October Monthly Clone Challenge
submitted almost 8 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Trick or Treat, mixers!

Are we doing this again? We are? Ok, here we go again.

/u/oldguynothumbs is the MVP of the September Challenge and will be contacted about a small token of appreciation.

The purpose behind this monthly clone challenge is to gather the community behind an effort to clone just one juice.

The subject of this month's challenge is Tripoli by Charlie Noble. Charlie Noble calls it "The taste of an exotic port-of-call, Tripoli is a finely crafted blend of aged Turkish tobaccos, fig, almonds, and rare spices" and categorizes it as a "Tobacco, Nuts" profile with "Fig, Almond, Spices" as primary flavors. I've never tried this but it certainly sounds intriguing. It was requested by /u/Guts_Rage , who said, "Almonds, Figs, Turkish tobacco, and spices. The recipe out there is ridiculous, I'm not using 10% toasted almond."

There really is an alleged clone recipe listed here that calls for 10% Toasted Almond: https://www.lediypourlesnuls.com/charlie-noble-tripoli/

... And I think I'd rather drink diesel. But there's also another recipe, maybe that one is better or a better starting place? Someone with some knowledge of TFA tobaccos will hopefully weigh in.

A reminder from the previous clone challenge posts: You are perfectly welcome to completely ignore the cloning aspect of this challenge and just consider the juice description as a prompt to create a recipe all your own with that profile. In this case, that would be some kind of Turkish tobacco with almond, fig, and spice flavors.

Please respond with recipes for Tripoli by Charlie Noble, ideas about how to start an attempt to clone that flavor, your own delicious exotic port-of-call recipe (but please, no STD-flavored juices), general thoughts about having a monthly clone challenge, hate mail, love letters, lewd artwork, dirty limericks, comments, questions, concerns, anything remotely on topic. Thank you. Love you all.

That one recipe has been floating around for at least two years now. It bears approximately zero resemblance to the actual recipe. 10% toasted is the stuff of nightmares.

I'm interested in seeing what y'all come up with. Tripoli is one of the flavors I'm the most proud of, and I love that it introduces tobacco profiles to people that think tobacco = cigarette.

Good luck, everyone!

I told myself I'd never do it but maybe I will mix that 10% toasted almond recipe in honor of this post, you, and science.

You should probably go to a doctors office and get a physical to make sure you’re in tip-top shape for what you’re about to endure. God speed

So I made the recipe and added .20 DS. After about 3-4 days steep it doesn't taste anything like Tripoli (not even close). It doesn't taste good at all, it's like a burnt piece of leather soaked in cat urine. :(

10% toasted is oral suicide

Alright, I’m going to play along this month. Not really going to clone it as much as I am going to use the profile and do my own thang with it.

Here’s what I’m doing for V1:

HS Turkish Blended- 1.25%

FLV Turkish- 1%

FLV Fig- .75%

CAP Toasted Almond- .25%

INW Sphynx Tobacco- .25% (aka S’Desert Ship)

I’ll come back with changes as they happen.

Is that enough CAP Toasted Almond to say there's almond in the profile? I haven't tried that flavor yet.

2 points

by ChemicalBurnVictimalmost 8 years agoresident tobacco specialist

I think it’ll be enough to taste it, but how much almond there will be is yet to be determined. It’s more funky toasted flavor than almond. It would probably work better with a different almond, but the only other one I have is RF SC Almond, and I’m sure that’s the right one here. Highest I think that Toasted Almond will go Here is .5%.

Alright, if anyone is still checking this post for updates, here is my final recipe for it.

I like this. It's not Tripoli, but it's a nice approach to the profile. Maybe call it...Port Brega? Second biggest city in Libya is Benghazi, figured that wouldn't be a good look. But this looks really good! I may have to make myself a bottle next time I sit down to mix.

I was hittin’ up the Wikipedia pretty hard when it came time to naming it. Almost went Oea, but didn’t know how to pronounce that. Saw that Tripoli is Greek for “three cities” and thought it had a nice ring to it.

