This Flavor of the week is Poppin': CHERRIES!!!
submitted over 7 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

#This week's flavor is: CHERRY

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested!

If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to request one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

The NOTED podcasts, which are bascially video FOTWs, are listed on this sheet. maintained by /u/apexified

Cherry can turn into cough syrup super quickly depending on the brand and percentage. I recommend using cherry as low as possible in any application to avoid this. (some brands/etc are unavoidable though because they are just horrible)

TFA Cherry Blossom - my go to. I use at 1% or lower. It may not work in all cherry applications but has worked for me for most. even works well in bakeries

http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/1420714/Dad%20likes%20Bath%20N%20Body%20Works

FA Black cherry - this flavor is just okay. Again, I use less than 1%

MF Black cherry - similar to FA but stronger and more authentic. I do believe this has an alcohol base. Steeping is necessary. 0.50%-1%

INW Cherries - nice cherry mixture. To me it's a combination of maraschino and black cherry, which I think was what was intended. Again, I use this at 1% or lower

MF White cherry - tastes like what it is. IDK what else to say. Again, I think MF is alcohol based. Requires steep. I use at less than 1%... usually 0.50%... MF's are strong overall

FA Cherry - this is only okay if I mix it with FA Black cherry at equal parts. Otherwise it tastes too medicinal. I use it at half a percent w/ half a percent of black cherry added.

Cherries I've tried and have not liked thus far: TFA Black Cherry, FW Natural Cherry, WF Black Cherry Bean (could be a percentage issue) , INW Cherry (not to be confused with CHERRIES),

Wait... is that Black Cherry Jelly Bean you dislike so much? Odd. I have a juice I did for a friend (a candy fiend) I have to look up my records, but it used that jelly bean with marzipan, amaretto, and IIRC English toffee. Might've had a touch of marshmallow. He just refers to it as "that cherry one" so who knows... it is more a candy cherry than a real cherry tho.

A lot of people love that Jelly Bean flavor. That's why I bought it. So far, to me, it's disgusting... But I may just not have found a good percentage for it yet. (I think I noted that.. if not, I meant to) So there's possibly still hope... but so far... no bueno.

Maybe you just need it in the right mix?

One of the first flavors I ever played with was tfa maraschino cherry; I mixed it with an almond concentrate and it tasted like baby wipes. I can’t vape cherry anymore without gagging.

Fresh? I must have a bad bottle. Mine smells like used baby diaper.

Fresh or used baby wipe?

And how, exactly, did you determine what a baby wipe tastes like?

3 points

by Prometheus_unwoundover 7 years ago

Frash. Taste/ smell- those lines are blurred now thanks to vaping.

You taste with your nose, right? "How do you know what X tastes like?" where X = something gross is a silly question.

I think you're not alone in giving up on cherry after a traumatic experience. I haven't given up on it yet but, man. So much cough syrup vape. Ugh.

by WorstAdviceROCover 7 years ago

When you spend a week at a dirt track in the middle of BFE and forget your toothbrush. I wrapped a baby wipe around my finger and went to scrubbin. I also do this when trucking and I can't be dicked to stop and brush. It ain't bad.

Limited experience with cherry, but INW Black Cherry for Pipe was a whole lot better than I expected it to be. I was terrified of a mouth full of warm cough medicine, but it has zero cough medicine taste. It’s a nice, dark cherry with a little bit of tobacco “kick.” By that I mean I don’t really taste the tobacco, but it’s got a bit of throat hit and it feels good.

INW Red for Pipe has a bit of cherry to it as well, but it’s a bit brighter and has some more stuff going on than just the cherry.

I think I should probably revisit my Black Cherry for Pipe recipe now that this has me thinking about it.

INW is one of the few companies that does cherry right. Love Black Cherry for Pipe almost as much as I love Captain Jack for Pipe

2 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimover 7 years agoresident tobacco expert

Captain Jack is a little weird for me. I can’t really use it over .5% or things just get funky. What kind of profiles do you use it in? Maybe I just haven’t found a good match for it.

Usually something a bit on the wetter side as far as tobaccos. Either with something boozey to help tame the spice bits, or some Lovage to wet it down and tame some of that dirty cig/dry spice thing it's got going on.

