Been on ecigs now for around 12 month and have had no issues with store bought premium flavours, mainly USA made as they seem to have superior flavour (am UK btw.)
Now, it could be the nic needs to steep for a while so it isnt so offensive when vaping which would explain why premium flavours (e.g Elements is a favourite) dont have this effect.
I've been attempting to make my own juice but finding even with a max VG recipe, every hit is really harsh and sets off my lungs/throat and causes wheezing.
Britain now has a lovely piece of legislation called the TPD, so oil now comes in 10ml bottles or 60ml with no nic.
Bought a store 60ml high vg, (70/30) tried the flavour as it was new and was fine, no issues, added my own base PG nic (48mg/ml) of around 7.5ml to aim for 6mg of nic (may have missed this but not by much?)
Left overnight, tried in the morning - awful wheeze after the first pull, have to use inhaler - back to store bought for the meantime.
The funny thing is that store bought juice is fine i have no issues with, my questions are, is this a thing? are some DIY nicotine concentrates ideal to stay away from? and are some smoother than others? has anybody with Asthma also encountered this?
Google is useless as all it does is bring the 5000 results of 'Asthma not affected by vapour' etc, and other DIY posts about making your own, i seem to be the only unlucky one that this affects?
It sounds like the nicotine might be low quality or oxidized.
Troubleshooting
Where did it come from?
How long did it take to ship to your house and in what conditions (hot/cold climate)?
How do you store the nicotine? Location, temperature. Sealed?
Do you shake the nicotine very well before putting it into your mixes?
Does the nicotine have a certain look or smell to it?
Where did it come from? http://vapable.com/ How long did it take to ship to your house and in what conditions (hot/cold climate)? cold as this was in November... IIRC How do you store the nicotine? Location, temperature. Sealed? Sealed under my bed in the Dark Do you shake the nicotine very well before putting it into your mixes? Until my dominant arm goes dead - and then some. Does the nicotine have a certain look or smell to it? a very faint shade of brown/ almost orange
7 months of generally okay quality nicotine seems to be pushing it.
"Until my dominant arm goes dead" I'm wondering if you're shaking it to the point where it gets bubbly and oxygen gets in the mix.....
Bubbley mixes definitely are harsher right off the bat. I'm not sure after a steep though.
My Nicotine River 100mg nicotine tends to start getting harsh after 2 or 3 months. That's in the freezer broken out into black glass 30ml bottles. It starts getting cummy after 2 months, then harsh on the 3rd month.
I'm hoping CXT works out better.
I keep my CXT in the freezer. Even after a year, my last liter (100mg/mL in PG) was still fresh and clear as ever. My current one is close to 6 months in, and showing no signs of oxidizing. I spray a few shots of this in it after re-filling my working bottle. Not sure if it's helping for certain, but I've had ZERO issues with oxidation when using it. I used to have a 120 mL working bottle which started showing some pinkness after a couple months, but I wasn't using the preservative in between mix sessions. Now I use a 30mL nice bottle for mixing, I don't preserve it, nor do I have problems since it gets freshened up once a month.
I know I say it on this sub all the time, but I can't see there being a better nicotine than what you get from Carolina Extracts. I've read countless horror stories about people getting dicked around by Nude Nicotine. (shipping times, incorrect base or strength, leaky bottles, shitty/no customer service, etc) I've also read plenty of other testimonials about people getting nicotine that is brown and harsh from numerous other vendors.
I have no affiliation with CXT, but I feel like if everyone here got their nicotine from them and stored it properly, we wouldn't be having a nicotine discussion every single day. Just my 2 cents.
EDIT: nothing against you or OP, I just went on a little tangent, and also realized OP in the UK so I don't know if he can even get CXT. I would have to imagine there has to be a similar company over there than cold presses their nic.
My asthma is mildly triggered by oxidised nic and a few heavy flavors. It's tough to pin down an issue based on the anecdotes of others, however, since triggers are varied from person to person and may also be a combination of factors like environment and even little things like the time of day (my symptoms appear mainly at night, and this is fairly common.) Still, I'd check the quality on your nic and if it's an option, try a different supplier.
