White residue building up on bottle
submitted almost 8 years ago by aaroncoolguyMixologist

I've been making juice for more than a year and I've never seen this happen before. A white residue around my bottles where the juice is sitting at the top. This is happening in two different bottles but doesn't seem to be happening in my tank.

I read somewhere that the juice may be corroding the bottle itself but I've just never seen this happen and I'm wondering if I shouldn't vape this particular juice.

Is it just froth from bubbles rising to the top after shaking? If so it should mix back in easily but will reappear. With some flavors it won't fully disappear untill the juice is fully steeped.

That's what I thought but now it seems my juice has plastic corroded into it!

You could try mixing the same juice but in glass to see if you get different results.

I can't even remember which juice it was that frothed. Whichever one it was, it's not doing it now. So I doubt it's corrosion. It's just the bubbles rising to the top and leaving a rim. A quick shake disperses the bubbles

I transferred it over to a glass bottle and it does seem to be doing the same thing. Maybe there's still some plastic in it? However, I usually clean my bottles at least a day before mixing so they have the proper time to dry out. This particular mix I cleaned the bottles immediately before mixing. I did read that water in the mix can cause this bubbling effect. So maybe it could be that?

Turns out this is happening in glass bottles as well. Same type of look but it does seem to be more "bubbly" than plastic corrosion in the glass

You're right. I swapped to glass and the same thing is happening. I was reading about these "bubbles" (They don't quite have the same properties as bubbles I know) and it seems that is the case here. They are less intense this afternoon after about 15 hours in the glass bottles now.

ive had it before from a chocolate concentrate... can't remember which, but I don't reckon it's a problem...

Bottle is corroding is my guess. Friend had one bottle do this after 8-12 months of use. Swap em out.

The bottles have been used quite a lot. Looks like I might be vaping a little bit of plastic atm

HDPE (the clouded plastic) does not last as long as the PET (the clear plastic) bottles. Best yet of course is glass.

Always replace your bottles one every few months at least. There to cheap not to, and who knows what stuff could be breeding inside them..

Side note, If you happen to be using a flavor with Triacetin in my experience its been very hard on plastic bottles.

Pg is naturally antimicrobial so not much should be breeding in them.

I get that with brand new bottles sometimes. Mostly just desert flavors tho

Any flavors in particular? Do you still smoke it anyways? and does it stop after it's steeped for a bit?

You don't smoke your eJuice. You VAPE it, silly.

Yes I still vape it. No flavors in particular I don't think. Maybe very sweet flavors ?

Did you warm the bottles up? It's hard to tell from the picture, but I usually get a bit of a white froth in my bottles doing a warm bath for the shake. Happens with glass and plastic bottles.

1 points

by aaroncoolguyalmost 8 years agoMixologist

I didn't I always let my juices steep on their own besides shaking of course.

by Grorcoalmost 8 years ago

I don't warm it up trying to speed steep, just enough to make it easier to shake :). I messed up with my first order of nic and got VG, kept getting hot spots without doing it :(

I would get some glass bottles. Here's where I get mine: https://glassbottleoutlet.com

Thanks for that. I usually use Amazon for my bottles. I have a mess of glass bottles usually I store Nic in them. Have you used the glass unicorn bottles? The plastic unicorn have been my very favorite bottles for 3-4 years now. Should I convert to glass unicorn?

I've never used glass unicorn bottles, just glass droppers so I can't really say. For unicorn bottles I've been getting these:

https://www.amazon.com/dp/B071P9C3WY/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_apa_0OgqAbH0P91VX

...and they seem to work just fine (although they are a pain in the ass to remove the nozzle after you've used it). Glass or PET are pretty much the way to go. The softer plastics just break down too easily. And if you want UV protection as well you can go for a darker colored bottle. Let me know if you have anymore questions, happy to help.

Oh weird. Obvious questions: Are those a new batch of bottles? and did you rinse them out first? Are you using new or different pg, vg, or nic?

1 points

by aaroncoolguyalmost 8 years agoMixologist

The batch was brand new. and I did rinse them previously. I didn't change anything about Vg/Pg or nic. EDIT Come to think of it I did change the nic from 4.0 to 4.5 mg/ml maybe that's it? However I did use [this] juice and it contains Diacetyl but I figured what the hell I'd make one batch of it just to see if I even liked it. So I'm wondering if that stuff is that bad that it'll melt my bottle (which again, has never happened after 1+ year. But idk I transferred it into glass bottles and I'm going to see what happens _(--)/

I did some low-effort googling and the LDPE Wikipedia page says LDPE doesn't have an "excellent", but a "good" resistance (minor attack / very low chemical reactivity) to ketones. Diacetyl is a diketone, which is a class of ketones. Maybe someone who mixes with a lot of diacetyl can chime in about their experience with LDPE bottles?

