I recently tried nonna's cake and thought it would make a great orange roll. My initial attempt was

The weirdness of the nonnas seems to go perfectly with the Orange cream. This by itself was damn close for me, but I wanted more body. I needed some diketone-like thickness, but didn't want too much flavor. I tried adding a little biscuit, but that changed the flavor a little too much.
A few attempts later led me to adding some vanillas. After some trial and error, I ended up with my most recent iteration:
- nonnas - 3
- orange cream - 4
- INW lemon cake - .5
- holy vanilla - 1
- cap van cust -1
- flv van cust - 1
This one is delicious, but lost some of the orange bite. The lemon cake really seems to help, and the custard definitely gets the mouthfeel I'm going for. I can prob drop the flv custard (or the other one) and only use 1.
In my opinion the icing flavor is taken care of by the nonna, so I'm not adding anything like LA CCI.
Again, this is amazingly tasty where it's at, but I feel it could be closer to an orange roll. Next up I may drop one or both custards to see if the nonna and orange come out more, and keep the holy vanilla. You guys have any ideas that I didn't think of?
The first thing I'd do is try it without the FLV Vanilla Custard, which is probably doing much less work in the mouthfeel department than Capella's. Just removing that might be enough to give it back some orange bite. If it isn't, you might try adding a small amount of another orange.
I'd agree on the flv. I wonder if there is anyway to get some thickness without any flavor... Remember when abdada was messing with the diketone molecules...ha!
Marshmallow is an option, but I feel like most of that comes from vanillin and I'm not sure it'd get me where I want to be.
Another orange might help as long as it doesn't change the flavor too much. The orange cream flavor is perfect for what I'm after. I've thought about increasing it or adding a little bergamot for that weird bite, but it's been so long since I've messed with bergamot that I don't know if it would help or make it worse. I guess it's worth a shot.
I wouldn't put Marshmallow in here unless the orange bit too hard and I wanted to file it down a bit, which sounds like the opposite of what you want. Maybe one of the butter flavors, or one of the HS creams, or INW Custard.
I think you might have a good excuse to order the new FA Royal Orange here.
A butter sounds like it might work. I've never messed with any, but I've got amoretti vanilla butter laying around. If that doesn't work I may order cap golden butter like /u/hokuskrokus suggested.
This HS creams might be a little too cheese-like, but I'll give them a shot as I've got a few.
Haven't read up on the new orange but I'll check it out for sure.
