Wrote up some quick and easy notes from Fresh03's Custard video (bunch of custard flavor notes for beginners)
submitted almost 8 years ago by br4d24

The FOTW custard edition is archived so i can not post on it, so i will post here. First things first though:

Subscribe, like and support Fresh03's youtube channel and watch his video for a more through and in depth take on these notes. Hes a super awesome dude with sooo much helpful info that he never hesitates to share. He deserves all the love!

Be sure to check out the video for more in depth notes: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDfh3hpvFlo

His ELR Recipes: http://e-liquid-recipes.com/?filter=14617

Please let me know if there are any typos or any other issues, i can edit it and fix it. Please keep in mind that your flavor tests might have different results than fresh03's, everyone has a different pallet and sometimes two people will taste the same flavor completely differently, so these notes arent set in stone law, but just fresh03's take on things (which imo are pretty accurate, hes never led me astray so far)

THE NOTES:

  • Cap Vanilla Custard v1 - The best rich eggy custard. Has lots of depth and richness. Single flavor 8-10% 2 week steep. Buttery notes, strong eggyness, can be used in bakeries around 1-2% and it adds a nice buttery eggyness (when used as an additive/at low %'s the steep time slightly decreases).

  • TFA vanilla custard - inoffensive, not overly eggy. Not as rich as CAP. Works well as a blending agent. Tastes like a vanilla pudding/Jello. Has some butteryness. Nice creamyness and mouth feel. Middle of the road custard.

  • CAP Vanilla Custard v2 - not really worth it compared to their v1, better daap free custards out there. Its a usable alternative if you want a DAAP free custard recipe but there are better alternatives.

  • Fa Custard - has lemon/citrus note like a sharp lemon zest. Works really well with fruits. The citrus note pushes bright notes of Berry's and apples. Perfect for lemon custard, blueberry custards ext. Good for bakery's to add a nice lemon zest along with custard. DAAP free

  • Fa Custard 3.14 - same as fa custard but stronger jucy lemon note. Hard to get in North America. Kind of a European exclusive flavor. Works amazing for lemon tart type recipes.

  • Flv Vanilla Custard - great middle of the road custard. Slight spice and a slight eggyness to it. Not the best at anything but very good at everything. A bit pricey but worth it.

  • Flv Custard - like van custard by flv, without the vanilla. Richness eggyness and a creamy mouthfeel.

  • TFA DX Vanilla Custard - DAAP free version of TFA van custard, it's horrible. Lost all of its personality. A creamy vanilla mess. If you want a daap free custard like the TFA custard just use TFA van swirl ( but be careful, it mutes stuff easily)

  • TFA Vanilla Swirl - nice vanilla cream flavor, very versatile and useful for blending. Careful, it can mute flavors easily. Very versatile to use in recipes. Almost like a creamy pudding vanilla flavor. Recommends CAP Vanilla Whipped Cream as a better alternative to TFA Vanilla Swirl.

  • FW Vanilla custard - has a light spiciness to it that's hard to place (nutmeg?). It's creamy and vanilla, not too much custard to it. Doesn't compare to most other custards, underwhelming in comparison. Probably one you could skip. Very light flavor, not much mouth feel.

  • Inw Custard - really nice eggyness, really nice richness, nice mouthfeel and cream. Not as good as van custard v1 but has a super short steep time that makes up for it. 3 day minimum steep which makes its nice to work with compared to other custards that need 2 weeks minimum. Short steep time is a massive advantage to this flavor. It trades some richness, eggyness, and mouthfeel for a shorter steep time, which is worth it. Stronger flavor than cap custard 1.5-2% recommended range. Approx 1% inw custard = 4% CAP Vanilla Custard v1 2% = 8% its approximately a 1:4 ratio.

  • Inw Creme Brulee - basically the same deal as their custard, but it hast has a toasty note that helps create the brulee'd effect quite well. VERY GOOD FLAVOR!

  • RF Cinnamon Custard - very good. Nice right off the bat but benefits with a long steep. If VG version you need to really heat treat your mixed recipe to about 120F and shake the shit out of it. Month steep.

