Is it true that DIY juice that is low on nicotine (for example 6 mg) will not really darken in color ? I had mixed 100 ml (6 mg nic.) of a milkshake raspberry juice and it has been steeping for one month now (glass bottle, no breathing). Hasn't really changed color at all.

3 points

by leapinglabratsalmost 8 years ago

Not really, the flavors are the primary source of color and it won't change much over time, if we're just talking weeks to a couple of months. Any juice will eventually darken though. Oxidizing the juice through heat, exposure to sunlight or open air can speed this up drastically. Forget a bottle in a bad place and it can turn black, nic or no nic.

Okay, but let's take this pic for example : https://imgur.com/a/sTvdg

On the left you have a fresh DIY mix, on the right an older mix (not sure how old). How long does it take the juice to darken like the one on the right ?

3 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 8 years ago

There’s no way to tell. Why are you concerned about the color? That’s not indicative of the juice being “ready” if that’s what you are asking.

youre going to have to add around ~~30ml~~ 45ml of vg+ your nic and flavors.

looks like you made 33/67 vg pg and are tryna make 73/27

my math: 73% of 30 ~ 21 and 27% of 30 ~ 9 or ~ 2:1

you have: 9ml of vg and 21ml of pg

my solution: add 45ml of vg to obtain double the amount vg to pg + more nic and flavors

close enough

triple reply for clarity.

that 15% flavor might throw things off though so it may be more like..... 40-45ml of vg.... by the time you get done.

making a new bottle would be easier...

45ish is my final answer

by DARKFiB3Ralmost 8 years ago

Thank you for the response, but you've confused me from the start.

The screen shot shows that I have made 30/70 but wanted to make 70/30

How did you get 33/67 - 73/27, is it because of the 1.8ml of 50/50 nic?

Apologies if I am being an idiot, all offers of help are very much appreciated. :)

dyslexia happened prolly counted your nic as all pg. still close enough

fwiw... your post was kinda confusing from the start. liek a spot the difference game with numbers that required pen, paper, and multiple browser tabs.

by Lampburglaralmost 8 years ago

I've done some research for you, and from what I've read in a few different places, the recommendation is to blend in pure VG until it's close to what you want, but it's going to kill the flavor. Perhaps, this is just my idea, mix up another batch,at say 90VG/10PG and blend the two bottles together, maybe top off with 5-10ml extra of straight VG, this way you aren't losing the flavor by just using straight VG. I chose 90/10 because that's going to give you the highest VG concentration possible thus making the blended bottles higher in VG.

by DARKFiB3Ralmost 8 years ago

Thank you for taking the time to look into it for me.

Your idea sounds plausible, in fact it actually makes sense, without me having to read it 3 times.

This makes alarm bells ring in my head. If it seems too easy, I'm probably doing something wrong :D

I suppose I can't make it any worse, right?.... Right?

Do you guys do anything else with your glycerin ? I bought some xantham gum and made some thick anal lube which I use to shave my head, works amazingly. I could add some aloes but with only distilled water, xantham gum and glycerin it's more multi-purpose.

Anyone has their own recipe for things like that ? I'm also interested in making toothpaste so if you know of any resources please let me know. Like a subreddit, some web site or something you know.

I would assume Pinterest has tons of that type of thing. They might not have anal lube recipes, but I bet you could get some nice toothpaste recipes there...

It’s also great for making yellow jacket traps

I have just ordered everything I need to begin my first attempt at DIY. Can anyone help me with recommendations about flavors that are good stand alones? I think I would like some basic fruits and a couple good Tobaccos. I have been using Bull City to look at flavors but I am overwhelmed. Any help would be great. I usually vape Cloud Alchemist Bacchus and Festiva and Charlie Noble Tripoli. I dont really go for sweeter or creamy flavors. Earthy and subtle maybe? TIA!

For the tobaccos, FLV Red Burley, FLV Cured, FLV Kentucky Blend, INW Black for Pipe, INW Dromedary, SC French Pipe, SC Old Captain, HS Elder Captain (has kind of a clove type of spice note, FYI), HS Arabic, and HS Indian are all pretty good stand alone.

Just wanted to say thank you to the folks who helped me out when I was placing my first order and mixing up my first batches. Everything tastes fantastic - I can't get over how cheap vaping suddenly became! Even without switching over to an RDA and building myself, my cost per week is now less than my old cost per day when I was smoking.

I spent $75 on my initial DIY supplies buy, which is less than the cost of 300mL of my favorite juice locally. I decided I'd call it good if I could make 300mL of vapeable juice. So far, every bit of the ~150mL I've mixed up has been delicious! I expected a much higher failure rate - I'm so grateful to you guys and your experience and references. You all rock!

What are some good tobacco flavors?

I was trying to clone "The Duke", which requires Tobacco Symphony... but it's out of stock at ecigexpress, and not sold at nicotine river(the two places I'm going to order from).

So far, for tobaccos, I have

Hongtashan (Black Fire) Flavor by Flavors Express

Black Mile Plus by Flavors Express

But, i feel like these are specific tobaccos. I want a slightly larger range of tobaccos, to try mixing with various flavors like nut, caramel, tobacco, vanilla, vanilla ice cream, chocolate, etc.

Looking for one or two more GOOD tobaccos, for me to get in my first order. I don't plan to make another order again for a few months, so trying to really get some good tobaccos in this one.

