OK mixers, this is your thread to ask any questions you want of the DIY eJuice community. All posts are allowed, but we still encourage you to use the sidebar and search features before asking any questions.
- Placing your first DIY order and want to make sure you have all you need?
- Not sure about how to mix your first bottle?
- Want to get started but aren't sure how?
- Any other questions? ... then this is the thread for you. FWIW, the answers to the first three questions will eventually be found in the wiki (still in development); link at the top of the page.
Ask away!
Here is a somewhat hypothetical question I want to ask you guys/gals:
If you had an opportunity to sit down and have a one on one lesson, with a top mixer in diy, what questions would you be sure to ask?
How did you get so handsome?
Are you genetically predisposed to be better than the rest of us in literally every way?
Everybody loves you.(Not a question, but it would need to be said.)
What's it like to have someone idolize you so much that they shave their head and start acting like you, such as /u/ID10-T?
Now that world peace has been achieved through mutual adoration of God Milk, what flavor profile are you going to win next?
But I can ask myself these questions anytime I want, so it's kind of a moot point now.
I'd make sure to have tried a handful of their recipes and ask specific questions about the development of those recipes. I think I could learn more from hearing very specifically about the version history of awesome recipes than anything else a "top mixer in diy" would have to say.
Quote marks because I'm not sure such a thing exists. Some are just more vocal/active/too much free time/better at hyping stuff than others. Although, experience definitely counts for something. I want to learn from people who have more experience than I do. But that doesn't mean they have to have a "name" in mixing. Even if they have less overall experience, they might have more experience with a specific flavor/profile/brand/technique. They've mixed A and B together to make C and I haven't. But at the end of the day, everyone should be his or her own "top mixer in diy."
I would ask /u/prettymatthew about the secrets in Tripoli. I’ve been on a quest since /u/ID10-T sent me a little to try, and I’m missing a thing or two. Then maybe just chat about tobaccos and fun combos I never thought to try.
That is a very real possibility here in this very thread. Since topics like how to get started are covered in the sidebar, I would ask about things like "where do these amazing recipe ideas come from?" And "how do you find the time and energy to review basically one Flavor every day and still pay the rent?"
It depends on the mixer in question. The top two choices, one I would take a couple samples with me, and see if the tobacco in one could be identified... and ask for suggestions to improve a couple mixes. The other, I'd ask "why do you like mango so much?" And "did you really shave your head?"
So I have been lurking here for a while and I've finally got my flavors right where I want them. However, while It tastes good, it still feels like the juice is "dry"? Almost like the juice is causing dry hits. Does anyone have any tricks to help make it more "juicy" or to really make those flavours pop? Thanks in advance
A little more info- the flavour I mixed up was a Guava Lime Candy I found over on ELR. It had very good reviews too so I'm a little confused as to why its dry. The flavors are spot on, they just don't seem as strong as they should be and again, almost provided a "dry hit" out of my cleito 120.
I have had the same problem with my mixes, and finally found something that helps. I add a touch of CAP Super Sweet at a low percentage (.2-.3%), and it works wonders. I had almost given up on DIY because I couldn’t figure out why all my mixes were so dry. If trying different nicotine doesn’t help, maybe this will.
Well you gave me some hope that you found a solution. It really does make the juice almost unvapeable. Is the CAP super sweet a sweetener like sucralose or is it an actual flavour? Thank you for your help.
I had this problem when I started and it drove me crazy. Different nic solved the problem.
I feel your pain buddy, it's driving me nuts now. Lol. Could I ask what nic you switched to that solved this issue?
Chemnovatic from the EU. I get it from Vaperstek
What VG PG ratio and nic level are you using?
Lots of good suggestions here, but I'm wondering if you've tried other devices? Seems like the greatest common factor in all your mixes is the cleito 120. Could be something going on there. I remember getting multiple coil packs on the cleito gen 1 that were wicked way too tight and every other hit was dry and tasteless.
Try either adding a small amout of INW Cactus, and/or a bit of xylitol.
I'll post this here, posted it 30 mins ago in the old thread so probably won't get seen.
I've come across a recipe I want to try making but I don't have the Vanilla Custard:
- Banana Cream LA 4%
- Bavarian Cream TPA 1.5%
- Cheesecake (Graham Crust) TPA 3%
- Strawberry (Ripe) TPA 7%
- Vanilla Custard (V1) CAP 2.5%
I was thinking of trying one of two things, just leaving the custard out or replacing it with VBIC. I have heard that Strawberry (Ripe) doesn't go well with VBIC though.
So which would be better to do, leave out or replace? What kind of percentage should VBIC be used in place of the custard?
That recipe would be just fine as:
TFA cheesecake Graham crust 3%
TFA bavarian cream 1.5%
LA banana cream 1.5%
Tfa Strawberry Ripe 2%
That's interesting, why such a big drop in the banana and strawberry?
My experience with those Flavors leads me to believe that those amounts would work the best in this recipe. Strw ripe gives you pretty good results at 1-4% depending on what you want out of it (you could tweak that within that range depending on the first batch) I usually start low and move up if need be. And la banana cream is disgusting over 2% in my opinion. I find 1.5% to be the sweet spot.
My recipes tend to top out at 6-7% total Flavor in most cases.
Hijacking so people may see this- Are there any DIY companies in the United States that accept bitcoin? Thanks!
Any other fans of FA Black Fire? I love this flavor at 5 drops per 10ml with 3% each of INW Two Apples and FA Fuji. Tastes like apples and burning leaves in the fall...LOL!!