CBV, I have an ADV in my arsenal right now that uses BC4P:
2.5% SM A+ Blend
2.5% SM Turkish Oriental
2.5% SM Oriental 456
2% INW Black Cherry for Pipe
1.5% INW Vanilla Shisha
I toyed around with Vanilla for Pipe and Vanilla Tahity. FA Marzipan for BC4P. Came right back to BC4P and Van Shisha. Vanilla for Pipe is good but Shisha to me pops out more.

My holy grail is a great cherry cheesecake vape recipe. I can't seem to get past the medicinal taste of most cherry flavorings, though. Seems to be the main problem in making any cherry-flavored recipes from my experience and reading other's notes.

Have you tried FW Cherry Crush?

I used it on a soda recipe, paired with FW Dr Cola and TFA Vanilla Swirl, a few months ago. I picked the leftovers a few days ago... and to me, that thing tastes most predominantly like somewhat natural cherry now (or that's as far removed as the flavor I associate with syrup and maraschino cherries). So... Maybe, maybe there is hope after a loooooooong steep. A couple months or so.

edit: I used about 3% of FW cherry crush in my mix, if that matters.

That's what I came here to say. FW Cherry Crush is phenomenal, NO MEDICINAL TASTE oh lawd thank you.

I'm so glad to see other people like FW Cherry crush! I love it! I like to use it for making candy juices. I also have OSDIY wild cherrylicious but I haven't tried it yet. Have you used that one?

2 points

by Steepnkeepover 7 years ago

Ohh,what about some kind of cherry cheesecake & jam? Or cherry caramel mix? (though I don't know of any cherries that would work with, mine taste too artificial?)

Trying out wild cherry & cotton candy for the hell of it,not expecting much though (it needs a bit of steep time)

Cherry cheesecake would be so amazing .

Cheesecake is a flavor I have never seen replicated in a vape. I don’t know how people call some of their recipes Cheesecake . They taste nothing like it - not bad - just not Cheesecake at all

You get a decent cherry taste with FA Marzipan around 3%. It doesn't taste cough syrupy or whatever either. INW Marzipan 0.5-1% has a similar effect, but it's definitely more intense and almost jammy. I'm convinced they would make a great Twin Bing, but I can't quite nail the mushy chocolate part yet.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I've never had one of those but now I want to, if just to help you with the chocolate part.

Ever tried a Cherry Blossom? (Like a oversized cherry cordial chocolate, only the base is thick and contains toasted coconut.) A friend I make juice for is really interested in a clone of that.

INW Chocolate Cream?

2 points

by wh1skeyk1ngover 7 years agoThanks for reading this flair

Don't have that one, however INW Milk Chocolate, TFA Bittersweet Chocolate, nor TFA Double Chocolate clear got me remotely close. I've recently had better luck with FLV Milk Chocolate and a TFA White Chocolate together, but it's still not quite there.

2 points

by juthincover 7 years ago

Hmm. I'm guessing I should find some time this week to get all my cherry flavor notes together.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Please do. I need to do the same thing myself, and also test some cherries that I've been neglecting.

1 points

by juthincover 7 years ago

I've got about 8 cherry flavors, I think... the tough one to test is gonna be the Spumoni. I haven't wanted to touch it because I only have a 3ml sample...

by Bassmuttover 7 years ago

I've tried 3 cherry flavors. Tpa black cherry taste like a candle. Fa cherry reminds me of being sick when I was a kid. Wf black cherry jelly bean is pretty good. Oh and tpa cherry blossom in cherry belonging works pretty well.

Anyone tried FLv Rainier Cherry?

by thepatient23over 7 years agoFrugivore

Just read concrete river's review. NVM!!!

1 points

by juthincover 7 years ago

Don't always assume reviews are the final authority. As I mentioned in the past... LA Cherry used at .25% isn't bad. It's weak, but good. Maybe .3% would be better, or maybe a cherry version of the blueberry trinity (the Cherry Pantheon?) is the kind of thing needed. One day, I WILL crack the Cherry code. (Yeah. Kinda my obsession.)