3 points

by Oldguynothumbsalmost 8 years agoWME

Start watching these they go through heaps of tobaccos and their properties, strengths, weakness, flavour and everything you can think of.

Noted - Non Aromatic Tobaccos

Noted- Aromatic Tobaccos

Noted - Additives

Edit: The first two I got recommended was FLV Red Burley and FLV Cured Tobacco. But I have no idea if it I'll work for your cause.

3 points

by coop34almost 8 years ago

Cardinal is my favorite tobacco juice atm. The RY4 is very good, similar to TFA's version, but smoother. And both of those FLV tobaccos I would call good ones, esp the RB. FLV Cured is supposedly outstanding too, but fades out fairly fast by all accounts.

My tobacco knowledge is far from complete, but FLV tends to be good to go after a couple of days instead of the weeks or months that it takes other brands.

2 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimalmost 8 years agoresident tobacco specialist

FLV Connecticut Shade I think can be pretty diverse. It would work well with vanillas and nuts, and although it tastes nothing like Tobacco Symphony, I think it would be really good in that Duke clone, but I’d use it at .5% or .75% there. It won’t really taste like the Duke anymore, but it should be good and I’ll probably try that tonight. INW Am4a is a good, complex flavor that you could use alone or mix with some vanilla and creams and it’s also good with dark fruits like black cherry and fig. I would keep that one below 2%. It starts getting weird to me above that.

So I clicked the random recipe button in ATF and it didn't sound to bad to me, was wondering if I could get some feedback on the percentages and if you think it would mix up nice. I thought I might mix it 60vg/40pg/6ml.
Flv cream .5
Flv mango 1.3
Flv passion fruit 1.1
Flv pink guava .5
Hs pineapple .09
Tpa strawberry (ripe) 1.9
Fa Tanger 1

4 points

by leapinglabratsalmost 8 years ago

Sounds delicious, but there's only one way to find out :) Haven't tried most of those flavors myself, but you generally don't want a lot of flavors pulling in different directions, it will just turn into a muddled mess, especially after a steep. I would probably skip the guava and pick either the passion fruit or the tangerine. Cream optional. You won't taste much of the strawberry but that will actually help bind and smooth out the otherwise potentially sharp flavors.

Make 10 ml, not 30 or 100 ml. Try it right after mixing and see how you like it, but expect it to change a bit over the next few days. After that you'll know which direction you may want to go with it.

I got a little busy, but finally mixed this up a few hours ago and thought it tasted fantastic right off the shake. So good in fact I decided to take another pull, and it felt almost over blended. This is only my second recipe I've made, and I tried a bunch of single flavors in between so maybe it's just that? Anyways I'll switch out my cotton and coils tomorrow and give her another fresh test! Thanks for the advice :)

I'm not sure what over-blended means. Too much flavor overall? Flavors too melded together to you can't taste the individual flavors?

Would you recommend a newbie to diy to mix using the weight method? I understand the differences between that and volume method, but is one method inherently easier than the other?

4 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimalmost 8 years agoresident tobacco specialist

Weight is a lot easier. You just put drops in until you get to the right weight. Don’t have to eyeball anything or clean up a bunch of syringes.

2 points

by TheStankTankalmost 8 years ago

Absolutely. Mixing by weight is much easier and more accurate.

Yes they are. FA has three limes now. Cold pressed, distilled and key lime.

They are all quite a bit different. I mean they are all lime but different in taste. You should look up them all under the flavor reviews in the side bar to get down to the specifics.

Yanno, just when I think I'm making headway, I end up completely baffled. So, running low on nic, and funds, so I ordered a one shot and some flavors. The website in question confused me. The give you the big ass bottle of PG/VG to dump the one shot in. No guesswork, great.

But, the diagram shows add 15ml of nic, and they don't provide nic yet.

So, how much 100mg nic do I need to dump in to make that bad boy 3mg? Also, how do I math this for future reference?

On the bright side, picked up bacon flavor, so i can experiment and try to cook up maple bacon doughnut.

3 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimalmost 8 years agoresident tobacco specialist

.03xmL of big ass bottle.

Since it’s 100 mg/ml you can just figure it the same as saying 3%, which would be the formula above. .03 multiplied by the amount of your final batch.

Another equation that might come in handy if you are ever using something like 72 mg/ml would be v1xC1=v2xc2

V1= Volume to add

C1= starting concentration

V2= final volume of mix

C2= final concentration of mix

So for 100 mg/ml and let’s just say “big ass” is maybe 250 ml, and you want 3 mg, it’d look like this:

V1x100=250x3

Solve for v1, and you get 7.5 ml.

3 points

by Kitu5almost 8 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Thanks. Knew I forgot something. So, for 120ml, 3.6ml. I'll plug that in there. Regardless, means juice for a month...unless adding bacon makes it crack-like.

5 points

by coop34almost 8 years ago

Tried bacon once. Had to throw that tank away, then burn my house down.

3 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimalmost 8 years agoresident tobacco specialist

If they left room in the bottle for 15 ml of nicotine, then 3.6 ml might put it a hair over 3 mg, but it won’t be noticeable. Good luck with that bacon haha. Sounds interesting.

I got a free 10ml of FUNK'D "I love PB" ejuice recently and loved it. Was seriously impressed - I expected the usual chemical tastes with a vague nutty undertone but nope; it was like vaping PB. A lovely sweet, nutty, rich, smokey peanut butter flavour. Also the liquid was a syrupy dark brown colour.

