December Monthly Clone Challenge
submitted almost 8 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Bah, humbug.

Are we doing this again? We are? Ok, here we go.

/u/yoopergeek is the MVP of the November Challenge and will be contacted about a small token of appreciation.

The purpose behind this monthly clone challenge is to gather the community behind an effort to clone just one juice.

The subject of this month's challenge is Taruto by Yami Vapor, which has been described as "one of the most stunning flavors released this year, presenting a warm flaky crust dessert filled with rich, smooth, and sumptuous custard. Taruto is the perfect representation of one of the most popular desserts in all of Europe and Asia, known throughout the world as a Portuguese Egg Tart or Dan Ta in Asia." It was requested by /u/chief6363.

Action Ralf has released his own take on this profile, but without trying it. Is it anything like the original? Someone who has tried both will have to weigh in.

A reminder from the previous clone challenge posts: You are perfectly welcome to completely ignore the cloning aspect of this challenge and just consider the juice description as a prompt to create a recipe all your own with that profile. In this case, that would be Dan Ta.

Please respond with recipes for Taruto by Yami Vapor, ideas about how to start an attempt to clone that flavor, your own delicious Portuguese Egg Tart recipe, general thoughts about having a monthly clone challenge, hate mail, love letters, lewd artwork, dirty limericks, comments, questions, concerns, anything remotely on topic. Thank you. Love you all.

I still need to leave a review for Action Ralf's take on this profile. I have tried the Nata liquid, AND Taruto, along side of each of these. I feel that CAP VC1 is in each of the commercial brands for sure. It's something I can normally taste outright. Nata and Ralf's are pretty similar (my own opinions on that I will keep to myself as I dont know the company and/or mixer for them). Taruto is also fairly similar, but there are slight nuances between them that I feel might be because of different ingredients/%'s. But to answer you /u/ID10-T Ralf's take is similar to the others, and I think there is a good reason.

I mixed up Ralf's recipe the day you posted this, and hot damn it's delicious, well layered, and keeps me coming back. Never had one of the Taruto or an Asian Custard Crossanwich thingy, but I suggest anyone interested in the profile give Ralf's recipe a mix.

any good ideas for a sub on rich cinnamon? Im assuming not... seems like that is the be all end all bakery cinnamon from what i hear. Maybe i could get away with using some CAP Cin Danish Swirl? Or would that be too far off?

by steevjayalmost 8 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

You can use CAP Cin Danish Swirl or leave it out Rich Cinnamon. It is very strong and only needs a drop or 2 per 30ml for my taste.

br4d24 do you have any FA Catalan Cream?

Pastéis de Nata

I'm going to mix this up tonight.

Biscuit (INAWERA) 1.00%

Catalan Cream (FA) 1.50%

Creme Brulee (INAWERA) 2.00%

Pie Crust (TPA) 2.00%

Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) 4.00%

Super Sweet (CAP) .5%

Yeah I have all those ingredients. I've been looking for something to use Catalan in. This one looks right up my alley haha.

This is a dan ta. I've eaten these a fair few times. Pretty popular dim sum dish. They have a very light crispy crust, and filled with a light eggy custard with a condensed milk type flavour. There are no heavy flavours in the real food. I haven't tried the OG juice but thought maybe this brief description of the food reference might help.

FA Custard 2%

TFA Vanilla Swirl 3%

TFA Graham Cracker (Clear) 5%

CAP Sugar Cookie V1 2%

If it doesn't taste close, I am willing to bet it will at least be tasty.

by Civinskoalmost 8 years ago

Ok, just mixed up:

FA Custard 3%

FW Graham Cracker 3.25% (the only one i had, all i had basically haha)

TPA Vanilla Swirl 2%

CAP Sugar Cookie 2%

TPA Cinnamon Spice 2d/30ml

Smells great!

Shake n' vape i taste almost nothing but a pleasant sweetness, but i have a cold so i can't really taste much.

Edit: After about 22h steeping and some furious shaking i'm getting a nice sweet crust, like a soft cookie, and a really subtle bakery cinnamon. Really pleasant and subtle flavor, i think it'll be closer if i added around 3~4% CAP VC1, but i'll let it sit for a couple more days try it again and probably throw in some caramel and a nutty tobacco (TPA DK/FA Glory, or maybe INW Dark for Pipe + 0.3~5% AP) and see what comes out.

