Using Flavorings in Unconventional Ways
submitted almost 8 years ago by br4d24

So i wanted to open a discussion about using certain flavorings in creative ways, that arent cut and dry obvious (like using Strawberry ripe to get a ripe strawberry flavor). Things like adding FA Black Currant to certain fruits to give a jammy/jelly effect. Or using Irish Cream to enhance a butterscotch or caramel flavoring. Just listening to podcasts ive heard a bunch of other ones as well (hear of people using white peach and apricot to enhance other fruits but cant remember specifics), would love to see what cool discoveries this community has come across! Even somewhat obvious stuff like using FA Red Touch with another strawberry flavor to get a deeper "darker" kind of strawberry taste.

A few that I use in my mixes:

  • FA Lemon Sicily for tartness. Not sour. Tart
  • FA Meringue for sweetener that won't kill coils. Works really well for taming harsh citrus fruits when you don't want to add sweetener or marshmallow.
  • TPA Vanillin for helping duller fruits come to life a little. Also an addition to nearly all of my creamy mixes.
  • FA Apricot for boosting peaches and adding juiciness to other fruits
  • Cap Sugar Cookie for adding sweetness to bakery and cereal profiles. Works well for this at 1-2%.
  • Cap Jelly Candy + Cap Vanilla whipped cream to create a chewy vibe for my candy mixes
  • FW Pink Champagne for adding effervescence (bubbly/carbonated effect) to beverage mixes.

These are some great ones - also Cap Vanilla Custard for adding a thick mouthfeel for your desserty type mixes - at around 1-2% you don't taste the custard really, just get that thickness

Oh wow nice! Those are some good ones I haven't hear before!

Could you elaborate on the Jelly Candy/Vanilla Whipped Cream combo? Been trying for ages to nail to a gummy-ish vape :/

It's a tip I picked up from another user here. It basically creates the "white part" of a gummy ring. If you want to highlight the white part, do 0.75% of each. If you intend to keep the chewiness but throw some flavors on top of it, keep them both at 0.5% or a drop per 10mL for each. You can also stagger them in 0.25% increments to enhance chewiness or creaminess. Like 0.75% of one and 0.5% of the other. Don't take either above 1% when using them together. You'll get a waxyness in your mix.

There are countless examples of using inw cactus to add juiciness. Cactus isn't the only way to get that effect though. FA Pear can work in similar ways. One of my favorite uses of a flavor in this way is FA Raspberry in Utopia by SixStrings952.

I'm not sure if this is the type of discussion you're aiming for, but I haven't seen a better spot to mention what I think was an interesting use of FA Raspberry.

Yup exactly what I'm talking about! Thanks for the tips! I keep forgetting to order inw cactus, really gotta grab it.

Is the juiciness from INW Cactus noticable? I just bought a 30ml bottle of it - been meaning to for a while, just getting to trying it with my mixes now!

I also picked up TFA Champagne - I've read Pink Champagne or Sparkling Wine lends a better effervescent effect (though I do realize it's not "real" effervescence, just a brain / tongue trick), but where I ordered from didn't stock it.

Edit: Also WS-32 (I think) vs Koolada. Noticeably cooler sensation?

Yep, it is. This and this by /u/hashslingingslashur are both great examples of how it should be used.

I can't answer your other question--I don't have any experience with WS-32.

Thanks for the shout & reviews. I think those are both winners. Cactus is also great in just about any melon recipe. It's got a melon vibe to it

Another great option to add juiciness is Cap Double Apple

I want to know too, I can always use more podcasts. This sounds cool.

DIY or die has a gaggle of different ones like in the mix and noted; also fresh from the kitchen (which I guess is a "liveshow" or whatever, but I just listen to the audio). Sometimes watch Jenifer jarvis' liveshows as well as fresh 03's on occasion. All have wonderful tidbits of great info I haven't seen anywhere else on the internet. Really helpful for learning new techniques and just interesting useful stuff. Hard to remember everything though haha.

Look in the post I linked above. At the bottom are links for flavors that add sweetness, and those that add texture.

I find it very helpful to read the flavor description of every concentrate that I order (and again when I test them out myself). If you do the same you'll find that additional uses are often suggested.

Also, do a search for Modest Monday Layering Flavors - another good one.

I learnt this particular fact from a guy on a mixing group not sure if he’s on here but his elr profile is Silba. Reece on Facebook. Tfa dragonfruit and inw cactus really boost strawberry flavours

Dragonfruit yes, I think cactus is a bit overpowering for strawberry. It works better for darker fruits from what I've heard.

At the right percentage, cactus and strawberry flavors will play nice together. Unless I'm making a cactus-focused juice, I typically only use cactus in the 0.2-0.3% range.

I agree I generally do 1% df and .25 cactus

I'll give that a shot, I've used it at around .5 and found it to be overwhelming.
