just bought a scale to get into mixing by weight, made a cheat sheet

This may not be relevant to a lot of you, but I'm trying to get into mixing by weight.

I'm used to doing things by volume with syringes, and the values don't always match up. so I made this cheat sheet.

I usually only work in 30 or 60ml batches, 70/30, 3mg, using 100mg PG nic base. So it's really only useful for that, but if it may help someone else, I thought I'd share it.

For SG I would probably just consider the flavorings to be 1mL=1g. It's pretty universal when dealing with recipe percentages. It makes recipe creation at least 3 times faster when you're figuring/writing out multiple quantities of juice.

ELR automatically takes SG into account so there's going to be some small discrepancies to that method.

Pretty sure you have to manually set it to use actual SG.

I havent changed the way i do things in a long time, so maybe im missing something, but why not just use http://e-liquid-recipes.com/create

It calculates everything for weight with zero headache.

I guess I'm just trying to save myself the headache of entering all my flavors in when I have them all written down already. I do use ELR, and truthfully I doubt I'll get through my first mix by weight attempt without eventually resorting to an app, but I think having a lot of my commonly used values on hand, written down may make the mixing go quicker.

I know what you mean. I have similar charts in my notes. Mostly for amount of PG to equal 30% with x% of flavorings. Sometimes you don't want to have to deal with electronics, and having it written down definitely saves time.

What's more tedious to me is putting my hand-written recipes into ATF or reddit for share purposes.

You really dont need to overcomplicate it.

Round the values to make a calculation simple, if you choose to make a cheat sheet.

PG based ingredients round to 1g per 1ml. VG rounds to 1.25g per 1ml.

I store all recipes as a 30ml batch. I buy my bottles in 30, 60, and 120. So obviously all recipes get multiplied by 1x, 2x, or 4x.

Doesn't the calculator you use require percentages? Percentages can cross over to any form of measurement you need.

of course, I normally use steam engine or ELR for calculations, but I have a ton of recipes where I've written down amounts by volume based on 30ml batches.

I also do my mixing by weight and made a spreadsheet where I enter the amount of juice I want to create.

The spreadsheet then do all the calculations and come up with the needed amounts of VG, PG, Nic and flavor.

I've never understood the point of doing it by weight, it seems like it would be more difficult to me.

Why don't the values match up when you do it by volume?

I've done both. I started mixing by volume, and then got the scale.

Since I used the EJuice calculator since day one, it was not an issue for me. I already had my recipes and ingredients captured, and it shows both volume and weight amounts.

mixing by weight involves a little more math, but a whole lot less cleaning syringes, beakers, measuring cups, etc.

the values don't match up because 1ml of liquid doesnt always weigh 1 gram. For example 1ml of PG weighs 1.038 grams, 1ml of VG weighs 1.26 grams. So you can't just use grams in place of mls.

There are tons of online calculators to help with with this though.

I've got a set of jewellers scales somewhere, but I'm pretty sure they would turn off before I could finish my measurements. Is that ever a problem for you?

I know a couple of scales I've used allow you to turn off auto off with a couple of presses of a button and setting a value to zero, might be hidden away in the manual or abit of googling might help you, I know one set of scales I used someone on amazon had posted how to disable the auto off

EDIT :

To adjust the idle time for the auto off function

When the scale is turned off, press and hold "M" key, at the same time, press "ON/OFF" key for 4 times quickly till number is displayed, then release the button.

To change auto-off time among 0/60/120/180 seconds: please press "M" key, after choosing, press "ON/OFF" key to confirm the setting. NOTE: The "0" option deactivates the auto-off function

It's not a problem for me. Mostly because the auto turn off timer resets each time I press on the TARE button. So I just need to have the ingredients gathered. Say, the recipe needs nicotine, VG, PG, and 4 flavors, I set all these 7 bottles aside, and press TARE each time I'm about to pour the next ingredient. No issues. But, If I overlook something and have to search my stash of 150 flavors for it, then it might auto shut down. And even then, no issues. I turn the scale back on and as far as I leave the bottle where I'm mixing on it, it sets it back to 0. Which the TARE button would have done that, anyway.

well, I'm not really the right person to ask since i just bought my first scale for mixing by weight, but auto-off is an issue I've heard people complain about before. There's a couple scales recommended here that don't have it.

I have something similar taped to my desk but only PG numbers. Flavors I just 1mL/1g. Makes life much easier. I typically just use it for 10ml flavor testing and I do 20ml in a 30 to test my own recipes (leaves me some head space for shaking). Anything bigger, I just use ATF.

If you have android, [E-Juice Lab] (https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.idland.oyvindi.e_juicelab) does all the hard work for you, it has weights for VG/PG and Nic in base and if you really want to and can find the gravities online, you can add the gravity for individual flavors, but i just stick to the default one, so recipes are consistent and often online recpies seem to stick with 1ml = 1g
