Can you guess the currant Flavor of the week?
submitted over 8 years ago by ID10-TWinner of the 2nd DIYorDIE World Mixing Championship

Thanks to the everyone who joined in last week's Flavor of The Week discussion about Blueberry and Bilberry flavors. Some nice looking recipes in that one!

As always, the purpose of this thread is to gather the community to explore a flavor and its many uses. And it's also to have FUN!

Post recipes containing this week's Flavor of the Week, as the star or in a supporting role, with or without development notes. Talk about other people's recipes that use it. Compare and contrast different manufacturers' versions of the FOTW. Ask for help using that flavor in general or to achieve something specific, offer advice, brainstorm ideas, consider substitutions, suggest pairings... really anything at all as long as it's on topic.

This week's flavor is: Blackcurrant

Past FOTW posts can be found here

Prepare yourselves, next week's FOTW will be: Apricot

The week after that will be: Papaya

The week after that will be: Pistachio

The week after that will be: Puddings

The week after that will be: Walnut

The week after that will be: Cinnamon

The week after that will be: Oddball Berries (Huckleberry, Boysenberry, Lingonberry, Saskatoon, Acai, Goji)

The week after that will be: Shisha.... INW Shisha everything. How to use them, when to use them, best recipes with shisha flavors.

The week after that will be: Dulce De Leche

The week after that will be: Grape

The week after that will be: Oats/Grains

The week after that will be: Frostings/Icings

The week after that will be: Waffles

The week after that will be: Bubblegum

The week after that will be: Melon

The week after that will be: Pandoro & Panetonne

The week after that will be: Pumpkin

The week after that will be: ??? You tell me. Please take this opportunity to suggest one that interests you (or send me a PM to do that). Otherwise I'm going have to resort to picking one of these from /u/tranceinate: pasta, paprika, parfait, pastry, pesto, pickle, potato, praline, pretzel, pulled pork, pizza, pancake, pie, pie crust, pie filling, peppers, plantain. And from /u/Turbonatorcharged: Butter Chicken, French baguette.

Recently picked up INW Blackcurrant on the advice of /u/philosaphucker as he's never given me a bum steer, and even more recently bought FA Blackcurrant to mix up this bad boy, but have not done anything with either blackcurrant yet. What else should I do with these flavors?

I've been trying to get INW Blackcurrant to work for months now with no success what so ever. Having read dozens of reviews/recipes I was excited to get my hands on this flavour to mix a nice menthol and blackcurrant juice. I've tried it at 2% 4% 6% 8% and 10% but I personally just can't seem to pull the flavour out of this concentrate. I thought I had a bad bottle so I purchased another 3 bottles all from different suppliers and my results were replicated. I've seen posts stating this is the best Blackcurrant concentrate on the market which is frustrating when I can't taste a damn thing from it. I've added other fruits to try and get this to pop after 5 weeks steeping and still nothing. I hope you have better results than I had with this one because it's got me puzzled.

Yikes! Maybe you're some kind of blackcurrant non-taster similar to all the strawberry non-tasters out there?

I occasionally buy a premium a Blackcurrant/Menthol so I can taste Blackcurrant but honestly this concentrate had completely defeated me lol. I've literally read every single piece of literature and notes made on this concentrate and I still can't get it work. I know it's the same concentrate because it smells like jet fuel. Have you ever had a concentrate that has great reviews and no matter what you just can't seem to get to work.

I think I have this problem with blueberry, never seems to come through in my vapes, but I trieed adding some to water, and drinking it, tasted like fruitopia then

May I humbly suggest you restart your flavor testing, but start at .5% and work your way up instead. I've rarely gone above 3% for any Inawera concentrate.

Just a thought.

I think you will be able to taste MB Sharp Blackcurrant, stuff is pretty damn strong!

INW Blackcurrant and MB Blackcurrant are quite similar and both far better representations of the berry than FA or TFA's version. I've mostly been pairing them with blueberry or raspberry. My current ADV (ever changing) is:

  • 3% TFA Raspberry Sweet
  • 0.5% INW Raspberry
  • 1% INW Blackcurrant
  • 0.75% CAP Apricot

Far from perfected but pretty balanced. The apricot is the variable here, you can swap it for vanillin, lemon, blueberry, mint, whatever you enjoy.

Thanks! I had planned to pick up CAP Apricot on my next order anyway (for the Monthly Clone Challenge) and already have both raspberries.

It's one of CAP's better fruits for sure and very easy to work with. Not necessary for the recipe though, you can even omit it.

I enjoy FA Black Currant as an accent to all manner of fruit mixes. It provides a tart element that makes things stand out or provides some background to top-heavy flavors.

0.5% does the trick with this earth-bending mix. I really hope that INW didn't fuck up plum with their new version.

I also use it very differently for the same application in a drunken romp with cactus and pineapple here.

I haven't played with INW Black Currant a whole lot, but I have liked what I have seen thus far. This one has a creamier texture to it and opens up all kinds of possibilities for interesting pairings. If you have the stones (and the flavors), I dare you to mix up this lovely number.

I like it as a sort of fruit emulsifier, like dragonfruit but with out the tropical note. Goes great with FA fuji at .5%.

I'm going to mix those first two very soon now that I have all the ingredients for them, part of my plan to try one Philosaphuker original a week until there are none left to experience.

As for Major Errors... INW Exotic Roots wasn't available when/where I was filling up my cart but INW Exotic Fruits rhymed with it so I grabbed that instead.

