Group Buy: GCMS Analysis of AVE Boba's Bounty
submitted over 8 years ago by bobbysavageResident Tobacco Specialist

Hello /r/DIY_ejuice,

I was wondering if anyone would like to pitch in for a GCMS analysis of AVE's Boba's Bounty. This recipe was cancelled around the same time as the Suicide Bunny/diketones fiasco, and was my ADV for years.

I just got home after 3 weeks of vacation and found a bottle that a redditor had mailed to me free of charge, in the name of science.

  • The cost of the GCMS analysis is 100$ ~~500$ not sure anymore ive been directed elsewhere.~~

  • will update when possible

  • Update found this https://shop.perfumersapprentice.com/p-7358-fragrance-analysis-by-gcms.aspx looks like I'll be funding this one solo as 50-60$ isn't worth my time to try and organize a group buy. Still going open source with this.

  • I'm willing to put up ~~25-~~100% of the cost.

  • ~~More contributors = faster results~~ This is on the back burner for now but still a priority in the near future.

  • I intend to release the results so that others can make better clones.

If anyone is interested feel free to DM me or comment here. I am going to eat and shower.

heres a way more detailed explanation than i could give on what GC/MS is.

I wish I had tried it when it was around. I've read just about every clone thread I could find on it, but I still don't really have any idea what it actually tastes like. This sounds interesting, but I'm afraid I don't have enough stock in the clone search to help. Are there any juices that are available that come anywhere close?

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

The recipe is pretty old at this point... but the closest thing I can relate is that it smells like graham crackers and prune or raisins/raisin bran - Tobacco and ash.

My description isn't doing it justice. As far as relatable recipes... Jango (cancelled roughly same time) by Seduce Juice was close. They also haven't dropped any hints on that recipe and aren't going to I don't think at this point

I placed an order with indigo that I could not produce an ID scan for at the time. They also have a graham tobacco affair, but I have not tried it. I believe that liquid is called "OORAH"by Indigo (again). It's on the list though.

I may have to absorb the costs on this one and that's fine.

I wonder if they were using TFA Graham Cracker Clear. That would explain the D/A/AP failure. It's been the only Graham Cracker flavor I've used. Maybe switching to DX Graham or some other brand is what messed them all up. Interesting theory.

Oohrah I'm about 80% sure uses ECX Black Mile Plus for the base. As soon as I tried that one I thought it tasted exactly like it. I've got a clone I'm working on for the Duke, and it uses ECX Hongtashan for the base, and I'm thinking Kick Back uses ECX Captain. So I'm thinking most of their stuff will probably have ECX tobaccos for the base. None of this really helps with the Boba's stuff, but I figured I'd share.

But that description was about what I gathered from all the clone threads I've read, so that's the direction I went when I made a tribute to it. Couldn't really even call it a clone attempt since I've never had it. It ended up with way more flavors in there than I wanted to use, so I don't really make it anymore. I have been meaning to simplify it a bit, but that profile hasn't really tickled my man sized fancy lately.

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

Hmm ima have to try ECX tobaccos they seem prevalent in all the clone threads. There was also hint of coconut at the end of so ima have to prolly swoop up TFA's coconuts.

I think I have most of the graham cracker flavors but still need FW and possibly some older, more obscure vendors. It could be another grainy type flavor.

At this point I think the tobacco is irrelevant I have INW DBN but need to play with it more that combined with an NET could be good enough. Perhaps it was just that or a TFA tobacco that was cancelled. That'd be the more bland explanation but combined with D/A/AP scare a good reason to err on the side of caution to cancel a juice.

TFA did cancel a bunch of tobac. flavors I think the accouterments are what made the recipe what it was more so than the tobacco. The creator wont release the recipe :[ the funny thing is I would buy more of their other liquids if they did.

This sample smells exactly what how I remember its about 100mL in their green PET bottles... The color is still good.

sorry for the wall of text im in need of sleep. interesting theories on the indigo recipes ive seen your reviews stating that about ECX Hongtashan before.

Does a Raisin Bran flavor exist? anyone? specifically from older flavor manufacturers.

How has ECX's site security been in your experience?

I vaped a lot of Boba's back in the day. The taste as I remember was raisin/graham cracker backed by vanilla, then tobacco somewhere in the background. No ash. Also, it was VG-based and fairly sweet.

I finally burned out on BB. The taste began to make me think of "raisin wine" so I gave what I had left to a friend at work.

Creating a Boba's clone was a white whale for a lot of its fans, including Kinnikinnick at ELR. Not sure if anyone ever got close.

Kinnikinnick said he got close, he's a good guy though. NET is a fickle thing

As far as OORAH goes, I've tried it and it seems quite heavy on the Tobacco flavor compared to Jango - at the least. I dont recall trying Bobas Bounty, however.

I'm going to have to try this flavor thanks for the notes.

2 points

by slumberlandover 8 years ago

eh. If i recall correctly it was flavoring discontinuation.

