Lets come up with a kick ass crumble!
submitted over 7 years ago by mlNikon

Hey guys, I had an idea, there really isn't a good tried and true set crumble base or layer out there. Yes, I know, it can all depend on the recipe, but lets put our heads together to create an amazing crumble layer we can add to any mix. If you have one you use already, please share! If this is a dumb idea, feel free to flame me.

Have you checked out CAP Blueberry Cinnamon Crumble? The blueberry is borderline non existent, but it's got this super cool streusel / crumble thing going on that I bet would be the best starting point

that is one flavor I have not tried yet, thanks for the suggestion!

This is a great idea. The amazing flavor reviews by the likes of /u/concreteriver, yourself, and others, might be the best thing this subreddit has to offer, but they shouldn't be only thing and yet it seems like that's all anyone's posting these days. I'd love to see more activity like this, inviting the community to bang our heads together to solve a mixing problem. Maybe it will turn into such a project that a new sub is called for, like /u/SteepingTakesTime suggested, maybe not. At the very least, I hope the comments here help some future mixer who types "crumble" into a search here.

This is not a finished crumble base recipe. I haven't mixed it. It's just a brainstorm:

FLV Granola 0.5%

FA Cookie 0.75%

FA Meringue 0.5%

FA Nut Mix 0.5%

CAP Sugar Cookie 1.5%

You got your roasted oats, some crunchy texture, some sugar, some nuttiness, and a nice base to tie all of that together. What else to do you want in a crumble?

Maybe a little biscuit for some butter notes. Or do you get that from the cookies? I dunno kinda still new at this.

You get some butter from FA Cookie but now that you mention it, both the granola and the FA Cookie are a bit dark. If the combination came across as too overcooked together, the first thing I'd do in the next batch is use less FA Cookie and bring in some biscuit for a more blonde bakery that's also more buttery. Good call, I think.

That was kind of my thinking, glad you like it. Thanks for your imput. I was thinking sugar cookie than thought maybe it was too soft, this might be an actual decent place for tfa oatmeal cookie, even though we all know it doesn't taste like oatmeal at all, just a really dry cookie.

Meringue would soften it a bit so maybe the TFA Oatmeal cookie would work instead of CAP Sugar Cookie. Or TFA Pie Crust or FA Apple Pie instead of CAP Sugar Cookie. Or JF Biscuit, even. But if you just took out the sugar cookie without replacing it with a different sort of base you'd just wind up with this too-dry, too-top heavy thing. Of course if you're mixing it with something (chances are you're not vaping crumble unless it's on top of something soft and probably creamy) none of those things might be necessary, the dry top heavy thing might work just fine. I don't know, just random thoughts, no chance to mix any of this up yet.

I'm thinking fa apple pie, need a bit of brown sugar/cinnamon/butter that it brings so well.

I like your idea, but I see one problem we might run in to. This thread will only be on the front page for a day or two. This can take months to nail down. If you're serious about doing this, I think you should take the /r/GooberGrapeVape approach and make a community to share ideas.

Disregard all of what I just said if someone already has a banging recipe.

That's a great idea, we will see how much traction this gets first! Someone may already have the perfect crumble base.

Maybe the mods would approve pinning a community project to the top of the sub? I don't know if there's a limit, but could always ask about it.

Reddit only allows two pinned posts so that ain't happening, unfortunately.

Couldn't a link be put either on the top in the weekly/monthly threads list or in the subreddit info? We could do a project masterlist!

This would be fun. I would say I feel it would need FLV granola. ;)

I was thinking a touch of flv granola would be a good idea, and maybe wf oats and cream cookie.

I haven’t tried the wf yet. But from what you’ve said of it before I bet it would be good

How would FLV Pastry Zest do with it?

2 points

by mlNikonover 7 years ago

it might be good, it has a touch of cinnamon, but then the lemon note might be off putting.

by Craftywineauxover 7 years ago

To me, it is not a crumble without brown sugar with a bit of vanilla and a hint of cinnamon and of course flour and butter. These crumbles we make are for sweets and cheesecakes, coffee cakes, etc. More of tye streusal type.

So I'd suggest something with

TFA Brown Sugar

FA Bourbon Vanilla or other

CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl

And some sort of flour base with the butter to boost

Sorry for formatting.