Come to find out it has barely any mention on the sub, zero recipes whatsoever on ATF. I don't even have a damn clue what it's supposed to be. No SFT yet. Smells like... raspberry banana candy? It's probably terrible and will turn out to be a lesson that "rhymes with" is not the smartest way to shop for flavors.

Dude. Ahh shit. I snagged that from gremlin when it was on sale. That is what I get for flavor shopping out of the bargain bin, I suppose.

I frequent the "What Can I Make With These Flavors" threads, as you are aware. I humbly submit that "rhymes with" is an as good if not better method for picking out flavors than whatever some of those people are doing.

Iv'e done some testing with this stuff in my earlier diy days.. when i didn't know this place existed. This flavor is incredibly strong, i can't say too much because iv'e probably tested it at like 5% when it should have been 1%, i think it could do some pretty complex stuff to some mixes. Pretty perfumery to me it tasted like fruit flowers.

I have TFA and FA black currant.

i find FA black currant tends to taste more like a fruit pastille candy around 5%. meringue would probably bump up the sugar coating.

TFA black currant is much more... dirty and floral at 5%.

FA's version mixes very well with other fruits and i've used it to boost strawberries, apples, pears, and kiwi with .5%. since it's so sweet/candyish I've had a lot of luck using it as a sweetener in the .5-1% range.

No recipe, haven't nailed anything worth sharing. solo FA's version is exactly what i wanted - the fruit pastille candy.

I wonder if TFA Black Currant is one of those flavors like TFA Blackberry and TFA Huckleberry that needs to be used real low to not be a floral yuck fest or if that's just the way it tastes, and a lower % is just a weaker dirty floral thing.

I'll preface by saying the only blackcurrant flavor I've messed with was FA, but FA Blackcurrant and I have an interesting relationship.

FA Blackcurrant and I first met with my very first flavoring order from BCF (which I would say is where my mixing career really began). It was love at fist smell, I knew I wouldn't need another blackcurrant and was ready to settle down. Shortly thereafter I had my first failure of a recipe that I thought was delicious at the time with my Exotic Custard. This was my first ADV and I couldn't believe how good it was.

A month or two in, and it wasn't quite tasting as good and I started doing some research. I had forgotten about my flavor partner and we took a break due to my craving for exploring other flavorings.

Fast Forward a couple of months and I happen across /u/RuntDastardly's Glaistig/Osiris to re-invigorate my passion for blackcurrant by becoming another ADV. I had forgotten how much I loved thee, blackcurrant, and I'm sorry for abandoning you.

As I began dabbling with more florals, tobaccos, and oddities my lovely blackcurrant began falling to the background again, to be forgotten, until just recently I created Aura: Forest which has been my ADV for a little over 2 months now and have been reunited once again with my love!

No matter what happens in life, blackcurrant is always there for you and I love blackcurrant for that.

I will say it makes for great pairings in just about any fruit mix, adds a nice berry sweetness to flavor profiles, and is all around a good and tasty flavor.

One that I've been meaning to try is /u/Darklyspectr's Darkly Currant Lemonade, that shit looks bomb and I think lemonade is a fantastic pairing for blackcurrant.

I love you blackcurrant!

That's quite the billet-doux to Blackcurrant, Cheebs. I'm going to go spend my lunch break mixing up something with it right now because you've done this.

I love FA Black Currant. I struggle to taste strawberry so it is an excellent sub or additive. Great as a single flavor at around 4%, or mix it with a little TFA Acai or strawberry ripe, or any other berry for that matter. Can't speak to how authentic it is since I've never had a real black currant, but it is an excellent "red" fruit flavor. I need to order INW version and give it a try.

Have you tried FA Forest Fruit?

3 points

by horizonismover 8 years ago"I Bet I Could Clone That"

FA Forest Fruit works wonders as a backup for FA Blackcurrant. One of the first mixes I ever came up with when starting out in DIY involved a mix of the two.

I ordered them both, based on reviews on here and elsewhere, as a half-hearted attempt at cloning what was one of my favourite summer vapes, before I started DIY.

(Utopia by Rapture - "A mixed selection of red fruits with a touch of anise topped off with the perfect amount of chill to create an all day vape that stands out from the crowd.")

I nailed the profile on my second attempt. Couldn't believe how easy it was. Sadly, the same cannot be said for a single other clone attempt I've made since :/

Utopia (clone)

Ingredient|% :---|---: Anise (FA)|0.25 Blackcurrant (FA)|2 Cactus (INAWERA)|0.5 Forest Mix (Forest Fruit) (FA)|1 Koolada 10% (TPA)|0.25 Mild Winter (Peppermint) (FA)|0.5 Pear (FA)|0.5

Flavor total: 5%

Looks nice! I've not even opened by bottle of FA Blackcurrant yet but just based on the descriptions here it sounds like something that would go well with Forest Fruit.

FW Black Currant tastes like wax candy. It is hard to cover up the waxiness and their concentrate basically feels like chewing the entire wax soda bottle candy.

FA Blackcurrant on the other hand, AMAZING. As /u/Philosaphucker stated, this works well as an accent to most fruit flavors.

I have a very pleasant tobacco recipe here that utilizes FA Blackcurrant at a small percentage to accent a small % of FA Fuji. Don't let the simplicity of this recipe fool you though. It has depth while remaining well balanced.

You make that sound so good I might buy 7 Leaves, even though I'm not really that into tobaccos and haven't found a recipe with Desert Ship that I like.

Thanks for the warning about FW Black Wax Currant Candy.

It really is awful... I could even send you my bottle if you want to experience the wax!

do you get the wax taste even at low percentages? Sounds like it might be useful as an additive when you are trying to recreate something that has a little waxiness.