It has its uses, for sure.

Is anyone else thinking about grilled pickles now?
Edit: maybe with a clove-butter glaze?
I think it's disgusting. I can taste it at .25% and I can't stand it. The only mixes I've ever thrown away were ones with that in it. Those were well regarded recipes on ATF, not my own.
Uh... it you hate a flavor, what the fuck is wrong with you that you'd mix multiple recipes that use it? You'd never see me mixing up a strawberry mango vanilla custard, because I'd be a complete fucking idiot to mix something that would make me puke all over my scale. However, if I was to find, say, Perique Black disgusting, there's no way I'd try using it repeatedly. There's that quote attributed to Einstein about insanity that comes to mind. (And his comment on stupidity, for that matter.)
Einstein said insanity is doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. What I did is make a handful of recipes, then adjusted percentages hoping to get a result that was palatable. Are you saying if you made a mix with a % of a concentrate that turned out to be nasty you wouldn't adjust it and try again? Or just toss the concentrate in the trash. I don't think your Einstein reference really applies, good effort though.
Berry Blends? I have tried 3 of them....FA Forest Fruit (Peach note I didnt like) CAP Harvest Berry (Medicinal note that I didnt like) and finally FLV Berry Blend which was the best of the 3 to me. Any opinions on good mixed Berry flavours?
I've only tried the first two and like them both. Percentages and steep time can have a significant impact on the perceived flavor, as well as anything you'd combine them with.
I much prefer to make my own though, so I can tweak it to my liking and change things up on a whim. But that holds true for most combined flavor concentrates.
Hi
Want to try a Smurf recipe that needs (TPA)Sweet Cream 5% which I don't have, would (FA) Vienna Cream 3% make a good substitute.
I also have (FA)Cream Fresh,(TPA)Bavarian Cream
I haven't tried TFA Sweet Cream but according to the flavor review, it's cheesy and nutty and you won't get that from the ones you have. If you try 2% or so each of FA Fresh Cream and FA Vienna Cream and steep for a week, you'll get a dense sweet cream with slight dairy, egg and vanilla notes. TFA Bavarian Cream is much heavier on the vanilla, darker kind of. So not the same, but any time you substitute a flavor, the profile changes anyway. You'll have to be the judge if this description would fit what you're trying to make.
Ok thanks for the info. I will give it a try, and add sweet cream to my next order just in case.
What flavors go best with menthol? I was thinking blue berry?
Most fruits. This is a big personal preference kind of thing.
I wish chocolate didn't gunk up coils so bad, I use to get cool mint that tasted like the mint of a any's mint omg so gooood. I miss it.
I did a blueberry menthol cotton candy that was well received.
How to mellow out LA Lemonade? I find it too harsh in Vurve's Best Damn Lemonade. Looking to tweak it a bit, as I prefer smooth vapes. I mixed it in 70/30 with 1.5mg nic. I don't think the nic is the issue as the other custard I mixed during the same batch didn't have that sharp taste. He uses it at 6%. I reckon I can lower it but does anyone have a nice combination to keep the lemon up and about? I really like the flavor of LA Lemonade, but I feel it's just too harsh.
Did you use the 0.75% Lemon Sicily the recipe calls for? If so, try leaving that out next time. If that doesn't help, try adding 1% TFA Marshmallow or TFA Vanilla Swirl to it.
A hint of EM helps mellow out citruses as well.
The maltol in Strawberry Ripe makes Best Damn Pink Lemonade plenty mellow for me and doesn't seem to be working for /u/penatbater but you definitely have a point about the EM.
Hey Pat Bentar, try 1% TFA Cotton Candy before you potentially ruin your lemonade with vanilla swirl or marshmallow.
You can try LA Lemonade @4% and add maybe 1% FA Lemon Sicily and .5% INW Lemon Mix. Or try a blend of INW Lemon Mix and INW Lemon, supposedly. If you use the FA Lemon Pledge it needs a day or so steep time, before it's really vapeable. I need to get INW Lemon and JF Juicy lemon to test more possible lemonade bases...
Or you could just add a touch of TFA cotton candy to the lemonade. Take the edge off.
Why aren't my recipes as fluffy/full as what I'd get in store?
I usually run between 10-15% flavors with maltol up and above, 55/45 VG/PG. Using my recipes as ADV's to get a feel of how they steep. Taste is right but I just can't seem to get that... I dunno, quality, of premium/storebought juices.
Is it a certain sweetener, should I up or drop my flavors? What gives?
Without seeing the flavors and percentages you’re using, it’s hard to know how to help. Depending on the flavorings, you may be using way too much, or you may not. I can tell you that if you’re going over 1-1.5% with EM, that’s going to be a contributing factor in your flavor being muted, and it also has a bad habit of “flattening” mixes if used too high. What specific flavors are you using?
Edit: TPA Marshmallow at around 1% is good for helping mouth-feel in desserts, and INW Cactus at around .5% works wonders in fruity mixes.
Good point - Let's use this one for example: 5% sparkling wine, 3% grape juice, 1% apple, ton of maltol somewhere near 10%. Ice wine :D
Taste is close to what I want, but it needs that mouth-feel. I think I'll be trying the cactus, but the only cactus I've ever tasted is peyote and that is NOT a sweetener, so of course I glossed it over in my order lol
Yeah, that’s a LOT of EM! Personally, I would cut that down to .5-1%, and maybe, maybe add around .2% CAP Super Sweet. Try your recipe with the maltol reduced, give it a week or two steep, try it then. If it’s still not closer to what you want, add a drop or two of Super Sweet. Just reducing the EM should help leaps and bounds without needing any sweetener. Hope this helps!
