyond what can I do with these flavors. I’d like to be able to talk about whatever and learn from the experience of others. Wizened or just wet behind the ears.
Does that make sense? I’m pretty beat right now.
Now that I’ve thought about it, it seems like this would be an appropriate response to a clone request thread in some ways. Or even an offshoot of the flavor of the week. As in for the former, what do you taste in the juice being cloned? Like a juice of the week and people put in their two cents. But then most diy ers with the know how don’t taste the commercial juices so there’s the disconnect. I already see folks chiming in on some requests where they’d start trying to clone something and offering good ideas to begin testing. DIY is such an interesting process and it takes loads of time. There’s no quick fix like: ‘my smok broke, suggestions for a new kit’ posts on ecr.
Edit: as for flavor of the week, it might be nice if folks anecdotally added juice names where they could taste a flavor or brand to give newbies a frame of reference. I still vape juice commercially to see how that balance works. I like apothecary bec they post their concentrates so I can see what’s happening. Some of the ‘great’ ATF recipes simply require flavors I don’t have. So I am subbing but I know they’re not exactly what was intended.
When I first started mixing, I bought a few commercial juices both for inspiration and to have juice on hand in case I needed to wait out steeping. Luckily, most of my recipes don't require steeping, beyond a day or two. As I get into tobaccos that will change. And I expect as I start adding creams to hot chocolates and such it will also slow things down. Oddly enough, I had a strange experience wit one mix tasting almost identical to one of the commercial juices... I was trying to make something vaguely similar, only also trying to change it somewhat.. instead I think I accidentally cloned it. Even if I doubt it was exactly the same recipe...
I do wonder, tho... pretty much everything I've mixed (except for a coffee I thought I grabbed the diluted cinnamon, but accidentally used pure TFA Death by Cinnamon for) has been at least ok... how are people ending up producing unvapeable crap, is it just a case of not doing enough research up front?

I haven't bought a commercial juice in over 2 years. BTW - really feeling your Strap-On.
Awesome! You should try some of the many variations on that. They're all better than the original.
Yeah I've tried 8 commercial juices in the past three years and only paid for two of those.
These are obviously not 100% just my thoughts.
Blue dot uses FA Fuji, TPA Coconut Extra, and FA Fresh Cream in Dragons tongue. TPA Orange Cream, CAP Juicy Orange in Mars. If someone knows the melon in Mountain Top I'd love you.
BX uses TPA Honeysuckle and CAP cucumber in honey suckle my cuke. Acai melon is using FLV Acai.
Bigglesworth uses FA Almond and Vienna Cream in Amalfi. Pretty sure they use TPA Peanut butter for prairie.
Oasis uses FA walnut and FW Butterscotch Ripple in Hyrule.
Nana Cream from Bombies has LA Banana Cream
Roll up Strawberry is Strawberry Ripe+Strawberry combo from TPA.
Yeah Prairie is all TPA. Link
Why TY stranger.
No problem! It does take at least a month steep to get where it needs to be. In his development notes he talked about using a heated magnet stirrer, and I'm almost certain he still uses it. The difference is that with mine, it takes a month for the (I think) alcohols to evaporate and the bananas to mellow out. His is ready to go out of the mail. He also posted photos of before and after heated mixing, the heated batch is noticeably darker than unheated. Mine is just a couple shades lighter than Prairie. So I'm thinking the heated stirring cooks off some of those alcohols, not sure how it makes it darker though. I have some that's two months old and it's still lighter than his. But it is 100% Prairie otherwise.
From the Indigo tobaccos that I have tried and remember, they seem to be using FE tobaccos. FE Hongtashan in The Duke, FE Captain in Kick Back, and FE Black Mile Plus in Oorah.
Haven’t really had a whole lot of other commercial juices.
LOVE this idea, its almost like opensource clone ~~recipes~~ ingredients haha. I bet with enough people "flavor spotting" we might get a few full recipe ingredient lists out of it. Damn, i hope this picks up support, really interesting idea. Will also help noobies when buying flavors, can find few flavors their favorite juice most likely contains, and pick those concentrates up.

Premium Labs - Dragon Tears: I am almost certain this one contains TFA Dragonfruit. Its kinda obvious given how old this juice is, and its name...
-
Public Bru - Graham Mother: as far as i can tell, this juice seems to have FA Pear in it. Im also pretty sure it has TFA Coconut Candy
