Not a horrible mess up but figured I would share my goof with other new mixers so they don't make the same mistake.
I recently posted a thread about how I'm leaving on a RV road trip for a year so I'm batching a bunch of juice to use on the road so I don't have to take my base chems with me. I got the free 15ml 100mg/ml test nic from nudenic which I have used up (also, I love them for that!). I then got a 120ml bottle of 24mg/ml nic from another supplier (wizard labs).
I figured to get the 24mg/ml solution as I wanted to mix up all of that 120ml before I left so again, I wouldn't have to take any nic with me. I did not realize that getting such a low concentrate in a PG solution would cause issues with how I ratio vg/pg in my juice. Since I have to use so much nic/pg to reach a target of 3mg nic in my juice I can only run 60/40 vg/pg in most of my favorite flavors.
Again, not a huge deal as I'm finding the higher pg, more throat hit, less I chain vape, more juice I save. I just wanted to remind new mixers (like myself) to take account for your end goal ratios, pg/vg content of your nic, pg/vg ratio you want at the end of your juice and the pg/vg content of your flavors. Something I didn't think all the way through at first!
Much love and thanks again for this wonderful sub!
I did the same thing when I started mixing, by ordering a pre-mixed 12mg 70/30 base from ECX. 12mg was my target nic at the time (which has since dropped down to 4.5, making that bottle of nic base useable again with a little calculation) and when I ordered it I wasn't thinking about how diluting that base with flavoring would give me something more like 60/40 10mg juice. I quickly ditched it for 100mg nic in PG though, once I was confident in my ability to not cause my own untimely death my nicotine.
I made a similar mistake recently. I use 100mg in VG + VG + PG.
Well when it came time to add the VG, I realized as I'm pouring, that I don't have enough to make a full litre with the VG I've got left. WHOOPS! So my options were to have 6mg juice or add a bunch of PG or wait for another bottle of VG to arrive at my doorstep.
I spilt the difference. 3mg 60PG/40VG and a 6mg max VG base. Both of them have way more throat hit than my usual 70/30 3mg so I wind up vaping a LOT less.
In the future you could cap your mix, then run to the store for VG... expensive but possibly worth your time.
There's a lot of things I could have done but didn't. Like make sure I had enough in the first place, or like you said, stop right there and go get what you need.
But I'm in the middle of moving and I had to finish packing up all my mixing stuff so I said 'fuck it, I'll deal.'
You guys are lucky. Stupid law has just come in over here (UK) . Can't buy nicotine in strengths over 18mg, or in bigger bottles than 10ml.
The TPD rules are awful.
Damn that's ruff. Whats the legality of you having nic shipped to you? Saying if you had a friend in another country that just mailed it to you?
I'm not sure. The strongest we could previously buy is 72mg which was more than enough.
Put briefly
Can't buy in bottles bigger than 10ml (if they contain nic iirc)
No stronger than 20mg
Child proof bottles
Warnings & leaflets with bottles
No tanks bigger than 2ml
Must be leak proof
That's right I think.
The biggest impact on small companies was the testing of each flavour @ each strength.
For example if you have 5 different flavours, at 3/6/9/12/15mg, that's 5 tests per strength per flavour. 25 tests at 2-3k each. If the recipe is changed, all the tests need to be done again.
I could be wrong on some details, but this is what was outlined last year, and it was met with pretty low resistance as it was kept reasonably quiet.
I'm still buying tanks from China, only problem is, if they do get opened in customs I doubt they'll be let through.
All in all, we've been fucked good and proper.
Smokers have been too as well. 10 packs are no longer available.
I'm sure if you Google the TPD act you'll get more accurate details.
Yep. Made that same mistake only I was on 12mg of nic at the time. Now I'm on 6mg and I order 48 nic. I'm still afraid to go higher.
Yea using the 100 nic i had i felt like i was handling a nuclear power core haha. 48 will be perfect for me in the future.
made the compleat oposite mistake. usually dilut my 100 mg nic into 24 mg batches every 4 or 5 months. didnt have pg to dilute mixed using 100 mg wound up with mixes having 80 to 90 % vg.. learned what happends when switching from high pg juice to high vg juice and the otherway around... til i dedicated a tank to older batches and one to the high vg batches. learning how to wick the for higher vg in cold weather wasn't fun either.
about as much fun as realizing its a dumb idea to just fill up tanks (was using clearos back then) and toss them in a backpack when going to the beach and leaving them to sit in the backpack in the sun.
Always use a calculator?
What OP is saying is their nicotine is all PG, and just the nicotine solution alone is 40% of the juice they make. A calculator can't change that.
I believe the moral is to buy a higher concentration (100mg/ml) or VG suspended nicotine.
Yes i always do. Im just saying i didn't think about the fact that lower concentrate nic in a pg solution would use up a lot of space in my mixes as far as how much overall pg is in my juice.
Novice mistake and one i hope to help others not make.