Edit: Never tried peyote, but I can vouch for INW Cactus.
Good Afternoon,
So i found three different recipes that I think I would like. Some have the same ingredients. When buying flavor concentrations, should I buy 1oz or the 4oz? they are pretty common flavors ive been seeing including; ripe strawberry, sweet creme, cake batter:grahm crust..
I am also buying 1L of VG and 120mL of nic.
It’s usually best to buy the smallest size available when buying new flavors. If they have a 10ml size, I would get that just to be sure you’re going to like them. You never know, even the most popular flavors don’t appeal to everyone, and you may end up with a flavor that’s a total bust for you.
Don't forget VG.
Anyone got any help with butterscotches? Everything ive tried usually comes up without any flavor and just lame.
How would you use Kiwi double with the most common flavour? I'm looking for strawberry / Kiwi maybe with or without banana. And lastly my girlfriend loves black cherry tfa as standalone, she lives that "chimical, syrup" taste and I'm trying to get her to like other recipes, can you help?
Make her some 2% LA Cherry. Maybe throw some Cola and WS-23 into the mix, so it's a cool Rum&Cherry cola type. And for Kiwi, the best thing to add is Kentucky Bourbon and Toasted Marshmallow.
i continuously reduce level of nicotine in juices i mix and now i add 0.1ml of 100mg nicotine to 120ml juices. i think it's 0.08% of nicotine. is it homeopathy/placebo already or still not? if not - from what % it will be?
It's 0.008% or 0.08 mg/ml, I'd say it's probably placebo at this point. I went down to 0.5 mg/ml for a while and could sort of feel it vaguely, so maybe it's down to sensitivity, but at that point I wouldn't really have noticed if I forgot to add it at all.
Edit: Actually, why don't you test it. Make two batches, one with nic, one without, in identical containers and don't mark them up. If you can't tell which is which, there's your answer :)
What are some must have flavors that I don't already have? I'm getting tired of strawberry and blueberry, and I'm definitely ordering a lemon flavor.
FA Apple Pie, FA Cream Fresh, FA Meringue, INW Raspberry, CAP Vanilla Custard V1, FW Butterscotch Ripple, TFA Pistachio, CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl, FA Almond, TFA Banana Cream, FLV Butterscotch, FLV Cinnamon Crunch, FW Hazelnut, FA Joy, TFA Kentucky Bourbon, TFA Toasted Marshmallow, FA Kiwi, FLV Peanut Butter, FA Whisky, FLV Mango, TFA Honeysuckle, FLV Cream, TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream, INW Shisha Vanilla, FLV Connecticut Shade, FLV Cured Tobacco, FLV Kentucky Blend, FLV Virginia Tobacco, DIYFS Holy Holy Grail RY4, FLV Red Burley...
Everyone's answer to this is going to be different. The same person's list for you might different depending on when you ask. These are mine, today. They're everything you'd need to mix Coop's Raspberry Custard and Kiwi Bourbon, Wayne's Pistachio RY4, Skiddlz's Bangin Bourbon Bread, Fear's Abuela and Cardinal, and my Snickerdoodle Cookie, Mango Blossom Macaron, and Longing. Edit: Plus various other things, those are mostly versatile ingredients.
You don't seem to have:
FA Fuji
FA Bilberry/TFA Blueberry Extra/FW Blueberry
INW Lemon Mix
LA Lemonade
FA Lemon Sicily
I also use FA Cocoa in a fair bit (it's a really good base for hot chocolates, @~.25%)
Also, FA Polar Blast, WS-5 and WS-23 would be good additions.
I'm trying to make something close to Mt Baker's Pear flavor. The only thing I can find is something I posted on a year ago. Should I just buy there nonflavored juice from them (I'm lazy) and buy some pear TFA and mix it?
Why not try this?
FW Pear. Pretty much all of MB juices are just single or double flavor FlavorWest recipes. You're welcome.
Hah, I like that "You're welcome", and thank you. So, is mixing it with mt baker's unflavored juice gonna work?
First a little about where I am in the hobby:
I started a few weeks ago, bought a uwell crown III initially which has worked well with all of the juices I've used, and then moved on to a geekvape zeus, making my own coils and I'm having trouble wicking it. I'm not sure what my problem is, but I've tried the "scottish roll" and a few other techniques for wicking, but I continue to either get dry hits or spit back and flooding. The reason I brought this up is because I have a PG sensitivity so I use really high VG juice. I've been vaping daily dose ejuice which I'm not sure of the exact PG/VG ratio, but I've tried others like lost art max vg which is 85VG/15PG and I still get really bad throat scratches, like to the point where I cough no matter how small of a hit I take. I would like to get into DIY ejuice because buying it premade is going to leave me broke, and I'd like vaping to be a healthier and cheaper alternative to smoking.
So I guess my question is are there any good places to find zero PG recipes? I've been searching google and youtube and haven't found much. I've found VG flavors, but it looks like the recipes would be different. Any help would be much appreciated, thanks for reading my wall of text.
EDIT: Also, can anyone tell me if steeping will help with the soar throat feeling from PG?
There are a lot of really good, low flavor % recipes. Most of our flavors are suspended in PG, which is why you encounter it in commercial juice as well. Take a look at recipes from Folkart on alltheflavors.com and also the recipe 24k by /u/concreteriver.
