Can anyone help an apparent dumbass with All The Flavors?
submitted about 8 years ago by tboneathome

I have approximately 25 flavors (New Mixer) on both ELR and ATF. What can I make on ELR returns probably 200 recipes, ATF returns 1! Any ideas where I might be screwing up?

I've got 187 flavors in my stash, and 20 recipes that I can make on ATF. 14 of those are mine.

I need more flavors and better skills.

Add the +1 or +2 filter to your search, that will show recipes you are only missing 1 or 2 flavors for, and you may be able to make subs based on your stash.

Will that work with the what can i make search or only with a specific recipe search?

It works with what can I make

I usually just search for the main flavour I want in a recipe, organise by rating and read through the top 20 or so to see commonalities between them. Then I make my own recipe based on those ideas, subbing in flavours I have that are the same ballpark or ordering in others if warranted.

This is the part I'm still getting comfortable with. Thanks for your help.

I don't overthink it really, if a recipe calls for a Blueberry Candy by Cap and I've only got a straight up Blueberry by TPA, I'll just chuck that in instead.

I know there's gonna be variations between all the different types of Blueberry flavours from different manufacturers, but I can't really justify purchasing them all anyway.

When you sub in another flavor, do you sub it at the same percent, or look up recommended percentage in mix and go with that?

You aren't screwing up necessarily. Each site has different recipes... pretty sure ATF has less public recipes.

by tboneathomeabout 8 years ago

I guess out of 25 flavors, I expected more than 1. Do you know anyother sites besides the 2 mentioned that have this function?

And you may have bought less popular versions of flavors (ie: any apple other than FA Fuji, lemonade from other than LA, etc.) So there may be recipes for the same general flavors, but not the exact versions you have.

I actually picked the majority of them from the My First Order Flavors post on the sidebar, although it's more heavily skewed towards fruit flavors. Thanks for the help and the suggestion.

I'm going to make a suggestion that most people will also give you.

Every couple of weeks find a few well regarded recipes from well known mixers that you'd like to try. Buy just the flavors needed to mix those recipes.

Repeat this about twice a month for 8 months and you'll soon find yourself with about 300 of the most popular flavors and be able to mix most recipes.

They're always be those 1 or 2 that you don't have. No big deal. Place a couple of small $20 orders each month.

P.S. Start off buying the smallest bottles you can (10-15ml). When you run out if that flavor quickly, restock with the next size up (30ml). If you run out quickly again, move up to the next larger size (4oz).

Instead of buying a few flavors every couple of weeks I would recommend just taking note of those flavors and then either order during a sale or at least waiting until you have enough to hit free shipping.

Ordering just a few flavors every two weeks is going to rack up some serious shipping costs and often the price of shipping is enough to have gotten a few other flavors instead.

A $20 order a month over the course of a year would be 240. Add in about $5 for shipping each time and that's another $60 a year or 1/4 of your budget lost to shipping costs and that's not counting the cash saved on sale. Given those same figures waiting until you have enough for free shipping and a sale would result in getting you ~$360 in flavorings vs $240 translating to ~60 10-15mls of new stuff to try from most companies or 3 15mls from flavorah.

Meh. There aren't enough sales often enough to worry about waiting for. And all things considered, $60 for shipping over a year is nothing compared to the cost of a week of smoking a pack a day.

>$60 for shipping over a year is nothing compared to the cost of a week of smoking a pack a day.

Which is a completely irrelevant point since no one here smokes. $60 is nothing compared to the cost of an A1 Abrams either but that doesn't really matter in the context of the post or the sub.

>There aren't enough sales often enough to worry about waiting for.

Not counting random sales, of which there are a lot, there is a holiday sale almost every month with a few exceptions.

You're looking at about a $120 in savings just by virtue of waiting, often only a few weeks, and about 60 new flavors for what would essentially be free compared to ordering outside of sales and below minimum free shipping amounts.

A lot of us to have money to waste(it would take me ~6 weeks of saving to have that $60 in disposable income because of my budget and I would be getting less for my money) but even if you did have money to burn its still a poor financial decision to waste money you don't have to and get a lower return on it.

Inerestlingly that's how I started out to make a real simple recipe Strawberry Fuzz from Niquid. Not even close. I followed the recipe exactly and ALL I taste is TFA Honeydew @3% then 1%, still a no go. I've had better luck since then. Really sound advice that you gave and that I'm trying to follow. I can't envision 300 flavors yet.

I've only been at it for about 11 months and I have near 500. I need to take inventory again.

Flavor acquisition, she is addicting, no? Myself, over 400 so far.

It's kinda satisfying when you look at recipes with 8 or 10 flavors and realize you have everything on hand to make them.

I don't use ATF, but on ELR if you're not careful about using the preferred spelling/nomenclature for each flavor, you won't get matches. Is that maybe the case on ATF?

2 points

by tboneathomeabout 8 years ago

Yeah, it was pretty straight forward. Start typing and choose the correct one in the list. I've verified they're all good. Something I'm not doing right, just don't know what it is.

ATF tends to have more tried and true recipes. ELR just has a lot of recipes; good and bad.

One thing you can do to pop up more stuff is to add stuff that is similar to what you have. So if you have 10% AP then just tick off all the AP's listed and adjust when you mix.

A lot of people like sweetener in their juice but most of the time it can be left out. You can add those in to your stash and then depending on the recipe judge whether you think it is really needed.

That should pull up more results.

There are 10 times as many recipes on ELR as there are on ATF. People are very selective about what they share on ATF. On ELR... not so much.

If you use the +1 or +2 function (Menu, What I can I make?, Filter, scroll down to +1 or +2) it will give you recipes you can almost make. You might then be able to make some substitutions using what you do have. If you have any questions about substitutions, you can ask them in the New Mixer's Questions' thread. If you found something that you just can't use a sub for and get anything close to what the creator intended, at least you'll know what to order next.

25 is not a lot of flavors. You seem like a good candidate for posting in this thread: https://www.reddit.com/r/DIY_eJuice/comments/6yucei/weekly_suggest_a_recipe_for_my_flavors_thread/

Or next week's version of that, which goes up tomorrow.

Of the 200 recipes you found on ELR, there's a good chance half or more of them are horrid. There's no reason, before wasting your supplies on one, not to post the recipe in the New Mixer's questions thread and ask, should I try this or no?

Happy Mixing.

I have run into this a bunch. The best thing I learned to do was to go through the recipes first, pick what I wanted, and ordered flavors accordingly. After you do this a couple times, you'll start finding you have most of the flavors other recipes have, and might just be missing 1 ingredient. Then you add that to a list until you have enough worth placing an order. Rinse and repeat.

Hello suspected new mixer. Please consider deleting this post and refer to the stickied New Mixer's Thread for this week which can be found at the top of the page or in the sidebar.

Please take a moment to read through the sub rules and indulge yourself in the plethora of information over in the sidebar. Failure to do so may result in a ban.

All those good combinations can be hard to figure out so atm I ended up using my default base flavors and then adding some desired main flavor (mostly fruits):

  • tfa Bavarian cream 1-2%
  • tfa Whipped cream 0.5-1%
  • tfa Marshmallow 1-2%
  • drop stevia

And then adding some nice fruit like Cantaloupe (fa) or tangerine as main flavor. Always ends up to be good after some days of steeping.