I never really cared for Boba's. I am now considering ordering a big bottle of Hype or Bees Knees now, though.

edit: my assumptions from the current website and what i know and have heard - flavor 39 is their reblend without the missing core ingredient(s), and simian slam is gorilla juice to flavor 39's boba.

1 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

Yea i was grasping at straws there towards the end. I can totally accept a flavoring discontinuation.

Ima crash out and get back at y'all tomorrow. Goodnight

wow your username is oddly fitting.

If it helps any, that same buttery graham note was in 5 Pawns Symmetry Six. I've some info on that, although it'd be better discussed in a private setting.

As far as the GCMS, where are you having it performed? I only ask because I use a lab to test all my race fuels and associated "tire enhancers", and I have a pretty good relationship/frequent flyer deal with them. My GCMS cost is usually <$120 as long as we don't need to determine sulphers or metallics, which I'd guess is irrelevant here.

I'll get ahead of the ball and see if they'd be willing to/and or capable of testing this juice. Recently, I had another company run an assay on Symmetry Six for me, but although affordable, the process was a little too hostile to consider them again. I'll consider contributing funds, as well.

Oh, and find that cannibal fella who went nuts cloning Shrub, I see him in the research chem subs from time to time. He's got the smarts and dedication to be an asset, I'd imagine.

Hmmm after I moved on from clearos to mechs I forgot about five pawns.

Im thinking NN at least to start with. Haven't looked around much, I gotta finish up some stuff and we can chat later. Thanks for letting me know this sounds potentially very promising.

What do you race?

I originally thought it was /u/captaincannibal that bought the GCMS of Shurb. I remember all the clones and writeups. That was legendary.

>@ /u/captaincannibal: Did you have your own GCMS analyisis of shurb or were you working off of /u/vaperous's? Either way you are a DIY God.

Looking back though I think it was /u/vaperous in this post

>@ /u/vaperous: Who did you go through for the analysis? Anything you would change if you could go back in time? Either way you are a DIY God at this point as well.

Bigger picture: The most important detail is someone was awesome enough to release their results open source. Because of that other people can refine their clones in attempt to reach a common goal... beautiful.

I think the lightning cannon by eternity on ELR tastes decent. I ha e 100ml of it left and it's a very earthy taste.

That recipe looks pretty good for a dessert style. I really liked the taste of Black Mile Plus, but didn't use it much because it made everything black real quick.

Can you explain what GCMS will give and then how you'd use that to help clone the original juice?

3 points

by Drakatover 8 years ago

Not OP but GC/MS stands for gas chromatography mass spectrometry. Basically it can fully analyze something to the bare chemicals, and somebody skilled can read that to determine individual flavor notes that are untasted, etc etc. Its just expensive to get done.

1 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

Hey sorry I didn't explain that last night /u/Drakat was correct to my understanding. We can have a sample of eliquid analyzed and have it compared to a database of known chemicals.

We then get a report that looks like this http://imgur.com/a/MtIWS and can compare CAS#'s to a database for flavors such as TFA's in order to replicate a recipe

This video explains it better than I can and is safe for work

Have any friends taking science/biology/etc. classes in college? State schools would probably be the best bet, but you might be able to get someone there to do it. I asked someone about it once and got the contact for the guy in the department but never followed up. (edit: I don't mean it'd necessarily be free, but probably cheaper if you can find a willing place. Though I guess school is out for right now)

I googled AVE Boba's Bounty and it got me here: http://www.alienvapor.com/bobas-bounty/ It looks like I can just go and order it... or is this something different under the same name?

by Muchafraidover 8 years ago

If I remember correctly, this is a guy who basically made a shitty clone of the juice, "trademarked" it, and named his company in a confusingly similar fashion. I think the correct URL for the maker is here Alien Visions Eliquid

That is the correct url. I did not know all of that first part haha shady tactics.

So can this flavor not be bought anywhere because it was discontinued? I've heared the name tossed around a lot here on reddit and think I remember Pbusardo mentioning it also, plus it has a really cool name from Star Wars. I love a good nice MTL tobacco like FA Soho so if I could buy a bottle somewhere I'd love to. Any ideas? Or am I too late?

Alien Vapor is an impostor company of Alien Visions Ejuice http://avejuice.com/ .

They have been around for years but are not the creator of the original. Their practices seemed so misleading that I never tried to order from them. The tasting notes weren't doing them much justice either.

https://www.e-cigarette-forum.com/forum/threads/alien-vapor-bobas-bounty.439090/

edit: I can get a pic of the label/bottle up later.

Oh man, I had forgotten about Boba's Bounty! They had another flavor that I liked a lot called Wookie Cookie, which was basically the same flavor without the tobacco notes. It was like the graham cracker crust at the edge of a cream pie, so tasty... and buttery. I haven't peeked into this sub in a while, what's the consensus on diketones and ap now? I know they aren't great for you, but the amounts we use them in for e-juice seems insignificant.