As for the wicking, use just enough so that the cotton slides through the coils with a decent amount of resistance(about as much as is needed to pop the tab on an easy-open can of peaches), cut the wicks to just barely brush the bottom of the deck, then use your tools to sort of flick the tails and get them fluffy. If you're using Japanese cotton, don't. It doesn't wick as well as free-grain cotton in something like cotton bacon v2(my personal favorite for the past 2-3 years) as the grain in japanese cotton is much smaller and doesn't like high VG as much as free-grain.
Thank you! I am using organic japanese, I'll have to try something else. I'm pretty sure they have cotton bacon at the local shop. And thanks for the recipe suggestions.
I am also sensitive to PG. Not sure if this helps, but if you mix your own base with 100% VG, you might want to consider adding purified/distilled water to it. VG has much higher viscosity than PG, and if your juice is too thick, it won't wick well and you get dry hits. In response, you end up stuffing less cotton in the wicking ports to avoid dry hits, then you end up with flooding. I have been there.
I suggest adding 5-7% water to a 0/100 PG/VG ratio. That way you can put more cotton in the wicking ports and get less flooding/spitback issues.
Spitback is a more complicated topic that can have a lot of reasons. Apart from too much juice in your chamber, it could also be that your power output is too low, especially if you use big coils (coils with lots of surface area, like a Clapton).
Hmm... That is good to know. I have been making my own claptons... They measure out to be anywhere between .5 and .7 ohms. I normally run them ~50 watts. Think that might be too low?
some combinations of creams gave me bad throat scratches too. I narrowed it down to combining butryic acid-based ingredients as the culprit and now I don't combine certain creams, problem solved. So look at the ingredients of the juice not necessarily the vg/pg issue.
Question regarding If You Like Pina Coladas recipe by /u/ID10-T
I mixed this one up, with pretty much the exact ingredients and volumes, and after a good week of steep I am getting a nice Pina Colada, but it has some off-flavors I wanted to ask about. It's hard to describe, probably some dry/burned (not smoky) flavors that, after some thinking, remind me of the hard, brown coconut shell. At first I thought it's the rum, but I believe now it's the coconut.
Note: Instead of "TFA Coconut" and "TFA Coconut Candy", I used the diketone-free "DX" versions of the flavors.
Has anyone experienced this? Is there a way to fix this?
You answered your own question, don't use that DX crap.
But don't toss it out yet, put it away for three more weeks and see if it gets any better.
Thanks for the reply. Since you experimented with that juice for quite a bit, is it reasonable to leave out the TFA coconuts as they are used in small amounts, without ruining the flavor?
What is your take on diacetyl and acetoin in flavorings? I know this is a controversial topic, but would you rather use the better-tasting non-DX flavors despite the potential diketone risks?
You can't just leave them out. They're used in small amounts because they're very strong flavors. I bet you could create your own piña colada using something like FLV Sweet Coconut instead of those TFA ones if you wanted to. I wouldn't recommend trying to make one with just FA Coconut though.
I would rather use the better tasting flavors... In moderation. You won't see me vaping 10% CAP Vanilla Custard V1 + 5% FW Yellow Cake all day everyday, but if there's a little acetoin in my coconut, I see it as, at least I'm not smoking. If someone does want to vape massive buttery diacetyl constantly, that's their business and at least they aren't smoking. If someone wants to avoid all diketones on the chance that they might be harmful, more power to them. Risk reduction is a spectrum, different people fall into different places on it and that's ok. There's no reason why that needs to be controversial.
Question regarding ecigexpress delivery.
I live in Mexico, so I don't buy there normally. But I'll have an opportunity for a friend to bring my purchase from USA, so...
If I choose the free shipping, does that option actually require signature to deliver? It's that it looks like they just lump together all terms and conditions for all shipping methods in a single paragraph..
Thanks!
Anything better than TFA Pie Crust for that crust note? How does the FW equivalent stack up? I don’t dislike TFA but i find it needs a fair amount of sweetener to offset the dry breadiness.
If you are going for straight up traditional pie crust, FA Apple Pie is pretty good. Not a whole lot of apple going on. Generally it is used specifically for a crust note and what little apple is there is easily covered up by other ingredients. A lot depends on the exact recipe you are trying to mix though. Sometimes a touch of Biscuit (INW or JF) will do the trick, TFA Graham Cracker Clear or CAP Sugar Cookie work well in some situations, or even just good ole AP. FA Almond is excellent for putting the baked "crust" around a donut, cake etc. I don't have any experience with FW Pie Crust.

Can I substitute Lemon Sicily, or some combination of lemons (I have a few) in recipes that call for small percentages of Lemonade?
Would a lemon + sweetener be a pretty close approximation to a lemonade flavor?
I know i should just order a lemonade, but i have a ton of other flavors at the moment and I’m trying to hold off on making an order until I need to reup on some of my go-to flavors.
Sour Wizard/citric acid is a great additive for doing lemonade type flavors, especially if you really like the Lemon Sicily you have. Worth picking up 10ml of it to play around with
'Real' lemonade (brand-name/storebought) is rarely just lemons and sugar, there's always another profile in it to distinguish it from other brands - Try just a touch of raspberry or something else acidic in line with your own tastes to see if that lights it up for you
I'm gonna repost this from a couple weeks ago. I ended up making some cos for Mr. u/ID10-T, he might be able to vouch for them.
Wanted to throw this out there without making a new post for it, unless you guys think I should.
