With GremlinDIY's excellent Black Friday – Cyber Monday sale (35% off, coupon code "gremlin", which turned my $115 order into a $75 one), about half of my 22-flavor order was to restock a number of flavors I was starting to run low on, with the rest being new flavors to try. Usually, my orders are about 80% restocks and 20% new flavors, but due to the great sale, and the fact that I had just restocked a few months ago, I decided to buy many more new flavors than I usually do.
And I'm glad I did. When I was entering in the new flavors into my Numbers juice recipe spreadsheet, I realized that I had reached a new milestone – when these new flavors arrive, I will have over 100 different flavors in my arsenal.
When I started mixing my own juice, I had only 15 flavors to choose from. But I slowly grew my collection, by adding a few new flavors each time I needed to re-order a flavor I was running out of. I never imagined that I would have over 100 flavors to choose from when fleshing out a recipe.
I used to see DIY mixers say they had 100, 200, or even more flavors at their disposal, and thought to myself, "Why would anyone need so many flavors? I doubt I'll ever have even 30–40 flavors, let alone a hundred. That's crazy!" But we all just keep slowly expanding our collection, and before you know it, you suddenly have so many more flavors than you ever thought you would need.
The lucky 100th flavor to be added to my collection happens to be RF Fried Dough (SC), by the way.
I remember each milestone but don't remember when I crossed the line into becoming a hoarder. Maybe it was when I got the hoarder badge on ATF. Maybe someday I'll stop... there's always one more flavor, though.
Gotta catch 'em all.
You've almost doubled your stash in a year? Holy crap =) I'm still drooling at this pic, although I'm inching closer myself. Would love to see what your man cave looks like today :)
It looks mostly the same with even more clutter under my desk.
That's awesome. I thought i was bad when i crossed over 800 but this makes me feel so much better :)
I've gotten well way past the point of a hundred and also recently needed to throw out a shit ton of it out because they were too old, and had lost a lot of their potency. Not to mention a lot of it was just stuff that I ordered and used once or twice for obscure recipes, which I found I didn't like.
Granted, now I have a much better idea of what I enjoy so I ordered smarter this time.
I lost track @ around 600. I have no idea why sometimes but I still shoot blindly into the abyss when it comes to flavors. I have certain profiles I go for and since the money is at my disposal I buy whatever I think will work. The addiction is real. Been mixing since late '12, early '13 though.
The thing that's prevented me from stocking up is the notion that flavours expire - is that not true? Cause if that's the case I'm gonna start hoarding too :-)
I wouldn't say they expire, but flavors do change slightly over time. In most cases, it's just a slight decrease in potency. When I run out of an "old" flavor that's been sitting for 1-2 years, and get a new bottle, I find that I sometimes need to slightly adjust any recipes using it. But I've never had a flavor actually "go bad" unless it was left out and exposed to sunlight.
I keep all my flavors stored in a dark, cool, and dry area, and they do just fine. The change in color over time is much bigger than any change in flavor.