I finished the bottle this morning and decided to try and put together my own PB recipe and... it sucks. Tasteless & bland!

Here's my recipe:

https://pasteboard.co/GR48wCw.png

I realise these flavours may not be suited to shake & vape, but apart from steeping, I don't see the flavour improving. The colour is also an extremely pale yellow.

I stuck to generally recommended mixing percentages but it tastes like every flavour, or at least the CAP Peanut Butter, could have been been doubled % wise! Interested in advice on what to change, take away or add - or your own killer PB recipes. In the mean time, going to let this one steep a while.

4 points

by chewymidgetalmost 8 years agoThe Colonel

Well the first problem you're having here is using Cap Peanut Butter on top of using their V2 of it. Which the normal sucks and even more so with the V2. If you want a good peanut butter vape you're going to have to get TFA Peanut Butter. FLV Peanut Butter is also good. Used together creates a stronger more realistic flavor.

This is one of my favorite peanut butter vapes.

3 points

by Scrampunkalmost 8 years ago

Nice, thanks chewy. That recipe seems more like what I'm looking for 👌 Yeah, I'm definitely not feeling a few of the Capella flavours. I'll try and get a hold of the concentrates and brew that recipe up next weekend or at least grab TFA's PB and experiment with that.

Anyone tried CAP Blueberry? I tried it at 5% the way I first o any juice. I was convinced I had burnt the cotton in my coil after only half a tank - 2ml. When I went to change the cotton it was totally white (new cotton for new juice). Changed the cotton anyway and tried the blueberry again. No blueberry taste - just a burnt taste. no dry hit - plenty of vapour.

4 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 8 years ago

If you want blueberry, get FW Blueberry, TFA Blueberry Extra and add FA Bilberry if you are looking for a realistic Blueberry

1 points

by Airseiralmost 8 years ago

Wow a lot just for a blueberry vape. No big deal - just all the other flavours I have tried so far have been close to what I want starting at 5%. I did the AP Golden Pineapple this weekend and that has turned out to be pretty weak at 5% - I can only just taste pineapple. Guess I got lucky with the first 10 flavours I tried :)

1 points

The point of the Blueberry Trinity is that it holds up to whatever you throw at it. Bakery, fruit, dessert profiles, doesn’t matter. Single Blueberry flavors seem to get lost when when used on their own.

I am planning on doing a Menthol Tobacco and I have gone through 20ml of TFA Western on its own - I love that stuff. I also have some FA Menthol Arctic which I got so I could have straight Tobacco or menthol. Any recommendations for a starting point? would 4% western and 1% Menthol be a good first try or too strong on the menthol?

3 points

by Oldguynothumbsalmost 8 years agoWME

Do a small batch with maybe 0.3%. Some people are really sensetive to menthol. You can always bump the menthol up by just adding it as you go. Personally my menthol mixes range from 0.3%-1.5% depending on my setup and recipe.

What percentages are recommended for TFA Champagne and TFA Koolada? I'm trying to add them to a cherry coke recipe and I'm only getting light hints of the cola flavor and almost no cherry while the whole thing tastes kinda like a mint bubblegum.

The recipe: TPA Cola Syrup = 9% TPA Black Cherry = 3.5%

And then I added: TPA Koolada = 0.5% TPA Champagne = 1% EZ-Sweetz = 0.5%

3 points

by Lampburglaralmost 8 years ago

Cherry is extremely hard to work with. In my experience anyway. No matter the scenario I've either not been able to taste it or it tastes way too artificial like candy. I find champagne is a great fruit enhancer but I find when you reach the terrority of actually tasting it, it just tastes like old, stale wine. Not very enjoyable. Some like it but I just can't get around that. If you using it to add "fizz" or a carbonated effect, I don't know of anyone who has gotten to that point yet unfortunately. You may need to research "TPA Cola Syrup enhancers/boosters" and the same for the cherry. I find most time when mixing, every single main flavor needs support flavors to bring it to where you desire. For instance. I have a Blueberry cream recipe that is dead on blueberry jam/pie filling. I've got 4 different support flavors in there to add effects and taste. So my base blueberry has INW Bilberry Shisha, FLV Grape,TFA Blueberry Extra, CAP Blueberry Jam and TFA Pomegranate Deluxe, each serving a different purpose but all going towards the same end goal of an authentic tasting blueberry jam/pie filling. Support flavors and enhancers are almost essential in my opinion.

I've been working on this honeydew/cucumber/elderflower recipe and I'm feeling kind of stuck on it. The latest iteration is:

  • 3% TPA Champagne

  • 2% CAP Cucumber

  • 2% FA Cucumber

  • 0.75% FLV Elderflower

  • 0.75% JF Honeydew Melon

It's inspired by a cocktail I had somewhere that used St Germain. Problem is that the flavor notes are there, but they all taste a little rough. I feel like they need something to pull them together. Any suggestions? I'm almost thinking TPA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream might be good, but that's definitely not part of the original cocktail. Any pointers would be appreciated...I think this has potential to be a very good recipe, but it's not there yet.

Cucumber can be very harsh. You might try .15% of marshmallow. That small of an amount you won't know it's there, but it will add just a tad sweetness and could smooth out the harshness.

2 points

by chewymidgetalmost 8 years agoThe Colonel

60/40 is the best compromise between vapor and flavor. 70/30 is great if you get use to it and let it sit for a tad bit longer.