I'd like to offer fused clapton wire shots/coils to all of you guys if you can just cover shipping + a few bucks to offset cost of supplies. I started making my own because AVS stopped carrying the kind I liked. I'm no pro, but my wire is clean and has no gaps. I've got SS 316L from 24-40g. I've been using 24x2/36 and the flavor is phenomenal. The whole spectrum of flavor is there, there is a brightness and top end I'd never tasted before in all my juice, retail and diy. I've also started making helix wire, which is 2 or more strands twisted, then a smaller gauge twisted into the grooves if that makes sense. 24x2/36x2 produces that same bright, full flavor I get from that fused I mentioned. Anyway, I'm not trying to make any money, and I don't have a ton of free time to crank out a shitload of wire, but if anyone wants a few shots / pre-made fused clapton coils I'd be happy to give back what I can to a community that had been so incredibly helpful to me.
I have long been envious of my friend Rory (TooTall on ATF) because he has a coil guy who makes him these fancy coils. Will you be my coil guy?
Begging for friends on reddit.
Is there some rule waiting after you mix and shake up your juice? should you let it settle and the air bubbles dissolve or does this not matter?
I usually add my flavors first, then nic then shake a bit, then add pg and shake more, then add half the vg and shake and then the other half and shake. Do I really need to shake for very long or is a quick 2-3min after finishing the mix okay?
I don't shake shit until I'm done. Fill the bottle to the bottom of the shoulder(where it starts rounding the corner to make the top of the bottle), and you'll have enough air to just be able to shake for like 30s and have a mixed ejuice.
I don't wait for shit.
Rebel Without A Long Shake
And you don't think there's a difference? Ever done a comparison for fun?
Almost all commercial ejuice from Malaysia is 6mg nicotine but when I mix my own juice up at 3mg nic I get light headed, this doesn't happen with the commercial 6mg ejuice. I'm pretty confused.
At first I thought it was because I was using some low quality nicotine from China but I just got some new nic from Nicotine River and it's basically the same thing, lightheaded after chain vaping a few rips on my Hadaly RDA. Oddly enough when I mix 6mg nic in a single flavor FA Soho or TFA RY4D and vape MTL using a Kayfun I never feel lightheaded and I chain vape like crazy.
6mg in an MTL is equal to about 1.5mg in an RDA. If you normally vape commercial in a MTL tank at 6mg, then 3mg on a hadaly will be a bit more nicotine than you're used to.
I was looking for something quick to mix up and decided on this

I'm gonna sub the salted Carmel for HS Caramel but I've never used HS other than the ice cream in Vurve's Daily Driver recipe and remember him saying HS is super concentrated and you don't need much. What % you think I should use it in the above recipe? Im going for a more tobacco forward profile.
I'm new to making ejuice and I'm not too sure about my flavour concentrations. I've been going off the recommended range get on the flavour bottle but I can't seem to get a good flavour profile. Does anyone have any recommendations?
The advice you got seems pretty solid. You could also check the flavorwiki. If ATF had a 'median percentage used in recipes' feature, that would be useful too. Haven't checked to see if it does, tho...
If it doesn't ELR does, and it's usually a pretty good starting point.
I'm a huge fan of Boo Boo by Silverback. I found the remix here and it looks pretty spot on but I don't quite have the flavors and am reaching out for opinions.
I have TFA Grape Juice and TFA Grape Candy (which subs in quite well for me). I also have TFA's Wild Blueberry and Blueberry EXTRA.
My problem is with the blueberry. Is there a combo with the Wild Blueberry and Blueberry EXTRA to get pretty close?
Just getting into DIY juice, can anyone tell me base used in RF super concentrates? I was drawn to them because they make the VG base flavorings, but the more I research the more I see people raving about the super concentrates. I read somewhere that they are alcohol based? Is that true? I want to make a PG free juice, will these super concentrates work for that?
Edit: Just bought a bunch of FA and RF flavorings. Thanks for the help guys. Hopefully they work well and don't mess with my throat.
Is there a specific reason why you want to avoid PG? Their super concentrate line does use PG as far as I know.
I would advise against going the pure VG route unless you are unable to vape PG for serious health reasons. Mixing with VG based flavorings is a major pain in the ass and will severely limit what you can make. Pretty much all of the best flavorings are PG based. PG seems to carry flavoring better and is far easier to mix with.
It’s not serious health reasons, but I have a pretty bad PG sensitivity. I’ve used “max vg” juices that are 70/30, 80/20, even 85/15 that still mess with me. It’s uncomfortable.
I know it’s a pain in the ass to work with that’s why I was asking.
If you use more concentrated brands like FA, INW and FLV, you can get plenty of flavor at a very low percentage with miniscule amounts of PG involved. Using VG based nic and a tiny amount of distilled water to reduce viscosity if necessary, you can get a lot closer to actual "max VG" than anything marketed as such, in spite of using PG based flavorings.
A max VG juice that is 70/30? Are you vaping recipes that are 30% flavor? When I hear max VG I think like 90/10. If everything you're vaping is >15% flavor that could be part of the problem. Could be totally wrong here, but your wording made it seem like it's only certain juices that give you problems.
I have a similar experience, but its a sensitivity to certain flavors, not to PG. Like for some reason, LA Lemonade and practically every orange flavor absolutely burn my throat.
A mixture of PG and EtOH. The "super concentrates" name is just a buzzword meaning the flavors no longer take 15% to be in a usable range. The "super concentrates" align closer with the average usage numbers of TFA, CAP, and FA.