The main focus was on the tobaccos for me, and the Almond is there just to kind of match the profile. Gives it a little body, but the taste of it is kind of buried. But I’ve been really liking it.

Hopefully you find my tribute does it justice.

Honestly, the almond is only in there as an accent/counterpoint to the fig. It was too sweet without it, and it helped make it a little smokier/drier. Figs and almonds work well together in culinary uses, so it was my first thought for the missing piece.

Awesome, man. I'm quite tempted to pick up those HS tobaccos for this.

I'm trying to think of what qualifies for 'rare spices'.. cardamom? Clove? Cinnamon? Anise? Capsaicin?

2 points

by RinVapesalmost 8 years ago

I was thinking the same thing "exotic spices"... Hmm

1 points

by juthincalmost 8 years ago

I was trying to think of just 'spice' flavors... maybe hops counts (and I have no idea how that would work in a tobacco), but other than allspice, ginger, and nutmeg (and the blends) there's not many I could think of.

2 points

by RinVapesalmost 8 years ago

Someone said cardamom which is what I was thinking... Maybe nutmeg. I may try to do an inspired recipe based on the notes. I've never had the original ejuice so I have nothing to compare to anyway

1 points

by ID10-Talmost 8 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Without trying it? Probably cardamom, maybe some nutmeg or cinnamon. Oddly neither the two supposed clone recipes on that French site suggest including any spice flavors. Maybe the tobaccos used have some spicy character to them and that's all that is referring to.

/u/guts_rage what does the spice in Tripoli taste like to you?

3 points

by Guts_Ragealmost 8 years ago

It's very light and to be honest I never thought about it before. There is some spice but I figured it was coming off the tobacco in the mix. It can very well be cardamom and I'm almost certain there is no cinnamon in the recipe. I wouldn't consider cinnamon a "rare" spice either if we go by the description. The light spice blends very well with the tobacco that's being used. This is awesome btw, never thought cardamom could possibly be in the mix. It never even dawned on me till it was mentioned.

1 points

by ID10-Talmost 8 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I will get some and check it out. If there's cardamom in there I'll probably pick it out; apparently I'm a little more sensitive to that stuff than most others. As for the tobaccos, however, there's little chance of me having the slightest clue. The only tobaccos I have much experience with are FLV and they didn't exist when this juice came out.

2 points

That's my juice in use at the moment, definitely cardamon, until you said it I couldn't put my finger on it

Alright, some new developments in my tribute attempt. 1- I didn’t much care for my first recipe. I’ll blame the Toasted Almond. Ended up going .5% just to make sure it was noticeable, and it was, but not very good. 2- Nic River has a sale this weekend and I ordered some FA Almond. Hopefully it’s better, and I’ll use that instead. 3- I think I’m gonna use INW Fortuna Strike instead of FLV Fig. It’s a darker, almost syrupy kind of prune flavor. I know the description says fig, but it’s ballpark. It’s kind of a pain to get this flavor. Basically have to order it direct unless you want to order from Wizard Labs. 4- I just tested HS Elder Captain today, and I will be using that for the Spice note.

So new recipe will likely look something like this:

FA Almond- 1% (average on ATF is 1.1%)

HS Elder Captain- .25%

INW Fortuna Strike- 1.5%

HS USA Mix- 1.25%

INW Oriental- 1%

So it’s completely different, but I have higher hopes. I’ve been working on a Turkish recipe for a while, and the new version of that has the Elder, USA, and Oriental, so I’m basically just taking a couple things out and adding a couple things.

/u/guts_rage if this new one turns out decent, and you’re in the states, I can send you some if you want. Wouldn’t expect you to have all those tobaccos to mix it up yourself.

2 points

by Guts_Ragealmost 8 years ago

Sounds awesome, fortuna strike sounds interesting (had to look up the description). Elder captain is on my next order/ re-up flavor list which probably won't happen till January as I usually order in bulk to take advantage of free shipping.

by ID10-Talmost 8 years agoWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

I'm trying Tripoli for the first time just now. Here are some first-taste impressions.

