DTL vs MTL for flavor
submitted over 8 years ago by stayinwonderland

This is a question I've thought about for a while now. Posting it in the DIY sub because it's a flavor-focused group.

When I MTL I do a few primer puffs, cycle the vapor through my nose, get the flavor there and then inhale from mouth to lung where I get the flavor going all the way down and a little on the exhale.

Whenever I've tried doing DTL I get almost nothing on the inhale, as it's bypassing my palette and nose, and a little on the exhale. So I'm wondering why anyone interested in flavor would DTL?

Thoughts?

I've been thinking about this lately too, but more in a context of, how should I tune mixes to work in my mtl setup. Hasn't managed to articulate a question out of it yet.

I've tried dtl with a troll rda, but don't get the flavor I'm looking for vs my standard cartomizer.

This is a good question for all 9 of us who mtl, so I'm looking forward to what comments you get.

Idk, MTL is just not my style of vape. I get plenty of flavor in my RTAs.

I tried fucking with a kayfun for a while and it just wasn't fun for me. I don't like the tighter draw of an MTL device.

Also since we develop recipes that are not just meant to be enjoyed by us, we tend to tweak the percentages toward the modern day DTL atties.

Most people who diy are using drippers and/or rebuildable tanks, and the majority of those devices on the market are for higher wattage set ups (+40 watts).

I know it isn't just me but I get a ton of flavor out of devices like the Troll RTA, Serpent mini 25 and Gemini Mega tank. I cannot complain about the flavor I get, and you still taste all the nuances.

Also, clouds bro.

Flavor for days on the Serpent. When the wicking is right, it's like you are drinking the flavor in.

Yep. The og mini or the 25, both are awesome. I actually just bought another one lol

I'm rocking the OG. It's my go to travel tank

Amen brother. And same here. I bought the wife a Kayfun 5 and loaned her the OG mini. She's refused to return it, so ordered the new SMM. Great RTAs

I've been using a Griffin for 6 months and was surprised how much I like it. I'd like to try another RTA now and have been looking at both the Troll RTA and the Serpent mini, which do you like best ?

Troll holds more juice. If you can get a serpent mini 25 I'd go with that though. Troll is gonna be easier to wick at first but the serpent is awesome and convenient especially when using the single coil deck, flavor is pretty similar for both imo. The original serpent mini is also awesome but only holds about 2ml of juice while the 25mm one holds 4mls or so. You really can't go wrong and I don't think there is a best, just what you prefer

Why not both? I MTL all my tobaccos and DTL everything else.

TBH tho I don't get as much enjoyment DTL with thin fruity vapes. Thick fluffy clouds from custards and creams are my jam right now.

Ok my comment will sit here. I do both too. MTL tobacco, DTL everything else.

As far as flavor, Both produce great flavor with proper build. With DTL, I exhale thru mouth and nose same time and get a huge flavor kick on the way out. Not much on the way in but to be fair I don't get much flavor on the way in with MTL either.

MTL I exhale primarily through my nose and a bit thru my mouth at the end of the exhale. I have to tease out the flavor more with I MTL. <Not sure how to quantify that statement but MTL for me is less in your face flavor right off the bat but perhaps I notice more subtleties in the flavor stage overall.

hmm, I just tried a few things and DTL is just weird for me. On the exhale, for any flavor it seems, I get a peppery unpleasant thing going on. But I'm pretty odd and unconventional when it comes to vaping.

What's your build and what tank/RDA are you dtling on? Ultimately, it doesn't matter if you dtl OT mtl, which ever works best for you. But if you're trying to enjoy dtl then build and wattage will make all the difference.

Same/same. MTL on a Kayfun with tobaccos, Avocado or Magma for custards and bakeries.

Wow, a Magma shout-out. Like seeing a unicorn in the wild.

Also, are you me? I hope not, you got some shit to do today if you're me.

Oh, this thread is three days old. Ahh.

I like this answer.

99% of my vaping time is MTL with my tobacco blends. My all-day cigarette replacement, just way tastier. But at the end of the day, there's plenty of good-tasting VG-heavy juice sitting around, and plenty of drippers and whatnot. It's just a different style, for a different mood.

I must be the oddball here then as I find the flavour from DTL to be much better than MTL

by clfitzover 8 years ago

You're not the oddball. I have the same experience.

Not only better, but more consistent.

Same here. MTL just doesn't do anything for me.