Placing an order at chefs tomorrow after work, have a pretty solid list of flavors going but wanted a few suggestions on tobacco flavorings. I know flv seems to make the best tobacco concentrates, so which ones would be good if I were to only order 1 or 2? I Will most likely be using them along with creams, fruit or bakery concentrates after a single flavor testing (not sure I would enjoy a tobacco only recipe).
Also, to those of you whom have tried them, is there 1 or 2 vape train concentrates I should give a try? Figure I might as well hop on that hype train as well.
I've only tried FLV Red Burley, Native and Cured. The first one is amazing, it's spicy and nutty, rich, flavorful and just delicious. I don't know how to even begin describing the other two, but they're a bit more dry, more like plain tobacco than aromatic, yet not quite like any tobacco I ever tried.
I have tried a few from FA, TFA and MB, and they are mostly not worth the time and money.
I haven't tried any VT concentrates yet. They're on the way. But I have been hearing complaints about their tobaccos. So, for now at least, I'd recommend not getting those.
If I could only have one FLV tobacco, it would be Red Burley. Two? Red Burley and Cured. Three? Red Burley and Cured and Kentucky Blend.
What's chefs? Ive been ordering from wizard but after the credit card thing fuck that
They are a UK based vendor with outstanding customer service and selection. They offer cheap, flat rate shipping to North America and recently won diyordies vendor of the year award. Only gripe I have with them is their website is kind of a pain to navigate/search for flavors on. Additionally, I would advise to only get flavor concentrates/one shots from them, you could probably find nic base and pg/VG from north america for a bit cheaper (not sure if they even sell bases and nic).

Does anyone know of any stores that might sell propylene glycol in 4oz / 8oz bottles?
I know Tractor Supply sells gallons, but I don't need a gallon.
Online vendors have absolutely insane shipping prices.
125-150ml of nicotine = $3-4 for shipping..
..that's awesome. I'm going to buy more nicotine. $4 to ship $9 of nicotine seems fair.
..but if you add on 250ml of PG = $12 shipping!
So, it costs $10 to ship $4 of PG?
I've checked Tractor Supply, GNC, WalMart, CVS and Walgreens.
They either don't have it or only sell it in $20+ gallons.
I absolutely do not need a gallon of PG.
This is extremely frustrating. I can get 240ml of juice from vendors for $5 shipping, but 250ml of PG is $10 shipping.
Amazon
Adding to that, I see this method mentioned a lot.
Call your local pharmacies, I used to buy 120ml for $3-$5 from a few different ones. Ma and Pa stores are a better option than the big chain stores. Just tell them your ol lady is making candles.
Thanks.. I didn't even know I had local pharmacies anymore, but it looks like there are three left among the sea of CVS, Walgreens and Rite-Aids.
After reading the Amazon reviews for the one 6oz PG that they sell with real free-shipping, it turns out they're only filling the bottles up 3/4 of the way. (It's basically 4oz for the price of 6oz.)
The non-corporate pharmacies are all closed on weekends, so I'll go check on Monday.
Barring that, I guess the next best thing is Bull City.. I compared PG/shipping prices with everyone and they're 8.37 for ~7oz.
Hey lads so I made my own juice and I have a question so I made a 60ml bottle of grape 7mg of concentrate grape flavour 70VG-40PG and 10mg of nicotine but my juice aint orange like nicotine flavours from the store is it something I did wrong or is my nicotine?
Should I use gram values for nic/vg/pg/flavors from posters on reddit or use a syringe and measure out 1ml of each to see? I only have a $15 scale chinese scale but it does measure to the hundredth, but maybe not reliably.
Also i use a wine app version of ejuicemeup that someone here posted but everytime I launch the gram values are reset, is there any way to instal/run the app differently so it saves the values?
You should get a calibration weight so you can tell if your scale is measuring accurately. I also have a cheap $10 China scale and it's more accurate than my AWS scale (which is now getting refunded/exchanged). I always check with a 100g weight prior to mixing just to make sure my scale is working correctly and it's saved me a few times already. Worth its weight in gold having some of those around.
I use a cheap Chinese scale too, you get used to it ;) It's far better than syringes for sure.
You can assume everything weighs 1 g/ml except anything VG (nic, premixed base etc). Pure VG weighs 1.26 g/ml.
No idea about the app, is there no feature for saving?
Lets say I have a 5% mix of flavor #1, 10% mix of flavor #2, and 25% mix of flavor #3.
If I drip 10 total drops on my rda, 2 drops of flavor #1, 4 drops of flavor #2, and 4 drops and flavor #3, is this pretty similar as making a mix with flavor #1 at 1%, flavor #2 at 4%, and flavor #3 at 10%?
Assuming my math is correct would this work?
Unfortunately no. If you combine two 100% flavors in equal parts, then the resulting mix consists of 50% of each. Combine four flavors this way and each one represents 25% of the final mix. So any time you use a method like this, you also have to divide by the number of flavors involved. Add different percentages of each to the equation and you have yourself a serious math problem.
Plus, drops aren't very accurate.
Taking a shot at making my first recipe...... help please! I'm going for a key lime cheesecake. Is this a decent starting position?
CAP NY Cheesecake 4%
CAP Graham Cracker 2%
TFA Key Lime 3%
CAP Lemon Meringue Pie V2 1%
CAP Bavarian Cream 1%
CAP Super Sweet .5%
Looks like a decent enough first attempt, give it a shot. The key lime will probably take the front seat for the first week or two, but a recipe like this needs a bit of steep to come together anyway. Give it a taste every few days to see how it changes over time.
