Higher PG mixes
submitted almost 8 years ago by MattyMc89

I’ve been vaping for about 4 years and have been mixing for about a year now. None of my mixes are amazing in taste. Even the one shots aren’t that impressive.

I’ve followed countless recipes and made my own tweaking percentages higher and lower and still no impressive liquids. Only decent one shot I’ve found which is my ADV is Vampire Vapes Heisenberg.

I make my mixes 60PG/40VG as I’m a MTL vaper and the coils I use are 1.5ohm. I’m wondering if mixing my liquids with a higher PG is causing this lack of flavour in my mixes?

PG/VG Ratio doesn't have that much to do with flavour as people think.

I'm pretty sure it's just "old lore" from the days when our tanks sucked and high-VG wouldn't wick as well.

I've made many of my mixes in both high VG for dripping as well as 70PG for MTL and I don't bother tweaking the flavour %.

Not sure why you can't get good flavour. Maybe post a few recipes you've tried and been disappointed with?

I wish I could upvote this 100x. Such old incorrect information that never seems to go away.

Like the other guy said, PG is the flavor carrier and provides throat hit. VG produces thicker vapor and a subtle hint of sweetness.

If you've tried several recipes, I'm willing to bet that you quite enjoy sweetener and few diy recipes use much of it. Commercial juice is often loaded with it. Try playing around with various sweeteners and citric acid.

But he said he enjoys Heisenberg. Which does not have a lot of sweetener. It has a lot of INW Grape, a dash of toilet cleaner some secret undisclosed deadly poison and a hint of Menthol. Oh and a drop of Anise.

Funny enough it is quite nice from time to time, a bit like the (in)famous Grack Juice.

I've always understood it that VG makes dense clouds and pg carries better flavor. That and the viscosity differences.

What coil are you using? Maybe try lower ohm, less air flow, cool value with a coil with more surface area.

Not a bad idea. Using a 1.5ohm coil in the Endura T20. I’ll have to look into a lower coil and see if Innokin supply them.

You also have to consider that creamy types of juice absolutely will be better with more vg. It makes them more "heavy", like you'd expect in a cream.

I haven't personally tasted a massive difference in 50/50 vs 70/30, only the smoothness. Tastes the same to me. Maybe my pallets are fucked, who knows.

I think 50/50 is a way of ‘trying’ to accommodate for the MTL Vapers but I find it still ruins my coil. Branded 50/50 tastes the same as any other mix but it still effects a MTL coul.

Do you let your mixes ripe (or steep as they say) for the recommended amount of time? Creams will need a lot of time until they are pleasurable. Fruits can be shake and vape but for the chemicals to blend together nicely it just needs some time and in my opinion 2 weeks at least and shake them up every day if you can. Put them away in a dark cool spot.

Yeah I let them steep and leave them in a dark place. I’ve never mixed cream liquids only fruits. I tend to make between 150 - 200ml batches at a time.

The first DIY recipes I really enjoyed were the Strap-ons from ID-10T, especially the spiney dragon strap, which consists of the Strap On:

  • 3% FA Strawberry

  • 3% FA Watermelon

  • 2% FA Fuji

plus

  • 2% TPA Dragon Fruit
  • 0,25% INW Cactus

Maybe you should try a different tank sometime?

This sounds almost identical to my DIY experience, my ADV is also VV Heisenberg, and I vape fruity flavours. Of the 100 or so recipes I've made, not a single one has had a great deal of flavour, the best was Looma (https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/3f4xmc/lets_make_looma_a_simple_recipe_that_well_dive/). Are there any e-liquids you used to like prior to DIYing?

I'd like to be able to tell you the solution but I haven't found it myself. I've given up on recipes and started buying concentrates (Heisenberg, VV Berries is also nice and a strong flavour). Tried a few of the one shots from DarkStar (which weren't that impressive, and seem to gunk my coils quite quickly compared to the VV concentrates).

I wonder why its amazing for some and just alright for others.....

Cheers for the recipe list! I think I still have some of those flavours kicking around somewhere. My problem was that I could barely taste any of my recipes no matter what percentage I made them at and if i could taste them they are just ‘ok’ and not worth the effort in making another batch. I lost count of how many times i mixed Strawberry Ripe and couldn’t taste it.

Prior to DIY I used to vape a lot of VV flavours as they had the higher PG and before them I used VIP as they had an even higher PG!!! I have a DTL device but rarely use it.

I haven’t tried dark star concentrates but I’ve have tried countless others, Money Shot, Kaveman, Chefs Flavours, Nom Nomz, DIY OR DIE, Totally Wicked, V-Juice and a few more and they seem weak or the flavour isn’t as amazing as described in the reviews. A lot of these also ruined my coil within a few days. I’m going to attempt the Alchemist Cupboard concentrates and see what they’re like. Have you tried them?

Sounds like you have the “Can’t taste strawberry gene”. It’s a thing, if you search reddit you will find others complain of this.

100% have the “Cant taste strawberry gene” along with every other flavour it seems. I made separate batches ranging from 1% to 30%. Still no flavour. It must have been from starting smoking at an early age.....at least thats what I put it down to.

If you enjoy Heisenberg, you should definitely try to mix Grack Juice. It has a similar profile...