70/30 mixes are the reason I decided to try DIY xD got tired of having thick juice that took forever to wick.

Experienced mixers, what is your process for taste testing your individual flavors? How do you guys do it without running out of VG/PG insanely quick? (Unless you do).

3 points

by Lampburglaralmost 8 years ago

I mix 5ml samples, usually 70Vg/30PG. 5ml is more than enough to get a feel for a flavor!

2 points

by isiordia95almost 8 years ago

Nice. The last few that I've done, they've been 15ml samples at 50/50. Most of them turn out to be killer so I just let them age.

Do you actually invest in 5ml bottles or just mix 5ml of a 30 or something?

1.) I've been looking into buying sweeteners that won't quickly kill your coils and I'd like to try stevia in PG.

I want to go to a health food store and buy powdered stevia extract, but I'm not sure what ratio of S to PG to use.

Is 10% stevia in PG, by weight, too much / too little / just right?

2.) How does erythritol flavor/sweetness compare to stevia? I've seen it around, but I don't know that much about it.

I saw a bottle of monk fruit in water at a store for just a dollar and picked it up to try in my coffee. It's a bit on the odd side. IDK if I'd actually buy monk fruit in PG to use in vape juices, but I'm still curious about erythritol and stevia.

2 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 8 years ago

It’s honestly better to start mixing without sweeteners.

2 points

by HashSlingingSlashuralmost 8 years ago
  1. I would recommend not using any sweetener

  2. If you have to use sweetener then just buy FLV sweetness. It's stevia derived but has no taste. Stevia tastes pretty bad tbh

2 points

by Crash3urnalmost 8 years ago

If I'm using an ejuice calculator and it tells me to use 5g PG base and 10g VG base and I have a 40/60 mix, would I just add 15g of the mix?

2 points

by leapinglabratsalmost 8 years ago

A good calculator should let you use a premixed base, but yes, here's why:

10 g VG = 7.94 ml and I'll be lazy and assume PG is 1 g/ml, so you want a total of 12.94 ml of base, and that amount of your premixed base just so happens to weigh 15 grams. Your PG/VG ratio will not match precisely what it says in the calculator, but the important part is not diluting the flavors and nic too much or too little.

So I'm getting back onto vaping after a while away, and am having a bit of trouble working out what mixing proportions I need to use since the TPD came into force.

I will be mixing a pretty standard 70/30 at 6mg for home (sub-ohm) use and I'm fine with this, seems very simple. However I would also like to have some 50/50 liquid at probably 9mg for use at work with at 1.2-1.8 ohm mtl build (less thirsty, less vapour, stronger with more throat hit etc.). But I can't work out what proportions of VG base, PG base and nicotine shots I need. Can someone more knowledgeable and experienced help me out?

Fwiw my nic shots are 20mg/ml and VG base. Would I need to buy some PG Base nic shots for this, or can it be done with what I have?

Use a calculator to mix. You should be doing this anyways.

by BritinBayernalmost 8 years ago

Sure, I think I'm just confusing myself when it comes to the nic shots. This TPD stuff is a bit new to me and a bit annoying! Tried using a calculator before but just couldn't get it to work (always saying this PG/VG will not work with these amounts). Although just played around again and got one to work..

There’s nothing different with the nic shots than any other base. It just may be a lower concentration than what you are used to.

Hey guys, I have a modest Justfog q16 and yesterday I mixed a small bottle of juice (about 55 VG 35 PG 10 aroma).

However, I read that in such devices it is recommended not to use more than 50% VG because it makes the juice too thick, so I added 5% of water. The thing is, I did not use demineralised water, just some tap water. Do you think I can still use the juice until the bottle is finished?

3 points

by birdwingsbeatalmost 8 years ago

I'm new to missing but not new to vaping.. I would dump it. Add VG next time.

2 points

by sushipleesalmost 8 years ago

The fact that there is too much VG is the reason why I added water in the first place though

3 points

by birdwingsbeatalmost 8 years ago

I'm sorry, answered that before coffee. PG**

3 points

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 8 years ago

No. Do not add tap water to juice. Use PG. Distilled water is only used for those who don’t want to add more PG. Dump it

A 5% margin won't really hurt unless your flavorings are vg based

After a good horchata concentrate! Looks like cap horchata or TFA horchata smooth are the best offerings, but I am unsure which to choose or if there are other better ones out there. Which one is most authentic? Don't want overpowering spice, bit do want some, and want a nice rich creamy horchata note that can hold its own as a main note in a recipe.

Also, can you all recommend some good vanilla flavorings for me? Ones that are nice and bright, don't add too much extra weight to a mix, and contrast well with darker flavors and fruits. So far I only have TFA vanilla swirl and inw vanilla shisha as my dedicated vanilla flavors (also have stiff like cap van custard and vbic). Basically after something similar to what inw vanilla shihsa does, but hopefully with somewhat different uses.

It is, and it's very expensive. But it's also very strong. I haven't done the math but I think if you take into account how much you will actually use (0.25%ish) compared to another vanilla like INW Shisha (1%ish) or TFA Vanilla Swirl (3%ish), it's probably comparable and possibly even cheaper.

