Thanks all who contributed to the Bubblegum FOTW last week!
As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!
Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.
This week's flavor is: MELON.

I had a wrap with a side of cantaloupe and cottage cheese for lunch today. It was delicious.
This is my favorite cantaloupe mix, except I make some subs: Sub Cantaloupe (CAP) 4% for Cantaloupe (FA) 3%, Sub Lemon II (TFA) 0.5% for Lemon Sicily (FA) 0.35%, Sub Sweet Strawberry (CAP) for Strawberry (TFA) 1:1.
Anyone try Real Flavors' Melon Medley (SC)? I have a bottle of it I haven't opened yet. Been meaning too...
I think I might have a problem, the kind they create 12-step programs for. I've somehow managed to amass a dozen different melon flavors already, yet I just ordered four more last night (JF Honeydew, JF Watermelon, FE Migua/Honey Dew, and FE Melon). I'm hoping some fine folks here can point out some great uses for those and for my two newest melon additions that have already arrived but haven't even been opened yet - CAP Double Watermelon and CAP Honeydew Melon.
Meanwhile, AMA about TFA Watermelon, CAP Sweet Watermelon, FA Watermelon, LA Watermelon, FLV Watermelon, CAP Cantaloupe, FLV Cantaloupe, FLV Wild Melon, or INW Melon. Edit: or TFA Honeydew, let's not forget TFA Honeydew.
For that JF honeydew try my melon mix
-
0.5% INW cactus
-
2% CAP canteloupe
-
1% JF honeydew melon
-
1% FA watermelon
-
3% LA watermelon
Optional 0.5% erythritol
At 1% the honeydew is the star, delicious. I can't stand TFA honeydew and I had given up on honeydew until JF came around
I feel you on the TFA honeydew. I picked up JF honeydew just for my girlfriend and threw together a quick mix and fell in love with it and mixed a second bottle for myself. That and FLV wild Melon made me fall in love with melon mixes.
It's really a good flavor, took me by surprise. I need to get my hands on that FLV wild melon but I've been avoiding falling in love with more FLV flavors to try and save money lol .. their vanilla pudding is burning a hole in my pocket, need a 4oz 'scratches neck'
That looks tasty! I've had some recipes where TFA Honeydew was great to me, also had some that other people liked but I found to taste like Bath & Body Works honeydew-scented hand soap. /u/ediblemalfunction was praising JF Honeydew not long ago and sent me a recipe with it in there. It was delicious, but it also had a so many other things going on in it that it failed to demonstrate this JF Honeydew Melon supremacy he spoke of. Maybe if I'd tried it side by side with a version with TFA's at the same %, I would have seen it.
I'm actually SUPER new to this(Like I started a week ago) so be gentle, change the percentages as you see fit, but this recipe was one of my first and I adore it.
4% CAP Cucumber 3% TFA Honeydew 3% TFA Kiwi Double .5% Koolada (Easily optional)
Also try this by /u/trevorxgage
-
1% (FW)Blueberry
-
1.5% (JF) Honeydew Melon
-
0.25% (FA)Lime Tahity Cold Pressed
-
0.5% (FA)Meringue
-
0.5% (INW)Shisha Strawberry
-
1.5% (TPA)Vanilla Bean Ice Cream
-
1% (CAP)Vanilla Cupcake
I remixed it with a few subs but it's a great mix as is.
I just got Cap Honeydew Melon in the mail.
Melona/메로나 (posted my old recipe in the June recipes thread)
Revamped it last night.
10% CAP Honeydew Melon
3% LB VBIC
2% CAP VBIC
1% Vanillan 10%/PG
1% EM
.75% TFA Honeydew
10 drops TFA Koolada
Might check out TFA Vanilla Swirl but for now this tastes just like those Korean green melon bars or the green melon milk. Going to stay away from TFA Cantelope for this recipe. CAP HM seems to have the "juiciness" that it lacks.
