The Flavor You Thought You Would Never Use, But Ended Up Using A Lot?
submitted over 8 years ago by nakedz

The title is my question - I'm thinking about starting out, but I have the feeling that just getting the flavors that appeal to me will leave me lacking. When you started out what flavors, that you never considered using, became surprisingly important and useful?

Edit: Wow, thanks for the all the suggestions !

INW Cactus. I use it in anything fruity and it always seems to improve it. So good.

I couldn't stand this flavor, even at 0.5%. After mixing up Grack Juice, I'm about to order a bigger bottle

Pre Grack I bought it in 10ml bottles... Now I order 30ml bottles of it

TFA Vanilla Swirl. I came for the vanilla, but I stayed for the swirl.

I wish this flavor worked as well for me as it seems to for others. I don't hate it, but I cannot taste it in anything. I've tried at high percentages, low percentages, standalone, and with other vanillas- but nothing.

I don't use it for the vanilla flavor, I use it because it adds good creamy mouthfeel. You are not wrong about its flavor being subtle.

by jkermanover 8 years ago

huh i have the opposite problem. I find it overwhelming even in very small amounts!

I agree with u/cooperCollins; I use it to add silky smoothness.

Right... you can throw that shit in just about anything too. Amazing how many mixes\profile is fits into.

INW Cactus, INW Lemon and INW Lime.

I love citrus vapes. Especially lemon and lime. Outside of bakeries lemon and lime require juiciness. Enter cactus.

You can say goodbye to their lemon though... They had to reformulate it. It's my favorite lemon concentrate by far, hope the new version is in the same vein.

Vanilla bean ice cream tfa

Heard so many mixed reviews on it saying it tasted peppery or off.

Bought 10 ml tester. Had to immediately buy a 120ml bottle and that is half gone after 2 months. It works in everything. I also have 120ml standalone ready at all times.

Tiramisu FA

Damn this is spectacular in small doses. Adds the perfect coffee note to mixes. Never anticipated it being this good

by guitargamelover 8 years ago

VBIC is super divisive that way. Either you taste pepper, or it's an incredibly authentic vanilla bean ice cream flavour. Glad you're in the boat that gets to enjoy it.

1 points

by RinVapesover 8 years ago

I taste both... Lol. It would be an amazing flavor if I didn't get pepper from it... It's sad :(

FW Scooby Drink I bought a 100ml when it was on sale and it's a really good standalone at 10% when I'm lazy. It's a fruity mix with a slight pleasant coconut undertone.

Mix it with some creams too make a milky coconutty non alcoholic drink.

Rich Cinnamon. I had never vaped cinnamon before because I don't care for eating it much. Took the plunge just so I could make RuntDastardly's Dutchie. Holy shit, was my mind blown or what. Most of my best recipes have Rich Cinnamon in them now. It's magical. Since then, I've tried pretty much every other cinnamon, and none of them compare in the slightest. Especially anything CAP with cinnamon. Ralph.

aww, you got to make dutchie? Lucky! I will never be able to experience that recipe because...inw waffle.

2 points

by MrBurgundy314over 8 years ago

Aww, I'm sorry! I have had a very long love affair with Dutchie. To this day it's the best thing I've ever vaped. I don't mean to rub it in; it's more to sing Runt's praises. It truly was a masterpiece. Who knows though. Maybe one of these days they'll drop a kickass v2. Or someone else like RF could drop something even better! It's a shame that it was so damn irreplaceable. Of course it couldn't have been a cream or strawberry flavor to get yanked. Psh. Ah well, we can still cook stroopwaffles!

Can you describe the cinnamon? Is it like cinnamon oil/candy/from the spice rack? Is it sharp or earthy, high notes, basey, etc?

3 points

by VaporAlchemistover 8 years agoOne of "The Damned"

The hype is real. This is the best cinnamon flavoring i have tried. Best way I can describe it is, take CDS by Capella, now dial the danish down a lot, make the cinnamon more fresh, now give a little bite with a good hint of spice. Finally, make it 100x more concentrated.

2 points

by MrBurgundy314over 8 years ago

It's like a spice rack cinnamon. A rich, bakery spice with subtle hints of nutmeg and something else that's delicious. It's wildly authentic. You can easily make this the main profile of a recipe, it can be an accent, or it can fall in between. A tenth of a percent will drastically change its place in the recipe. It can be a little abrasive at first; it's super concentrated. After a couple days it finds its place and does its wondrous job. It isn't harsh at all. Nice and smooth. It smells warm. Like.. A warm kitchen at Christmas. It's a very full flavor. Isn't watery, vague, or subtle in any way, shape, or form, but you can manipulate it if you use a light touch. If you search for "Rich Cinnamon" you'll find a couple flavor reviews that are more comprehensive than I could ever be.

If I quit vaping right now I would still buy this shit so I could sniff it.

1 points

by kindgroundover 8 years agoDiketones, Schmiketones

It's a sweetish, woody, straight up cinnamon. No candy, no bakery. Very strong. Like 1 drop per 10ml strong. I use 2-3 drops in a cup of coffee with cream and you can definitely taste it.

