I walnut make a terrible pun title for this Flavor of the Week
submitted over 8 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Thanks to the everyone who joined in last week's Flavor of The Week discussion about Pudding flavors.

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

This week's flavor is: Walnut

Past FOTW posts can be found here

Prepare yourselves, next week's FOTW will be: Cinnamon

The week after that will be: Oddball Berries (Huckleberry, Boysenberry, Lingonberry, Saskatoon, Acai, Goji)

Ok since you're clearly all dying for the punchline here you go..

"Who's there?"

"Walnut"

"Walnut who?"

"Walnut strong, don't lean on it."

This seems like a fairly obscure request for an FOTW. There are a few walnut flavors out there but I rarely see them used. I'll eventually pick up FA Walnut to try /u/rageisalotofwork 's Pistachio Green Salad recipe, though. And if it's a very authentic walnut flavor, TFA Banana Bread seems like an obvious pairing. Maybe add some to Nutty Monkey or 3 Banana Nuts?

INW Little Space Drop has a bit of a raw walnut taste to it. Pretty earthy, and it's something I'm going to work with more I think. So far, the only thing I've used it in is this.

Fallen Cold and Dead

AP- .5%

INW Captain Jack for Pipe- 3%

SC Cohiba- 2.5%

FA Latakia- 1%

INW Little Space Drop- .5%

I really like it, but it is a bit overwhelming as an ADV. more something to keep in a spare atty to sip every now and then. I've read good things about using LSD in cigarette mixes, which I'm going to try out, but from what I've found for cigarette recipes, I don't think people really remember what cigarettes taste like.

Yep, I've read good things about using LSD, too.

Has anyone tried Medicine Flower Walnut? I read somewhere that it's the most accurate walnut flavor.

I've been wanting to play with Walnut ever since I tried the Povitica that Strawberry Hill makes. The English Walnut flavor is just divine and I would love to make a juice out of it. What is a good Walnut flavoring though? I'm thinking I would need to find a good bread base, cinnamon, maybe a little butter, and lastly a good walnut.

I'm thinking FA walnut will be what most brands use

Might be due for a tobbaco fotw?

Yessir, definitely, the last one is over a year old now.

The number of and nature of comments in this thread so far makes me think that "walnut" might have been too narrow. But "nuts" would have been too broad because of all the peanut and peanut butter talk that would open it up for. Maybe "tree nuts" would have been better if we hadn't just done pecan a few weeks ago.

The point is, to you think "tobacco" would be too wide, or no? If so, is there a good way to break it down into different types of tobacco? Should we consult with one of our resident tobacco experts on the subject?

I think some of the experts could say more about this because I don't use tobacco flavors, so far at least.

I think it would be good for people like me who have no idea where to start with tobacco flavors. I could easily search around for plenty of info but I'm lazy and too wrapped up in fruits/bakeries.

I think a fotw focusing on leafy/more realistic tobbacos would be a good resource for the interested and/or the lazy. (I know last time it was tobacco blends but that's super broad.)

Well, let's call some of them and see if they'll help with some guidance in this. If they can break tobaccos into four groups, FOTW could have tobacco month.

A maple coffee and walnut cake recipe might work. Or apple and walnut oatmeal cookies. Can't really think of many that aren't savoury.

Walnut and maple syrup are an obvious combination

I'm a little late to this thread but you're right. I've just started trying a maple walnut ice cream recipe and here is the rough draft:

1.5% FA Walnut
1.5% FA Maple Syrup
4% TFA Vanilla Bean Ice Cream

Pretty basic but it seems good so far. Has only steeped a couple of days so will be interested to see what it's like in a week or so.

Has anyone tried INW Walnut? I'm not getting something interesting or really useful from it in any percentage and I wanted to know how it compares to FA Walnut or other vendors' takes.
