CAP Grenadine
submitted about 8 years ago by ConcreteRiveraka IceT'sHamSandwich

Setup: Recoil w/ flavor barrel, Dual 15 wrap 26g 3mm Nifethal 70 coils @.13 ohms. 60w power, 450F temp limit. Full Cotton Wicks.

Testing: CAP Grenadine, 2 and 4%, 60/40 VG/PG, Steeped 6 days.

Flavor Description: Nightmare cherry. There is some syrupy cheap grenadine sweetness in there, but the first thing you notice is a face full of those weird, harsh, gasoline or plastic off notes that are depressingly common from cherry flavors. Good grenadine is basically pomegranate syrup, and I can't really taste anything resembling pomegranates. Tastes more like bright red maraschino cherry syrup. No real tartness in here, more of a chalky artifical cherry candy sweetness. Personally I'd give it a pass, but if you are going to use it I'd keep it under 3% to limit some of those off-notes.

Inhale is sharp and bitter from those medicinal plastic off notes. There's a syrupy sweetness underneath, but it just drags the inhale to full on cough syrup. Medium density, but pretty harsh. Exhale has a whole lot of those off-notes right up. Cheap plastic off-gassing, gasoline, bitter florals. Some candy cherry sweetness comes out in the back end. Really light tartness that you'd expect from a decent grenadine, but a whole lot closer to a chalky cherry candy. There is some syrupy sweetness in there, but those off-notes come roaring back in on the tail end of the exhale, with a lingering bitter plastic taste. Medium density, but the throat hit is kind of hellacious.

Off-flavors: Really prominent bitter, floral gasoline and plastic.

Throat Hit: Harsh.

Uses & Pairings: Really, I don't think this is the best option for any mix. This doesn't taste a lot like pomegranate syrup, so I'd skip all of the realistic grenadine applications.

This is gnarly, even for lowered cherry standards. I wouldn't use it anywhere you wanted maraschino cherries either.

Notes: Concentration testing, this is less bad at lower percentages. At 1% I still get a helping of off notes, but they aren't particularly intense. Underlying sweet artificial cherry is pretty weak though. 2% is a little fuller. I'm still getting off flavors, but the sweetness is a little clearer. 3% has a decent-ish sweetness to it and the off-notes aren't that much worse than 2%. 4% has really intense off notes. 5% is pretty much unvapable with those off flavors getting extremely bitter.

FA Pomegranate isn't perfect but that and some sweetener would probably be my best bet on a grenadine that tasted like a pomegranate was involved at some point.

Second Opinions: Hey, some people don't hate this?

Here's the ELR Page. We got camps on here, people. User "Devils Advocate" calls it "Bitter, cherry, almond, the almond looking thing in a peach pit, citrus, spray paint." User "Quakas" has a review that (via Google Translate from Portuguese) reads like a tone poem of awfulness: "Strangely and after 2 versions know the bitter almond, here in the original packaging the grenadine continues to know the bitter almond, absolute disillusionment fails to take the test." On the other hand /u/MintyMods says "S&V - Taste a little medicinal, similar to pomegranate, would pair with fruits, absinthe, menthol, floral and obviously alcohol. Can't see it pairing with creams, bakery, nuts." /u/RinVapes is probably the most positive on the page with "authentic. can be used in place of maraschino cherry for some applications (drinks, candy, etc) Preferred single flavor mix: 0.5%" so maybe it's a concentration thing.

I don't know, people seem to dig this on ECX. 5 star average with 5 reviews.

/u/SecretVape asks for help on a recipe that tastes like burnt tires, culprit is the 9% Cap Grenadine. /u/BongleBear clarifies "I have had absolutely no luck at all with CAP Grenadine. I think it tastes terrible, even at very low percentages."

Grenadine. BEST reserved for actual drinking. I find FA pomegranate kinda gross @ 1.5% ... Need to test again at 1%

It's like adding an extra shot of diabetes to a cocktail. I still need to try TPA Pomegranate, but I didn't mind FA that bad. A bit too woody, but certainly better than whatever the fuck is going on here.

I have tpa, at 5% it's strange but kind of good and I liked it more than FA. Need to try it at 3%

FA's doesn't taste like pomegranates at all to me, all i get is some bitter wood notes and a strong taste that reminds me of that break in period of cheap japanese organic cotton

I tried a Shirley Temple flavor (TFA?) and it's just so mediocre. Too strong a flavor and the throat hit is horrendous.

I don't think we were meant to cape some beverage flavors.

Is it just me, or is that equal parts terrifying and beautiful?

I'm in love. I didn't even want to try to make sense of it. I just wanted to bask.

So it tastes even worse than it smells? Kinda glad you took one for the team on this one... At this point I'm just hoping it tastes fine in carbonated water so that I don't have to throw it away.

That burnt tires thread is interesting. I first mixed FM Amaretto (which would have similar components to this CAP Grenadine) at 8% and that is exactly what it tasted like. Like, I've never had a burnt tire before but I instantly imagined that's what it would taste like. Seems like too much cherry/almond volatiles = burnt tires.

Just threw it in with lemon-lime soda water and it tastes like amaretto and bubblegum. Still pretty bitter. It may be a lost cause entirely.

RF SC pomegranate might be good for grenadine.

Are you absolutely positivs it was supposed to taste like cherry? Because grenadine is traditionally pomegranate, not cherry

Yeah, I go over that a bit in the review.

Oh wow, my bad. Missed it among all of the references to cherry!

Thank you for this I thought it was just me....I get a strong "camphor" off it that is offputting. Perhaps at like .25% it could do something but I am inclined to try TPA's as I always look at that FA bottle and think I'm pouring delicious juicy pomegranate in my bottle and instead I get slapped back to reality. It ain't...it just ain't right and I'm an FA lover of many.
