August Monthly Clone Challenge
submitted about 8 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Howdy, mixers!

I nearly let this newish fun feature die out after a relatively lackluster response last month but /u/WorstAdviceROC wants it to live, so here we go again.

I think we have to give MVP of the July Challenge to /u/kewkewmore who actually put some effort into it. They will be contacted about a small token of appreciation.

The purpose behind this monthly clone challenge is to gather the community behind an effort to clone just one juice.

The subject of this month's challenge is ?Mystery? by Air Factory, which has been described as "a tasty taffy candy with a delicious mixture of berries and an assortment of sweet fruits to keep you guessing." This was requested by /u/dbrown1225, who described it as "dead on white airhead mystery flavor."

A reminder from the previous clone challenge posts: You are perfectly welcome to completely ignore the cloning aspect of this challenge and just consider the juice description as a prompt to create a recipe all your own with that profile. In this case, that would be whatever the hell a white Airhead tastes like.

Please respond with recipes for ?Mystery? by Air Factory, ideas about how to start an attempt to clone that flavor, your own delicious hodgepodge fruit taffy recipe, general thoughts about having a monthly clone challenge, hate mail, love letters, lewd artwork, dirty limericks, comments, questions, concerns, anything remotely on topic. Thank you. Love you all.

I've heard it was just a random airhead with no food coloring?

It probably is. I know I had some Air Heads in middle school but that was more than two decades ago and I don't remember eating a white one.

...as I keep reading, found that they just take the left over flavors from a batch, mix them together, add no food coloring and call it a mystery.

The list of flavors used in the candy are....

Cherry, Strawberry, Blue Raspberry, Orange, Watermelon, Pink Lemonade, Green Apple

Since the white mystery flavor is a random blend of those, there isnt really a wrong way to do it. I will play around and try to come up with something that tastes good.

I wonder if the juice has that taffy texture?

by noahdblevinsabout 8 years ago

When I tried it, I was not aware of what flavors were in it. It had been a decade easily since I had them.

Most of what I got was blue razz and watermelon, with a lemon hint on exhale. I was also able to pick out cherry and apple, because they are flavors I do not like. It left an impression because I enjoyed it even though it contained flavors I have never liked. The other flavorings I did not detect, or at least could not discern them.

That juice confuses the palette, but in a good way.

Edit: another possibility is that I could not discern the last flavors because they may not have been present in my batch....and leaving out a flavor or two from each batch would make them even more true to form with the candy.

It does. I tried it at a local shop a while back.

The juice is fairly wild. You get different notes as you vape it, but Im not sure if that is part mental after being told you are supposed to, or if they truly nuanced the flavors so perfectly.

It really is very good, just too expensive for my blood.

Okay. I played around some and I think I am pretty close here. I ordered flavors I normally wouldnt buy for this, because I wanted it to work.

All flavors used are Flavor West

  • Salt Water Taffy 4%

  • Watermelon 0.75%

  • Strawberry 1%

  • Pink Lemonade .75%

  • Black Cherry 1%

  • Blue Rasberry 1.25%

  • Green Apple 1%

  • Natural Blood Orange 1.25%

Total Flavoring 11%

I cannot claim it to be 100% cloned because the flavor feels like it has subtle changes as you vape. I also believe the original either uses a little sweetener, or candy variation of fruits. I didnt have time to get my order in and get several variations in before months end.

Natural Orange, Watermelon Candy, and Double Apple should all be suitable subs.

Good timing my man! My sister in law came in last week and had the mystery juice. Went searching for a clone recipe and came up empty handed. I got a few tank fills from her and could taste the taffy, watermelon, razz, and apple. Really liked it.

Already had watermelon and strawberry FW here, but I just picked up the rest of those flavors tonight from FW and will be giving this a whirl when they come in. Thanks!!

You may want to adjust a little to your own tastes, but I hope you enjoy it!

Well got the flavors in today to try this one out! Did want to ask about your 11% recommendation. I usually go for 15-20% flavoring, did you find it too strong if used in a higher amount?

I'm going to whip up a 10ml bottle of the ratios you came up with then add that to my base in order to make my life easier if I want to make a couple of bottles at the same time. Guess I'll probably start with a few 10ml till I get comfortable then make a 60ml bottle of the 11% to yield 10 30ml bottles at 20% flavor.

Just wanted to say, it was my first time attempting to really clone a name brand juice. It was fun trying to figure it out and balance it. I look forward to participating in the future if these challenges keep coming!

I just tried it and it's not very close at all. They use a higher flavoring % than that. Also yes 2% taffy is spot on their candy base. 3.5% sour and 1.5% sweetner.

Feel free to add more flavoring. It was plenty for me to taste it well.

Oooooh, that sounds absolutely heavenly. If someone can figure it out, and can get the taffy flavor in the juice as well, I have a feeling I'll be ordering some more flavors.

I'm thinking CAP Strawberry Taffy but it could just be some marshmallow/whipped cream/vanilla swirl shenanigans.

by noahdblevinsabout 8 years ago

I would be willing to bet that it is comprised entirely of Flavor West flavorings.

FW has salt water taffy, and literally every flavor from my list. Sadly, a few of them have the D/A/AP warnings, so I will choose to not use them.

If I am right, there is no way I can do a spot on clone.

I posted this years ago- not sure if it will be of any use to anyone:

Blue Airhead Candy

Ingredient|% :---|---: Blueberry (INAWERA)|0.75 Peach (Juicy) (TPA)|4 Raspberry (Malina Koncentrat) (INAWERA)|2 Sucralose 10%|0.25

Flavor total: 7%

Is there an easy conversion between Sucralose and CAP Super Sweet?

I'd like to avoid having to buy another bottle.

2 points

by meanrockSDabout 8 years ago

I would try CAP super sweet at 0.15% and adjust to taste. CAP Super sweet does have sucralose in it, but they don't disclose the concentration; it also has citric acid and sodium citrate in it which changes the sweet flavor slightly.

by WorstAdviceROCabout 8 years ago

Isn't it 20% Sucralose?

I own about 400 different flavors and these clone challenges keep revolving around flavors I don't own.

I demand that we do Fusion by Halo next clone challenge!

Post an impassioned plea for it in the clone request thread

It's just a unflavored base... but tastes like fresh spring water straight from a mother's teet topped off with a premium finish of sucralose.