Recently got into DIY. Mixed a batch of MY Dude which is a My Man clone by diyordie. Used the exact flavors listed in the recipe and mixed with a digital scale. It's been steeped for 7 days. The flavor is not even close to the real My man. I know there might be more sugar in the original. But i feel the flavor is very muted and not creamy no depth in it compare to the real thing. Should I let it steep for another 2 weeks or it wont change that much regardless? Thanks

2 points

by Oldguynothumbsalmost 8 years agoWME

I think it's a remix, not a clone. It's inspired by My Man. But that recipe is not for you probably, in two weeks the cream might come forward a bit more.

Or make different batches where you lower some flavourings and up others. Adjust the recipe too your liking or try another recipe.

by asoapalmost 8 years ago

Help please.

I've been at this for about a month now. And I'm getting muted flavours. I watched this video which explained common problems.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AtJ4cQqgA7M

One of them could be too much of a specific chemical. Like I'm mixing stuff at low percentages 1-2% of each flavour up to about 12% total in flavours. And I'm letting it steep for two weeks.

Anyway, does anyone have a recommended levels for each chemical? Like how much is too much ethyl maltol? My juices might be too high in that.

Another possibility is that I do indeed have "olfactory fatigue" as even something like Grack is lacking in flavour.

Or I might just be coming down with a cold.

You're going to have to give a few examples of some recipes you're making with this issue.

2 points

by asoapalmost 8 years ago

Sure thing. Here is two recipes. One is grack which is all over the place

  • Cactus (INW) - 2.25%
  • Dragonfruit (TFA) - 1%
  • Grape (INW) - 4%
  • Koolada (TFA) - 0.75%
  • Meringue (FA) - 1%
  • Raspberry (INW) - 0.5%
  • Sweet Strawberry (CAP) - 1.5%

And the one I'm making myself:

  • Raspberry (INW) - 3%
  • Raspberry Sweet (TFA) - 3%
  • Sweet Strawberry (CAP) - 2.5%
  • Marshmallow (TFA) - 2%
  • Catcus (INW) - 0.75%
  • Dragonfruit (TFA) - 0.75%
  • Sweetener (TFA) - 1%

Do you vape anything else besides these two recipes very often?

Those share exactly the same concentrates so eventually you'll get olfactory fatigue from those. Which is why these particular ones taste very faint to you. You have to rotate out recipes with completely different flavorings to keep mixes fresh. You can even try vaping unflavored for a couple days, too.

Also, that second recipes, has way too much INW Raspberry in it. That stuff is strong.

If you're only making 6mg juice for MLT vaping, (in regular tanks, not pods,) is there a big difference between nic salts and regular nicotine?

I'm pretty sure I'm going to buy my nicotine and a lot of flavors from Nicotine River.. and I'd just like to know if ponying up the cash to upgrade to salts would be worth it for what I'm trying to do.

Start at 1% of the total mix being distilled water. If it's not thin enough shoot for 2%.

A few questions.

1.) Which is better for buying PG/VG? Ecig Express, or Nicriver? Nicotine River is about 30% cheaper, so I'm going to get that, unless Ecig's is notably better product.

2.) Can somebody reccomend a really good vanilla flavor that is sold at Ecig Express, or Nic River?

3.) What "utensils"/"tools" are needed to mix your own juice? I plan on buying a bunch of 15ml, 30ml, and 60ml bottles. Beside that what do I need? Syringes? What size? Is it just syringes and bottles I need?

4.) What strength nicotine should I get? I plan on buying 36mg nicotine(250ml of it), but I'm not sure if it's right. I plan on smoking 4.5mg, then 3mg, then 1.5mg eventually(not sure if that matters).

  1. If you're going to spend $50+ go with nicotine river as you'll get free shipping. I've tried all sorts of different brands of VG/PG and they all taste the same to me.

  2. TFA Vanilla Swirl, INW Shisha Vanilla and TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream are probably my favorites off the top of my head. Really depends on what you want to do with them. There are a lot of different vanillas depending on the application.

  3. It depends on if you want to mix by weight or volume. I would recommend getting this scale and mixing by weight. Less clean up and you can mix straight in the bottle and shake. To start off you can just get some 30ml bottles, make sure they have a wide mouth (like these). Really depends on what you like, I personally hate glass so I use LDPE unicorn bottles. Getting a verity of sizes is a good idea though.

  4. I always buy 100mg/ml as you get the best bang for your buck. You use less so it lasts longer. You can get 36mg/ml if you want, it's really up to you. I would recommend getting whatever you get based in PG rather than VG as it's easier to work with.

2 points

by gatoradefruitpunch12almost 8 years ago2cool4rulez
  1. I plan on making tobacco based mixes, with other flavors(hazelnut, caramel, vanilla, etc). Knowing that, can you reccomend a good one?

  2. I'm really not trying to spend that much money on a scale. Would I just buy two sized syringes, and use them, to measure by volume?

thanks

3 points

by chewymidgetalmost 8 years agoThe Colonel

I would get INW Shisha Vanilla and TFA Vanilla Swirl then. Tobaccos arent my forte so their might be a few more others could recommend.

I would get 5-10 1ml, 2-5 5ml, 2 10ml and a couple 30ml syringes if you can. The 1ml and 5ml are going to be your most used. Make sure you get the leur locking blunt tips for them as well.