Edit²: Maybe doing the recipe x1.33 is a good idea, but i would probably find it too sweet.

by Civinskoalmost 8 years ago

This sounds good, i'll mix this up with Custard and Vanilla Swirl % swapped. I feel like swirl tends to mute things higher than 2% and that little lemony touch from FA's Custard will work well.

Whenever i get back home i'll let you know how it is!

isn't there a bit of cinnamon in the commercial version? This looks super tasty though.

I've not had the original. I'm basing this on the flavor profile itself. Probably should've put a disclaimer.

Hey guys,

This is the custard tart recipe I've been working on. It's pretty good and imo better than alot of custard recipes on the market. Tried to create my own version of taruto using actionralphs initial recipe and tweaking a few components. I've been trying to replace the Cap Vanilla Custard in order to reduce steep times. Need to get my hands on the new FA custard. Once I do I'll tweak the rest of the recipe as necessary.

Would love your thoughts

Custard Tart

CAP Vanilla Custard - 4.5% TFA Toasted Marshmallow - 1.5% TFA Brown Sugar - 1% FW Dulce de leche - 1.5% INW biscuit - 0.75% TFA Butter - 0.25% CAP Cinnamon Danish swirl - 0.5% CAP Sugar cookie - 1% CAP Funnel cake - 1.5% TFA Pie Crust - 1.5% CAP Super Sweet - 0.25%

Thoughts without having tried something really aren’t worth the virtual paper they’re printed on, but I think you can swap custards all day and still not reduce steep time if you’ve got 1% TFA Brown Sugar in there. Not that that’s a bad thing, of my favorite recipes has 1% Brown Sugar in it, but I’m patient.

This is very true :) a philosophy I try to adapt to my daily life. Compared to an unsteeped CAP custard v1 mix, i don't seem to have an adverse taste to the initial mix using TFA Brown Sugar. It just gets better with time for me. Same goes for the FW Dulce de leche, it doesn't need an open air period for the alcohol to filter out as does the TFA Dulce de leche.

Dan tat has no cinnamon or any other spices. Just eggy sweet custard in a flaky crust- no spices or brown sugar. It's not a very complex flavor. I haven't tried the juice though.

3 points

by steevjayalmost 8 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

Yes you are correct that's where I get mixed up the Portuguese egg tarts evolved from "pastel de nata", a traditional Portuguese custard pastry that consists of a crème brûlée-like custard caramelized in a crust and some chefs do sprinkle with cinnamon. The Dan Tat (Asian) is as you described.

by collenchymaalmost 8 years ago

I guess we'd really need to try the original to be sure which one it's more like! I haven't tried a Portuguese egg tart.

u/collenchyma if you get a chance give my Pastéis de Nata a mix its really good.

by steevjayalmost 8 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

This is what I'm going to mix for the Asian version

Dan Tat

Biscuit (INAWERA) 1.00%

Dairy Milk (TPA) 1.50%

Custard (FA) 2.00%

Pie Crust (TPA) 2.00%

Vanilla Custard v1 (CAP) 4.00%

Super Sweet (CAP) .5%

What do ya think? I was thinking Dairy Milk because u/Jthectic had mentioned a condensed milk type flavor?

3 points

by Jthecticalmost 8 years ago

It's sort of the texture of condensed milk, not too much the flavour. I'd say its more of an eggy custard with a brittle texture to it that's like condensed milk.

2 points

by steevjayalmost 8 years agoProud Sidebar Reader!

Thanks that makes sense because when its prepared they use scalded milk.

dang havent tried that juice or id be down to give this a go. Anyone have flavor notes on the original juice.

by leirbag23almost 8 years ago

I'm sure there is banana cream in this one. It's the weirdest thing, I seem to be the only person who gets straight up banana cream from it. I looked for reviews, and I think the only time someone mentioned any banana in this, they described it as a subtle note, but it's by far the most dominant flavor for me.

And holy cow this thing is SWEET. Like lung diabeetus levels of sweetness.

To me it legitimately tasted like 7.5% Capella VC V1, with another 7.5% TPA Banana Cream, and at least 5% sweetener. I know this isn't very helpful, but I hated this juice.

Lung diabeetus? Not descriptive enough.

Any chance you're especially sensitive to Banana Cream?

