A new resource for DIY information.
submitted over 8 years ago by SynysterjesterxPâtissier

I've been quite apprehensive about posting this here. But, criticism breeds excellence! Fellow Mixer's, I'm proud to launch Eat sleep mix repeat This site is still a work in progress, but we're already making strides in the community. It was originally a companion for my YouTube channel, and it blossomed into something really special.

We have the usual things you'd expect, an ever growing flavor book, Video content, basic helpful content for any skill level and a resource for the community we've been building on Facebook.

But the main focus is recipe reviews, something that you don't see around much. I don't know how many concentrates/recipes I tried and absolutely hated. And my aim is to minimize that as much as possible, though, as we're constantly reminded, tastes are subjective.

The best part. It's free. Comprehensive flavor notes, and ALL content is 100% free. I do have a Patreon page. But I never force that down anyone's throat, nor is there any "exclusive only" content, other than one week early access to flavor notes and inside looks at original recipes while they are in development. After that, it's still 100% free! I launched the Patreon to hopefully at some point break even on the cost of hosting the website.

Our aim is to stay humble while bringing new and familiar content to everyone!

A big critique of the other major communities is that they've lost touch with the actual regular person. And that's our number one goal, community first.

Example, tonight I hosted a live mixing session on the Facebook page. That turned into helping a couple members hash out a few recipes they where having an issue with! It's so humbling having others ask for help, and I'm proud of the fine community we've build!

Anyway, for those shy of the book of faces, the website also has a fully functional forum.

Thank you for taking the time to read this, I hope you enjoy the content we've been working on.

I'll be happy to answer any questions you may have. And I look forward to your criticism as well.

I love you all and take very good care of yourselves!

Update. 4-21

I've addressed several conserns voiced here and the interface should be more streamlined now.

I appreciate all of the positivitiy from you all and I'm excited for the future.

Thank you all again for the help!

thank you for building this website.

some criticism:

  • please remove blinking from header. IMO - it's annoying

  • make header menu font colour more readable

  • add ability to open pages in new tabs for carousels

  • first items in both carousels for a some reason not clicable (inside #display).

  • following this link i see no content https://www.esmrdiyvapes.com/mr-smiths-house-of-aroma

  • not sure what should be here, but hide this content instead of displaying error message if something can't be loaded (if something should be loaded remotely - you can set display: none to tag and make it visible if request will not fail)

<span id="comp-j12mdaiounavailableMessageOverlaytext" class="s9unavailableMessageOverlaytext" data-reactid=".0.$SITE_ROOT.$desktop_siteRoot.$SITE_FOOTER.1.1.$comp-j12mdaio.0.0.2.0">We're sorry, this content cannot be displayed. Please try again later.</span>

upd:

it was my adblocker. adblocker blocked iframe. use this to hide error message:

    #SITE_FOOTERinlineContent > div > div { display: none }

I addressed some of the issues you brought up here. And the missing links where because I'm an idiot. The flashing geocities banner is gone and I'll be enlarging the menu text tonight.

That is the only ad on the page. Something small and at the bottom.

thank you. and don't call yourself an idiot. even experienced developers make mistakes.

i'm not designer and can be wrong, but i think it will be better to use not white colour for header background (and for dropdowns). some options: #c0c0c0, #faebd7, #ffdead, #ffe4c4

as font family try to use:

"open sans", sans-serif;

easier to read. compared to "futura-lt-w01-light"

Where is it Futura? It should all be open sans? I'll investigate this when I get home. I'll look through your suggestions for header color and match up one according!

Thank you for your kind words and help.

Ok I'll bite. What's the point? All the actual recipes link off-site to elr or alltheflavors. The youtube reviews are off-site and not even embedded in the page. The recipe "reviews" that are actually on the site are all one-line "knocked it out of the park" or "nailed the profile." The little content there is is difficult to navigate on the front page or utterly buried in the "flavor book". The weird pulsing menu at the top screams geocities and the leader image is stretched and doesn't fit right.

Sorry man, A for effort but I don't see a lot of value there. Yet?

If I were you I'd have a syndication style blog on the main page with a chronological list of all the most recent updates. Have actual content for display right there on the page for people to read.

Thank you for your feedback. As I said. It's in its infancy. And some things are place holders right now.

Everything is working in becoming embedded and fully functional. Thank you for your time.

It already looks better with the blog style posts on the main page!

Thanks for offering something up to help out the community.

To put it lightly, it certainly needs some work.

Its not amazing, but this is the site I've built myself.

Here are some criticisms I can come up with;

>Lose the "over screen" on the recipes pages. Just make a list with links. That extra click is noticeable.

>Like others have mentioned, lose the flashy banner. It screams early internet.

