Setup: Haze RDA, Dual Coil Kanthal Round Wire Build, .40 @35-40 watts. Cotton Wicks.
Testing: OS-DIY Blue Raspberry Slush @ 10% 70/30. Shake and Vape.
Flavor Description: Smell out of the bottle is promising with an accurate "blue" raspberry smell. After some research-yes; there is a difference between raspberry and blue raspberry. There is some misinformation out there whereby a lot of folks are saying that the blue coloring in candies/beverages was just to distinguish raspberry from all the other red flavors such as strawberry, watermelon and cherry. While there is some truth to that...the flavor of the blue raspberry is based on the white bark raspberry which actually does exist in nature. While I have never had one there is a noticeable difference between red raspberry and blue raspberry beyond the color. In my bending tests the most reliable way I have been able to coax this flavor is mixing raspberry and peach. But I digress back to the review of this concentrate by OSDIY.
First off, the main profile on a vape definitely satisfies the blue raspberry requirement. It is pretty spot on to the flavor of the blue slush drinks and the blue raspberry candies we are accustomed to. It doesn't have quite the vibrancy and tang you get from a stand alone fruit like INW raspberry however, in this case, I think that is a good thing in terms of accuracy to a slush type flavor. I suspect they are using something like EM(Ethyl Maltol) to soften and mute the flavor to give it the proper texture of a slush drink. I think it is a good move and fits the profile well. It also gives the impression of a finished/more refined juice and has a definite soft mouth feel that I would associate with a slush drink. On the inhale I get a nice sweet fruity impression with the vivid impression of the blue raspberry on the exhale. More smooth than snappy but does not lack definition. What really impressed me straight away is the clean finish. I detect absolutely no weird aftertaste whatsoever. I would say further that the exhale flavor dissipates to nothing in short order which I think is a good thing in that it makes you want to vape it again.
I have found very few concentrates I could vape stand alone (for pleasure anyway) and this one does clear the bar in that regard. It is a pretty linear flavor profile but it is tasty and accurate in my view. I get some slight citrus notes in the background that help give it a little snap but there is nothing offensive or distracting going on whatsoever. It has a very clean finished commercial quality to it. I get nearly zero throat hit as well.
Off Notes None.
Uses/Pairings: I think it is most useful as base for a blue raspberry beverage as intended but certainly could play in the candy realm very well or even ice creams due to its soft texture. It compromises some vibrancy to achieve the soft slush profile they accurately market it as.
Final Notes: If you have been wanting to hit a blue slush profile and haven't tried this concentrate I can recommend it with high confidence. It is clear to me that they got this flavor right and in my opinion it lives up to the hype overall. Typically, I am let down in the world of premixed concentrates but this one impresses me for what it is. Is it a spot on slushee? Maybe not, but it is what I would call a 90 percent there base. I did a mix with a little more sweetener, some cooling agent and a little strawberry ripe and was not let down. At the risk of gushing-I like it a lot. My one and only true gripe...I hate the bottles they are using....I immediately transferred to a regular dropper style. The contents of the bottle however, are on point if your chasing this profile.
I agree on the damn bottle! It's a pain. I bought this to try in a mix called Frost(I think) and it's just an OK vape, nothing I'd make a big bottle of. I haven't gotten around to trying it by itself yet because I was excited about trying the recipe I found but after reading your review I'll make some later!
I am really wanting a good blue raspberry flavor but I haven't been able to hit what I want yet. Never thought of mixing peach in to get there though so thanks for that tip!
I have a feeling you're talking about my recipe.
Appreciate the comments. I am super guilty of racing ahead and making recipes out of my newest concentrates but I am really trying to slow the process down and sit with things to try to understand them better. There could be an entire thread on the intricacies of blue raspberry. I see guys throwing some blueberry with raspberry and calling it blue raspberry?!? I have been playing with subbing out the peach with something like FA Mango and it kind of does nice things.
Great review, Thank you!
Anyone know how this compares to Liquid Barns Blue Raspberry ?
I have not tried it but I do know that LB has some gems...it could be worth investigating.
I really like Liquid Barns version and it gets stellar reviews. Was just curious.
Thanks
