The Flavor Wiki & Direction
submitted about 8 years ago by Tiptup300

Lo yall,

Link for the Lovely: [http://www.theflavorwiki.net/]

obviously still working on the flavor wiki, slowing down a bit here while I stew on a couple more discussions on where to get headed next. I got some things in the works which will really bring the ability to edit easily to the lot of you.

Here at some point I'm going to need to seek out and recruit some "reporters" or some such people to fill articles up on my next break session. Not too worried about it now since the format isn't fully consistent yet. Be aware that I will be having format guidelines and helpers to keep things consistent, but not so much that it scares away new users from adding content.

#So I'm asking a favor of you all....

What are some elements you don't like, and some you do like about what you've heard or seen about The Flavor Wiki. Any input is helpful! Give me what you think and I'll have your thoughts kicking around in my head as I stew on my next directions.

#Thank you all, and I love you.

Oh and only like 3 more months till the Unofficial 2017 Community Mixing Awards, cool

If you could... a 'help wanted' page that just lists flavors which need reviews could be useful. I may have several kicking around that I could try doing some, once my other RDAs show up.

Also, a 'clone' section might be useful. Yes, we have the 'clone request thread' but having a place to just look up recipes that have been cloned already might be useful to some. (Obviously, searching on the flavor name and the flavor profile would be ideal, but just the name is probably the place to start.) Or maybe have the ability for users to create a 'clone' page for a given juice, that defaults to an empty shell page, and a script could add that to another 'help wanted' page, and mixers could either add a recipe or a link to a recipe for any 'clone' page.

A help wanted page currently exists. link It just isn't up to date with the changes made from the first implementation.

After the next implementation and it's easy to update this information, the Concentrate To-Do List page will be updated.

Clones

This is planned but down far a ways. Two different "modules" need implemented. One are pages for Premium Juices pages which is waaay down the line.

And the other is the ability to post recipes or Recipe pages. This will be sooner, but still a ways out. Also will include the ability to press a button that copies a reddit compliant format, so you can copy and paste to reddit real easy.

Well, looks like I have at least one test to do that I hadn't planned yet...

At the risk of seeming stupid / uninformed / newbieish ... where is said "Flavor Wiki"? Doesn't appear to be Wiki/FAQ or Flavor Reviews in the sidebar. Did I miss something? Can we get a linkey?

Oh, and for what it's worth I really enjoy the way /u/concreteriver and /u/chrisdvr1 format their flavor reviews. You probably wouldn't need the test setup part, but I feel like the way they present the rest of the information would work well as a standard template for a flavor wiki.

Cheers, and thanks for your efforts (even though I haven't seen them!)

No man, I appreciate it. I should have linked it. No worries!

I'm working with some of the mods currently to get the wiki integrated more with the subreddit. Since it's still in progress and has such a high volume of just shell concentrate pages I don't feel it's the right time to push to have direct links or anything quite yet.

As for the format, our greatest inspirations for how flavor pages are designed are ConcentrateRiver, and T_Mace reviews. With less emphasis on a single user review, and more a conglomeration of information from posts, comments, and reviews sourced from /r/diy_ejuice. The content of the flavor concentrates has been getting shaped up more recently and is getting a bit more solid, but it's still a work in progress and I'm hoping to have a few good examples soon in the future.

I do have a bit of a wip template here

Thank you for your thoughts!

Hey, /u/Tiptup300.. I just noticed the suggestions in the search are case-sensitive. For example, typing "cap swe" comes up with no suggestions, but typing "CAP Swe" comes up with all of the CAP Sweet ______ flavors as suggestions. Just wanted to let you know! :-)

The current system for search has been under my eye for a bit. Definitely something to take a look at, thank you!

I'm a bit late to the party, but I ultimately see what you're doing with this project. (I think)

I see it as a valiant effort to compile everything you find on this sub with some added images, however, I question your reasoning for doing so since it's already compiled neatly here... (without fancy images of course)

> ...since it's already compiled neatly here...

It's really not though is it?

We constantly get new people or not-even new people posting a new thread asking the same questions repeatedly over and over.

The subreddit has gallons of great information, but it's all scattered, and it's all discussion as opposed to actually ORGANIZED and filtered data.

For example if I were to want to find out about FlavourArts current version of Yogurt, I would be creating a bit a research project for myself, going through comments, various posts, finding certain people who make off comments about it, deciding if that's the "current" version of the old one.

And addition finding flavorings you might like. A lot of beginner advice is to never just buy a concentrate because it's something you might like, like cherry for instance. Most companies do it wrong, or the ones that do it right require a very specific range of percents to get it working. Most advice for situations like that is to do your own experiementing which can takes literal months for some flavors. I don't think that's reasonable.

Or even flavorings that nobody has tried yet. Right now their just sitting on bullcity, on ecx, wherever. And people might be interested, they might be fantastic flavors, but nobody has tried them yet. This will be a list of all the unknown, untested flavors. Neatly organized.

In it's current state, The Flavor Wiki isn't even started yet. I have miles of work to do, but down the line it'll be the perfect resource for an experienced mixer, and a newbie who is just getting started. All neatly organized.

That's not getting into the backend stuff that's not being utilized much in the frontend.

EDIT

Went back and read what I said in the morning, I believe I came off a little aggressive, I apologize about that, I didn't mean it in that way. I really appreciate the question because you're doing a great job with the subreddit flavor wiki organizing reviews. The Flavor Wiki itself, right now I'm partnering just with diy_ejuice because of familiarity but down the road we're looking into pulling information from /r/ecr, vaping underground, blogs like chefjohn, mixer youtubers, ATF, ELR, and other forums. All properly cited for reference and credit.

I appreciate the question as I feel it gives me the opportunity to describe some of the tertiary goals of the project.

If you've ever tried to find information here, unless you are really skilled at framing search queries or just have a shitload of spare time, you'd agree that while the information may be compiled here,by no means is it compiled 'nicely'. A resource that gives at quick glance the typical usage range for a particular flavor? That prevents using 20x too much in a recipe if one doesn't find the right post that mentions it.
