Hello everyone I your need help!
I have made 4 or 5 diy ejuices from http://e-liquid-recipes.com all with 5 stars and hundreds of people saying how great they are but all of mine have hardly any flavour?
I've tried making:
Dinner lady lemon tart remix Jammy doughnuts Frosted flakes Ella's Shortbread biscuit Lucky charms
I have use the same flavours from the same makes all brought from good company's and I use my pg/vg and nic from dark star vapour which has loads of good reviews and is a uk based company.
Is there something I'm missing? I assume I'm doing the measurements right?
For etc if I needed 2% of TFA sweet strawberry and I'm marking 50ml then it's 1ml I need?
I have even steeped them now (by shaking them a few times and opening the bottles to let fresh air in) and they have been sitting on a shelf in a cool dark place for 4 weeks but still nothing!!!
Also I'm using a goon rda which gets great flavour from shop bought e juices but when I try my diy juices in it they have hardly and flavour? What's worse is when I try them in a tank (unwell crown 1 and smok tfv8) I get no flavour at all???
Someone please help me!
"For etc if I needed 2% of TFA sweet strawberry and I'm marking 50ml then it's 1ml I need?"
Why are you trying to calculate it yourself? You put how much you want to make in and it'll tell you the exact measurements you need.
Hi and thanks for answering me.
I'm using recipes from online and they say for example:
Sugar cookie Capella 1%
So as I'm making 50ml that's 0.5ml
Hope that makes sense?
Yes but if you're using http://e-liquid-recipes.com you click the wrench and click adapt and put how much you want to make and what nic % and it'll tell you how to mix it.
But yes 1% at 50ml is .5ml. You have to be mixing something wrong though.
Yeah I guess I must be?
Right this is what I do for example a 50ml mix of Ella's shortbread biscuit:
I use dark star nic which is 18mg 10ml bottles and they say is basically 1.7ml per 10ml for a 3mg vape. So I add 8.5ml of nic.
I then add the flavours as the website says:
Acetyl Pyranzine TPA 0.5% = 0.25ml Biscuit Inawera 1.5% = 0.75ml Sugar cookie Capella 4% = 2ml vanilla custard v1 Capella 2% = 1ml vanilla shisha Inawera 1% = 0.5ml
Flavour Total = 4.5 ml
With nic = 13ml
I then top it up with a pre mix of 85% VG and 15 % PG (this is what darkstar suggest to use to make a 70/30 mix once a the flavours are added as they are PG based)
And then steeped it for 4 weeks.
Hope this makes sense.
One thing no one has said here, it does take a little time to get used to if you are coming off commercial juices. Because they are laden with sweetener.
Just recently I went into vape shop for the first time in 2 years. I wanted to try to get a little inspiration and ideas of flavor combos (and I didnt have anything better to do). Really nice setup of 30 subtanks to try all the juices. I must have tried most of them, and every single one was loaded with sucralose.
After leaving, right away I couldn't taste my own juice. Very weak. For the rest of the day it sucked. Next morning I was fine, back to full flavor again. Could it be that you haven't given it a few days, while staying away from non-sweetened juices?
Break it down a little, buddy. Make yourself 15ml of just the pg/vg mix and one flavoring, and see if you can taste that. If you can't, try a little more flavoring, see if there is a difference. Don't waste any of your nic and start with just one flavor. After that, try it with another flavor or a blend of two. Tiny little samples. They should have noticable flavor even without steeping.
This will let you figure out fast, cheap, and easy whether the problem is "I can't taste these flavors at the % i'm using, and need more", or "I'm using too much flavor and its muted", or "I taste the flavor, it's just not sweet", or something else. It's basically what people do to test or review a new single flavor... they try it in a vg/pg mix at 1%, then 2%, then 3%, until it gets strong. After working out how the flavor tastes, for them, by itself, it's much easier to use it in a mix with confidence.
That's great advise and I'm definitely going to start doing that! I guess I kind of figured I might as well have a go with one of them and it's seems good now but your right and I'm gonna start doing that and try making some new ones from scratch.
This whole thing has made one thing clear to me... these mass produced e juices must be hard to make as I can't make one that only I like let along thousand of people! lol
Ah, I wasn't suggesting juice from scratch so much as a demo to figure out the "no flavor" situation. I suspect you're either using too little flavor, not enough flavor, or interpreting a relative lack of sweetness as "no flavor". This approach of one ingredient at a time is how to figure out which of those three problems it is, with minimal wasted flavoring.