2 points

by leirbag23almost 8 years ago

It's quite possible. I'm just not a fan of banana flavors at all, mostly because my early DIY experience involved an unhealthy amount of TPA Ripe Banana.

by br4d24almost 8 years ago

haha before i did diy i had a similar bad experience with banana flavored juices... they were all ~~pretty~~ really horrible (this was about 4 years ago). Having 1 30ml of a horrible banana cream, and no other juice options till next payday gave me banana vape ptsd. Havent had a banana vape since.

0.75% (INW) Biscuit

1% (TPA) Brown Sugar

0.25% (TPA) Butter

1% (CAP) Cinnamon Danish Swirl

0.75% (FLV) Cookie Dough

1.5% (FW) Dulce De Leche

1.5% (CAP) Funnel Cake

1.5% (TPA) Pie Crust

0.25% (CAP) Super Sweet

1.5% (TPA) Toasted Marshmallow

4.5 % (CAP) Vanilla Custard

Pastéis de Nata AKA Portuguese Custard Tarts.

This recipe came about after seeing Grimm Green review a juice called 'Taruto', it sounded delicious but being from Australia, I wasn't able to find it without paying exorbitant shipping costs; thus I decided to try and make my own take on the profile.

NOTES:

TPA PIE CRUST / CAP FUNNEL CAKE / INW BISCUIT / TPA BUTTER This is the base for the butter pastry cup. They all mix together well to create a nice flaky, all butter, decadent pastry for the custard to sit on.

CAP VAN CUSTARD / CAP CDS / FW DULCE DE LECHE / FLV COOKIE DOUGH This is obviously the custard filling, the vanilla custard, dulce de leche and cookie dough create a nice dense custard with caramel notes, having the vanilla custard at such a high percentage means the eggy notes are pretty obvious and up there which is what I wanted, however adds a lot to the steep time. The Dulce de Leche adds more of a sweetened milkiness to the custard, it adds a brightness and really boosts it into something delicious and unique. The Cinnamon Danish swirl is there to add the cinnamon, is also adds a bit of fluffiness to the pastry base. I would have just gone with FLV Rich Cinnamon instead of CDS, however I don't have it, give it a try?

TPA BROWN SUGAR / TPA TOASTED MARSHMALLOW This works with the cookie dough and toasted marshmallow to create a caramelized and 'burnt sugar' taste to the custard, like it's fresh out of the oven. The toasted marshmallow was also added to fluff everything out and provide the nice mouth feel you get from the recipe.

Give this bad boy at least a 10 day steep to let the custard really come together.

As always, constructive criticism is always welcome.

To all you ppl trying to do Portuguese custard tarts. They don't have vanilla in them.

If you find any recipe from that tarts online that they add vanilla in them, its just a baker trying to be fancy. I repeat, if you guys are going for authenticity remove the vanilla taste.

These are the ingredients that go on the cream: Sugar, water, flower (for thickness), milk and eggs with a lemon peel during the boiling process. As for the pastry, its just flower, water and butter. That's it.

I hope it points out you ppl in the right direction. Here's a picture of some that i baked myself to get you guys inspired, cheers: https://scontent.flis9-1.fna.fbcdn.net/v/t1.0-9/20915540_1627687803929581_6696876243655954928_n.jpg?oh=b4eace3fd26975b7a05acee3ca14499c&oe=5A770E19

Wish I had time to frequent reddit more, maybe I would have seen this thread. As a side note, wf Butter tart SC is one of the best pastry flavours I have ever tried.

I will start by saying I haven't tried these recipes posted in this thread. I did mix up Waynes remix and it is in the wheelhouse, but not close enough. I do have some Taruto here (I picked up a 100 mil that I got half price for buying a mod) and it does have Banana in it. It tastes like Banana Foster. When I first smelled Taruto first thing I thought of was Bananas Foster. Not sure if its TFA BF or FW BF (I don't have the FW version to test until I can get another order in). Taruto is full of sweetener like 3-4% or maybe more FW Sweetener. 3 tanks full in my Bravo rta and the wicks and coils are black, not normal darkened like traditional custards but coal black. Hope this helps.

  1. Wrong thread. https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/7gukhw/monthly_clone_request_thread_december_2017/ is the right one. But if you wait until tomorrow, there'll be a new monthly clone request thread and you'll get more eyes on it posting there.

  2. Never tried Fluft but 6% LA Lemonade + 3% FA Kiwi + 3% TFA Raspberry Sweet sounds pretty good to me, at least as a starting place.