Low-density polyethylene

Low-density polyethylene (LDPE) is a thermoplastic made from the monomer ethylene. It was the first grade of polyethylene, produced in 1933 by Imperial Chemical Industries (ICI) using a high pressure process via free radical polymerization. Its manufacture employs the same method today. The EPA estimates 5.7% of LDPE (recycling number 4) is recycled.

Any info on HDPE?

I remember I made a post about this a while ago, before I got banned from this subreddit. I made the argument(with a few scientists' opinions to back it up) that these bottles aren't necessarily safe to put e-juice in, for this exact reason... and that I was buying glass instead. I got chastized for this. But I really think people should heed the common sense warning... if you can see with your own eyes that your plastic is leeching... that means it has been leeching for long before that... and it's SLOWLY been leaching since day 1. Many of these chemicals are very close in structure to hormones in your body, like Estrogen. Your body in some cases mistakes these chemicals for estrogen. It can cause all sorts of problems in your body, and change you from the inside out(this has already been shown with some plastics).

I really wish people stopped defending these cheap plastic bottles, just because they are so invested in them themselves(and they don't want to admit that they've been putting plastic in their lungs for years, and encouraging others to do the same). New people should NEVER use these bottles, IMO. Get Glasss. If you want to be extra safe... switch your flavorings to glass too. Don't do hot water baths, as this only increases the rate at which the plastics leech.

The dangers of this haven't fully been studied. We know it is very bad to ingest these plastics. How bad? Could be absolutely horrible, and in 5 years we find out people are getting really messed up. Or they could find out it's not that bad, and it takes decades of normal use to have real side effects like Cancer/Mood Disorders. But, regardless, this is really not good for you... and there's no reason to risk it. Just remember, you can smoke cigarettes(which are VERY unhealthy) for MANY years before you get cancer/serious side effects. If these bottles are close to as negative on your health as cigarettes(a big assumption), then even then, you won't know how bad it was for 10-20 years of use. Considering vaping is new... we don't have many people who have been inhaling plastic for 20 years... so we really don't know the cumulative/long term effects of this.

Turns out the same exact effect is happening in the glass bottle. I swapped it right when I saw this happening and left it overnight.

Just about the same size / color / and consistency so it must be something within the juice.

I'm no friend to the plastic industry myself and agree with most of your points. The only thing I don't is your certainty that whatever that is, is leaching from plastic. I've seen that in glass bottles before too, just saying.

Btw I never reuse plastic bottles.

Sounds like precipitate from the mixing of different pH ingredients. Like the titrations you did in chemistry class.

What’s the recipe?

Why are those mixes so dark?

Don’t reuse plastic bottles. If you want to reuse bottles, buy glass.

Don’t “heat steep” your juice.

I make diy on a regular basis and i get this all the time in plastic and glass bottles. I notice it more if I give my mixes a prolonged aggressive shake after mixing and it's even more noticeable if I mix in an oversized bottle, say 50ml in a 100ml bottle. It leaves a white line around top of the juice which sticks too the bottle. Regularly turning the bottle upside down dissipates this but it can take from 3 too 7 days for it too completely disappear.

This mix is so dark because of the Coffee (TFA) that stuff is super thick and a really really dark brown. I've been using Coffee Cake (North West Flavors?) but I've found that it's a little sweeter than I wanted for my coffee mixes. Also this batch was made about 30 minutes prior so it hadn't had time to steep. I've found that over time the color dramatically lightens with these darker flavors. I do not "heat steep" any juice.

4mg nic (48mg/ml)

30% PG

70% VG

4% Coffee (TFA)

2% Butter Rum (LOR)

3% DX Caramel (TFA)

2.5% Glazed Donut (CAP)

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 8 years ago

Have you thought about not using TFA Coffee? I’ve never seen anyone use that successfully and definitely not as high as 4%.

That LA Butter Rum is a known flavor to crack tanks. I wouldn’t be surprised if it also compromised bottles.

DX Caramel Original contains corn syrup and shouldn’t really be vaped.

Yikes. This is my first time using the TFA Coffee and I don't love it, the coffee flavor really isn't that strong either. I purchased it not realizing what it was but figured I'd give it a try but have been hesitant. I've used the butter rum before and it has been okay in other mixes so I'm not too worried about that. How do you find out which flavors contain corn syrup? I don't see that information from the retailer. Would be nice to know in the future. In previous mixes I haven't seen anything strange about the caramel should I stop using it?