My First order Flavors is a good place to start if you are looking for a general list. My advice would be find a few highly rated recipes in the profile you like at All the Flavors and only buy the flavors listed for the recipes. After doing that for a few recipes, your flavor stash will grow and you will get to know what you really like.

by verruktalmost 8 years ago

Need someone to look over my stuff before I buy. Also have a question about nicotine options afterwards:

  • Scale to mix by weight

  • Flavoring/PG/VG from MFS which I chose just scrolling through sidebar links

  • I'm looking at nic options on MFS here and I'm unsure what to pick. Say I want to start at 125ml (just picking the smallest since idk how long they last), which nic level do I choose? What about PG/VG mix for a beginner? I want mixing to be as simple as possible.

  • What do you guys recommend to use for transferring flavoring/pg/vg/nic into bottles? Just a funnel and pour it in?

2 points

by Grorcoalmost 8 years ago

I'm pretty new myself, but as far as nicotine goes get 100mg/ml 100 percent pg. The concentration won't make it any harder to mix, but you'll want the pg it's easier to shake up and avoid "hot spots". It was the first mistake I made getting 100 percent VG nicotine, my arm hurts from shaking it lol.

2 points

by verruktalmost 8 years ago

I went with what you suggested (ended up ordering from nic river). Thanks.

by ramblingpariahalmost 8 years ago

I have that scale. It's a little slow at times when you're doing hundredths of a gram, but it's awesome, especially for the price.

As far as what you've chosen, they're all great, though Sour might be a bit more advanced. I've got it, but I haven't really got into it yet. I hear good things, though. I notice you're buying the same quantity of VG and PG, though - unless you're planning to use equal amounts or more PG than VG, I'd get more VG. I bought a gallon of VG and a liter of PG when I started, but I generally mix at 80/20 (VG/PG), so I went through the VG a lot faster. Remember that most flavorings also contain PG, so even if you want a higher ratio of PG to VG, you still probably won't use as much.

When you say transferring into bottles - you mean for making recipes?

I use a brown 15 ml Boston round glass bottle with an eyedropper type lid (bought a pack off Amazon) for my nic, which I also wrapped in foil and keep in the fridge. I keep my main nic stash in the freezer, also wrapped in foil. Nicotine and light do not mix well. :)

As far as the nic itself, I like to keep it simple and get 100mg/ml nic. My first order I got 75/25 PG/VG, and this time I went with 100% PG for my nic. Personally, there's not a big difference (in the low quantities most mixers use), and a little extra PG helps things mix and flow a little easier.

For example, in a 30 ml bottle, your nic might look like this: 0.90ml .93g 3.00%. As you might imagine, a quarter or half of .90ml isn't going to be a massive difference in terms of PG or VG in a 30 ml recipe. I'd say go 50/50, 75/25, or 100/0 (PG/VG) with your nic. The recipe calculators will take this into account as well, so don't sweat it too much.

As for VG and PG, I bought a couple of plastic condiment/squeeze bottles from my grocery store. Sort of like these, but I believe mine are 12 oz or a pint. I trimmed the tip (to make the hole wider) on the VG bottle, because that stuff is very thick, and a little wider hole made things a lot better.

Flavoring - nearly all flavorings come in plastic dripper bottles, unless you're buying large bottles (like 4 oz or so), so don't sweat that too much. Since you're measuring by weight, that will work fine. You can also get a pack of disposable plastic pipettes of amazon for a few bucks - helpful when you're working with flavors that come in glass bottles (some I got from Wizard labs came this way). For flavors I have in large bottles, I transfer into smaller squeezers like these. I also use these for small testers, since I like most flavors and don't mind "wasting" if I don't like what I made. Trying to do .25% flavor in a 15ml bottle by weight is tricky, so smaller than that would be even more painful. With a much more precise/sensitive scale, it probably wouldn't be so bad, but you're not likely get something like that for 30 bucks or less.

For my recipes that I know I like, I go with either the 30ml version of those bottles, or if I'm feeling fancy, something more like this in 1 or 2oz. You can go bigger, but for my use, I'd rather make lots of different flavors than one or two big ones (at least so far - I like experimenting). YMMV.

> I have that scale. It's a little slow at times when you're doing hundredths of a gram, but it's awesome, especially for the price.

It's the only scale I've seen suggested here so I wasn't sure if there were any other scales people liked. Any other scales out there that might be quicker and not WAY more expensive?

Also, thank you for all of the fantastic information. I went with PG since make a good point about it not being much of a difference in terms of VG levels but is much easier to mix. I ended up finding a bunch of stuff you mentioned on Amazon as well so I have those coming in. Thanks again.

by ramblingpariahalmost 8 years ago

No problem! Happy to help.

As far as the scale, not that I've seen. That's the scale I've seen recommended time and again for amateur/diy mixers, and with good reason - you just have to be a little patient with it, but it's a good scale.

If you haven't already don't order from MFS if you can avoid it.

Example why, TFA Strawberry 15ml is 3.95. If you get it from bullcityflavors for a 30ml it's 2.99. You'll save a lot of money on flavorings getting them from someone else.

If you wanted to get a full order in for nicotine and flavorings go with nicotine river.

The only kit that I have seen which comes from a reputable nic vendor is nicotine river. They have most major flavoring brands too. Pick out some recipes that appeal to you AND have good feedback. The recipe archives in this sub and alltheflavors.com have tons of well-reviewed recipes.

A $50 investment will let you make a lot of juice, without a lot of commitment. If you like the hobby, their are other places to resupply.