This is interesting to me as a chronic asthmatic myself. The only thing I've found that has triggered my asthma since vaping has been anything with vanilla bean ice cream flavouring in it. I'm fine with anything else
any possibility there could be a massive difference in nic PG bse or nic VG base?
Thinking am going to get some more nic i might aswell try it in VG base?
My cousin is working on ecig research in Australia. Her last update was that PG seems to affect the cilia in your lungs, which could be the problem. It doesn't seem to do anything to second hand vapers (no ecig vapour does), but for the vaper themselves, it may do.
Anecdotal, but high PG liquids set off my chest badly too. I don't have asthma but if I chain vape PG heavy liquid I will have a coughing fit, but VG heavy liquids don't do the same, even with chain vaping.
There are definitely variations in nicotine bases, particularly thier quality. Usually when it starts tasting peppery it's degrading but not always, some brands are indeed simply smoother than others. If it's this harsh now I doubt it's going to subside to a level you can vape it. If funds allow I would recommend ordering from Hiliq, their nicotine base is quite smooth, worth trying. If you want my honest opinion it's the nicotine you're using (it shouldn't be that harsh). I've been mixing myself and understand the headaches a poor base can cause the testing, troubleshooting etc. Unless someone else has a suggestion I'd jump onto Hiliq and count your losses , like you said, the premade juices you buy aren't doing it.
Can you tell us where you got your nicotine from? I just got 100ml from nicotineUK (first order with them) and it seems fine (@ 72mg/ml).
Omg you were just ripped off and lol at the price for a litre! :O
thanks for the replies guys, i had bought the PG nic a while ago and had the same effect brand new so no oxidising yet - i think the best theory is the brands that can differ.
My biggest problem is that i cannot import any nicotine into the UK anymore since the TPD bollocks thats come in.
So am stuck buying 20mg/ml in 10ml bottles for £5 (bout $6 usd) so for 60ml of juice to be 6mg it needs around 18ml which nearly £10 just for nicotine! looks like store bought it the best way to go
I had the same issue with some of my DIY (both flavor and nic) and find it's really hard for me to track down which ingredients set me off. I've kind of moved back towards some of my tried and true premiums that irritate me less...but in general vaping really hammers my lungs compared to analogs and I've tried every combination of everything DIY and different vendors, pg/vg, and flavors. It's always a crapshoot when I mix something with a new nic source or flavor I haven't used.
I recently picked up one of those Cync cigalikes. Not sure if you can get them there, but I've been using it almost exclusively the past few weeks and BOY my lungs are SOOOO much happier. I've actually developed a huge liking for it (went back to my crown 3 to vape my favorite flavor and found myself craving the cigalike). My sinuses have been better with the cigalike as well. I think a lot of it for me is just the density of the vapor that's irritating my lungs and I think some of it gets into my ears and gives me tinnitus and ear pressure as well. Even when I run my big rigs with the coils cooler than the recommended wattage still just seems to cause me a lot more irritation.
Just wanted to say that cigalikes seem to have improved a lot as of late, and maybe give one a try if you haven't in a while. For the cync my favorite flavors they offer so far is the tobacco, nut, coffee one, the neon sherbet, and the strawberry rhubarb (in case you check it out and can get them there). I tried a dozen other flavors and didn't like any of the others so far.
Look into purchasing nicotine salts. They are much less harsh then nicotine extract that is traditionally used. That is what they use in the JUUL, that is 50mg/ml.
Also, there has to be an easier way to buy unflavored, 99.97% vg. It has a lot of other uses besides vaping.
Somebody with first had experience with this. Please give this a shot before you quit DIY.
-
Use only 100mg/nic so you can use less of it to achieve the same strength.
-
Let juice immediately sit in hottest possible tap water for 3 minutes, shake well about halfway through the 3 minutes.
-
Let sit with the lid off for MIN 8 hours.
My asthma will always trigger if I attempt to made a "fresh" made bottle, It seems to have something to do with the "fumes" almost alcoholically smell you get from "fresh" flavours. Even just smelling the juice feels like its plugging me up. After 8-10 hours with the cap off this really seems to go away.
Let me know if it helps