I'm not going to be trying to clone this, for a number of reasons. First of all, it's complex AF, and cloning is so much easier with simple recipes. The profile is complex (just look at the description) and the juice tastes complex. Some recipes have a way of magically making very few ingredients taste complex, but this tastes more like a lot of ingredients that are expertly not muddled. It might be clone-proof.

Also, the tobaccos. I don't have a damned clue which tobaccos they're using. They're almost certainly FA and/or TFA tobaccos, possibly INW or HS but I doubt it. And I have very little experience with those and lack the desire to try to figure them out. I hope it's not FA Desert Ship, as some have assumed in the past, or I'll have to replace my coils and wash my atty, that stuff is so lingery. But if it is, kudos to Charlie Noble for making me like something with Desert Ship (yuck!) in it. Because I do like this, very much. However, I think the same profile could be done better thanks to FLV tobaccos. They have changed the game. This could very well have been the best-tasting tobacco juice on the market when it came out in 2014 but it's 2017 now. I might steal their profile and make my own Turkish tobacco/almond/fig/spice recipe, but there are all my reasons to sit out actually attempting to clone it. I don't know if I'd ever succeed in making something this smooth that's not also too wet for this kind of tobacco vape and also distinctly sweet but not too sweet, though. It's a really finely crafted juice that /u/prettymatthew has created, for sure, and I don't pretend to be that skilled. It seems to be riding several fine lines all at once. I wish /u/feartx would make something with a nutty/figgy/spicy Turkish tobacco profile, he definitely does have the skill and experience to pull it off.

Anyway, impressions on the rest of the juice. The spicy top note is very subdued and if you told me that it's just the spiciness of whatever tobacco concentrates were used, I would believe you. You would have to ask someone like /u/ChemicalBurnVictim about which TFA/FA/INW/HS tobacco flavors are spicy. But there could also be some ginger, cardamom, and and/or cinnamon added to a not-at-all spicy tobacco. There's a strange coolness to the finish here that contributes to it's smoothness, almost like it has a minute amount of mint or menthol in there, and that reminds me of cardamom or ginger, moreso cardamom. If it's FA Cardamom you are looking at 0.25% OR LESS, quite likely a lot less, like the amount you'd need make a dilution for, as that stuff is strong and again the spice here is subdued. I don't know what ginger, if any, probably none, but ginger despite being spicy comes across kind of cool like Tripoli does. The juice has also got a warmer spice aspect to it that could be a hint of cinnamon, like a tiny around of a cinnamon bakery flavor (TFA Cinnamon Sugar Cookie or something like that, used very very low?) or FA Ceylon, but I doubt it. I do not taste anything like Nutmeg, Allspice, or Clove here and I'd like to think I could pick those out easy enough. That would rule out things like Holiday Spice and Pumpkin Spice and all of that nonsense.

For the almond note, I think that's TFA Toasted Almond but at like 1%. That 10% TFA Toasted Almond "clone" really is fucking ridiculous and can't possibly taste like anything more than it tastes like mouth breathing while simultaneously eating toasted almonds while preparing for self-immolation by dousing yourself with diesel fuel. I hope no one tries that shit. On the other hand, this tastes a lot nuttier than the nuttiness you'd get from only 1% TFA Toasted Almond. So I'd look to add another nut. I've never tried the TFA Natural Almond used in one of the so-called clones, maybe it's that. Maybe it's FA Almond. Maybe it's a different nut altogether, backing up the almond. Every few hits, I'm vaguely reminded of Peanut Butter. TFA Peanut Butter likes to steep to more of a vague, dry nuttiness, and we know PrettyMatthew likes his TFA Peanut Butter so maybe a little that. But this juice has just the right amount of dryness for a tobacco vape, and TFA Peanut Butter seems like it would be a step too far into the desert. I wouldn't rule out FA Peanut at like 0.25%, or Nut Mix, or any of the hazelnut flavors. FW Hazelnut is smooth and not too distinctly hazelnutty to read as almond when combined with almond. Could be some good old fashioned TFA Acetyl Pyrazine 5% backing up the almond. Then again, it could just be an especially nutty tobacco, which I know there are several of.