It's under the verified venders link on the side bar, as far as "kits" go I'd check out bullcityflavors.com I know they have some community recipes you can just click on which one you want and easily grab all the flavors for it. Then you just need nicotine, VG, pg, a scale and you're ready to go :)

So I have a friend that is trying to quit smoking which is awesome he’s an elderly guy that’s pretty set on his tobacco flavor. Was wondering if anyone could recommend a simple recipe for me to mix him? He has smoke marb ultra lights for probably the last 20 years probably. Don’t know if that information is useful. Would like to order as few of ingredients as possible I don’t see myself getting into tobacco flavors just wanted to help him out so any recipe recommendations would be appreciated.

FLV Red Burley. It smells like a pack of cigs. Strong too, so ultra light would prob be under 1%. FLV Cured would prob be worth picking up too.

The neat thing about FLV is the short steep time, days instead of weeks/months.

Love all the information on this sub! You guys rock! I have a few questions.

  1. I use a tank, I understand the benefits of Rda’s and have tried many times to build myself. For whatever reasons I am not able to make decent builds, and honestly would rather just buy coils for my tank for ease of use. Is mixing your own juice feasible with sub ohm tanks?

  2. I tend to pinch pennies when I can, but seem to have expensive taste in juice. So I’ve been buying the house stuff at one of my local b&m stores simply because it’s cheap, even though I am not a fan of the flavors. I wish I could control the vg/pg ratios sometimes, as my tanks tend to run better on different viscosities. Mixing seems like I would be able to control this, as well as knowing my ingredients. Is this correct?

  3. Is it feasible to start off mixing zero nic? I vape 3mg usually, and was never a heavy smoker. It seems like it would be easy to grab a small amount of bottles, syringes, vg/pg, and a few popular flavors to give it a go. If I have success I figure I could always add supplies and invest in the nic at that point.

  4. Are “shake and vape” mixes actually out there? I am terrible at waiting, and generally executing plans haha. I am mostly interested in simple recipes. I prefer plain berry flavors, never could get into dessert, custard, or pastry flavors. So things like tfa strawberry ripe sound amazing to me on its own.

Thank you in advance for any thoughts!

2 points

  1. Did you buy a coil wrapper? They are extremely easy to use, you literally feed wire through a hole then count how many times you turn it. Also yes I sub ohm tanked my first juice I made today in my wife's tank, and have been using it on my sub ohm deck with great success :).
  2. You are completely correct on this, also as a sub-note I haven't tried it but you can also use some distilled water to thin out some juice if it's way to thick from what I understand. Some may disagree with the practice.
  3. You can absolutely vape 0 nic juice, many people do, especially as a last step to quiting both smoking and Vaping. Almost everyone on this thread would recommend looking up high rated recipes for your first buy, if there is a specific type of easy recipe you want. I would ask again in this sub for let's say "a delicious simple strawberry for a first time diyer" and someone will probably help point you in the right direction.
  4. Many recipes taste great right off the shake, but as always a steep will only make a good recipe better. Fruits like you were talking about typically only have a few day steep time, so if you make a bigger batch you can actually taste it melding together into perfection as you vape it over those days. From my first ones I've noticed some of my flavors have some harsher accents that fade away quickly over that time.
Hope this helps and good luck with your diy experience :)

So I enjoy dessert flavors. I tried making juice before with shitty walmart ingredients and it didn't turn out well. I usually spend $35 every other week at vapewild getting 240mL of one flavor to use for 2 weeks. This time I decided to get some of their diy stuff because it would probably go further. I got 30mL each of their wild custard, salted caramel, cookies, and creamy vanilla flavor concentrate. I also got the 100mg nicotine, 240mL of both pg and vg as well as a 20mL of sweetener. My question is roughly what percentage of Gillespie concentrate should I be using? I really like the on-cloud custard from them as well as Vapetasia's killer kustard. I figured I could make a nice salted caramel cookie and a decent custard. After all, the flavors listed for on-cloud custard are just custard and vanilla. Have you used their diy stuff before?

This is my potential recipe but I don't know if 18% of overall flavor is high or low or what. https://m.imgur.com/gallery/SkHul4y

by leapinglabratsalmost 8 years ago

Grats on taking the plunge! Alas, Vape Wild is notorious for poor supplies and shitty customer service. You might as well anticipate some issues with your order, but even if it turns out okay, consider another vendor next time.

As for the recipe, it's hard to know how to use their flavors since they are rebranded, probably from Flavor West concentrates. 13% is too high for any flavor though, drop that down at least below 10%, then let it steep for 1-2 weeks. Straight up vanilla custard won't knock your socks off, personally I would want some complementing notes of fruits or berries, nuts, spices, etc, but that is a matter of preference.

I've been krdering juice from them for like 2 years and never had any problems with my orders. I think I've only disliked one old discontinued flavor. Also, everybody's Vanilla custard always knocks my socks off lol. Thanks for the tip about the percentage though.

Recently had a buddy suggest getting the starter kit off of heartlandvapes with the kit you get 5 flavors. Wasblooking for suggestions on flavors to start with. I have found out that I really enjoy higher vg mixes. Got milkman crumbleberry and have been really enjoying that. Not asking for the exact flavors to mimic it, more of some flavors i can combine to get a similar effect? (Complete novice here) really any suggestions will be incredibly helpful

So the 5 flavors are buyers choices. I apologize if im being to vague

Take a look at this kit. More of everything for 5 bucks more. Plus that vendor seems to have good quality nic.