  • Molinberry Custard - eggy, rich, lovely custard. Available in USA now. On the level of cap van custard v1. Needs a decent steep but not super long compared to other custards. Such nice richness and creamyness to it. Sweet. Bit pricey but very worth it.

  • OoO Custard - similar to inw custard in terms of steep time. Trades richness and eggyness for short steep time. Still A really nice custard for its shorter steep time. Middle of the road custard.

  • WF Vanilla Ruyan Custard - nice custard with a slight tobacco note

  • WF Coconut Custard - like the creamy filling of a coconut cream pie, quite a nice nice flavor.

  • Purilium Vanilla Custard - more like a pudding than a custard but it's really nice. Slight eggyness with lots of nice richness. Good if you don't want a strong eggyness. About a 2 wk steep like most other custards.

  • OoO Vanilla Custard Cheesecake - has a nice cheesecake note and graham note. Good right of the bat. Works great with TFA Cheesecake (graham) to add a nice cheesecake creamy richness.

  • Flv Vanilla Pudding - super tasty vanilla pudding flavor. Just like a vanilla pudding from the store. As it steeps it ramps up its richness. Very accurate to it's name. No eggy notes in this one.

  • Flv Brulee - not a creme brulee, just the toasted crust of a creme brulee. Works as an additive. Adds a toastyness burnt note to a custard

#####Best overall custard: Cap Vanilla custard v1 (if you can stand the steep time)

#####Best quick custards for short steep time:

Inw custard, or inw creme brulee, or OoO custard or creme brulee.

#####Best for a fruit custard: FA custard

#####Best for bakery's: Molinberry vanilla custard or cap vanilla custard v1

Extra Custard Tip:

Dont give up on your custard recipes, if they dont taste good after 2 weeks dont toss your batch. Sometimes certain custards take a looooong time to fully mature. Sometimes it takes 1 month, sometimes 3 months, sometimes even up to 6 months. According to fresh, if your custard is still tasting crappy after 6 months then its safe to toss it. But its important to not give up on your custard mixes early, because sometimes after a long steep they turn can turn into an amazing vape.

Thanks for taking the time to make this list, it might help new mixers make more informed purchases for sales going on now.

Just an fyi, you have FLV Vanilla Pudding twice on the list. You also might consider linking to Third World Custard on ATF.

Edit: I've been vaping on /u/EdibleMalfunction 's Custard Now recipe, which I think is a great representation of how to use INW Custard to create a rich, satisfying custard vape with almost no steep time. Here's the recipe if you haven't tried it https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/73934

This is why I love the DIY folks here! Thank you for this amazing write up! It also explains why a couple of the recipes I've found online with TPA Van Swirl get muted after a long steep. Time to lower the percentage and try again with them. Thanks again so much for this write up!

Excellent write up. Thanks a mill for this. Really appreciate it when someone goes to the effort of putting together valuable info that helps other people. Respect. p.s. still getting used to inw custard. Tastes lovely but the mouthfeel can be somewhat dry.

Ok, nice data here ;). Do you have info about those companies? Witch of those actualy make aromas from the start and which are redistribute them?

Pretty sure they are all flavor houses that make original concentrates from scratch. CAP and TFA are OG flavor houses that have been around for quite a while, they usually make flavorings that are used in the 1-10% range in a mix (varies from flavor to flavor). I think CAP and TFA were originally flavor companies making stuff for baking, soaps, and other industries that use aroma concentrates but cap is especially starting to market more towards the ecig industry. One on one(OoO) and flavorah (FLV) are newer-ish flavor houses that seem to develop most of their flavors specifically for vaping. FLV tends to produce some very strong concentrates used in the 0.1% - 2% range. One on one seems to make most of their stuff so it can be vaped as a one shot, but have some really banging flavors that work well in mixes also. FW is also an OG flavor house but they are geared more towards candy making flavorings and seem to have stuck to that industry mainly (they have some amazing flavorings that work wonder in vaping though). I'm sure some other vapers in here could probably give you more detailed Info but that's what I know off the top of my head.
