Is it Possible to have Flavor Substitution Resource on the Side Bar?
submitted about 8 years ago by geb999

First this sub is great resource and I have a suggestion I think might make it better. It's possible what I'm looking for already exists and if it does just point me in the right direction and it will be appreciated. I often mix the recipes of others rather than make my own creations (though I do mix some juices based on my own input) as I'm sure many other people do. While many want to become great mixers there are others, like myself, who simply want to vape good juice and don't have much interest in making new recipes. A common question I see over and over is about flavor substitutions for recipes. Since there are literally hundreds of flavors from several different manufacturers it's unlikely most of us will have the exact flavors in many recipes we'd like to try. While every flavor and juice is going to be unique, a resource which gives possible subs for various flavor would be really useful and could potentially cut down on the inevitable "can I sub so and so" questions. Of course sub questions can often only be answered in a very general way, nonetheless such a tool could help while mixing recipes. As an example I just saw a recipe which has FLV Cookie as an ingredient . I don't have FLV cookie but do have CAP Sugar Cookie and FA Cookie (Biscotto). If there was someplace I could look up "cookie flavor" or "strawberry flavor" generally which gave info on how it works as a sub for other cookie or strawberry flavors, I could use that info rather than a post asking about possible subs. If this request makes no sense giving the individual nature of each flavor that's fine too. But I can't help but think some general, basic guidance on subs would be useful for many novice mixers like myself. thanks.

If there are possible subs for flavorings in a mix you can ask the OP of the recipe if they can be changed out or research the flavors and compare them yourself to see if that flavor really provides anything different than what you have to sub it out with.

This would be honestly a pretty short list. Let's take your FLV Cookie as an example. FLV Cookie tastes like vanilla,sugar and flour mixed together and ready to be baked. It's not a complete cookie flavor. It's meant to be mixed with other bakeries to finish the flavor. FA Cookie is a generic chocolate chip cookie flavor with no chocolate flavor with more emphasis on the baked flavor. CAP Sugar Cookie is a sweet doughy sugar cookie and is incredibly useful for a blender and main sweet sugar cookie flavor. None of these flavorings are interchangeable and all of them have different uses.

Short answer would be I don't think this would be useful. Too many flavoring companies do the same flavor but a lot different from each other. Reading the flavoring notes behind the mix will help you understand why the creator chose to use that particular flavoring over another company's equivalent.

We get this question probably once a month, sometimes in mod mail as a direct request.

The short answer is no.

The long answer is no... one wants to dedicate the hundreds and hundreds of hours it would take to test all these flavors against each other, then align them in a way that is in any way legible- for free, for a subreddit that, in all reality, has become really just a resource for beginners. For instance, let's say that you can sub X,Y, and Z for A; but you can't sub Y for Z. This hobby is full of all sorts of odd logic like this, and trying to relay that information into a single resource would take way to much time for no reward, and really no significant recognition.

fair enough. I hate when I try to recreate the wheel. I looked for a similar question before posting but not much came up in my search. Probably not me, but someone could likely make a pretty penny by publishing (e-publishing?) an e-juice flavor bible. I agree diy e-juice is a resource for beginners and you can find good info on most of the common and many of the more obscure flavors but often only after much pecking and searching and playing with search terms. I'm fairly certain there's a market for a book of some sort that puts all the flavors together in one spot. I do appreciate the feedback.

You severely underestimate how cheap the majority of people in this hobby are ;)

I mean, every time I needed to substitute something I just googled for flavor notes on Reddit, you know the Masters always got you. Then if I couldn't find an answer to my question there, on I go to Google again, to find someone asking about substituting whatever for whatever. Get creative with your terms and you'll find it by the second search. If not, you're bad at Google or no one else asked that question. (;

My point is, between what you've already said (searching the internet for the same question you have) and actually single flavor testing your flavors, you're like 100% covered. Just don't be lazy, get excited and let that drive you.

Gotta agree with this. Example is skidz' own Arbor. When I first mixed this i didn't have HS Apple mix, so I used INW Two Apples. When I got the HS in, I remade it, and while it wasn't night & day, it was a distinctly different mix.

With very few exceptions, every flavor is a distinct and unique profile. You can often get close, but most substitutions will not be 100% faithful to the original.

There are very, very, very few flavors that can be substituted for an exact replacement in a recipe. People use certain flavors in a recipe for a reason. You are in your own if you want to substitute something. Will it change the recipe? Yes. Will it ruin it? Highly doubtful, but as I said, you are on your own. This is DIY E-juice for a reason. Have fun with it, switch it up. Experiment. Live, Love, Learn.

If possible, to any useful degree, this would be fantastic. Clearly there are some unique flavours but others are more personal preference when choosing one over another. Clearly a substitute is unlikely to give the same result in a mix but getting close and therefore having another recipe to use is useful.