Flavor suggestions are TFA Sweet Raz and/or INW Raz. There are approx 1 million creams out there, but TFA Bavarian Cream, Cap Vanilla Whipped Cream, FA Fresh Cream are all safe bets, you will find plenty of uses for those. TFA Cheesecake/Graham is the most likely suspect for that part.

Be sure to pick your flavors by looking up reviewed recipes both here and alltheflavors.com And the "flavor reviews" section from the sidebar here.

When I use TFA Koolada 10% any higher than .5% in a recipe it sort of catches in my throat and makes me cough. Can anyone recommend an alternative that might be smoother? I've seen mentions of FA Arctic Winter, FA Polar Blast, FLV Cool Menthol and Axiom Icicles but there aren't flavor reviews of all of them.

If it helps to know, I've been using it in a clone of Prairie by Bigglesworth. I don't notice the catch in my throat as much in that mix, but when I use it with fruit mixes it's really bothersome. I've omitted TFA Smooth from the Prairie recipe because I don't have it yet but I wonder if that, and the Axiom Icicles instead of Koolada, might be the reason that the Prairie I've purchased in the past has never made me cough.

I was searching to see if there might be a discussion on all of them but can't find anything. Maybe a menthol roundup thread would be "cool" (sorry, I had to).

Cooling agents are just that. They don’t have the mintiness associated with menthol

After ruining a few recipes with incorrect usage of these flavors (flv cereal crunch and fried dough), i decided to give them another shot and see how it turns out. Right off of a shake and vape this is actually not too bad, but it has one stand out problem that i wanted to ask about - it has a very beer-esque aftertaste, its not too overwhelming but its there for sure. Im just wondering if it will fade out some after a steep? It does add to the authenticity of the doughnut taste, but its just a bit too powerful at the moment. Have any of you successfully used FLV Fried Dough or FLV Cereal Crunch? I read lots of mixed reviews on those two flavors and i feel like they have potential, but not much info or recipes using them.

So anyways, I think this might actually turn out to be a half decent doughnut base, but am hoping to get some good feedback on how to make it better - and whether or not the off notes will fade away after some steeping/how i can help mute/mask the off notes.

FLV Fried Dough Experiment

Ingredient|% :---|---: Crunch Cereal (Flavorah)|0.20 Fried Dough (Flavorah)|0.45 Saline (0.9% solution)|0.25 Super Sweet (CAP)|0.20 Vanilla Custard (TPA)|3.00

Flavor total: 4.11%

Remember to rate it at e-liquid-recipes.com!

Dough, Donut and some batter flavourings has that distinct beer taste, at least for me. It does steep out but for me it ruins recipe's. FA Joy in particular is a big culprit.

That is way too much Saline

by br4d24almost 8 years ago

Oh damn what's a recommended percentage for saline? I've heard conflicting reports on the amounts needed. What range do you usually use? What happens when you use too much? Nasty crab seafood water? Educate me please haha

by EdibleMalfunctionalmost 8 years ago

I don’t use it. I’ve never found a reason to use it. However, some people do, but only around a drop per 10 mls, which is less than half a percent. Adding that much saline as in your recipe would surely gunk your coils and ruin the flavor.

There will always be more flavours to add, always. It looks like a solid list, you should have enough flavourings to last a long time. Pull the trigger.

Have you looked up recipes? Is that where your list comes from?

Yes, I started with some of bull city's community receipes packages but then I started just picking flavors that sounded good lol. It got out of hand quickly as you can see

You don’t want to go about picking flavors that sound good. You may end up with bottles you will never use

The popular fa creams are fucking amazing, FA meringue, Vienna cream, cream fresh, and fa marshmallow are must haves imo. Apparently Catalan cream is good also but I haven't tried it (it should be coming soon tho!)

For a very first order? I'd leave out anything that you don't already have a plan (recipe) for, unless you know you're going to be chasing something very specific that would soon have you testing, say, several different blue raspberries or watermelons to try to find the right one for the job.

Instead of saying "leave these out" I'll shorten your list to some of the most versatile flavors that it should be super easy to find good recipes for:

Bavarian Cream-TFA:

Cactus-INW:

Cheesecake (Graham Crust)-TFA

Coconut-FA

Coconut-TFA

Cookie-FA

DragonFruit-TFA

Forest Fruit-FA

Fresh Cream-FA

Fuji Apple - FA:

Jamaica Rum-FA

Pear-TFA

Polar Blast-FA:

Sweet Guava-CAP:

Sweet Raspberry-TFA

Sweet Tangerine-CAP:

Watermelon - LA:

Wild Melon - FLV

You also have a few listed that I wouldn't recommend at all:

Blue Raspberry-FW

Green Apple-TFA

Jawbreaker-FW

Passionfruit - FA:

Pineapple FA:

Thank you for the list, I am definitely going to pull some off the list and wait until a future date to buy those flavors. Could you explain more about why you don't recommend those 5 flavors?

FW Blue Raspberry is widely regarded as not very good, same for the Jaw Breaker.

From personal experience, FA Pineapple is one of the worst flavors I've ever tried, it tastes like green onions being grilled over a tire fire. And TFA Green Apple is not the worst thing ever, but it's awfully grassy and has some acetone notes.

FA Passion Fruit is actually quite tasty -- if you're one of the very rare and lucky people who can vape it without it ripping your throat to pieces.
