I heard Wayne refer to a study that suggested while diacetyl may be present in eliquids, it's below the safe limit for inhalation or something. He couldn't find the link so just wondering if there's any more info on it?
Try here
Although the study cites only vaping 3ml's of liquid a day which is outdated for what is now closer to 10-30ml's a day for most vapers.
Most? Really?
Not questioning you, but I think I'm questioning you. Are most vapers doing 10-30 ml/day?
raises hand
If I'm not mistaken, there was more diacetyl in the cigarettes I used to smoke each day than there is in the quantity of liquid I vape in a week or two. No study on diacetyl or formaldehyde is complete without comparing it relatively to the quantities vapers were otherwise formerly consuming through tobacco. (Non-former-smokers should not be vaping.) By that criteria, I do not so strongly care what the measurement is, just that it does not approach cigarette or popcorn factory worker exposure levels.
I work at a vape shop in the midwestern US. The majority of people I encounter go through that much and I've seen some use more. Of course this is more of the middle ground. Of course, people that still run Nautilus and Kayfun style tanks don't get close to that 10ml mark.
I don't know about most, but I do know that devices have become more powerful and tanks/RDA's have become clapton coil juice guzzlers. Even newbies are being started on these devices now (long gone are the days of the CE4, which by the way, produce far more carbonyls than modern attys).
So, yeah, I don't think 10mL is unreasonable at ALL even for modest vapers. As for me, I chain vape all day and can go through 30mL.
Now does that scare you? It shouldn't because I smoked 2 PAD for about 20 years. I will take my chances with 20-30mL of liquid over 40 cigs a day.
FWIW, as someone who used to smoke over a pack of reds a day, I personally can tell you that diacetyl enhanced liquids allow me to breathe 100 times better than cigs ever did... I can sleep at night without waking up gasping for air, I can handle strenuous activity without my lungs feeling like they are full of needles, and I don't wheeze when I breathe anymore. My most recent doc visit yielded excellent results in blood pressure and heart rate after roughly a half hour of different physical activities.
I'm not sure what study you're referring to, but it isn't like we're breathing straight butter vapor for 8-12 hours a day with a smoke break here and there, such as the workers in the popcorn factories that suffered from COPD.
Again, take that FWIW, but I will tell you we ain't scared of no diketones here. If you still have worries, they make DX and V2 versions of almost everything.
Further info might come up on a google search, but if you search the sub for diketones, popcorn lung, or D/A/AP, you will likely find similar discussions.
This is the one (part two here)here from Altria. I found it on Greg Conley's FB where Dr. Farsalino's chimed in and said he was able to produce the same results.
Would this be relevant? (not mine, copied it form a Facebook post).
Diacetyl is the chemical component that causes popcorn lung, yes. It is an artificial butter flavor. Yes, there is Diacetyl in a ton of e-liquid. So yes, e-liquid contains a chemical that causes popcorn lung. However... There have only been 6 cases of popcorn lung in the history of the planet. All six people worked full time at a popcorn manufacturing plant. They worked 8 hour days 5 days a week for 15 years before they inhaled enough micrograms of Diacetyl to develop popcorn lung. About a year ago 99% of e-liquid on the market was tested for Diacetyl. The most potent juice, having the most Diacetyl, was, lets just call them 'Brand X'. Even though 'Brand X' had a relatively high Diacetyl content in comparison to the rest of the market, here is the fun part... you would have to vape 60mls, aka 2oz, aka a TON (almost impossible amount, the average is 2-20ml a day) of their liquid, EVERDAY for 1.5 MILLION YEARS, in order to accumulate the amount of micrograms of Diacetyl it takes to develop popcorn lung. It is literally impossible. A simple cigarette, one single cigarette contains 750xs the amount of Diacetyl that there is in a full bottle of 'Brand X', and no one has ever gotten popcorn lung from cigarettes. Lets compare... National average smoker, 1 pack a day, 20 cigarettes. 750 x 20 = 15,000 If a full bottle last three days... 15,000 x 3 Based on averages, smoking cigarettes contain 45,000xs more Diacetyl than vaping. So yeah, vaping can cause popcorn lung. You'd just had to vape every second of every day for 1.5 MILLION years. Numbers simply do not lie.
I vape probably 20-30ml on any given day. I carry three mods with 5ml tanks and refill each at least 3 times a day. I don't run high wattage (30watts is my normal power levels). My normal mix is 70/30 vg/pg.
I'm wondering how you can carry three mods; Backpack, holster..... HUGE pockets? Kidding of course. (I have 2-4 working devices on me unless running errands)
