It's the flavor of the week, not a Sad Bronx Cheer: Blue Raspberry!
submitted almost 8 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

This week's flavor is: BLUE RASPBERRY

How did that get to be the FOTW?

It was requested. If you're not interested in this FOTW, please take this opportunity and comment to suggest one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that).

Past FOTW posts can be found here

Might get roasted for how high the flavoring percentage is, but it was the only way I could get this to where I wanted it. This is what I like to call “Blitz” and it’s my ADV:

FW Blue Raspberry: 13%

FW Hard Candy: 5%

TFA Raspberry Sweet: 3%

FW Sweetener: 3%

FW Sour: 1.5%

Ever try Ooo Blue Raspberry? Know how it would compare to FW Blue Raspberry?

3 points

by RealParrotalmost 8 years agoMixologist

Unfortunately not, although I have heard pretty positive things about it. Just keep in mind, FW Blue Raspberry is a very weak flavor imo, that's why I bumped it to 13%, otherwise it was getting drowned by the hard candy. If the Ooo BR isn't too weak, you could more than likely try this with it sitting between 8-10%

I just whipped this up last night using the recommended 8% subbing with OoO Blue Raspberry and it was delicious! I'm not usually one for putting sweetener, but for a blue raspberry hard candy type of ADV the extra bit of sweetness actually goes perfect. This might be a new ADV for me too. Thanks for that!

That’s awesome to hear man, glad you liked it! I’m not a sweetener guy myself either, but I definitely feel like this wouldn’t be as good without it.

Also interesting to note, I find the first couple of hits to have a strong throat hit but not harsh. After the first couple of hits, it turns perfectly smooth with the blue raspberry candy background.

This looks tasty! Gonna mix it up tomorrow. Can I sub FW sour for TFA do you reckon? And FW sweeteners is a blend of sucralose and EM isn't it?

1 points

by RealParrotalmost 8 years agoMixologist

I would imagine TFA would be fine. Not sure about the EM, but I do know it’s sucralose based.

What's the steep time on this bad boy dude?

Just mixed this up, on a shake and vape it tastes great! I’d personally drop the hard candy down as it seems to overpower the over flavours. Will experiment, thanks!

For an easy Blue Raspberry:

  • TFA Raspberry Sweet @ 6.0%

  • TFA Peach (Juicy) @ 2.0%

Sound weird? Yes. How the hell does adding Peach to raspberry make blue raspberry? I have no idea. But it does.

I tried this a few times and never really got a blue raspberry out of it.

Same here. I don't taste it either.

I will be mixing this up tonight. Not the simple version, the ATF recipe.

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 8 years ago

Excellent. That sounds good right now and I haven’t mixed it in awhile. However, I’m sick as a dog, so I should probably mix something minty AF.

INW Eucalyptus with Mint 3%.

I have been eyeballing this recipe for a couple of weeks. I have to wait until I get some CAP Jelly Candy. I am waiting until BCF restocks all the flavors that were already out when I placed my Black Friday order though.

LB Blue Rasp is pretty good. Decent candy type but on the weaker side of things. I use it between 4-8%. Can def be overtaken in recipes by more potent concentrates.

Still messing around with RF SC Blue Raz, I like it mixed with FA juicy strawberry.

3 points

by vdarkstarvalmost 8 years ago

This one is definitely my favorite Blue Rasp. I'm guessing its on the weaker side cause of the high VG content. I mix it at 9%.

1 points

by Lulzorralmost 8 years ago

LB Blue Raspberry reminds me a lot of the blue raspberry blowpops. I imagine mixing some of it with WF sour blue raspberry candy would hit the profile nicely.

This is the best blue raspberry I've come across. Mixed it up at 10% solo as recommended in the flavour review. Candied, heavy on the raspberry with a definite "blue". It's quite a warm, sweet and hard candy type flavour with some good tartness. It really hits the spot for me.