Some people spell "flavo(u)r" "DEMKLOWDZBRAH".

I'm probably gonna sound like a jackass, but I get really good flavor with the baby beast RBA. I'm running dual alien coils at .2 ohms and 50 watts. You can get flavor in a dtl setup, just depends on the build.

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 8 years agoThat Sugar Cookie Guy

Agreed. I run around .3 ohms and regardless of what you hear on ECR (which to be fair, SMOK does have serious QC issues), it's one of my favorite tanks next to the Serpent Mini.

by Cocky1976over 8 years ago

Oops, should have said big baby lol. That build would get pretty warm in the standard baby. I use that as well, just smaller Clapton coils. Their not bad tanks other than the shit factory coils.

1 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 8 years agoThat Sugar Cookie Guy

Yep. I never bought more pre-builts after I used the two that came with it. Ordered the RBA deck as soon as it was released

i mtl and dtl, i also do the occasional mesh build. i tend to mtl tobaccos and heavy desserts, dtl everything but tobacco, and only use tobacco in the mesh. also there are plenty of rdas that are dtl and get great flavor.

Which mesh tanks/drippers you use? I have in my hand SS 316L 400 mesh and a clone Magister and Zephyr at my fingertips. Haven't used it yet, owned for months.

1 points

by froorfover 8 years ago

I'm using a clone zephyr with a peek reducer on the wick hole. Also use an authentic Origen v2 mkii.

Nice, gotta get mine up n running. The Zephyr is so classy :)

Are you sure? I do own the best MTL devices (for flavor) that are available. The Kayfun 5 and the V3 mini. But I get at least the same flavor, if not more in my RDAs. The difference is the DL devices produce much warmer vapor and much more of it.

Restrictive dtl atty's are best for flavor in my opinion. Atty's like Hadaly, odis, wasp nano, soul s, serpent mini etc the chamber size is reduced so they provide more saturated vape which is full of flavor and of course side airflow does wonders too

1 points

by Just-Elianover 8 years ago

Mtl usually would have a smaller amount of airflow. Dtl is more airflow which would create more but less dense vapor. Bypassing the mouth is how you make monster clouds. However, some people prefer the draw of more airflow. In order to get your flavor while DTLing, i recommend a clapton or other flavor coil.

There's Definitly a difference with some flavours. I'm more of a mtl guy, and my adv currently uses TPA Energy drink. Direct lung it taste somewhat like an energy drink, but in MTL it's an accurate rocket/fun dip/pixie sticks)

To me MtL gives more intense flavour but not across the entire 'spectrum', usually accentuating the middle-high and high notes. DtL gives less intense flavour but it's more even across the low, middle and high notes.

Shitty photoshop graph to help explain.

Those red and blue lines will change shape and move depending on the atty and juice, but that's the general idea of how I see it.

What really made this stand out to me was Nana Cream. In a Kayfun I found it really punchy in the strawberry, with the banana and cream almost non existent. In a DtL RDA the strawberry is a bit duller, and I get more of the banana and a hint of the cream coming through.

that's an interesting way to look at it. Never thought of that. But where is the flavor hitting you, is it on the exhale? through the nose? or on the inhale? I'm just confused as to how the lungs can taste it when the vapor goes straight into 'em.

1 points

by BuryMeInSmokeover 8 years ago

The inhale on MtL is a bit stronger although I really I don't get a whole lot of flavour on the inhale in any device. Maybe I just don't pick up flavours well on the inhale, maybe some people talk up the inhale a bit more than what actually exists. I dunno.

I think it's a bit more complex than vapour directly running over receptors. Maybe some of the more volatile compounds manage to 'escape' on the inhale and end up in your nasal cavity which gives the inhale flavour. If you're vaping inside, especially in a smaller room, possibly you're smelling some of the residual vapour/aroma that's lingering in the air. There's probably a bunch of stuff that comes into play.

On my way out so don't have time to read it fully at the moment, and it deals with eating not vaping, but this Wikipedia page my be a good starting point for further reading on the topic.

Retronasal smell

Retronasal smell, retronasal olfaction, or mouth smell, is the ability to perceive flavor dimensions of foods and drinks. Retronasal smell is a sensory modality that produces flavor. It is best described as a combination of traditional smell (orthonasal smell) and taste modalities. Retronasal smell creates flavor from smell molecules in foods or drinks shunting up through the nasal passages as one is chewing.