2 points

by thepatient23over 7 years agoFrugivore

You're right of course. I like cherry sometimes; Not enough to experiment with them honestly. Hopefully you DO crack it and everyone can benefit.

Edit: oops, I meant bling cherry was discontinued and Rainer cherry replaced it. Disregard this comment.

INW Cherries + FA Black Cherry, only blend I and my friends don't get a medicinal cherry flavor but rather delicious jammy baked cherry. Just my 2 cents

They work together beautifully for a cherry cola.

0 points

It also works well with TFA white chocolate

Haven't tried that combo yet. Thanks for the tip.

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I've had some luck using INW Cherries and FA Black Cherry together too. Either one will get medicinal on you if you use them too high but together at low % you can get a decent cherry flavor. I don't know about jammy baked cherry, this was a cherry lemon-lime soda float that I never finished, but the reason it wasn't finished wasn't because the cherry wasn't good.

FW Cherry Crush, have you tried it? I've got a CAP Lemon-Lime/TFA Key Lime/FW Cherry Crush recipe in the tank right now, it's excellent.

2 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Yes I have. For me, taken up too high, it gets.... not quite medicinal like full-on cough syrup, but medicinal in the same way that cherry kool-aid tastes a little medicinal if you make it with too-little water. I'd use it lower and back it up with another cherry probably, same way I used INW Cherries above.

It think Lime is definitely one of the best ways to go with cherry, specifically CAP Lemon Lime. I'd like to know what %s of those three flavors you used there so I can try it. Whatever they are, I bet if you add some kind of ice cream-type flavor to that, you'll be very pleasantly surprised.

2 points

by Craftywineauxover 7 years ago

I'll have to get some FW to try

2 points

by drhappycatover 7 years ago

I have both of these but have never mixed them. For just the two mixed together, what percentages do you recommend?

2 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Try 1.5% INW Cherries and 0.5% FA Black Cherry.

1 points

by bigtidderover 7 years ago

Any idea if they work with tobaccos?

I love SC Cherry Cigar. It smells wonderful and tastes delicious but I find the vape quite waxy. So I'm trying to use it low and supplement the cigar and cherry notes. Here's my latest attempt I just put in the steep drawer for a few weeks:

Cherry Vanilla Cigar #2

Flavor | Percent :- | -: DFS Holy Vanilla | 3.00% SC Pall Mall (cigar-like chocolate tobacco) | 1.75% SC Cherry Cigar | 1.00% INW Cherries | 0.75% FA Black Cherry | 0.50%

Hope this doesn't turn into cough medicine. I tried a blueberry menthol tobacco once and it tasted like Buckleys. Ugh.

Do you normally like cherry flavored things other than to vape?

I like Cherry Coke. Cherry medicine (sometimes). I can't think of much else.

1 points

by juthincover 7 years ago

If you like cherry medicine, have I got good news for you.

LA Cherry @2%

But given you don't much like anything cherry flavored, I think you shouldn't like vaping it. Why would you vape something you don't like the taste of IRL?

Thank you for mentioning RF Cherry Pie. I've just started into DIY and saw it at my local vendor.

Can you share a few tasting notes on what you posted? Could you see the mix benefiting from anything else? Steep time?

I love cherry everything so it took me a while to find a good mix to use in recipes. My final mix is Inw Cherries, FW Black cherry, and TFA Black Cherry. I make a mix 2:1:1 and generally use it at 4-5%. Inw supplies the best cherry flavor, but its weak. The other two just add a bit more flavor, but slightly impart that medicine taste. Been loving this mix!

2 points

by juthincover 7 years ago

I might as well include this here...

Still in development, but people like this so far:

Cherry Candy v2

Flavor|percentage :-|-: FA marzipan|2% SC black cherry jellybean|1.27% FW amaretto|2.46% LA English Toffee|.6%

Also: percentages are by weight, and the odd numbers are due to recording actual amounts used in the mix and drop size affecting percentage. Nothing is so potent in this mix that plus or minus .05% should matter.

It was designed for an admitted candy freak. But it fits the FotW. And if it gives anyone any ideas....
