Custard Creams

Finally after many attempts at getting this flavour profile to match the original flavour of the UK's favourite biscuit, I think I'm there. I'd like to say I've nailed it, but that's for you to decide.

The Description

A custard cream is a type of biscuit popular in the British Isles and Ireland. Its structure is that of a sandwich, with a creamy, custard-flavoured centre between two flat biscuit layers.

The Recipe

  • TFA Coconut 1.5%
  • CAP Vanilla custard V1 2.5%
  • TFA Whipped cream 1%
  • TFA Sweet cream 1%
  • CAP SL Biscuit 2%
  • CAP Sugar cookie 1%
  • TFA Cheesecake Graham crust 1%
  • TFA Marshmallow 0.5%

Steep Time

Minimum of 3 days, best after 5.

The Process

Custard creams are by far my favourite biscuit and I've wanted to try and recreate them in vape form for quite some time, it's taken me a while but I think I'm there, here was my thought process

  • TFA Coconut
While custard creams don't have a major coconut flavour to them, there are some very mild hints of it within the biscuit so I opted for a low percentage here. I started at .5% and slowly worked up. For me 1.5% is the sweet spot

  • CAP Vanilla custard
Clues in the name, custard cream. It needed the daddy of custard a here to give it a solid, thick custard note. I originally worked with INW custard but it just didn't hold in the mix as well as the Capella.

  • TFA Whipped cream
This brings a lighter, fluffy note to the dense custard filling, bringing it into the realm of a cream rather than a solid heavy custard

  • TFA Sweet cream
Again this works along side the whipped cream to create a custard flavoured cream filling, as opposed to just a thick custard. Originally I used just the whipped cream, but adding in a touch of sweet cream helped mould the flavour notes together, something which I struggled with the most in this recipe.

  • CAP SL Biscuit
The godsend that is capellas new silver line range. This is the best biscuit flavour I've had to date, and it's my golden ingredient in this recipe that makes the whole thing work. It brings that perfect crumbly biscuit profile that I was looking for.

  • CAP sugar cookie
While Capella biscuit is great as it is, it brings a digestive biscuit taste, which custard creams most certainly are not. In comes a touch of sugar cookie to round out the full biscuit flavour.

  • TFA cheesecake Graham crust
I thought the biscuit part of this recipe was complete with the previous ingredients, but I couldn't help wonder if a touch of Graham crust would finish it all off nicely, curiosity got the better of me so I added it in.......turns out it was a real eurika moment!

  • TFA Marshmallow
Thus tiny amount was added to finish off the cream filling. If I'm being totally honest it could possibly be omitted. But for me I feel like it just works. Can't give you a fancy description or reason, it's just one if those things......it works.

That's it! Get mixing and make sure you come back and give me some feedback

Wow. That is the first time I've looked at a recipe and actually have everyone of the flavor components to it. Great share. Thanks.

I mixed this up 5 days ago and I'm trying it out now. It's very good!

Brings back memories of Mother's Taffy Cookies that I haven't had since I was a kid. You could probably also make this based on INW Coconut Cookies, I think.

Good job!

This sounds outstanding! I'll be sure to get some sugar cookie, marshmallow, and SL Biscuit soon so I can give it a go!

very delicious indeed. I don't have Cap SL Biscuit / TFA Coconut at hand so I substituted with INW Biscuit (2%) and Craham Cracker clear (0.5%). Very very nice but probably a bit off from your original.

Without the coconut this will be a very different flavour.

I know. The Graham cracker clear was a compromise (IMHO there's a quote noticable coconut taste in there?). I only had CBV Coconut (German brand) handy which I never used and never will because it tastes absolutely disgusting.

If you have it, FW graham cracker has a noticeable coconut-biscuit taste

Did you ever try Mrs Lord's? or Vaping King's? Mrs Lords was weird because, for some reason best known to them, they used TFA Holiday Spice to add nutmeg to it (I don't know this for sure but I just bought some and it's identical to the weird note I got from their custard creams). Vaping King, despite saying otherwise, changed his recipe but back in the day of DAAP UK eliquids, it was the best vaping experience I'd ever had.

I havnt tried any commercial custard cream juice. This profile was constructed solely on the taste of the real thing

Love your recipe man! I grew up on Boland's/Jacob's Custard Creams; have the cavities to prove too. By the way, i have all the ingredients except for coconut but FW Graham Cracker has a prominent coconut flavour. I might add that to your recipe.

Great work. How about doing Kimberly mikado next? They're the pink marshmallow, strawberry jam biscuits.

Oh man I hated them things. Don't think I'll be recreating that in a hurry. Chocolate bourbons on the other hand.....

Chocolate Bourbons! now you've said it! it's like the 80s all over again ! Absolutely adored chocolate bourbons! When i was a student and broke, i lived on those things. Then would splash out on Kimberly Mikado as a treat. Do a Google image search if you're not familiar with the name cause I'm sure you'd know them by some other name. It's the simple biscuits in life that count!

Edit: realised you were referring to Kimberly Mikado. Your next mixing project is to craft a Chocolate Bourbon that's fit for a French King.

What ratio of VG/PG did you use for this recipe?

1 points

by sirfletchalotalmost 8 years agoI <3 ID10-T

You can use whatever ratio you prefer. I went with 60VG/40PG

by HugNikolasalmost 8 years ago

nice, I just started DIYing my own juice and I feel like 60/40 is just a nice happy medium more so than 70/30. what is your reasoning for doing 60/40 ratio?

I made this originally with my mtl tank in mind. I also have a batch of this mixed up in 80VG/20PG for my rda

So I thought I had the ingredients, didn't think too much, pulled out 1 ingredient at a time, and ended up subbing CAP SL with INW Biscuit, Graham Crust with Loran Cheesecake, Sweet Cream with TFA Bav Cream, and TFA Coconut with FA Coconut and TFA Coconut Extra (at mostly the same percentages, except halved the Buscuit). May have killed the recipe, I'll let you know in a week or 2 :P

Well that won't taste anything like my original recipe, but who knows, it may turn out even better.

I wouldn't have added the cheesecake in tho, the Graham crust is added for the biscuit part of this recipe, not the cream filling so not sure how that's gonna work

Ya I was tossing between that and Graham Cracker, figured as I'd already bastardised your recipe might as well personalise it and make it more desertish :-p

Loved your recipe. Was really tasty. Have to say you nailed the profile of a custard cream perfectly. As Cap SL Biscuit is a tad coconuty, I didn't use coconut but added 1% Meringue instead.

By the way, Cap SL Biscuit is a fantastic supporting flavour for Graham Cracker Clear or it makes a great sub for FA Cookie at 1% in any recipe. In that respect, it's defintely an Fa Cookie killer for me.

How much did you mix for this? Im not seeing a ml qty, or did I miss something?!

1 points

by sirfletchalotalmost 8 years agoI <3 ID10-T

You don't need to see ml quantity. This is in percentages so you can mix up as much as you'd like

Thanks...new to the DIY and had never seen without ml listing for any recipe's I've been trying !

I add maltol to this mix, less than 0.5%, and now liquid have no taste((((( it's normal???? Taste like base with sugar(((

1 points

by sirfletchalotalmost 8 years agoI <3 ID10-T

Why would you add maltol to the recipe? And have you let it steep for the required amount of time?

My friend tell me that it make taste very rich and strong, more creamy, I steep it for 3 days.