If you wanted a strong honeydew flavor in a mix, would you try and layer two different vendors? Say CAP Honeydew Melon and TFA Honeydew? If so, what percentages do you recommend? ETA: I'm working on a Honeydew / Watermelon flavor.
I think if you want a strong honeydew flavor in mix, TFA Honeydew is all you need; start at 2% - that stuff is very strong. If you try TFA Honeydew by itself at 3% and find that you just plain don't like that flavor, try JF Honeydew. If you're going for a candy honeydew flavor, try CAP Honeydew Melon at around 5%; though I'm hearing that people aren't having much luck with mixing with it.
Thanks /u/ID10-T
Tried it out. 2% was a bit harsh, but 1% worked out great w/ TFA Watermelon at 5% and .75% of Erythritol.
I ordered JF Honeydew during the ECX sale, currently waiting for it to arrive (Hopefully I get it Monday as tracking has stalled since the 5th.) I have CAP Honeydew Melon too, so I will start testing that next.
You mentioned CAP has a candy flavor to it. Do you think it would go well with INW Melon? I've found that for melon candy 1.5% of INW Melon is perfect for a solo mix.
Melon? I love melon. This is grrrreat. Pulling a recipe from the wayback machine for this thread.
Rain Blossom
- INW Cactus 6% (not a typo)
- CAP Hibiscus 3%
- TFA Watermelon 2%
- TFA Honeydew 0.5%
The intent we were going for was a watermelon agua fresca for summer, infused with hibiscus. I know some of y'alls eyes are probably bugging at that percentage of Cactus, but...it works. It just does. It doesn't really get that aloe-y off flavor that high amounts can sometimes end up with.
I want to try this with FLV Watermelon since it's sitting on my shelf unused (along with like...all of my other FLV that isn't Vanilla Custard. Halp.). Not sure if I should 1:1 it or cut it down, though.
Also /u/ID10-T, Jack is here. He says hi. :)
You should 1:1 it. It'll be a little more watermelonlly, I think that might be a good thing here. Any thoughts on adding a coolant to that? For summer! ECX is sending me some WS-23 right now, and I already have FA Polar Blast, FLV Ice, and the og TFA Koolada.
Hi Jack! We miss you!
Also /u/Philosaphucker - check it out, 6% Cactus!
TFA watermelon seems to be most useful at 0.5% as a sweetener/melon accent. Candy watermelon if you go any higher.
CAP honeydew is really delicious at about 2%. I enjoy it with CAP cucumber at 5-6%(5-6% cucumber not Honeydew) or as an FA Kiwi sub in Coop's Kiwi Bourbon.
FLV cantaloupe is great solo at about 2-3% and great for melon mixes.
That's about the extent of my melon knowledge.
Edit: clarification and to say that I have FA Watermelon, but haven't single flavor tested it. Goes great in a strap-on.
Honeydew Bourbon! Holy shit, I have to try this. Are you using it as a straight 4% sub for the FA Kiwi or lower?
This is semi-off topic but I tried subbing FA Kiwi for TFA Juicy Peach at 4%. It's strangely tasty and has a sweet candy banana note.
I've tried that, too! It is indeed tasty yet weird, and does take on a banana type note.
I keep searching for something to do with that KB/TM combo that's as good as Coop's Kiwi Bourbon or your Bourbon Ice Cream, which has led me down quite a few paths like this Peach sub. I think the answer might lie in a tart, dark berry, but haven't found the right one yet.
Of the melons mentioned, I've only used TFA Honeydew. So, once again, I'll be posting ID10-T's amazing Honey Pearry clone, which has been an ADV for me since I started DIY.
https://alltheflavors.com/recipes/6666
Side note, I have noticed that the recipe description has been edited to include another recipe, which is supposedly superior, but i have yet to mix it up since one of the flavors is impossible for me to locate.
