Alpine Drops
submitted almost 8 years ago by EdibleMalfunction

This is an attempt at recreating Ricola Dual Action cough drops in vape form.

“Our unique blend of ten natural Swiss alpine herbs, natural menthol, and soothing syrup center, combine to give you fast, safe relief you can trust”

If you haven’t had these cough drops, the sweet honey-lemon outer-shell tastily gives way to an intense mentholated, soothing herbal syrup center.

I am obviously not using ten different herb concentrates here, but I don’t find all of them necessary to impart the flavor of the product here. A few of them listed in the ingredients list of the drops are probably there for their medicinal properties. Instead, I’m just going to include the ones responsible for pushing that signature Ricola herbal flavor.

Props to u/CheebaSteeba for giving me a good start for my recipe with his Lemon Cough Drop mix.

INW Eucalyptus With Mint: Eucalyptus is not an included ingredient in Ricola drops. However, it’s scent is still a dead ringer for them, and we know how well a fit this flavor is for vaping when you are under the weather. It’s icy as shit cooling properties are perfect here.

JF Juicy Lemon: You can’t have lemon cough drops without the lemon, and this one fits the mold perfectly.

FLV Honey Bee: The perfect honey flavor for this recipe. This is not generic supermarket honey that has had all of its beneficial florals removed. This is more akin to raw honey straight from a hive. This is a very strong flavor so we only want to use a bit of it, but it also needs a few days to mellow out. I actually prefer it without a steep. That may bee beecause I am a raw honey fanatic.

TPA Horehound: One of the ingredients in Ricola’s herbal blend. Imparts the anise flavor to the recipe.

FLV Elderflower: While not the best Elderflower flavor as far as authenticity goes, it works fine enough as a floral for its use in the mix.

  • INW Eucalyptus with Mint @ 1.5 %

  • JF Juicy Lemon @ 3.0 %

  • FLV Honey Bee @ 0.5 %

  • TPA Horehound @ 0.5 %

  • FLV Elderflower @ 0.25 %

This was the first iteration of this recipe and I honestly probably won’t change anything. It’s dead on for the profile and leaves me craving it, even though I am no longer sick and did not add nicotine. I am quite surprised how well the vape translated that icy herbal mixture the lozenges are known for having.

Mix it up, buy some Ricola Dual Action Drops and let me know what you think!

INW E&M is a godsend for a sore throat... 1.5% though? Do you want to die of hypothermia? I’m pretty sure that’s how you die of hypothermia.

No way. It’s amazing. I’m fairly certain the norm for solo is 3%.

I vape it 3% when I'm sick. It makes it possible for me to breathe through my nose without the side effects of decongestants.

I don't think I could do 1.5% without first having stuffed up sinuses. It really is strong stuff.

I vape it solo anywhere from 2 to 4 % even when I'm not sick. Sometimes I throw in a little fruit or sweet shit, but usually just solo. 4% is awesome when it's shitty weather and I'm huddled by the heater

:D Interesting recipe, sounds tasty and refreshing! I own a grand total of one of those flavors, but I like the profile so I think I might play the subbing game and see where I end up.

I never would have ordered it were it not for this idea. Now the ideas for other uses are flowing

Works great with strong, dark berries. Also pairs nicely with Hibiscus.

I never in my life thought I'd be buying horehound to vape. You're going to make me do it. Lol

<<adds TFA Horehound to wish list>>

Looks great Ed! Like something that would be perfect to vape when I'm just starting to get sick and when I'm starting to recover, so I only have to do the 3% Euc w/mint thing right in the middle when I can't breathe at all without it.

Thanks for the share. DIY community needs good menthol recipies.

It looks interesting. Unfortunately, I don't have Horehound or Honeybee. And pretty sure I don't have juicy lemon either.

Come to think of it, I better check to see which elderflower I have, too... yeah... maybe not this recipe any time soon

So...steep time?

Depends on how strong you like your honey. Good to go right away, or you can wait 3-4 days.

Will CAP Juicy Lemon work maybe?

You can try. JF Juicy Lemon is definitely my preferred lemon. CAP’s may be a bit sweeter, but that could work in the recipe’s favor.

Any clue if this recipe will hold up pretty well to a long steep? I know it's a new one but maybe you have an insight about how the individual flavors age. It would be nice to mix a big bottle that just sits in my steeping cabinet unless I am actually sick. Since I can't predict when that might happen it could be sitting there for 6 months or longer until I need it. I haven't been sick since I quit smoking but I can see vaping being pretty uncomfortable. I can also see myself running out and buying stinkies if I don't have something I can tolerate!

I don’t think any recipe is going to hold up well after 6 months. But considering the weird flavors involved and the mint/menthol of the eucalyptus, I’m going to say that probably wouldn’t last.
