Flavors that fade over an extended period of time?
submitted over 7 years ago by RamboUnchained"I Bet I Could Clone That"

So, I'm currently making a bunch of 300-500mL batches because my schedule has gotten hectic lately and I really don't have time to mix as much as I used to anymore. I've had to buy juice twice in the past month simply because I forgot to mix juice at home and I don't really have many shake n vape recipes. And the ones I do have that are SnV approved, I had no taste for. Aside from citrus profiles and some berry profiles, should I be concerned with flavors tasting a bit off 3-4 months from now? I'm mostly just making big batches of my custards and creams; basically, stuff that needs to sit a week or two before it comes to life. I know that some juices age well, but I'm pretty sure there's a tipping point somewhere in the aging process where flavors begin to break down and become a muddled mess. To help alleviate this, I've kept EM and Cotton Candy out of all of my large batches and will add them whenever I pull from the large batch.

Oh no. What's the eta on that from personal experience?

Not too sure but I found a snv recipe for a strawberry peanut butter flavor. It recommended not letting it steep due to the PB fade. It was great at first but probably by the 2nd or 3rd week the PB taste faded into a kind of burnt peanut husk flavor.

Oh darn. I mixed 300ml of a juice with peanut butter in it right before another user told me peanut butter fades. I should've asked this question before I started. Hindsight is always 20/20.

You could try staged steeping err.. whatever its called when you mix only a certain set of flavors of a recipe and then add the other "faders" just before you're ready to use it. I've done this with my Strawberry Cheesecake recipe. Shisha Strawberry is my favorite right off the shake and up untill about 2 weeks. After that it becomes kinda dull. Obviously, the cheesecake base really only hits it stride right about then. I mixed 60ml's of the Cheesecake base and set it aside. I don't typically consume more than 30ml's of this in two weeks so I transfered 30ml's and added Shisha Strawberry. Waited til I finished that and went for round two. Super fast and perfectly optimised to my steeping preference. What flavors are you playing with? There often random concentrates that are faders.

That's actually a really good idea. I'm mainly worrying about things like FA White Peach, INW Peach, FA Fuji Apple, FA Bilberry, FW Blueberry, and FA Lemon Sicily fading into nothingness. They're supporting flavors in quite a few of my custards and creams.

I'd mix the white peach with tfa peach juicy at maybe a 2:1 ratio?

Edit: It's actually 3:1 ratio

TFA Peach Juicy tears my throat up

From my experience, faders of these are: FA Fuji (3rd week) FA Lemon Sicily (2nd week) To a certain degree, but not as drastic and I much perfer the faded profile: FA White Peach (2nd week)

Hope this helps

Gotcha. I guess I could always add a little of whatever fades out into my small bottles

is it possible to compensate for Lemon Sicily fading by adding a bit extra? Its probably my favorite lemon concentrate but its always disappointing when it fades. Especially when mixed with custards that take a month to really mature properly.

Most custard, creams, and tobaccos should be fine for an extended steep. Sounds like you are on the right track

I'm more worried about the supporting fruits dying off in the creams.

In general, creams get richer, fruits get weaker.

That's interesting. And I'm thinking this is more tricky than I've thought.

Yes, some fruits like berries would fade. I've made this lemonade recipe:

CAP Juicy Lemon 1%

FA Lemon Sicily 0.5%

FW Lemonade (Natural) 5%

TFA Raspberry Sweet 5%

CAP Sweet Strawberry 0.5%

TFA Sweetener 1%

As shake and vape, that thing scraped the insides of my throat. Taste was not bad, though. So I let it steep for a week. When I tried it again, it was smooth. But... the berry flavors were gone. So I added about 2% more of Raspberry sweet, and it was better.

But one can't over-simplify these. Other recipes like [Cliche] (https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/1383#cliche_by_skiddlzninja), from which I still have leftovers on a bottle mixed on 10/24/17, are still going strong. I mixed it using CAP Harvest Berry, and that can be tasted quite prominently.

Furthermore, I've had mixed results with FA Fuji Apple. I have some [Glass Apple] (http://e-liquid-recipes.com/recipe/435001/Glass%20Apple) mixed back in July 2017 (I kid you not...) which still tastes like apple to me. But, Cinnamon Roll Apple Danish? After a month, the apple note is gone.

Can't say how can that happen. There is no pattern here. I may have thought Ethyl Maltol, known for muting flavors, could be the one that is making things fade, but Glass Apple has flavorings with EM, and nothing happens... There might be something else, but I ignore the chemistry.

Maybe mix a large batch, let it steep a week or two, then shove it in the freezer? Then fill a 30-50ml bottle from the large batch and use that until it’s time to refill it with the freezer bottle?

I didn't even think about basically cryoteking my juice lol

Cap Sweet Strawberry fades

by RamboUnchainedover 7 years ago"I Bet I Could Clone That"

That one I'm aware of. It fades hard, too. It's bad enough that I can really only taste strawberries when I first mix a juice. I meant to throw some JF Sweet Strawberry in the mix in place of CAP SS when I made 350mL of Unicorn Milk earlier.

Yeah I add when everything else has steeped. I haven't tried jf cause I order from bcf and they don't have it. May have to get some though.

It's the bees knees. It holds up at least 3 weeks for sure. And it's one of the few strawberries that I can taste below 5%

Unfortunately, little attention is paid to a juice's best before date in comparison to its best after date. Imo you correctly suggest that a juice is at its best for relatively short period. Cooling can ward-off over steeping. I wouldn't forget the usefulness of the refrigeration in all this.
