Inspired by Gentleman's Custard...

Hazel's Custard

Creamy hazelnut and sweet caramel custard

Manufacturer | Flavour | Percentage ---------|----------|---------- TPA | RY4 Double | 4.5% FW | Hazelnut | 3% CAP | Vanilla Custard | 4.5% FW | Caramel Candy | 1% TPA | Acetyl Pirazine | 0.5%

Steep Time: best with age

Profile: sweet, creamy, nutty, buttery, and rich.

The Breakdown:

RY4 Double (TPA):

The body and backbone of this profile for which the other ingredients layer onto. It begins the profile by offering up its sweet caramel, vanilla, nutty and slightly spicy/burnt/dark/earthy notes.

Hazelnut (FW):

Creamy, sweet and buttery roasted hazelnuts. It tastes just like a hazelnut butter spread and compliments RY4 Double so well and really shapes the profile.

Vanilla Custard (CAP):

It's buttery, rich, creamy, tasty and everyone's favourite custard for a reason. It is a very obvious choice for the custard note and also works really well with RY4 Double.

Caramel Candy (FW):

I think Flavor West really hit the nail on the head with this one. It tastes like those caramel candy's wrapped in cellophane. Its creamy, smooth, sweet, authentic and combines with RY4 Double to push forward the profiles caramel note.

Acetyl Pirazine (TPA):

Wherever RY4 Double is, Acetyl Pirazine should be close by. It increases the nutty, buttery and roasted notes, which enhances and completes the profile.

Notes:

If your a fan of Gentleman's Custard I think you'll be very happy with this one. I have been continuously developing different recipes with RY4-VC-AP for awhile, as it's one of my favourite profiles. This recipe hits all the right notes and has taken its place in my daily rotation for good reason. Also, for a little more depth, try Red Oak (FA) 0.75% for a woody, earthy, smokey aged-cask note.

Hope you enjoy.

Well, guess I'm whipping up a batch of this today as well. Total count is currently at 11...I'm gonna be in the kitchen a while, I guess! Good thing I've got leftovers from last night. Thanks!

Man, that sounds delicious. I really have something going with hazelnuts, some may say it makes me nuts ;).

Jokes aside, did you try TFA hazelnut (or dx) in this? Because I have this slight green/sour taste with fw or fa hazelnut. TFA's is just so well rounded nutty, it's more like a creamy pie hazelnut cream on it's own. Paired with caramel and some vanilla already my ADV for months. I will try your recipe for sure, with tfa and fw hazelnut, just wanted to know your opinion on this :).

haha ya me too. I've been on a sweet nutella binge in the evening: Hazelnut FW + Dark Chocolate MF + Vanilla Custard CAP + Sweetener

I'm sure you can sub hazelnut out and it'll taste great. The base of the recipe is great on its own: RY4D + VC + AP, the rest is used to enhance and entice the profile. The creaminess, sweetness and nuttiness of the hazelnut and caramel make this recipe very addicting.

I love Gentleman's Custard but I don't love FLV Butterscotch and haven't found the right sub.

That being said I'd love to try this but don't have FW Caramel Candy. Would MF or FA Caramel sub well for this recipe?

Possibly MF at 0.25-0.5% but you'll have to let me know how it turns out

Thanks for responding. With a percentage even! I'll let you know how it turns out.

A lot of caramel gets real gross above .5%, but at that percentage it works great to enhance a lot of flavours.

I tried FLV Butterscotch and while it tastes awesome, it does gunk your coils quite a bit. I found FW Butterscotch Ripple a good sub. Not as flavorful, but it works really good in the recipe. You will get more focus on the RY4 and Custard if you are using FW Butterscotch Ripple. (Same percentage as FLV).

I love Butterscotch Ripple if there's something like a vanilla or cream to settle it down a bit. My main complaint with most Butterscotch is that sweet acrid off piss type note. So I tend to stay away from recipes or sub a caramel. It's almost worse than some honey concentrates to me.

They usually need a good steep to get rid of the butyric acid taste, which can be very off putting. I think you're absolutely right by needing to pair it with a vanilla/cream.

I have replaced all of my bodily fluids with gentleman's custard so this looks very promising. Thanks for coming out with new recipes for us RY4 lovers as it doesn't seem like ry4s and similar flavors get much love.

hahahaha! Let me know in a few weeks how you like it :)

I really enjoy using my base of: RY4D + VC + AP and adding different layers onto it. Coconut, chocolate, espresso, tiramisu, dark for pipe are a bunch of complimenting flavourings I've tried.

But, my favourite so far is this Hazelnut FW + Caramel Candy FW blend. Caramel Candy can even be increased (1-3%) for a sweeter version (without adding sweetener and changing the profile)

Are gentlemans/hazels custards for max VG?

3 points

by ohm-societyover 8 years ago

I personality mix them both at 70% and throw them in a MTL setup. I'm sure you could mix them max VG, since they are both very flavourful and rich but I haven't myself. I would suspect that you may need an extended steep but this stuff is best kept in the cellar for a month+ anyways.

nice good to know. I generally vape 50/50 - 70/30

I'm a huge fan of gentlemans custard and so are a few of my friends. I'll definitely mix this up. Thanks! Also gentlemans custard is really good if you sub butterscotch FLV with FW butterscotch ripple for the same % try it out.

I'm glad you and your friends are enjoying it! I have subbed it out for Butterscotch Ripple and do very much enjoy it; probably more than the original. Also, I've tried a 2:1 ratio of Butterscotch Ripple to Butterscotch FLV and is nice too. I like that about the recipe and it's easier to sub some flavourings out as long as the base: RY4D + VC + AP stays the same.

Let me know how you like this version :)

Question! Does FW Creamy Hazelnut work as a sub?

1 points

by ohm-societyover 8 years ago

I have not used it before because ever since finding FW Hazelnut, I have not felt the need to branch out and discover new hazelnuts. It does its job and does it well. That being said, I have read up on it, and it is less smooth and sweet than hazelnut and is a little more potent.

I would recommend using it at 2% but increase FW Caramel Candy to 2%. It'll help increase the sweetness/smoothness that would otherwise be missing.

I independently have been working on a remarkably similar recipe recently, but with tfa banana cream and graham cracker clear. It turned out so well I was actually going to post it, but now it just doesn't seem as original (really, it's more of a tribecca clone with some banana notes). I even used Red Oak at 0.5%, and it's quickly becoming my secret weapon to add complexity to tobaccos and baked flavours.

I'm not sure if I could take the hazelnut at 3% though. I found the throat hit at above 2% to be a little too harsh even though I love the flavour.

I normally don't go above 2% (FW Hazelnut) in a mix for the same reason but the maltol in RY4D helps control that and also an extended steep time. This recipe has a delicious base of: RY4D + VC + AP, which is amazing on its own and allows for layering of the right flavourings

I guess it's just a difference in taste. I have had 100ml of RY4D @ 10%, FW Hazelnut @ 2% and TFA Vanilla custard @ 3%. Tastes alright (though cap v1 VC would've definitely worked better), but the throat hit is brutal to me.

Have you tried adding a bit of MTS-Wizard or Smooth?

Just got some caramel candy and acetyl pyrazine in just so I could mix this one up. It's going to be very difficult to wait the month to taste it. It smells amazing. Made 100mls without nic, mostly to try it without it. Every time I've mixed with CAP vanilla custard it tasted peppery and I wanted to see if it's the custard or the nic sitting too long and making things peppery. Anyone else get a peppery feel from CAP vanilla custard?
