A helpful tip for mixers as dumb as me
submitted almost 8 years ago by Popetown

Ok, so, I clearly needed a third reminder to not commit the following error as I've done this in some form two times prior to this in my ~2 years mixing so I thought I’d pass it along lest anyone else make this mistake. Three times. Like me.

When mixing up a fresh batch. Resist the urge to top off a tank or deck with any leavings from your mixing vessel. The two previous times, I’d taken the last few drops of a mix I’d made for a friend that was left in the large beaker right into a deck. What resulted was the b-reel of a snuff film of Satan’s personal porn collection. Don’t do it. It will be, not fun. First time was an honest mistake I’d never tried. Second time was me making sure that was a bad idea. Some time later recently I was filling up my large 240ml bottle and it wouldn’t quite all fit. So I put the rest into a top off of my daily unicorn bottle.

I’ve made this mix a half dozen times at least.

I was convinced I’d fucked it up in a monumental way. Like the first flavor, I spontaneously doubled or something. I rewicked. More demon porn. I’d try the tank occasionally for the next few days, thinking maybe something would magically change. More black tears. I, now, while finishing up mixing some other stuff, decided to decant the whole thing into the mixing vessel, add 10ml of VG for good measure, gave it a good thorough drill wisking, trashed the unicorn bottle’s worth, cleaned that out, cleaned my whole tank, scalding my hands in the process with hot water, rewick, filled her up. Grimaced, took a baby noob puff at 15w...no gags. Moar wattage...okay. More wattage and a real pull and...my glorious main bitch was back. Like a scorned lover finally done with the cold shoulder, it’s okay baby.

Do. Not. Vape what’s left in the vessel. Pour it in with rest in your large holding bottle if you want. And shake like it owed you money.

Good gracious, will I ever learn?

Hahaha. I upvote for the satan stuff and the black tears alone.

Heh, that’s what came to mind for me last night driving home after trying, in vain, that tank full for the last time and thinking I was quite possibly going to vomit at 55mph and crash my car because of this hate cock I’d been trying to vape.

Annnnd "Satan's Hate Cock" is the name of my new band. We'll be handing out copies of the new single, "High Speed Vomit" with the b-side "Black Tears Fill My Tank" in the parking lot of the local B&M.

Seriously, sorry to hear man, and I'll try not to do the same. Great imagery!

Hehe, glad to hear that I elicited a few chuckles. That was my intent along with offering the advice I could pass along of my own experiences. I pride myself on occasionally coming up with vivid imagery that I can put into word. It really is amazing how horrible it tasted and how wonderful it tasted after “fixing it” by re-diluting it back to the rest again and mixing well.

Or stir the stuff in your mixing vessel before filling the holding bottles :) Then you can safely use leftovers. I hate shaking, so I always stir in my mixing vessel with a milk frother.

Oh sir or madam. I stir. I beat the devil out of it. See the part about drill whisking I mention.

I have a piece of 316L which is shaped and twisted up into sort of tree shape which I then chuck into a drill and use to stir the shit out of it. 10 seconds or so and it pulls it into a nice consistent, perfectly transparent liquid with none of those little wispy threads of flavor you might see when you first stir it around.

Even with this, for whatever reason, when I’m pouring the last stream of liquid into a bottle, you can look closely and see the two densities pouring out in the flow of liquid. A tiny little stream of flavorant floating on top. It’s my theory that in the course of mixing and just the flavor adding into the beaker in the first place, some flavor must get stuck to the glass. And as this is being poured out, it’s of a higher consistency of flavoring.

Which is why I still shake the shit out of the bottle too, I just don’t have to shake until I need like I might actually be doing physical damage to my body in the course of it all.

That's interesting. But it might indeed be the glass then.

I am using lab grad glass (borosilicate) for my mixing, maybe that makes the difference?

Yep, same here. I dunno. I’m just glad my main jam is back in action.

Yup. Pyrex beaker and milk frother are amazing. I always dump the last bit from the beaker into my dripper and vape. Never had an issue ever. Just be careful not to aerate your juice too much.

Side note, I highly recommend investing in some actual lab beakers for mixing. Picked up a set of 3 on Amazon for like $20. Juice does not seem to stick to the glass as much as my food measuring beakers for some reason, and they have super accurate graduations.

An explanation for noobs as dumb as me - what happened? Was it a matter of mixing flavours, not fully mixing in the bad tasting nicotine, or the effect of hitting a pocket of inadequately diluted nicotine?

I've not mixed yet nor done this (and plan not to do it)

Heh, well, I’m. It entirely sure what is happening myself. My best guess is that it’s a sort of pocket of concentrated flavoring that is either being sort of filtered out, or isolated to the last bit of liquid that I pour out. I’m thinking that this is a result of the pouring action as I pour it all from the beaker into a bottle.

Sort of like despite the thorough mixing that I do, maybe some flavoring is already separating and floating to the top. As a stream of the liquid is poured out, and a little bit of flavoring is separating from the mix and floating “up”, a slightly more amount of VG, etc is pouring out. Well repeat this for the whole process of 240ml being poured out and the very last bit has a little bit of the flavoring of all 240ml that was slowly poured and now it’s a nightly concentrated hot spot of flavorings.

I usually try and make sure I give my beaker a chance to rest after I’ve poured it out so everything can run off the sides of the walls of the beaker and combine at the bottom again and give it one more pour just to make sure I give it every chance of making it into the bottle. I’m my idiocy, I though well, I’ll just take this leaving that isn’t going to fit in my large 240ml worth of juice and then spread back out among that and properly dilute and instead just top off this half full 30ml unicorn bottle...haha!