I'm not sure about the graham cracker though, I would probably skip that for now as it will put a bitter/pungent blanket over the whole thing.
Thanks! Wasn't aware that graham cracker would do that. Any thought of bumping up the Cheesecake or Bavarian?
Yea, I'm not a fan of CAP Graham, TFA's is much better IMO. I wouldn't increase the cheesecake, it starts to get a bit weird at higher percentages, it would be better to add something complementary. You could up the Bavarian though if you want more creaminess.
But these are my opinions, we may not agree. Give it a spin and see how you like it rather than second guessing, then you'll have a much better idea of what to improve. Developing a recipe requires time and patience, you won't nail it on your first attempt.
Guys how do you abbreviate Capella's Silverline? I've seen a few but I feel
(CSL) should be what's used? Is there something I'm missing?
I have seen (CAP) (SL)
And (CAP) (Silverline)
But (CSL) seems easier to me.
Anywho what do you guys think?
I wouldn't understand CSL unless I had seen this discussion. It's still CAP, just add in the SL before or after the name like we do with TFA DX or CAP V1/V2.
Many brands have different lines and that part is usually omitted, either because they only have one concentrate by that name or because one is always highly favored over another. INW and FA are the only brands I know of with duplicate names where it may clash.
hey guys, I'm still pretty green when it comes to mixing and I'm getting ready to place another concentrate order. i have been craving a raspberry filled glazed donut juice similar to humble's jackpot. what raspberry concentrate would you guys recommend to get that jelly rasberry flavor and what glazed donut should i get? Also a recipe for it would be welcome if anyone has a good one. i searched for some clone recipes and only found a few but a lot of the comments were not so good. thanks everyone
You probably want more than one bakery flavor... FA Zeppola, and CAP Donut, maybe? For a raspberry jam... probably TFA Raspberry Sweet and some other fruit, maybe even a marshmallow and FA Amber. Basically, you're looking at creating two separate profiles. Get one down, then work on the other.
ok great advice, thank you.
You're going to also want a cake ingredient to pad out the inner of the donut too. I made a blueberry one, which was super sweet with all the meringue, cap glazed donut and zeppola that I used... but it missed something in the middle, other than the jam, if you will.
I'm struggling to get jf yellow cake... but I've heard Nonna's cake could be good. I've got a 10ml of funnel cake and tfa waffle to try and achieve this too.
I'm working on a rasp jam and croissant recipe and am using Inw rasp shisha and a touch of Flv boysenberry for the jam. Might also want to try a bit of liquid amber. Wonder flavours makes a good glazed donut flavor also.
That sounds pretty good. What do you thinking of adding a touch of black current to get the jelly consistency or does the boysenberry cover that pretty well?
Where do you guys get your nic base? I used to love Wizard but after the credit card thing im done with them
Im actually gonna go with nicvape.com. any input on them?
Hello fellow mixers, I'm really struggling to create a tart base, similar to dinner lady tart juices, i tried many variations but I'm kinda stuck. Any help would be appreciated, cheers!
I've gone through a large bottle of LA watermelon in my minty menthol mix. I had to use it in copious percentages to get much flavor. I need a new brands watermelon/watermelon candy. Shit, recommend a few. As well as a Fuji/green apple. I have TFA green apple and it's alright, but I just remember that Fuji juice from adirondack and want to emulate it. Super candyish.
I prefer a mix of FA Watermelon and CAP Sweet Watermelon.
FA or JF Fuji
What's your preferred percentages when using them together?
You got a recipe you like featuring Fuji? I've only tried 3% TFA green apple and 1% INW grape and gone through a few 60mls of it, as well as one semi successful pairing with TFA white peach which has an off-taste to me.
What are the bottles called that have a skinny tip but is uniform from top to bottom. I'm thinking it's a needle tip but want confirmation before I order a crap ton. I do not want unicorn bottles.
Any other canadian mixers ever dealt with Chef's? I've been waiting on a shipment from them for about a month... tracking shows it getting on a plane at Heathrow 9 January, and nothing. There's no real reason for customs to grab it, based on what was in it... is a month typical wait time?
Isn't /u/mlNikon Canadian?
Completely unreasonable though, have you contacted them about it? They might help you figure out what happened to it, or offer some form of compensation.
Meh. Canada sucks for shipping stuff in or to. So a month could be typical. So I don't want to get too worked up until I know for sure.
I am new to this DIY and for reasons out of my control I am trying to be more cost effective/prudent about my vaping supply purchases.
I am curious if this 1mg nicotine base comes ready to vape or does it have to be mixed down further? I have read the listing a few times but it does not clearly say it is ready to vape. I would appreciate anyone with more knowledge having a look and telling me what they think? Thank you!
https://www.nicotineriver.com/products/1mg-e-liquid-nicotine
You can vape that as is or add flavoring to it. But it's not cost efficient.
The best bang for the buck is ordering PG, VG and nic separately. The more concentrated the nic, the more you save.
I've also looked into that, but the product I linked to is what I am looking for if it's ready to go out of the box, I vape a lot of flavorless liquid as is and that is definitely cheaper for me. I appreciate your reply!
Can someone explain the general difference in flavor when using Peach, Apricot, or pear as an additive for Apple recipes? Im working on an Apple bakery recipe and am trying to decide if i should layer in another apple or maybe try using one of those three fruits as an additive? The apple im using as the main note is CAP Double Apple. I dont really want to put the recipe out in public because its still in development and is going to be released for the DMC Monthly Mixers Challenge, so im just hoping someone could give me general thoughts and ideas on how Pear, Apricot, or Peach can modify an apple flavor?