I'm not sure of the definition of crumble, but since no one has mentioned them yet, I like TFA Pie Crust and FA Apple Pie. Both provide a sweet and buttery kind of dry dough that can be improved and nudged in any direction. Note that FA Apple Pie has almost no apple flavor. Speaking of apple pie, FLV Apple Filling is marvelous, tastes just like apple sauce with a touch of cinnamon, though that last part might just be the power of association. I digress.

I think fa apple pie would be a good element in a crumble since it's dry and has a bit of a cinnamon note to it.

So far the best crumble I've come up with is-

TPA Brown Sugar-0.5%

TPA Butter-0.25%-0.5%

FLV Lembas Bread-3%

FLV Rich Cinnamon-0.1%

OoO/TPA/FW Pie Crust @ varying %'s.

It all depends on the corresponding flavors though. If using tart fruits, I like to add FLV Cream, if I'm doing something like a Banana Nut Cluster I'll use FA Meringue.

In addition, Solubarome has some incredible crumbles, but you have to watch-I have SOL Red Fruit Crumble and SOL Raspberry Crumble, and one is great, the other sucks massively! At the moment however, I've forgotten which is which.

oh nice, thanks, I love lembas bread and have never thought to put it in a crumble, much less, at such a high %, I will have to give this a go. Thanks for the heads up on the sol lol I will just stay away from both since you don't know which is the winner.

In nz, its not a crumble without weetbix in the mix

What is weetbix and what flavor most resembles that?

Weetabix is the world's best crumble ingredient and the world's worst cereal.

Of course, but that is too easy, I wanted to get some community involvement going, but thank you for that!

1 points

by ID10-Tover 7 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

To anyone who doesn't know who you are or why you're doing this, this community involvement idea could look like a low-effort "do my work for me" kind of post, the kind that are listed under "posts which will be deleted." Next time, if you fill the actual post, rather than just the comments, with your own thoughts and experiences with flavors that might help with the project, there will be no mistaking it for something it isn't.

I can see how this looks like that! Thanks for the suggestion. Next time I will start things off with my own ideas and or work I've already done. Oh yeah, there will be a next time :)

I usually just do a simple FA mix of cookie and meringue. It’s not the best but it’s simple and tastes really good

I just got a bunch of INW new flavours. One of them is Rumble Crumble. Gonna give it a test and will report later.

Have you thought about using RF SC Oatmeal Cookie instead of TPA Oatmeal Cookie? It's meant to be quite good. I haven't used it but you should check it out cause youall could be missing out on something useful. Just my tuppence.

1 points

by mlNikonover 7 years ago

No I haven't tried that flavor yet. I really like wf oats and cream cookie too. Thanks for the input!

I tried my hand at making the most of TPA Oatmeal Cookie. As predicted, it was pretty awful. Had a perfumey taste of "raisins" followed by a confusing taste of don't-know-what grainy A.P. mixture. On ELR, most reviews are scathing of it too. Yeuck! Made a 10ml mix 30/70 24 hr steep

FA Apple Pie 1%

TPA Oatmeal Cookie 2%

FA Cookie .75%

CAP Cereal 27 2%

Added FLV Pound Cake at 0.5% for starch or flour to counter A.P. high end notes.

Sweetened with TPA Brown sugar 0.5%, FW Salted Caramel 1%

oh well, at least you tried, I guess tfa oatmeal cookie shall be banished to the trash bin after all.

by juthincover 7 years ago

I'm not really up on bakery flavors, but... the base ingredients of a good crumble IRL are pretty much the same as a shortbread cookie with cinnamon and oatmeal added... if that helps. I don't know if there's a reasonable shortbread flavor, but if there is it probably belongs in there.

I happen to have been working on a cinnamon apple crumble for the last month or so, this is the base I came up with:

FA Apple Pie 2%

INW Biscuit 0.5%

FA Butter 0.5%

CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl 0.75%

You may be tempted to leave out the CAP Danish Swirl because of the cinnamon, but I think it also adds a distinct cakey sweetness to the recipe that it would be a shame to lose.

As others have mentioned, the apple flavour in FA Apple Pie is pretty mild, so this could be adapted to other recipes.