2 points

by HashSlingingSlashurover 8 years ago

I think 1 drop per 30ml is enough, 1 per 60ml still very noticeable

Tfa huckleberry FA apricot

1 points

by Penqu1nover 8 years ago

Please tell me more about how you use the TFA huckleberry. I've tried this flavor in a few different mixes and haven't really found a good place for it. I've been using it between 0.5%-1% for berry blends and generally at 1% for cream mixes. At those levels it's still a pretty palate pounding flavor to me. Somewhat overwhelming and slightly soapy aftertaste to me.

4 points

by EdibleMalfunctionover 8 years agoThat Sugar Cookie Guy

Use it at 0.3%.

1 points

by sensfan5555over 8 years ago

There's lots of recipes out there. Kopel has a number of recipes with it, and Id10t's "longing" is a great huckleberry ice cream.

Acetyl Pyrazine, I thought it will collect dust at the back of my collection. I have been using it every time I mix. Once I understood what it does in a recipe, I have been religiously using it's special properties to make pure magic happen in my recipes.

Care to elaborate?

1 points

by VaporAlchemistover 8 years agoOne of "The Damned"

Acetyl Pyrazine (the great texturizer) can be used in a 100 ways, but mainly it acts to give texture to certain flavors, and help separate them from creams and other flavorings in a mix. Some say it's grainy or taste like corn chips. For me, I love how at low concentrations it prevents some flavorings from becoming syrupy and muddled and gives them more character.. Try AP+Nuts, AP+Cereal, AP+Chocolate, AP+Cookie, AP+Milk (Granola), and ofcourse AP + Tobaccos. AP is a big topic that I might tackle in a video one day.

Thanks for that. I got it for gentleman's custard and I've been thinking about how I might use it otherwise.

1 points

by PalefaceVaperover 8 years ago

That's probably my most hated flavor I have... I can taste it in anything, even at 0.25%. To me for some reason it gives juice the taste of bad oxidized nicotine.

I bought it for cereal vapes. Quickly learned I hated it.... which sucks cause it's description and purpose was exactly what I was looking for...... my taste buds just severely disagreed

Cap apricot is juicy pulpy deliciousness.

2 points

by guitargamelover 8 years ago

TFA graham cracker clear, mostly because it's authentic and just mixes well. It took me a long time before I bought it, and now I'm kicking myself for not using it before.

On the more subtle side, TFA red oak. I saw someone on here recommend it to add some complexity to a cheesecake recipe, and I can't believe how quickly it's become a staple "can't quite tell what it is" flavour.

by HocusKrokusover 8 years agoFrugivore

INW Eucalyptus w/Mint. I bought it on a whim because I like oddities, but figured it would be a novelty thing. Now I have to keep a 30ml standalone made up at all times.

1 points

by jd52995over 8 years ago

I made some bourbon, honey wood tobacco, vanilla custard, and Earl grey tea cus my buddy said it would be good. Boy was he right. I just always made sure to keep the Earl grey under a percent. He called it Dapper Dan. Still my favorite flavor but, my girlfriend hates the smell of it.

2 points

by squiredover 8 years agoMixologist

Yup, teas and florals like lavender and rose smell like mildew second-hand. My brother is super into them and it's pretty bad.

1 points

by jd52995over 8 years ago

Yeah exactly. But, it tastes like amazeballs creamy, sweet tobacco with some tea. I don't make it often but, when I do I make 120mls haha.

recipe?

by jd52995over 8 years ago

If I remember right it was 4% vanilla custard 2.5% bourbon and honey wood tobacco and I think I found .9% of Earl grey to be best maybe start with .75 and see if it's enough or not.

CAP spearmint. I got it because the wife loves mint, I've never seen it in a recipe either, but I created my own recipe called "voodoo juice" which is a fruit combo with a touch of spearmint. its amazing and my friends are pestering me to make a batch for them.

CAP Cinnamon Danish Swirl and TFA Vanilla Bean ice Cream.

I had originally bought FW VBIC, a 4oz and I think it sucks...So it took me forever to buy the TFA, which is way better.

1 points

by Tiptup300over 8 years ago

Hows the TFA differ from the FW.

I've only had CAP which tastes like thick air. Then I got FW and it's very nice and sweet....still seems muddy though.

1 points

by McTouchButtover 8 years ago

It's been awhile since I tasted it, FW's to me was peppery and tasted like chemicals.

However the TFA is what I expected it to taste like, creamy vanilla ice cream.

But again some people find the TFA to be peppery.

Creme brulee by INW. I bought it for a butterscotch recipe. It makes it in almost all my bakery recipes.

Tfa rice crunchies. I added it to a Cinnabon flavor I was tinkering with, and it's found a place in pretty much every dessert flavor u make. Adds a fantastic malted/nutty flavor. Usually one or two percent

I hate it (still), but found if I reduce it to 0.5% in a given recipe it still does what it's supposed to do without overpowering. Now I ran out and can't bring myself to buy more because I still hate it. Wish there was a good substitute!

1 points

by nanjingpeterover 8 years ago

I love the dx version at about 2 % with harsh flavours such as tea.

1 points

by Tiptup300over 8 years ago

Totally agree. I use it about .75-1.5 at this point for thickening things up in a oily way. 2+ makes things cheesy.

I do wish we had a good substitute though.