Help is much appreciated as always, hopefully my question makes sense haha.
You can't use just any such concentrate, this is a good example of why subbing can defeat the purpose. You're looking for specific properties in a concentrate to support the main flavor without interfering too much.
One of my ADVs is this simple concoction:
1% FA Fuji, 2% TFA Strawberry Ripe, 2% TFA Juicy Peach, 1% CAP Apricot
It's an apple vape. You wouldn't know that unless you were familiar with the concentrates, but Fuji completely dominates this recipe. I used Juicy Peach to, well, make it juicier and brighter. Apricot gives it some jammy, syrupy notes, like a nectar. And Strawberry Ripe ties it all together and makes it a bit sweeter. But it doesn't really taste of any peach, apricot or strawberry, it tastes apple. Use any other concentrates and the balance goes out the window, use FA Apricot for example and you get the raw fruit instead of the nectar.
You could use 0.5% FA Pear in this to make it a bit more wet, moist. No other pear would really do that IMO.
Basically you're looking for very specific properties in a concentrate, not the flavor itself. I hope that helps explain it.
Nice! Thanks for that detailed answer, this definitely helps a bunch.
The specific concentrates I am working with are: fa pear, fa white peach, fa Fuji, fa apricot, cap double apple, and I also have most of the common Strawberry concentrates which I would have never thought to use as an additive to apple. I mainly want to make the apple a bit more juicy, and more gooey If that make sense. Like a cooked, thinly sliced apple in an apple pie. Still a bit of crunch but also kind of soft when compared to a fresh apple.
Looks like I'm going to have to do some experiments and research some flavor notes to see how what will work best for me.
Ok, so most of us start out mixing solely for ourselves, but there's a lot who mix for others. So this question is for those who mix for other people... when you get a request to mix something that you would never vape, how would you approach the challenge of crafting a recipe without a firm idea of what you're trying to do, and no idea how to make it good? I've got someone who wants a 'vanilla' ejuice. I ordered a vanilla concentrate for the task (from diyfs) but I don't know if a single concentrate in the juice is really a great idea or if I should mix some other bland thing in, or if it would or wouldn't benefit from cooling? Or try messing with thickeners or cactus or some sort of booze. I don't want to invest in a lot of concentrates for this mix, so it's kinda annoying that I took the challenge on, but I gave my word to mix a batch before knowing what was gonna be asked for, so...
If that's diyfs holy vanilla, you can mix it up solo at 2% and call it a day.
Now, is that as in "good enough" like, say, 2% INW Grapes tastes ok on its own, but can be better with cooling, or as in "adding anything will probably fuck it up"?
I've tried to mix holy vanilla with a few different vanilla to try to get it to be better, and failed. If your friend wants straight up vanilla just mix it solo. But you could mix it with, say, 5% Cap sugar cookie for a simple vanilla cookie. Or add some fruit as an accent. Depending on what they want.
To answer your question directly: it's good on it's own.
If they just want vanilla , best mix I can think of is
-
0.75% INW shisha vanilla
-
1.5% DIYFS holy vanilla
For a more dense flavor add 2% CAP sugar cookie
Yeah.... don't have sugar cookie. Don't have any real use for it. I could try marshmallow, toasted marshmallow, sweet cream, or MTS wizard to thicken the unholy vanilla... dunno if that's what you mean by 'dense' tho... I'll have to see if there's anything else I'm forgetting I have that would maybe work. Not sure if INW Marzipan would be a good idea or not...
I was in the same boat with a friend wanting a straight vanilla vape. Came up with this, and he now buys 300ml off me each month. It's also in my regular rotation too
https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/6f7q59/vanilla_glory/?utm_source=reddit-android
Of those, I MIGHT have (or have use for) CAP Sweet Cream. I've got a few orders on their way, I think I ordered a sweet cream. Not sure who by. I have no interest in buying a shitload of concentrates just for this one mix, and as I find vanilla disgusting, I would have zero use for them otherwise. I have no reason to believe someone who actually likes vanilla wouldn't like it, but it's not exactly useful for me.
So, I recently got some new condiment bottles from Sam's Club and just realize that the caps can't be completely closed. Is throwing a regular cap over the opening enough to keep the VG and PG from spoiling? I REALLY like the condiment bottles. 16oz, easy to squeeze, and they fit into my juice bottles perfectly.
Squeeze the bottle. If liquid comes out, it's not air tight. Or do you mean simply resting the cap on top? That would be iffy at best.
I have to squeeze really hard to get liquid to come out of a full bottle, but I can hear a slight whistle. I'll just go back to my twist cap bottles. Thanks for your input.
Have another question I'm hoping can be answered.
I'm doing a bunch of single flavor tests, but only have 30ml bottles. Is it bad to mix small amounts of juice (10-15ml) in 30ml bottles? Does the empty space filled with air affect the flavor similarly to leaving the lid off a bottle/breathing your juice?
I always found the whole "letting it breath" thing to be a myth. You could mix in open containers and it would taste the same. If you happened to be testing a flavor that contains alcohol or violates (lots of fruits/citruses) you can leave it uncapped to let them evaporate away, but I don't find it necessary. It certainly seems to have no affect on taste.
Empty space in a container can increase the rate of oxidization of nicotine over time, changing the color and fouling the taste a bit, but it's not generally something you need worry about (unless you are storing big quantities).