I'm so glad you enjoy it that much! I mixed up many versions of purported Honey Pearry clones back when that was a popular thing to try to clone. I can't comment on accuracy of any of them because I never tired the original, but many of the clones tasted promising but a little soapy to me. So I made that one, which I really like. I found it has as much TFA Honeydew as I could put in there without it getting soapy. I don't usually have an ADV or EDV but last summer I happily went through a big bottle of that without stopping.
The "Honey Sucker" by Fear recipe added to the description is just the same profile, but much tastier to me. It's so incredibly juicy!!! I don't quite understand what magic he used to make it even possible for me to vape that much TFA Honeydew and not just get a mouthful of soap. TBH, I was so scared of 4% TFA Honeydew that I only mixed it with 3.9%, like that 0.1% was going to make such a huge difference between juice I could vape and juice I would be tempted to pour out.
Which flavor is impossible for you to locate? I might try to work on a sub for it, or a recipe that's similar to Honey Pear but juicier like Honey Sucker.
The JF Sweet Strawberry. I should clarify, I did locate it, their sole vendor seems to be eCig Express, however, spending $9 on one 30 ml of flavoring (with the shipping cost) was too steep for me. I was going to add my usual flavors to the order last time, but they were significantly higher than my regular vendors.
Makes sense. Well, I wouldn't try increasing the Honeydew in my Honey Pear recipe without the JF Sweet Strawberry - I think that might be part of the magic - but a little Cactus (maybe 0.25%) and CAP Cantaloupe (2%?) could be beneficial.
Every1 needs flv wild melon and PUR Watermelon
I messed up my order - couldn't remember which PUR was getting rave reviews and now I have Condensed Milk instead of Watermelon headed my way. It was too late by the time I saw another mention of that melon and realized my mistake, hopefully I'll remember next time.
Have you done anything exciting with it yet or just enjoyed it by itself?
condensed milk melons are my absolute favourite
Its def candy...its perfect for a bubble gum...better then the og LA
PUR Melon Patch is really good as well. I've only just started messing with it, but I love it. I'll do a review when I have time (probably this weekend.) It's good stand alone, and I'm doing a mix of it with pur watermelon, fa pear, and fw vbic that's turning out really good.
So I have tried a few melons and they're not my favorite flavor. That being said, flv wild melon is a very good, natural melon. It is very fleshy at about 2% and tastes sorta like honeydew with the flesh of watermelon. Texture is definitely watermelon flesh.
Inawera melon is sorta the same idea, but to me it tastes a lot more artificial. It reminds me of green trident gum. It's a little sharp for me.
There aren't really any other melons I've single flavor tested, but I have used fa melon cantaloupe, and it's good, but I used it in a mix with inawera melon and tfa papaya, and the tfa papaya was awful.
Also, Imo the flv wild melon is probably not best in a melon mix. I only say this because it is in my opinion too soft and will be overpowered easily by something like inw melon. I could see flv wild melon being good with yogurt and something grainy to emulate fruit salad with granola and yogurt, or maybe with creams, but the texture of flv wild melon is to me what makes it so unique, and that seems to be drowned out when it's in a mix.
FLV Wild Melon tasted delicious didn't get overpowered by the other ingredients in this Wild Strap On by /u/reldof but I haven't gotten around to SFT'ing it yet. Now I'm really looking forward to that.
Ok, it must have been the inw melon overpowered it or maybe I'm just misremembering it. It's been almost a year since I've mixed it.
I've been working on the recipe below for a while now. I think this revision is pretty solid, but I am very open to criticism and advice. If you mix it, I hope you enjoy it!
Honeydew and milk (ID:4 REV:F)
TFA Honeydew @2%
TFA Honeydew II @4%
FA Melon/Cantaloupe @1%
FA Fresh Cream @1%
FA Vienna Cream @.5%
FA Marshmallow @.5%
TFA Vanilla Swirl @1%
FLV Milk @.5%
FA Coco @.5%
Sucralose @ .25%<x>.75%
Steep for at least 48 hours.
