Setup: Mutation X v2, dual 8 wrap 26g kanthal 3 mm ID, cotton wicks @ 55-60 Watts.
Testing: Flavorah Oriental Tobacco @ 1.5%, steeped 1 month.
Flavor description: From Flavorah: “Nutty and bright sun cured tobacco, like a fresh opened pack. Some cedar notes are present. This tobacco flavor has low or no ash content, making it great to use in a flavor profile where you want a crisp tobacco note, but not the heavy ash, or spice of darker tobaccos.” I don’t personally get the nutty (maybe I’m turning in to a nutty mute?) and I do get a hint of some spice. Maybe the cedar note I’m picking up as spice. I think this makes a great base to build a Turkish Blend on. I prefer to use this with a little bit of HS Elder Captain over FLV Turkish. Their Turkish gets a bit weird for me. The tobacco in the Oriental is a crisp and bright Tobacco, not completely different than their Cured or Native. Not smoky or ashy really. It’s got some pretty nice body to it. It could probably work as a stand-alone around 2%, but I like to keep it around 1-1.5% and build on top of it.
Off flavors: Some of the FLV tobaccos give me a weird laundromat taste when I take them too high. I don’t think this is very common, but I know that it at least happens to a guy I work with. But at 1.5% it’s not really noticeable, and I mix with it closer to 1-1.25%, and don’t pick it up in a mix. But FLV usually doesn’t require enough to bring out any of those off notes.
Pairings: Throw Some Spices in with it. Some Fig or raisin. Goes really well with that raisin smell from a fresh pack (I use INW Fortuna Strike.) I imagine it would play nicely with some fruits. Maybe some Wood Spice if you want to exploit that cedar note and get really woodsy.
Second Opinions: For some reason I couldn’t really find any other notes on it. Not sure why, I think it’s probably one of my favorites from FLV. Anyone got any second opinions?
I suppose since there’s no second opinions and only 2 public recipes for it on ATF, I’ll throw out my Turkish for Pipe recipe just to give some more ideas on how to use it.
Since you're the tobacco specialist I have a quick question. I wanna boost the tobacco note in this recipe https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/18039#apple_bacco_sadpandavape_by_smoky
What would be a good tobacco to boost it in your opinion? I don't have any FLV sadly because I know they are pretty much the gold standard in tobacco. What would be another recommendation?
What do you have to work with? I personally would leave out the EM if you’re going to be using RY4 Double. It already has EM in it.
But I’ve made a couple of different apple tobaccos. One I used INW Tobacco Symphony and FE Hongtashan. The other I used FLV Native and FLV Connecticut Shade.
For reference:
But if you’re not trying to order new flavors, let me know what you got and I’ll try to suggest something.
I've only got Ry4 double, TPA Western and DK Tobacco. I'll place an order if need be.
You could maybe try the Western low, like 1% or less, but I have a feeling that could get weird since it’s got some leathery notes to it. It’s been a couple years since I’ve had DK, but I didn’t like it. The Hongtashan/Tobacco Symphony combo might be a bit tastier, but since ecigexpress seems to have stopped carrying Tobacco Symphony it would require an order from ecigexpress and Vapers Tek. Flavorah would probably be the easier route to go.
To more closely match the profile of that recipe, I’d take out RY4 Double and EM, and add 2.5% FLV Tatanka Tobacco and 1.5% Cured. I bet that would be pretty good with a butterscotch apple.