Fig - I don't know, I'm not that experienced with fig. All I can tell it is that it is delicious and my favorite part of this juice and that it is definitely not FA Fresh Fig unless there's some seriously crazy interactions going on in here. TFA Fig, FW Fig? Probably one of those figs I've never tried either of them. Then again, it could again be just a figgy tobacco; look for flavors reviews of TFA/FA/HS/INW tobaccos that mention figs, there are several.

Good luck to anyone trying to clone this, you're gonna need it.

Edit: If someone with more tobacco experience wants to try to seriously tackle this, I'll send you some Tripoli.

Man, reading all this makes me want to start all over again.

Some things that I’m thinking: HS Elder Captain might be a good candidate for the spice note. I have a tester mixed up, and my first impression took me back to when I was messing around with the cardamom for the Arrakis clone. But now I have trouble sometimes telling clove and cardamom apart because I’ve only ever used them together. So Elder Captain might actually be a bit more clove. INW S’Desert Ship is also coming to mind, but I kind of hope it isn’t that. It could be workable I think, but I don’t think I’d care too much for all the failures.

The peanut butter part makes me think of INW Tobacco Symphony with a bit of AP. Throw a little almond in there, and you could have something pretty nice.

The fig part I was thinking of trying HS Arabic. It’s got a pretty nice dark fig flavor to it.

I’d take a little sample of it if you’d send some. I could probably make a pretty good guess at the tobaccos, even if they are TFA or FA. Though if it is one of those, I probably wouldn’t be able to clone it because I got rid of all the TFA, and don’t have Desert Ship because I hate it. Tuscan Reserve tasted pretty similar to me though, so I would probably stand that in.

I can’t seem to get this damn clone off my mind. Still working on it haha. The pain in the ass part has been that fig. Got some FW on the way. Interesting development though, I licked some off the back of my hand and I taste a pretty distinct vanilla. Went through and sniffed a bunch of my vanillas, and I think it is closest to FA Vanilla Tahiti. Checked the flavor review, and it seems like it is an almond vanilla. Might be on to something! Did a test with that and FA Cardamom in there. I think I’m going to rule out the cardamom. At .15% it was still too much. Did a lick test and only tasted Cardamom. Perhaps vanilla is the secret spice that’s in there?

I should have never tasted this stuff because now I will not rest until I’ve got a good clone. I don’t even vape a lot of dessert and sweet tobaccos. But I just gotta nail it.

Mayflower: https://web.archive.org/web/20170218134330/http://charlienoble.com:80/collections/homecollection/products/charlie-noble-mayflower

Its described as: "This holiday season spend time with the Charlie Noble you love. Charlie Noble is back with a seasonal release of a lovingly spiced pumpkin pie topped with a touch of cream that would make the great admiral abandon ship and take to the shores."

That is from the 2016 release. It had a different description in 2015. Wish I could find the reviews that were on the website but I can't find them anywhere. One reviewer said it tasted like fallen leaves and I definitely get that. It tastes nothing like any pumpkin pie/spice/roll juice I have ever had. Its not spicy really, probably not as spiced as Tripoli in terms of dominance of flavor. I don't get a ton of pumpkin pie out of it either to be honest. It just kind of tastes like "fall."

I've purchased every pumpkin, yam, squash, pumpkin spice, holiday spice, etc concentrate I've been able to find and can't come close at all.

I talked to someone from CN a while back and they said they were going to release the recipe then said they weren't then told me to PM them and I did but never heard back. Seriously one of the best juices I have tried.

Why not just wait for Charlie Noble to release the recipe? They're slowly doing that with the discontinued recipes (and seasonal recipes were apparently all discontinued)...

Not a clone attempt but an experiment using what I have on hand.

1.75% Almond (FA)
2.50% Fig Fresh (FA)
0.75% Gold Ducat (INAWERA)
0.50% Liquid Amber (FA)
0.50% Perique Black (FA)
1.25% Toasted Almond (TPA)
3.25% Turkish Tobacco (Flavorah)

Flavor total: 10.5%