>The banner is pretty rough. Very low res. Here's something I whipped up. Certainly not a finished product, but much cleaner. Feel free to use it or ask for alterations, I'd love to help. Personally, I think banners are a little outdated.

>Your review page has grey boxes around each post. That's a no go.

>On the review page, try to stick to one justification and layout. Either put the author on the left of the image, or the right. Personally, I'd lose the author image, and just have it be title, image, author text.

>Same goes for the flavor book page.

>Toss the facebook button at the bottom of the screen, it throws off the flow of things.

>On the reviews themselves, it looks like your text is the same color as your background. I thought things were just loading slowly.

>I'm not so sure on the page hit counter. Personally, I'd lose it.

Like I said, if you need help with anything, I'd be glad to lend a hand!

I appreciate your time! I'm definitely not a coder. I'm using wix.

I'm currently working on fixing any issues this wonderful community found, and I thank every one of you.

You're absolutely right about the banner. It looks much better on mobile, but I need to make it higher resolution for desktop.

Understood about the author images. And in hindsight it's a bit much. And I'll reorganize it tonight!

The Facebook button that sits under the main banner?

I don't know why the text looks like that. On my end it look right. I'll investigate further and correct this.

Yes. It's a hit counter. I'm not sure how to hide it. I'll remove it if you thinks it's a detractor.

Update. The text is because I'm an idiot and updated all h3 and p1 texts to white across the board. I was inserting text over an image and needed to make it white. It's corrected now.

I appreciate the heads up..

Oh nice! Interested in collaborating on a sideproject?

The mission of said product is to accumulate sourced information on the health and safety of different flavor concentrates.

The goal for the users is getting very quick well presented information on the flavor concentrates that they're interested in. Including flavor percentages, flavor tastes, flavor profiles, volatiles. All user editable, all freely available, no lazy ads.

Very simple, no frills, no opinion, just the raw hard information. And most importantly NOT FOR PROFIT.

What's your rate? PM me.

The concept of what you're trying to do is good, but I think you need to brush up on some graphics & web design courses. I hope this doesn't sound harsh, I do like the idea, but you need to invest some more time into the design portion. Lynda is a great place to get started and learn design tips such as color scheme, layout, etc.

Some honest critiques.

  • The layout mixed with the flashing header seems almost chaotic and makes me feel lost.
  • There are no links for the first two images on the home page.
  • I'm unsure of what the counter is, visitor count maybe? Regardless it adds onto the chaotic element of not knowing what is going on.
  • The layouts for the flavor menu's don't blend with the site. It's a white background with small gray squares, with more white backgrounds inside the images with little to no text.
  • I clicked thru and wound up on a blank page several times, not even sure where I was 90% of the time honestly.

I understand the feeling of wanting to go ahead and launch a website ASAP, but it might be best to go into a re-design phase for a few months and develop a fairly large amount of content/functionality first. I think once you spend some time on getting the basics of lay out and design down you'll be able to make great progress though. Best of luck to you friend!

Thanks you for your input. I'll address these issues as soon as I'm able.

The flashing header is a bit much.

I appreciate your time!

While JQWebco seems to have good intentions, as for me personally, i could care less about how good or not good your skills are at web design and all the other stuff .

If the sites navigable and has reviews that can help people decide if a recipe is worth buying the flavors for and taking the time to make then thats more than good enough for me.

These days i skip over shitloads of recipes that probably contain a few gems but since there is virtually no feedback i end up skipping them.

I would love to be able to stop wasting so much time doing that so lets get this going . You have plenty of time to brush up on the graphics if you feel the need down the road .

Bottom line , i have zero patience and demand this to come to fruition immediately , i don't want to hurt anybody but will kill if necessary.

Thank you kind Sir

Thank you very very much for being able to recognize what is lacking and filling the need of what so many people have been looking for , which is a site focusing on recipe reviews.

No matter how much you search for recipe reviews the reality is that the net does not offer a website that has an abundance of them.

There is either no reviews , one or two reviews and on occasion some recipes that have between 10 & 20 but those are exceptionally rare.

Wishing you much success on this .

Although it sounds great, eventually you'll be over-whelmed with schedules, time and equipment. If it grows, which I hope it does, it'll need more time, more people, more money. Then patreon becomes a membership, yadayadayada. I love these new sites popping up all over, can't get enough. But going with the premise the best part is it's free, I feel is time Limiting

by Synysterjesterxover 8 years agoPâtissier

Mark my words here. It'll never be a subscription service.

I'm already 100% paying out of pocket for everything.

I'm hopeful for growth as well, and that's why I have contributing writers. If Patreon where to take off. Profits would be 100% sank back into the site.

I know I'm a random Internet stranger, but it'll never be a subscription service. I'll close it down before I do that.

I love the feedback and please, call me out if I ever break my promise.
