Xylitol as sweetner
submitted over 7 years ago by Phatpharm269

Hi all! First post to this sub.

Curious how many people use xylitol as a DIY sweetener? I heat PG and saturate with crystals. Then shake and use 5-15ml for a 240ml batch.

I truly hate sucralose or most fake sugars. Xylitol is popular for gum etc, but has major issues in the digestive system. Good thing vapin' doesn't end up there!

Short warning ⚠ seems dogs are affected even more with digestion of xylitol.

Cheers

Edit: going to work on making some PG-based saline solution. Don't like adding water to my juice. Weird popping occurs.

Helps smoothness and boosts some flavs

I'd say as long as it's pure xylitol and not branded sweetener then shouldn't be a HUGE issue. As most artificial sweeteners are sugar alcohols ie. (ethyl maltol)

Agreed. Just a sugar alcohol.

It is a quite stable molecular structure.

I would be worried about the effects on lung tissue, as I believe it hasn't been tested

Guess I'm the lab rat then. Been using it for 2.5 years and made quite a few mixes for friends. Haven't had any issues other than great lungs from ditching smoking :p

Well, that sounds promising. Do you ever have a lingering cough? Been diagnosed with any diseases (even if they seem irrelevant) since then?

No diseases and PG is a great antimicrobial. Haven't had bronchitis or tonsillitis since quitting smoking.

Any coughing fits are from herb or a flooded tank running too cool.

There has been a study on its effect on the mucus lining and it was extremely positive, as in zero effect. Tobacco smoking destroys the lining in the lungs.

It is being considered for use in inhalers to treat cystic fibrosis symptoms as well.

When I had bronchitis, I had to breathe through this thing which I still have laying around somewhere, and I'm pretty sure it used PG as the delivery system. It'd be sweet if I could actually use it as a vape station.

It's actually pretty well researched, I just don't have a link off hand. Pretty darn safe.

Xylitol will recrystallize in pg. Dissolve in VG instead.

I have noticed this, although I thought it was due to supersaturation in warm solvent.

Yeah xylitol and erythritol play much nicer with VG.

Think it might take "Vooping" to a whole new level...

Xylitol, just like erythritol is a sugar alcohol. You what else we use in vaping that's a sugar alcohol? VG!!! This means they're all relatively equally hazardous. This also means that they have approximately the same level of sweetness. Using erythritol or xylitol in e-juice as a sweetener is pointless as they're not any sweeter than pure VG.

VG is only 0.4 on the index according to sources. Xylitol is far lower than sucralose tho, but higher than VG

Index of what? :D

As I said they're all sugar alcohols and about the same order of magnitude of sweetness. Meaning if you were to compare relative sweetness, VG, Xylitol, Erythritol fall in the range between 0 and 1. Sucralose on the other hand is somewhere close to 400 or 500.

So 1 drop of sucralose is at least 400 times sweeter than 1 drop any of these.

Xylitol is 2.3x sweeter than VG, but yes it's much smaller margin than synthetic sugars which I refuse to use.

Edit: I do have a half pound of stevia leaf though, may work on a PG extraction and test it out.