Unfortunately you might be an under taster (not sure that's a thing but whatevs) for instance you say store bought juice tastes good but to me it is overwhelmingly sweet and over flavored and I got flavor fatigue or vapors tongue from vaping as little as 10ml depending on the juice. Now as a general rule of thumb different flavoring companies have different flavoring strengths. If you take a TFA flavor and enjoy it at 5% and try the same with INW or FA you typically will have just ruined your juice as INW and FA are typically much stronger with a general flavor mix percentage of 0.25-%2 so as you can see there are a fuck ton of variables.
If I were you I would use a juice calculator from
http://e-liquid-recipes.com
And find the recipes you mentioned click the wrench tab and adjust the flavor percentage of the mix and up it by like %10-%20 mix them up and try it if it's still under flavored up it again until you reach the flavor you want
Good lord. 10-20%? No. This is terrible advice. That's going to mute the hell out of any recipe you do that to
Thanks for your reply and I will definitely do that.m later today. I'll post back on here how I get on.
Thanks again
Do not listen to that advice. That's going to actually mute the flavor of your juice. I believe your actual problem is that you are breathing your juice. Stop doing that. Leave the cap on.
It sounds like he is an under taster or some other strange variable we are not aware of is at play but if he is breathing his juice for extremely short periods of time (IMO there is no reason to do that unless the base concentrates we're alcohol based but some people swear by it) it should not be affecting the flavor that much. There are quite a few people who come from vaping commercial juice to DiY that find it extremely underwhelming until there taste buds adjust due to the fact that a large portion of DiY recipes use much lower flavoring and sweetener percentages then commercial juices. If he is finding his recipes week in flavor increasing the mixes in small (10-20% of base recipe) sounds completely reasonable to me.
My other concern is he was not originally using a calculator. The math he was using looked correct but I find it much easier to keep my percentages and mixes straight by using a calculator then off the top of my head. A decimal point can make a large difference with some of these concentrates.
Did you see my reply about %10-%20 of the base recipe not %10-%20 net. I thought that would have been very clear but I think edible just skimmed my comment. He has tons of experience and is veteran mixer but again he didn't get what I was trying to say.
As someone that is used to commercial juice and heavy flavoring it's normal to find diy recipes a little light in flavor. If you don't want to try and wait for your taste buds to adjust to the lighter flavoring and you have ruled out other factors to try some recipes that are heavily flavored or to adjust the percentage of the Recipes you are finding light. I find a lot of commercial juices to contain between %20-%25 flavoring which I consider heavy just to give you a frame of reference my sweet spot for my own recipes is between %10-%15 flavoring but again as with everything its relative
Get a mixer to stir it up. If you don't have one, then use a drill. Mixing is way better than shaking. It might help. From reading your comments, your %s seem right on, so that's not what you should be worried about, but maybe try upping to 15%, but at least you are doing your math right.
If you are new to DIY it is going to take a little time for your tastes buds to adjust. Most commercial liquids are over flavored due to the majority of people using subohm tanks with wide open airflow. I suggest closing your airflow down a bit or even trying a flavor rda like a hadaly clone and of course giving yourself some time to acclimate to lighter flavors.
Invest in some scales, It'll make mixing more easy and accurate, I've been DIYing since about march, I always mix up new recipes in 10ml bottles to test out, once I'm happy with it, I'll mix up a 100ml
For a spot on lemon tart I recommend a one shot that works everytime mixed @ 15% [here] (https://www.bigjuiceuk.co.uk/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=53_58&products_id=1223) buy it from [here] (http://stores.ebay.co.uk/bigjuiceuk/) with free delivery
Thanks mate I'll give it a go! Any others on there you recommend?
black jack @ 15% just like the old penny chews
cherry cola @ 15-20% is nice
check the site [here] (https://www.bigjuiceuk.co.uk/index.php?main_page=index&cPath=53) lists all the flavours with recommended ratios and some have reviews, everything I've tried besides key lime pie has been very tasty
Sorry missed that out but yes I do that every time too. I have even give some to friends to try and they have said the same thing "don't taste that strong"
I really am stumped?
have you tried just shake n vape? leaving the cap off for 4 weeks (while steeping) is probably letting out most of your flavor
Sorry I may have confused you? I meant to say I steep them with the lids on and only take them off for matter of seconds to get fresh air into them maybe once a week
He means did you try vaping them right away, right after you mixed the juice? Sometimes flavors don't need to be steeped to taste good.
He then adds that opening the bottle might be letting out the flavor compounds, but I think he misinterpreted your saying you opened the bottles in your OP as keeping them open for periods of time (as did a few others!)
Right so I'm sitting here and thought sod it!
I decided to up my percentages like so:
If it said 2% sweet strawberry and I put in 1m in for a 50ml mix l I topped it up to 2ml and did the same for all of the ingredients.
Just vaped it and it tasted much better! Not sure what it will be like in a few weeks but it can't get any worse (I hope lol)