Notes: TFA Honeydew 1 is very fragrant, while H. dew 2 is very musky. FA Melon/Cantaloupe is also pretty fragrant, but it has a nice juicy mouthfeel. I like this combination and ratio. I've tried decreasing the concentrations, but the melon can slip under the milk base pretty quickly.
FA Coco plays nice with marshmallow, serving as a unique bridge between the melon and cream.
The improvement I'd most like to make to this recipe: finding a substitute for sucralose.
So I'm relatively new but I've really been liking this one so far. Nice and refreshing (eucalyptus is my jam) with some melony sweetness floating around. Suggestions are definitely welcome. You guys really know your stuff.
INW Cactus @.25%
INW Melon @.5%
FLV Wild Melon @1.5%
INW Eucalyptus and mint @.8%
Oh my god, I keep thinking I will want to take a week off from this thread. My first 3-4 months of mixing were spent in melon land but admittedly I didn't have some of the heavy hitters in my arsenal. Melons are so delicious but in my limited experience can be very floral and fuel-like. I feel like additives are critical to get the most out of a lot of the melons. Dragon fruit, cactus and cucumber all play nice with melons. They get along pretty well with stone fruits and berries as well. Citrus too....pretty dang versatile really. A really fun niche to play in really.
Some of my favorites flavorings are: TPA Watermelon, LA Watermelon and FLV Wild Melon. I will admit I haven't tried the hyped up Purilum but I am starting to believe it...hahahha...
A simple balanced melon medley I like is something like:
TPA Watermelon 4%
FLV Wild Melon 2%
INW Cactus .5%
TPA Dragon Fruit 1%
FA Cucumber 1%
This is what I would consider a pretty typical melon mix based on where I am at right now in my mixing. Looking forward to seeing some more recipes and flavor notes.
Cucumber Melon:
6% CAP cucumber
2% CAP honeydew melon
3% CAP cantaloupe
Shake and vape
Great refreshing summer recipe. Sweet melons with crisp cucumber.
I really don't like Melon flavors. Artificial tasting honeydew juices from vape shops has given me a permanent fear of them. This thread has been a good read, though. I really love cantaloupe IRL and I would love to have juice that actually tastes like it-- I think. Gonna hit up some of these suggestions. I already have:
FLV Wild Melon, LA Watermelon, FW Watermelon, and LA Melon. I haven't tried the last one yet at all but I'll do that tonight.
Edit- forgot I also have FA Red Summer which is pretty nice for a Melon flavor.
Here are my limited and basic notes of the melons that I've tried.
TFA – WATERMELON @ 5% Dry like TFA Bubble-gum, but not as dry. I’m getting the white part of the watermelon, between the pink part and the skin. I’m getting a little bit of the pink part. I get a slightly bitter note on the inhale, & sweetness on the exhale. Not a stand-alone flavour. I know it goes well with strawberry and kiwi, which are both pretty sweet. I think it would pair well with any sweet fruit. I’m thinking apple, pear, cactus, or dragon fruit. I know it also works with bubble gum, and I can see why now. It’s almost a weaker version of bubble gum to my palette.
TFA - WATERMELON CANDY @5% Plenty of vapour from this, not a lot of flavour. Similar to TFA Watermelon, with no harsh notes. No bitter notes, no green part, no white part, just a hint of the pink part of a watermelon. Underwhelming.
FA RED SUMMER (WATERMELON) @5% This is much a more authentic watermelon than TFA’s version. It is also much smother. It is a fairly weak flavour @5%, but the flavour I’m getting is a just overripe watermelon, that bit right in the middle of a watermelon that is a darker pink than the rest. No white part, no rindy bitterness. Decent vapour, no throat hit.
CAP – CANTELOUPE @ 5% I found this a little weak and light. Sweet flavour, not very authentic, and whatever aroma is in TFA peach that I don’t like is also in this flavour. Not too bad, probs ok blended with other fruits.
hope this helps someone out there.
Looking forward to the Melon edition of NOTED. Great show.

That looks excellent Chris