3 points

haha "wookie cookie."

i think the consensus on diketones is that they are delicious.

Are these GCMS Analysis available for concentrates.

And if so, is it cheaper to get multiple checked at the same time?

1 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

I believe they are available for concentrates, as for as a disco. I am not sure. I can poke around NN's website

1 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

There seem to be cheaper options available as well so I will explore them and see what the deal is, and post back.

2 points

by Tiptup300over 8 years ago

This would definitely have to be a ways down the road, but I would be down to put together a community project to raise money to get the most popular Concentrates broken down.

Would need to make sure it was worth while though, are their any other examples of this being done on a concentrate already?

Only this, but I don't know if it's done by GCMS.

I dont want to guess.

I am interested in helping to crowd fund this, but there'd need to be a few other guys going in as well. I am also not sure what I would do with the results, so I would basically just be contributing with the hope that someone else can replicate the recipe. FWIW, u/bobbysavage, you said you don't have FW Graham Cracker, and I think you should get some. It is a very buttery graham flavor, and I use it along with some RY4 mixes. It could be a major help in your mission, don't overlook it =)

2 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

I'm definitely going to check out the remaining graham cracker flavors that were available and am going to start looking at oatmeal and raisin concentrates as well. The original seems loaded with some type of sweetener but, we will see (im going to laugh if it turns out to be ry4 double and oatmeal + raisin).

If we were able to look at the results, and compare them to the concentrate's constituents we could go through manufacturer's msds sheets/goodscents or and possibly having a better chance at trial and error.

There seems to be some interest through DMs and comments. If I can find cheap/legit enough options i may be able to just fund one myself, and release the results, then perform or crowdfund others in the future if needed.

I guess im going to buy more flavors from wizard labs and contact TPA.

2 points

by loIwtfover 8 years agoYellow Cake Apologist

Do you prefer Wizard Labs based on past experience or something? Far be it from me to change that, but if you don't already know, they use tiny glass vials and I absolutely hate that. Plus BCF makes all other companies' shipping times look super slow. ymmv, though.

2 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

I plug them so much bc I got started through them and will always love them. They ship 30mls in squeeze bottles FWiw as well. The vials don't bother me, I use a funnel and can pour or use a pipette. The price is a little cheaper and they also have some flavors and gear BCF doesn't have and vice versa.

BCF is great WL is great. ECF and Gremlin are also great aND have things the others dont as well. WL is a great onestop and I want to try their new nicotine.

I was supposed to visit them on my trip but had some minor emergencies and had to run home instead.

Definitely Graham Cracker/Raisin/Vanilla/Tobacco, according to my memory.

Check out DIY Vapor Supply for non-mainstream things like Seedman Flavors, which was around when BB was made. Seedman Commercial Tobacco was being used in DIY RY4 mixes at that time (it was relatively weak tho, compared to the current tobacco flavorings).

It used vapor renu black devil tobacco which was discontinued.

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

I thought about this scenario last night when another redditor said something about vapor renu as well. My only solution is to spend more time/money lurking at /r/deeper_diy.

It's an NET, the tobacco strand was grown by cocaine smugglers. All the flavor additives have been identified though, it's just a matter of some e doing trial and error percentage variations. I'd also ask for a specific breakdown of that report to make sure you don't get some ...unexpected results.

1 points

by bobbysavageover 8 years agoResident Tobacco Specialist

Can you please elaborate on all three points you made ?

2 points

by DarkJester89over 8 years ago
  1. The tobacco strand used for Boba was cut off by its supplier.

  2. Boba's flavors is different per user. 10 people could try it and get different varieties, due to the NET which is known for changing flavors per steep time. Chocolate, graham cracker, coconut, and a few other basic flavors made it. Apple cider vinegar has been noted as well. And raisin/plum

  3. If a lab is going to do a reverse engineer of the flavors, make sure it'd not going to be a simple breakdown of. Well we found out that it has.. Nicotine.. vegetable glycerin and prop glycol with some unknown food flavors.

Don't want to see a report that's super generic telling us what we already know. Bob's bounty has hundreds of forum posts and threads dedicated to it, NET DIY and non DIY alike. People have been trying to clone it for years.

still on the back burner for now. sorry

havent gotten my oil changed since i drove to FL and back from TX.

Hopefully I can get maintenance done tomorrow

Hopefully I get this job I interviewed for today, Im also looking for an apartment currently.

Cash is tight but this is do-able. I could have done the GCMS last month but have been neglecting like all my other hobbies. So instead of buying that/not having cash for flavorants, I bought software.

I also need to buy nicotine and VG soon. oh and pay some toll road fines grrrr

Hopefully I can at least get the GCMS done in 30-60days unless someone just wants to pay TFA for me. That was never the intent though.

No worries. I'm currently in a similar situation but I'll gladly throw in some cash if needed sometime soon.