Okay, I have to ask, as much as it might make me sound like a new mixer.

What is different, generally speaking, from raspberry and blue raspberry?

6 points

by ID10-Talmost 8 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

It depends on who you're asking. Wars have been fought over that question.

Probably the best answer to that question is given in /u/concreteriver's review of FW Blue Raspberry: "I liken Blue Raspberry to pornography: I know it when I see/taste it."

Crap.

I saw white bark raspberry flavor somewhere, now I can't remember where. Or even who put it out. I think it was INW but it could have been GL.

I use FW blueberry and FA raspberry to get a pretty authentic blue razz, have a recipe for a blue razz jolly rancher people seem to like.

by mlNikonalmost 8 years ago

There isn't blueberry in blue raspberry people, y'all are crazy!

2 points

by skavengercloudsalmost 8 years ago

Then what makes the raspberry blue?

2 points

by juthincalmost 8 years ago

Blue food coloring.

The actual flavor is from the white bark raspberry, which is more of a purple color when ripe.

Anyone try Wonder Flavour Sour Blue Raspberry Candy yet? I ordered a bottle to try and was hoping for a little insight into how everyone was using it.

2 points

by threeswordstylexalmost 8 years ago

I have it. I enjoy a ton of WF's offerings but this one isn't really one of them. It is actually pretty sour tho but just not my favorite blue raspberry flavor. For what it's worth i have seen people saying they enjoy it a lot more than I do.

2 points

by king_cheefer_420almost 8 years ago

Well I’m hoping it won’t need too much help and I can turn it into something awesome.

Ah sorry I forgot

I don't know about this one. It's weak, takes at least 7% to really fill out, and then it has this slightly floral soapy thing coming out. It reminds me of laundry soap. As I vape on it longer that laundry soap thing becomes less and less noticeable and the flavor becomes more enjoyable, but when I take a break from it and return, laundry soap is back. There's bound to be a way to cover that up in a mix but I don't know what it is other than you definitely don't want to get any flavors that lean toward floral or soapy anywhere near it. That laundry soap is coming in right on top of the exhale so covering it up would have to be something that hits there rather than later.

I might never use it. If I want blue raspberry flavor, OSDIY Blue Ras Slushie gets the job done without any BS.

I got a 15ml of it somewhere. Tried it a few times. It tastes exactly as described; a sour blue raspberry hard candy.

I found mixing mango flavors with it was really delicious.

I realize this post is super old- But I'm new to this subreddit and someone pointed me to these threads, and now I'm browsing.

Anyways, my GF absolutely loves this flavor, though I found it's not super sour. Sort of has that artificial flavor that Blue Raspberry candy has. Add it in equal parts to WF Hard Candy and it tastes just like a Jolly Rancher. To me it's a bit dry, but I may be doing something wrong.

Thank you! Did you check out the link that lists all of the past ones?

Mmmm hmmm. I did. There's so many different combinations, opinions, and notes for the featured FOTW. I'm seeing uses for flavors that I would never have thought out - very clever and inventive uses from the mixers here. I will explore more.

It's also nice that a there is a Part 2 for certain FOTW. I see that your beloved Mango get's a second chance to shine 😆

I’ve been toying with CAP Cranberry with Sweet Raspberry for the tart profile. Around 0.5-1% Cranberry seems enough. Still not even close to my favourite commercial juice.

AirFactory BlueRazz is made from the following flavors...

000 BlueRazz Square Candy 000 Cherry Chewy Candy 000 Banana Chewy Candy 000 Pineapple Candy 000 Marshmallow Vanilla

Non disclosures keep me from adding percentages..

I’ve never tried it but no wonder so many people love it, that Marshmallow Vanilla is so good

by ParabolonKiddalmost 3 years ago

The longer the 000 Marshmallow Vanilla steeps, the better it gets.. Many commercial companies use it in their recipes, it will smoothen out even the harshest of recipes.
