A newbie's advice
submitted almost 8 years ago by Diveno

Hello guys. I started DIY mixing in August this year, after going with DIY coils in July. My primary target was always cheap, cost effective vaping, with a small starting cost and satisfactory results.

I am happy to say that i have achieved this, many thanks to this subreddit and various youtube guides. So as a newbie who was lucky enough to achieve this i am here to share with you my experience/advice. Remember this is specifically targetted at people who want low cost (actual low cost) and an easy entry to mixing.

So first of all i am going to list the basic supplies that are necessary to begin:

  • 1x Weight Scale 0.01g accuracy. I got mine around 15 euros from a local shop, makes mixing a child's play. Highly recommended.

  • PG 100%. I get mine from 2-4 euros/100ml.

  • VG 100%. Same price as PG.

  • Nicotine / Nicotine Booster if you are EU regulated. Use this site to calculate the Nicotine values, simply select Nicotine strength in weight through the tool. Easy af!

  • X amount of 10ml and 30ml bottles. Depending on your plans and conservative (remember cost-effectiveness!) mixing, you will not need a lot. I believe 5 (10ml) and 5-10 (30ml) bottles are enough to cover the day to day mixing + usage.

  • Some plastic pippetes are optional for some flavors/pg/vg bottles that are not squeeze to drip. Can be found at pharmacies and vape shops.

  • Finally the flavors. If you are searching for an easy beginning, with great results and no hussle you do not need a lot of flavors. Just the proven ones. Standard, no hussle, easy, but enjoyable and cheap:

  1. CAP Vanilla Custard V1
  2. CAP Sugar Cookie
  3. TPA Cheesecake Graham Crust
  4. TPA Vanilla Swirl/Vanilla Bean Gelato (Optional)

Now the good thing with these 3-4 flavours is that you can combine between them and always have something perfectly vapable and enjoyable. Simple recipes are around to check. If you are low on money, just get these and mix around and you will be impressed at the simplicity and quality of the result at a low cost.

The second benefit of just this small amount of flavors, is that you can later expand it as it can act as a basis or component to other recipes. Let's say you can afford to add another flavor in the collection. Get a strawberry this month, boom combines greatly. Next month get lemon lime e.g., boom combines greatly. I think you get the gist.

My point is, mixing has incredible value, and if you are in a strict economic situation i hope this experience/advice can help you see that you can make it work, with very little and still have a very pleasant vape. Cheers and thanks to users like ID10-T who help daily!

Don't forget, sometimes you have to steep (let the juices sit) for a couple of days. It takes the edge off sometimes and let's the flavors come through.

Of course i steep every mix. I didn't expand my advice into mixing , since most have already been clearly stated in this subreddit, i focused on the functionality of low cost entry under 50euros with great results !

Oops, gotcha. I assumed in the beginning I wouldn't have to steep, almost everything I tried making tasted like gasoline.

With a scale you can mix straight into your bottle easily.

I'm pretty new and a couple things I picked up that probably should have been more obvious than they were for me:

  1. Just transfer flavors that arent squeeze drip to plastic bottles
  2. Especially for single flavor testing, or where you dont care about exact pg/vg/nic levels, mix a premade batch of pg/vg/nic so you don't have to add them to every bottle you do.

What do you mix In? Yoiu don't use cylinders or beakers? You like pipetles better than syringe? I am putting together my shopping list to start mixing and I love your short list!

Don't need syringes when mixing by weight. Pippets are super cheap, and I find them to be easier to work with.

I love (FA) Caramel and (FW) Butterscotch Ripple can only recommend them both. (TFA) Vanilla Swirl is my fav vanilla, mixes well and I would also recommend (TFA) Vanilla Bean Ice Cream over (TFA) Vanilla Bean Gelato...

I'm from Canada and haven't tried the US vendors yet. Check the sidebar for recommended vendors. Bull city flavours seems to be the go to place down there

by lNTERLINKEDalmost 8 years agoI did not ask for this flair.

I mix a batch in a big Kilner jar (mason jar for any Americans) and transfer to bottles as and when I need it. I find a 30ml syringe is far quicker and easier than using a pipette.

I mix right into a red solo cup - super easy. Then I mix w/ a Kanthal whisk I made - attached to a cordless drill @ low speed for 30 seconds. Funnel into bottles & done.

I don't like mixing directly into bottles because of the narrow base - knocked over a few & moved to the solo cup - no more accidents.

The flavors and PG/VG that have a squeezable drip tip, i just poor inside the bottle which stands on the weight scale.

I think pipettes are cheaper than syringes, i buy them for like 0.20euro each but if you prefer syringes for bottles with no drip tip sure.

2-4 euros per 100mL of VG and PG? You're paying too much. If you can buy from Amazon.de, I can link you to something way cheaper that I buy myself.

Hmm probably, but i buy locally. The least i have found is 1.80 euro per 100mL. Send me the link for future references if i buy bulk. Because i would have transport fees i think. For now i just pop at the local store every 1-2 months and pay 1.80 :)

That's 5L, getting 1L bottles will be a little more expensive per L but should still save you money, shipping not included. Don't know where you live so hard to say how much money you'd be saving.
